Welcome and Thank You! Welcome to the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust’s A Guide to Los Angeles’ Community Gardens, and thank you for your interest in learning about the many wonderful community garden projects and resources that Los Angeles has to offer. This guide serves primarily as a bridge of information, connecting those with an interest in community gardening to the existing gardens within the Los Angeles region. The information contained within this guide was largely obtained from the Common Ground Garden Program of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), the Los Angeles Community Garden Council (LACGC), and the many dedicated community garden representatives. Furthermore, the Office of the Mayor’s “We Serve LA” initiative, which helps utilize volunteerism and community service as a strategy to solve critical local challenges, greatly assisted in the development of this guide. In addition to being an information resource, this guide is intended to be a tool for those interested in creating community gardens in their own neighborhoods. By researching, visiting, volunteering at, and supporting the existing community gardens, we can better understand what works, what doesn’t work, and how we can improve and create successful community garden projects in the future. This guide, and its online map partner, can hopefully assist in that process. Nearly 95 community garden projects are mapped and presented in this guide. Simply stated, that is not enough. Childhood obesity has reached an epidemic level, access to affordable and healthy fruits and vegetables is major challenge in many communities across Los Angeles, and in many parts of the City, both obesity and limited access to fresh food directly correlate with lack of community gardens and parks. Fortunately there are resources, but to best utilize them, we need to work together. Over the next couple years the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust will be working with UCCE’s Common Ground Garden Program, LACGC, the Mayor’s “We Serve LA” initiative, and many community partners to provide a wide range of community garden creation and support tools. In short, I hope that we will soon be working together, creating dozens of new community gardens across our amazing city and region. Thank you again for your interest and support.
