❑ Students and parents will understand the basic requirements for high school graduation.

❑ Students and parents will know what academic, athletic, and social opportunities are available at SHS.

➢ All students reading on at least a 12th grade reading level by graduation

➢ All students finish one completer program; preferably two

➢ All students take a math course each year (Senate Bill 740)

➢ All students set short and long term goals for life beyond high school

Reports pupil achievement as follows:

❑ 90-100 indicates that performance exceeds WCPS standards and requirements❑ 80-89 indicates that performance consistently meets and occasionally exceeds

WCPS standards❑ 70-79 indicates that performance meets WCPS standards and requirements❑ 60-69 indicates that performance minimally meets standards and requirements❑ 0-59 indicates failure to meet WCPS standards and requirements

Understanding Grading

When the student passes a class, that student has earned a CREDIT.

You can earn 6 or more credits each year.

If a student fails a required class, the student must repeat that class until the credit is earned.

Students must earn a minimum of:❑ 4 credits for promotion to grade 10❑ 10 credits for promotion to grade 11❑ 16 credits for promotion to grade 12

Understanding Credits

A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is determined by adding the total of Quality Point Values per class divided by the total number of classes attempted.

Quality Points are earned in accordance with grades earned as follows:

60-69 1.0

AP courses on weighted, meaning they are on 5.0 scale.

Student Service Learning

Procedure:

❑ Students earn 15 SSL hours in each class-

6th gr. Science, 7th gr. Social Studies, 8th gr. English, and 10th gr. life skills.

❑ Students must earn 15 hours in independent service.

❑ Independent service can begin at the start of 8th grade.

❑ Design own plan but must have approval before starting.

❑ Contact a partnering agency which is pre-approved.

❑ Student must keep record of their hours.❑ Record card is available at each high school.❑ Record card should be turned in to the school SSL

Coordinator the same calendar year as service is performed.

AVID- Advancement Via Individual Determination● AVID is a program designed for students that want to attend

a 4 year college after high school ● The program helps students be successful by providing

academic skills such as note-taking strategies, study strategies, and test-taking strategies

SALT - Smithsburg Academic Leadership Team● SALT is a leadership program that promotes high academic

achievement and instruction to help students become leaders within the school and community

● Students will also participate in volunteer activities within the community through the Youth United Program (part of the United Way)
