West leads the ♦K. You win the ace and lead a heartat trick two. East plays low. Which heart do you play? Thanks again to Eddie Kantar for the problem.

Solution to Quiz #7♠ K 10 2♥ A Q J 10♦ 10 5 4♣ A 3 2

♠ Q J 5 ♠ 4 3♥ K 9 3 2 ♥ 8 7 6 5 4♦ Q J 6 3 ♦ A 2♣ Q 9 ♣ 10 8 7 4

♠ A 9 8 7 6♥ ---♦ K 9 8 7♣ K J 6 5

This is what Eddie Kantar, who provided the prob-lem, had to say about Quiz #7

Your best chance is to make everything as simplefor yourself as possible. It is unlikely that the openinglead was a singleton. With A J 6 3 2, East would prob-ably have ducked to insure both communications andtwo diamond tricks. So play the king of diamonds. Evenif West does ruff, you still have chances. If you playlow and East is short, however, you are in deep trouble.

Assuming the ♦K holds, play the ♠A and a spadeto the king, followed by the ♥A and ♥Q, discardingtwo diamonds if the ♥Q is not covered.

Now if spades have divided evenly, the contract issafe. West wins the ♥K, but you have two additionalhearts in dummy to park your club losers. You wind uplosing a spade, a diamond and a heart.

Quiz #7 winners: Doug Doub, Nancy Sahlein. Please pick up your prize in the Daily Bulletin office,Algonquin Room, mezzanine level at the Royal YorkHotel.

Hewitt won the spade opening lead with the queen, crossed to the ♥A and led a club to the 9, losing to thequeen as she rectified the count for a squeeze. Itworked! She cashed out her spade and heart winners, and East was in trouble when Hewitt led the good 13th

heart from dummy. East had to hold onto all four dia-monds so was forced to part with the ♣10. Since Hewittwas sure East was protecting diamonds, she was rea-sonably sure the other card in East’s hand was the ♣K.So she sluffed her diamond and won her 12th trick witha small club.

Thoughtful defenseSometimes East-West made 2NT and sometimes

they went down one. At this table Bob Hamman suf-fered a three-trick defeat as a result of thoughtful de-fense on the part of Betty Rossman and Bruce Ferguson.

The opening lead is the ♠3. Do you want to playor defend?

If you play, you win the ♠Q with the king. Youlead a club to the queen and a club back to the king, losing to the ace. West cashes four spades as declarerpitches two hearts out of each hand. East can affordtwo hearts and a diamond. When West plays the ♥K,taken by North’s ace, East is squeezed in the minors.

If you defend, you as West will lead the ♥K beforecashing your spades. That kills the squeeze.

A hoary maneuverBy Barry Rigal

I was able to use a hoary old maneuver on thisSpingold deal.

♠ K Q 7♥ K J 2♦ Q 9 4 3♣ J 7 3

♠ J 9 6 4 3 2 ♠ 10 5♥ 8 4 ♥ A Q 7 6 3♦ K J 7 ♦ 10 8 5♣ 4 2 ♣ A Q 9

♠ A 8♥ 10 9 5♦ A 6 2♣ K 10 8 6 5

Both tables played a partscore. I declared 2NT fromthe North seat and got a heart lead. I played the 10from dummy and then won with the jack, trying togive the impression that I had the doubleton king-jack.I led a club to the 10, and when it held I had to blockthe spades by crossing back to my hand to try clubsagain. East hopped up with the ace, and at the this pointhe could have held me to eight tricks. But he tried the♥A and I would up plus 180.

At the other table, North-South bought the con-tract in 2♣ by South, which looks like a safe spot. Notso! On the defense of three rounds of hearts with a ruffby West and then a spade shift, declarer elected to cashthe top three spades. This was the ending as the thirdspade was led.

♠ K♥ --♦ Q 9 4 3♣ J 7 3

♠ J 9 8 ♠ --♥ -- ♥ 7 6♦ K J 7 ♦ 10 8 5♣ 4 ♣ A Q 9

♠ --♥ --♦ A 6 2♣ K 10 8 6 5

Consider what happens if East pitches a diamond.Declarer’s natural play is to do the same and then leada club to the 10. South then leads ace and another dia-mond, and West leads a third diamond after winning.South has to ruff his own winner and give up two clubsin the ending.

So what is declarer to do?His only choice in the ending it to pitch the ACE

of diamonds! Then he leads a club to the 10 and fol-lows with a low diamond toward the queen. Now hecannot be prevented from reaching dummy to playclubs up and make the contract.

Of course, at the table the defense erred – but in adifferent way. East ruffed the third spade and now itwas easy for South to overruff and play diamonds toforce an entry to dummy and make the contract.

Mother and Dad play, but Tina just caddiesLike so many sons and daughters of bridge play-

ers, Tina Sundelin of Stockholm, Sweden, does notplay bridge – too big a flood of bridge at home. Sheknows hundreds of bridge players because of her par-ents, but the closest she gets to a card table is whenshe’s picking up tickets as a caddy.

We said Tina does not play bridge. Well, she hasplayed twice – in a caddy tournament at an NABC a fewyears ago -- “I came in fourth,” and in a caddy tourna-ment here – “I came in third.”

She thoroughly enjoys playing in the caddy games.“It’s fun. We fight just like real bridge players.” When weasked her if she won, she replied, “What? The fight?”

She and partner Taylor McFall of New Berlin WIbeat one redoubled contract 1000 points. “We didn’t fightthat time – we danced!”

Tina is the daughter of P.O. Sundelin and JillMellstrom of Sweden. P.O. has been playing on the Ameri-can circuit for many years – he won his first North Ameri-can championship, the Blue Ribbon Pairs, in 1984 play-ing with the late Peter Pender. He also has won here inToronto – his team placed first in the NABC Senior SwissTeams. He is a world star – he has finished third in theBermuda Bowl three times – 1977, 1987 and 1991. Hehas represented Sweden internationally 22 times.

Jill also is a Swedish star player, representing hercountry internationally on many occasions. She is not herefor this tournament, but she too is a regular on the Ameri-can championship circuit.

P.O. will be heading back to Sweden after the tourna-ment, but not Tina. She is looking for a residence here inToronto, preferably on campus, because she will be start-ing classes soon at the University of Toronto. She’s ea-gerly looking forward to campus life. Can anyone help?

No trump coup in notrumpBy Roger Lord

West led the ♦10, taken in hand by Popkin, wholed the ♠2 to dummy’s queen. The appearance of East’s♠J brought the proceedings to a halt as Popkin pon-dered his chances of making the contract against a pos-sible 4-1 trump break.

Becoming impatient with the delay, West brieflyexposed her hand and offered to take her “two trumptricks” and concede the remainder. Alan politely turneddown the offer, stating, “I think I can make it, ma’am.”

Declarer came to his hand with the ♣A and playedthe ♠8, which held. Next, he ruffed a club, led a heartto his king and ruffed another club. After cashingdummy’s top hearts, Alan returned to his hand with adiamond, leaving this ending:

♠ K 9♥ ---♦ A♣ ---

♠ A 10 ♠ ---♥ --- ♥ 8♦ --- ♦ 7♣ Q ♣ J

Alan led the ♣K and, when West followed suit, discarded dummy’s ♦A. At trick 12, a diamond playcreated a 12th trick by forcing West to ruff in front ofdummy.Although he was pleased with the outcome atour table, Alan expressed mild regret that 6NT mightbe bid and made in the replay.

“That’s all right,” I assured him. “You can’t makea trump coup in notrump!”

What an exit card!At the key point on this Spingold hand, Bob

Hamman (East) had to find the card with which hecould exit safely. He did so.

when declarer called low from dummy. He switchedto his singleton heart, won by Paul Soloway, who ledback the ♥ Q, covered by the king and ruffed byHamman. How would you defend at this point?

If you didn’t lead the ♠K (or perhaps the lowspade), you’ve lost the game. A diamond lead clearlywill fail. If you lead a club, declarer will let it ride tothe jack, lead the ♦Q and ruff out the king, cash the♣A, ruff a club, cash the ♦J for a club discard, come tohand with a trump and ruff the last club. Then he canlead a red card, ruff it and draw the last trump, makinghis game.

What did Hamman lead? The ♠K, of course.

At one table, North-South bid to 5♦ . Declarer(South) won the opening lead of the ♣10 in hand. Facedwith three possible losers, South made the good playof the ♦7 at trick two to force an entry to dummy.

Alas, West won the ♦K and gave East a club ruff.South still had to lose a spade and went minus 100.

At the other table, North-South reached 6♦ . Onthe ♣10 lead, South had no option but to play the ♦A.When the king fell, the♦8 was an entry to dummy fora spade pitch on the ♥A. Declarer’s only loser was aspade for plus 1370. That was 16 IMPs for the forcesof darkness.

The Facts: 3NT doubled made three, +550 for N/S.The opening lead was a low spade. After South’s 3NT bida dispute arose over the tempo of South’s pass over 2♠;and the Director was called. South said he did not hesi-tate over 2♠ and North said he did not notice any hesita-tion. E/W claimed there had been a hesitation. The Di-rector ruled that a hesitation over 2♠ by South was quitepossible (Law 16A), that pass was a LA for North when2♠ was passed back around to him, and adjusted the scoreto 2♠ making two, +110 for N/S.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling.South denied he had hesitated over 2♠ , stating that hetook only two seconds to pass 2♠: He saw the ♠K anddecided to pass. E/W stated that other hands in the matchhad established South’s normal tempo and his call over2♠ was out of tempo.

The Panel Decision: Three experts were consulted. All three said that they would never reopen with theNorth hand after South passed and that if someone didreopen with a double (after a hesitation by South) thiswas an egregious action. The Panel agreed with thetable Director that South’s hand suggested that he prob-ably passed out of tempo, and the experts found thatthe reopening double by North was unwarranted. Thescore was adjusted for both pairs to 2♠ made two, +110for E/W. The Panel also determined that N/S’s appeallacked substantial merit and assessed an AWMW tothe N/S players.

N/S complained that they were unfa-miliar with the defense (Suction) E/W were playing totheir 1NT opening, which caused confusion as to themeanings of their own calls in the subsequent auction. The Director determined that, as the General Chart wasin use for this event, direct calls other than double and2♣ over the opponents’ notrump were required to haveat least one known suit. Thus, E/W were playing anillegal convention. However, in such cases no “auto-matic” penalty or score adjustment is provided with-out proof of damage from the illegal method. In thiscase it was the Directors’ judgment that once N/Slearned that West had spades they should have beenable to cope with the situation and that they had ulti-mately caused their own damage on the hand. There-fore, the table result was allowed to stand.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling.Only N/S attended the hearing. N/S told the Reviewerthat they were unfamiliar with the opponents’ defen-sive methods over 1NT and that this had confused themas to their own methods. They were playing methodsfor dealing with one-and two-suited overcalls when thesuit(s) were known. They were an experienced 20+-year partnership and South had played for years inSaudi Arabia.

The Panel Decision: Three Flight B players wereconsulted and none felt that “Suction” was the causeof N/S’s problem (specifically, South’s 4♥ bid) as thenature of West’s hand was known before South’s finalcall. All three players believed that if North had thehearts South needed he would have bid them over 2♠ -Pass-Pass. N/S’s contention that playing in a foreigncountry for so long made them unable to cope withnew competitive treatments and that they thereforedeserved protection was not deemed a compelling ar-gument (Law 21: “Until the end of the auctionperiod…a player may, without penalty, change a callwhen it is probable that he made the call as a result ofmisinformation given to him by an opponent…”). E/W were not aware that Suction was not allowed at thislevel of play at this tournament since it was a verypopular and widely used convention on the West Coast, where they play. Based on the above, the Panel allowedthe table result to stand.

Rigal seeks repeat inMixed BAM Teams

After winning a squeaker in last year’s MixedBoard-a-Match Teams, the New York–California squadcaptained by Barry Rigal is hoping for an easier timethis year.

Rigal (Sue Picus, Sylvia Moss, Judi Radin, AlexOrnstein and Jeff Ferro) claimed victory last year by amargin of .61 – 35.65 to 35.05 – over the team captainedby Mel Colchamiro (Janet Colchamiro, Kitty MunsonCooper, Steven Cooper, Betty Bloom and SteveBloom).

On Sunday evening Ryder reached 4♥ on this auc-tion: 1♥ - 1NT - 3♥ - 4♥ . This is a better spot than3NT, especially if the defense finds the spade switchearly against notrump.

Ryder won the spade lead and finessed in hearts.Next he cashed the ♥A and decided to take the ♥9contributed by West at face value, trusting that thetrumps were 4-2. He advanced the ♣K and the defensemade the double error of winning and playing two morerounds of spades. Ryder ruffed, cashed the top dia-monds and ruffed a diamond. The defender with thelong hearts could pitch one club – not enough! Rydercould cash two clubs ending dummy to lead a plaincard and score his ♥K-J via a trump coop for 11 tricksand a great score.

At death’s door last year:now on the bridge circuit

Three times last year, Jue Wang was told to be-gin making funeral plans for her husband, Kuang-Wei Chiang, who was gravely ill with cancer.

On Friday, the Allentown PA couple played in twosessions of the IMP Pairs, after playing in the SpingoldKnockout Teams earlier in the week, and were makingplans for more bridge.

Says Chiang: “I feel good. I feel that I’m cured.”Wang’s primary concern for her husband now is

getting him to gain some weight.Wang is from mainland China, her husband from

Taiwan. They met at a Rye NY regional and were mar-ried five years ago. He is an electrical engineer. She isan investigator for the state of Connecticut.

Last June, their first child, Alex Chiang, was born.A month later, doctors found a neuroblastoma behindChiang’s nose.

He spent three and half months in the hospital, un-derwent five operations and at one point lapsed into acoma. Wang was told on three separate occasions thather husband was not going to make it.

In desperation, she found a man who practicedmedicine in China. He took her to South Mountain nearAllentown to pick some wild ginseng. Back in Allen-town, Wang made tea from the ginseng and gave it toher husband, who was so weak he was on a breathingmachine and being fed by tubes.

Within two days, he was on his way to recoveryand by Jan. 2 of this year was able to return to work.

Wang believes the ginseng saved her husband’s life– “He is getting better and better” – and that it is anideal potion for bridge players because it “keeps youfresh” and allows you to concentrate better.

Since Chiang’s recovery, the two have been backon the bridge trail, traveling to Las Vegas earlier in theyear for the regional and driving from Allentown toToronto for the Summer NABC.

If you have questions about ginseng and its prop-erties, you may contact Wang [email protected]

corded win number six in the women’s knockout, re-named in 1995 to honor the later Margaret Wagar. Wei-Sender won her first in 1971. She has also been sec-ond six times. Seamon-Molson has won the women’sKO four times, Sokolow three times and Levin twice.

Ironically, Chambers and Seamon-Molson weremembers of the winning women’s knockout team atthe last Toronto NABC, in 1992. They defeated Wei-Sender’s team in the final that year.

With the victory, Wei-Sender’s masterpoint totalsurpassed 15,000. She is a Grand Life Master.

Trailing 83-59 at halftime, the Wei-Sender squadblitzed their opponents, 59-6, in the third quarter andpoured it on, 52-13, in the fourth for the easy win.

For Chambers, the win capped a highly successfulday for her family – son Adam Chambers ofSchenectady NY won a newcomer game, and Adam’sfather, Neil Chambers, came in second in the IMP Pairs, playing with Norb Kremer.

Bull 2-2 in quartersas Vulture circles

The Bull went 2-2 in the quarterfinal round ofthe 2001 Spingold as Mavromichalis, the original#32 seed, defeated Coleman with a second-halfstampede. In other matches, Nickell escaped a lateSchwartz charge, Jacobs blew out Sosler, and Mosswon a tight one in the last quarter.

Even worse, the Vulture, predicting the WagarWomen’s Knockout for the second year in a row, endedhis assignment with a crisp 6-0 record.

Change is in the air, and the Bull could be put outto pasture by ACBL officials for prognosticating futil-ity. If the Bull goes 0-2 today, the Vulture picks thefinal of the 2001 Spingold tomorrow.

Into the Final Four of the Toronto Spingold:#2 Nickell against #3 Jacobs. In the featured match

The Bull is pro-NAFTA, and so Nickell pulls outa miracle on the last board as the North Americansescape the Italians. Nickell by 1.

Toronto NABC headingfor table count of 16,000The 2001 Summer NABC in Toronto added an-

other 1393 tables Friday to inch closer to the targetorganizers have been eyeing since the tournamentstarted: 16,000 tables.

Not counting midnight games Friday, the TorontoNABC table count stood at 14,124.5. The NABC needsto average only 938 tables per day Saturday and Sun-day to push past 16,000 tables. The tournament is al-ready assured of a spot on ACBL’s all-time top 10NABC list.

Smith had a big 33-point lead over Mark Gordon atthe half, but they blew all but 1 IMP of that lead in thethird quarter. Then they staged a fourth-quarter come-back to win, 130-115.

Richard Schwartz and Co. also had a big fourthquarter, but it wasn’t big enough to catch Nick Nickell,Richard Freeman, Bob Hamman, Paul Soloway, EricRodwell and Jeff Meckstroth. Nickell held on to win,108-99.

George Jacobs, Ralph Katz and Italians LorenzoLauria, Alfredo Versace, Norberto Bocchi and GiorgioDuboin had no troubled dispatching Gerald Sosler, 223-71.

Schaffer, Frisco TX, and Mike Passell, Plano TX.The winners triumphed in the IMP Pairs on the

occasion of a major change in the scoring method. Forthe first time since the event was inaugurated in 1987,scoring was across the entire field, with potential formassive swings.

Boyd said he likes the change from the datum scor-ing method, in which each score was IMPed againstan average of the other scores after high and low scoreswere discarded.

“The IMP chart,” Boyd said, “ is designed to mag-nify small differences and shrink large ones. Using adatum changes that.”

On the other hand, Robinson said, in the new formof scoring “every time you go minus you lose IMPs –unless the opponents have had an accident.”

Said Boyd: “The IMP Pairs is fun because you canpush the accelerator down a bit.”

Boyd and Robinson have been among the topACBL pairs since they began playing together in 1980.They have won about a dozen North American cham-pionships together, mostly teams. Their previous pairschampionship came in 1985 in what is now the NorthAmerican Open Pairs.

Interestingly, in the final IMP Pairs session, Boydand Robinson had their only bad round against SidneyBrownstein – captain of the team which eliminated theirsquad from the Spingold.

said, “and that’s due to two things – great volunteers andpre-tournament promotion. I can’t say enough about EnidRoitman, my right hand all the way. She’s a totally re-sponsible person. She kept me sane during the toughmoments.

“Barb Clinton did a great job with registration andthe prizes. Ina Demme handled hospitality extremely well, including taking care of the food. Flo Belford was thenovice chairman, and Barbara Seagram was a major helpin this area.”

What’s this about pre-promotion? “Without pre-pro-motion I would have dead in the water. I went to everyNABC for three and a half years and set up a booth. Igave out thousands of Toronto buttons. I told everyonewhat a great city Toronto is. I talked and talked and talked.”

What has it been like this week? “I was going ab-solutely crazy at the start, finding volunteers to load6000 registration bags. But we got lots of help – somefolks from Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Oklahoma pitchedin. But after that there were just a few little fires to putout. I think our Toronto cards have been a hit, and lotsof people have told me how much they like theirmoosicles.”

Brooke Nelles, BillWoodcock, Gary Whiteman, John Lloyd and BrianJohnson came from far behind to topple HowardGianera, Barry Purrington, Vernon Evans, MonteEvans, John Koch and Tony Ames.

Nelles trailed by 44 at the half, but they erasedall 44 IMPs in the third quarter to go into the last 16boards all even. They outscored their foes by 12 inthe final stanza.

“We were all going to play in the pair event onMonday,” said Lloyd. “Then Brian (Johnston) talkedto each of us and suggested that we give this teamevent a try.”

“I thought this was a good idea,” said Johnston,“because on the rare occasions when we play bridge,we usually play teams. We had an interesting prob-lem for our first match – only three of us could bethere because of business commitments. We askedthe director if we could use a sub, and when he saidyes, we used Dale Freeman. That match ended in adead tie, but we were fortunate enough to win thesix-board playoff.”

Johnston is the only one who regublarly plays. “My kids are older so now I can

play.”

‘Old rubber bridgers’win Mini-Spingold II

According to the winners, “a group of old rub-ber bridge players from Toronto” won the 0-1500Mini-Spingold Knockout Teams. One of them re-ally is on the old side – Leo Takefman is 81. Twoothers are in their sixties – Irving Goodman, 67,and Bob Hollow, the playing captain, 65. The team’s“youngsters” were Motaz Farag, Jim Brickman andBill Kertes.

They came from behind (down 11 at the half, down 6 at three-quarters) to defeat Larry Friedman,Jennifer Gianeri, Ala Sobol, Larry Delfs, JerryPoliquin and Mileva Jobin.

“It was a matter of good old rubber bridgeagainst technique,” said Hollow. “We play reallysimple bridge – our only conventions are Staymanand Blackwood, and we play four-card majors.”They play their bridge at the Belleville Bridge Cluband the St. Clair Bridge Club.

What made them decide to try their luck in thisevent? “Bob (Hollow) got us all together,” saidKertes. “He came down to the clubs and talked upthis game. It sounded like fun, so we decided to tryit. Why not?”

Moyse strikes again!By Peter Schwartz

3NT was the usual contract on this deal from theThursday afternoon session, but Jacqui Boisreau and Ifound our way to a Moysian (4-3 fit) spade game. Evenwith both black finesses working, 3NT isn’t all that easy, but 4♠ came home with an overtrick even though the out-standing trumps did not break 3-3.

I won the opening heart lead with the ace, played adiamond to my ace and hooked the ♣Q. Next came the♣A and I ruffed a club with the ♠10, overruffed with thejack. West returned a second diamond to my king, and Icashed the ♥K and ruffed my last heart. I then ruffed thefourth club with the 9, and when West overruffed withthe king, it was all over. West tried another heart but my5 was bigger than East’s spades. I threw a diamond fromdummy and ruffed in my hand, drew trump and claimedthe last trick with the long club. Making 5♠ .

West could have held us to 4♠ by returning a trumpinstead of a heart, but even making four would have beengood for a top.

‘Play the card youintended to play’

Bruce Ferguson dropped by to tell us what hap-pened when he pulled a wrong red 2 in an endplaysituation. He was playing in the Spingold against BobWhite and Michael Kovacich, and the situation aroseearly in the match. This was the situationas he played3NT.

Ferguson planned to lead the ♦2 to discover what cardWest would play. If he played the ♣Q, dummy's jackwould be good. But if played the ♣10, Ferguson knewthat his last three cards had to be the ♣Q and two hearts. That being the case, his three hearts would take the restof the tricks because the outstanding hearts had to be 2-2.

But his mouth dropped open when he realized thathe had led the deuce of hearts instead of the deuce ofdiamonds. Now he was going down in a contract that hehad worked hard to make. But White and Kovacich un-derstood the situation – they knew he had pulled a wrongcard out of his hand. They told him to put it back andplay the card he intended.

Ferguson came by because he wanted the bridge worldto know about his opponents' kind and thoughtful act.
