Chris’ Weekly Spot

Welcome back everyone to the ‘new normal’. It’s been a while since I have put pen to paper,

so to speak. I must admit, I have pondered over what to write about. I am sure you have all

been saturated with information on how to stay well, how to stay sane, how to manage

your anxiety and how to stay connected. And let’s not forget the million and one home ex-

ercise routines that are guaranteed to keep you physically fit whilst schooling/working from

home.

Let’s face it, we have all experienced and are still experiencing a high degree of uncertainty

and change. So, hence my decision to write about change. One thing, change is inevitable.

Think of the weather, think of technology, think of moods, think of basically everything!!

Sometimes we know a change will occur, like deciding to look for a job. Sometimes change

comes suddenly and unexpectedly. Maybe it’s not so great, or maybe it turns out to be a

wonderful surprise.

One thing, try not to waste too much time and energy avoiding change. You might get

away with it in the short term but eventually it does catch up with you. Learning to cope

with change is one of those important life skills that can make life so much easier. You are

less likely to feel overwhelmed by life, your relationships are better and your body will feel

healthier.

Here are some tips:

Accept that there will always be change

Try to not get fixated on particular events or people’s actions or attitudes. Realise that

you have no power to change either. Instead focus on what you can control. Ask your-

self, “What can I take responsibility for in this situation?” For example, we didn’t ask

for the COVID-19 virus to disrupt our ‘normal’ but we can take responsibility for our

own health and safety by practising regular hand hygiene and social distancing.

Taking responsibility within any given situation empowers us to look for opportunities for

change that are possible. Do this and you are less likely to feel stuck in difficult and

trying situations.
