Welcome Home!
I hope that everyone had a beautiful summer vacation, and that everyone is ready for the new Church Year! As you will see inside, we have a big HOMECOMING day planned to welcome everyone back to their parish home after their summer wandering. As we fall back into our regular routines, this is definitely a time to re-establish and celebrate the most joyful and liberating part of our routine as Christians – Sunday worship. But homecoming means more than that – it’s a time to plant seeds of Faith that we will nurture throughout the upcoming year through our ministries.
Long before the invention of Labor Day and the school calendar, the end of summer was seen as a new beginning because it was a time for harvesting, plowing and planting. That’s why this is a perfect time for us to celebrate a new year of our ministries – because that’s what ministries are all about. They should definitely plant seeds of faith, but they also need to “till our soil” - challenge us and prepare us to receive those seeds. They also reap a harvest from faith that has begun to bear fruit, allowing us to serve both the parish community and the greater Santa Barbara community. Our ministries will all be represented at Homecoming to tell you about their goals and plans for the year, and how you can get involved.
This event is the undertaking of the Stewardship committee, because they are the ones that are in charge of allowing opportunities for everyone to offer their talents back to God, and allow others to benefit from those talents. We do all of this for one very important reason: to encourage others to come into closer communion with Christ and with his body, the Church.
This year, the Parish Council has set as its theme “Together becoming One in Christ.” We hope that everyone will find a way to get more closely involved with the life of the Church so that we can achieve that goal. If you have an idea for another ministry that we need, please let me and the Stewardship Committee know!
May the upcoming Church Year be filled God’s grace, and may all of the daily turmoil that we face in this life be transformed into Peace by His presence. Here’s to a beautiful year of worship, ministries, and oneness!
With love in Christ ~~~``Fr. Haralambos

Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church The mission of Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church is to safeguard the 2,000 year old Traditions handed down by Christ and His disciples, by encouraging members to participate actively in the Sacramental life of the Church, and by furthering
our knowledge of the Faith through education. In order to realize our role as stewards of God’s vineyard and to grow spiritually as individuals and as a Parish, we will share our Faith with those who seek the knowledge of God, welcome and
embrace all who join us in worship and fellowship, and reach out to those in need. Fulfilling our mission will draw us closer to God and His Kingdom, and allow us to experience the love of God (Agape) in our Parish and community.

Parish Council Message Dear Saint Barbarans,
We had an amazing re-boot last weekend to our tradition of sharing time and learning as well as breaking bread with our friends nearby at B’nai B’rith, at our 2018 Bagels and Baclava celebration last weekend! How wonderful it was to restart this lovely tradition and how interesting and fun and especially how delicious it was!! First we learned many interesting things about the difference in the wedding traditions between the Jewish and Greek Orthodox faiths. Then we adjourned to a huge banquet table full of amazing food, which ran the whole length of the wall in the Orthodox Center!! It was quite fun and interesting to meet and talk with the many attendees from the temple. And they all also seemed to be having a great time too!
I’m already excited about going to next year’s sequel—hope to see you all there!!
Love,
Marina

Dancing!
We had a fantastic turnout for our re-creation of the Bagels and Baklava event from both St. Barbara and Congregation B'nai B'rith - what a beautiful afternoon! We enjoyed a great day of sharing our cultures, faiths, food and dances. God bless Helen McGillivray, Vivi Katsiouleris, Pam Alexander, Minos Athanassiades, Bill Tragos and Ernest Kolendrianos for all of the work that they put into making this event happen. Thank you to everyone that prepared food for the day - it was all amazing. It looks like this will be a regular event once again!

Hello All Goyans !
You’re invited as guests of the Goya Ministry on Saturday September 22, at 6:00 at the Islands Burger Restaurant at La Cumbre Plaza. We can also pick a date that works out for us to take our day trip to Santa Cruz Island. The trip will include an easy hike from Pelicans Harbor to Prisoners Harbor. This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a most scenic hike with epic views that will be long remembered. Paddle boarding and kayaking can also be enjoyed for those not wanting to take the hike. Bring your phones as there will many photo opportunities to share. As this trip was cancelled last year due to foul weather, the Goyans that graduated last year are also welcome. Hopefully Father Gary and the Goya Ministry from St. Demetrius in Camarillo will also be able to join us. Please RSVP to Bill Pertsulakes (805.331.9393) by Thursday September 20th. See you soon. GOYA NEWS
V.I.P. SENIORS
I hope you enjoyed the summer holiday and are anxious to return and meet with our fellow members of the VIP Ministry. Anyone of 55 years is invited to join our group. This year we are trying to change our meeting time so more working Parishioners can be part of our Ministry. We will be meeting on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 10:00 AM for a breakfast meeting. Ordinarily we will be meeting in the Redding Education Center located on our church campus. This first meeting, however, we will not be able to meet there as the facility had already reserved for another event. After this month I’ve reserved the Center for our use on subsequent Saturday mornings. So our September meeting will have to be held at a different location for this time only. We will meet on September 15th, Saturday, at Moby Dicks Restaurant located on Stearns Wharf for breakfast, at 10:00. Parking is provided right in front of the restaurant. Please make every effort to attend and invite your friends, too. Please RSVP to Bill Pertsulakes, 805.331.9393, by September 19th. For those not able to drive, transportation is available, don’t be bashful, just let me know if you need a ride. Hopefully we’ll all be able to get together and this new time works out for more of our Parishioners.
Thank you,
Bill Pertsulakes Acting VIP President
Hello all VIPs!
The Directories are here!
You may remember that the photo directory company (LifeTouch), offered a free photo and copy of the directory for everyone who sat for a photo. If you and/or your family members posed for a photo or submitted one for inclusion in Saint Barbara’s new Directory, stop by the Orthodox Center following Sunday morning services and pick up your copy. Want to order one at a nominal fee? We'll be more than happy to help you do so.
NOTES FROM THE LOFT
On September 9, Homecoming Sunday, our Saint Barbara Choir will be returning to the Loft singing once again for Liturgy. After a busy and hopefully restful Summer, we are excited to begin participating in the Sunday Liturgy again.
If you have thought about joining, but have been shy to try, we welcome you to come up and sing along. We will be having an early practice on Sept. 9 in the Orthodox Center at 9:15 a.m. before 10 a.m. Liturgy, which would be a perfect time to join us. Participating in the Liturgy is a great blessing for Choir Singers. We praise and pray and thank the Lord in beautiful Hymns, and we invite you to come share the experience.
THE SAINT BARBARA SCHOLARSHIP FUND INVITES YOUR PARTICIPATION IN ITS
2018 “ENHANCEMENT DRIVE”
In early July, our Parish family received an appeal to raise funds to replace the $8000 ($1000 from Philoptochos) that was awarded to four highly motivated and talented students from our Church to assist in their pursuit of higher education.
The goal was to raise $3,000 to cover the expenses of the Festival Raffle Booth ($2,400 trip to Greece, $400 printing, $200 mailing) which is the major annual contributor to the Scholarship Fund. $100 was requested/suggested per donation but any amount is appreciated.
Thus far, 17 individuals/families have contributed $100 or more each totaling $1,800 and we are grateful for their prompt response and generosity for this wonderful ministry that has assisted 108 of our young adults over the past 19 years. In the belief that most parishioners merely overlooked the mailing request in the midst of busy summer vacations and the number of daily mailings which we all receive, the Enhancement Scholarship Drive will continue until the ultimate goal is realized. This will guarantee a good distribution in 2019 to the Scholarship applicants.
Please make your check donation to the St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church Scholarship Fund. All the Donors will be acknowledged when our goal is reached, hopefully in the near future.
Thank you in advance for “Enhancing” our Scholarship Fund.

Please join in on our Homecoming Festivities on Sunday, September 9, immediately following
Liturgy. Remember Liturgy starts at 10:00 AM with Orthros at 9:00 AM.
The Stewardship Committee wishes to thank our Parishioners for filling out and returning a pledge card to Laura at the church office. All Stewardship cards and pledges are confidential.
By returning your signed card you are committing to be part of our Parish.
By committing to be part of God’s House of Worship and hopefully being involved in one our many ministries you will make it possible for St. Barbara to meet our challenges and fulfill our legacy for our children to follow

STEWARDSHIP Time, Talents and Treasure
QUESTION: What portion of my time, talents and treasure should I give?
ANSWER: Giving of our time, talents and treasure mainly involves a change of attitude about giving. It is important to think in terms of giving in gratitude to God, of considering how blessed you are, of using your gifts and talents for the good of others. Once you have this change of attitude, you will be able to more readily determine, through prayer and thought, the portion of your time, talents and treasure that you will give up. In the area of time and talents, many individuals commit a certain number of hours each week to prayer and charitable activities. Those activities can include working in your parish, with various community agencies, or with an individual in need. In the area of treasure, when you know in your heart that you have been honest with God and yourself, then your gift is the proper size.

• The Greek Festival was slower this year than 2017, yet better than 2016. We are still paying a few more bills, yet I believe the net will be around $50,000.
• We did buy a trailer for future use, so we will net cash at $40,000 plus have the Trailer for future years (purchased
