Graduation Requirements

ALL STUDENTS MUST EARN A TOTAL OF TWENTY-ONE CREDITS THAT INCLUDE:

4 credits of English,

4 credits of math including Algebra 2,

3 credits each of science and social studies,

½ credit of health,

½ credit of physical education, and

1 credit from the areas of Business/Technology, Fine Arts, or Foreign Language

5 elective credits

FRESHMEN REQUIREMENTS

American History 1 credit

Mathematics 1 credit

Science 1 credit

Physical Education/Health depends

Electives to fill up at least 6 classes per semester but no more than 7 classes per semester

Journaling is required. Sign up during the scheduling process.

A student may take and receive credit for as much physical education as he or she desires.

A mod is 25 minutes long.

Every class is two mods long.

Lunch is only one mod: 7,9,11.

Students can take up to 7 classes in one school day.

Honors/Pre-AP coursework require a teacher recommendation and may require the completion of summer reading/assignments that are due on the first day of school.

Summer assignments will be posted online.

Modern Languages

(Chinese, French, German, Spanish) Level I coursework is for students who have not

studied the language OR for students who studied the language in 8th grade but were not recommended/ready for Level II.

Level II coursework is for students that completed Level I in 8th grade and have the recommendation of the teacher.

THINGS TO CONSIDER (CONT.)

Modern Language

(Chinese, French, German, Spanish) Modern Language credit is NOT a graduation requirement

and in some cases may be more appropriate for a student to pursue in 10th-12th grade.

Consider completing 2-3 years of the same modern language if you are college bound.

Modern Language is not required by all colleges for admission.

Fine Arts Complete 1 Fine Art credit if you are college bound.

Fine Art courses include all art, music and technology courses.

Non-traditional Fine Art coursework: Digital Photoshop, Intro to Photo, Theater & Theater II, Woodworking, Visual Communication, Engineering, Drafting & Design & Yearbook

SUMMER SCHOOL

To be announced (typically after Spring Break)

Maximum 1 credit per summer

Will not affect athletic eligibility

COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS –REPLACES POST-SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL OPTION

Attend a mandatory College Credit Plus meeting for students and parents in February the year prior to participation.

Take the ACT by April of the year prior to participation and meet the university’s admission requirements and deadlines.

Sign and return to the Guidance Office the Intent to Participate Form by April 1st of the year prior to participation.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Feb. 12 - high school counselors meet with students at middle school

Feb. 12-Feb. 20- students review registration materials with parents, teachers, counselor

Feb. 21 – selection sheet due to history teachers

Mar. 6– counselors meet with students individually at the middle school to finalize course selections

PROCEDURE CONTINUED:

Early June - final opportunity to make changes in course selections; preliminary schedule printed August - orientation program

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY

Must receive passing quarter grades in a minimum of 5 full credit courses.

Must achieve a 1.0 grade GPA for the previous grading period

Mandatory study sessions for those with a nine-week GPA between 1.0 & 1.99

Athletic eligibility is the responsibility of the athlete and his/her parents. Monitor it carefully.

NCAA ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES

Athletes who wish to participate in sports at a Division I college must complete 16 core courses.

NEXT GENERATION ASSESSMENTS The OGT graduation requirement has been phased out for the class of 2018 and beyond.

Currently, beginning with the class of 2018, students must complete Ohio’s course requirements AND take seven end-of-course exams.

Students must meet ONE of the following three:1. Earn a total of 18 graduation points on seven end-of course exams in the following subject areas:• Algebra I & Geometry• Biology • American History• American Government• English 9 & English 10

Students must earn a minimum of 4 points in English. Students must earn a minimum of 4 points in Mathematics. Students must earn a minimum of 6 points in Science* & Social Studies. Tests are scored on a scale of 1-5.

Students studying Advanced Placement or taking dual enrollment (College Credit Plus) courses in Physical Science, American History or American Government may take assessments aligned to those courses in lieu of end-of-course exams to avoid double testing.

--OR--1. Earn a “remediation free” score on a nationally recognized college admission tests.

--OR--1. Earn an industry-recognized credential or a state license for practice in a vocation and achieve a score that

demonstrates workforce readiness and employability on a job skills assessment.
