Meet George Retek, 2002 ACBL President At the 2001 Summer NABC in Toronto, District 1 representative to the ACBL Board of Directors George Retek was elected ACBL president for 2002. In an inter- view conducted Sunday morning, Retek talked about his life, his relationship with bridge and his views on the fu- ture of the game and ACBL. Retek, of Montreal PQ, was first elected to the ACBL Board in 1979, making him the senior member of the policy-setting body. Q: Tell us about George Retek, the person. A: I was born in 1936 in Budapest, Hungary. I survived the Holocaust and participated in the Hungarian uprising against the Soviets in 1956. In 1957 I immi- grated to Montreal, which I consider my hometown. After earning a Bachelor’s of Commerce degree from Sir George Will- iams University and a Chartered Accountant’s degree from McGill University, I have been practicing as a Chartered Accountant for almost 40 years. My wife, Mari, and I have just celebrated our 30 th wedding anniversary, and we have one son, Ralph, who also lives in Montreal. We have two beautiful grandchil- dren; Justin, 7, and Kayleigh, 6. Q: How did you become interested in bridge? A: Originally, it wasn’t exactly for the best of rea- sons. It was 1961, and my roommate, a fellow-Hungar- ian, came to me one day and said, “This is ridiculous! We are immigrants in a new country, but we don’t know any- body and we aren’t involved in any social activities. How are we supposed to meet girls?” Anyway, he had gotten involved at a local bridge club and he needed a partner, so I played with him. But my connection to the game was much deeper than that, although I didn’t know it at the time. My father, who died in 1963, was a bridge player although I never knew it until 10 years after his death. In 1973, I went to South America and I met my father’s brother, who was living in Montevideo, for the first time. While I was there, my uncle revealed to me that he had a great passion, bridge, and that he had won the South American championship. The pick-up squeezeNorm Gordon of Montreal reported the following

deal from the Friday Stratified Open Pairs. Gordon wasplaying with a pickup partner, Hansi Torczyner ofBurlingame CA. Torczyner executed a double squeezeon this layout to bring home her contract.

After South doubled the one-ace response toBlackwood, Torczyner upgraded her diamond honorsand bid the slam.

North led a low diamond which ran to the queenand ace. Declarer cashed her club honors (North pitch-ing a diamond and a heart) and exited with the ©J toSouth’s king. This was the position:

South returned a low heart, won by declarer’s ace.The ©10 was cashed and North, unable to let go of aspade, discarded the ª10. A spade to the jack held, andTorczyner then played dummy’s top spades. South wasnow pinched out of a heart since he couldn’t let go ofhis last diamond. Declarer discarded her diamond. Withboth defenders now reduced to one heart each, declarersimply crossed to the ªK and her last heart was good.Making six.

Note, however, that the defense can do better. Inthe diagramed position, South must return a spade todestroy the timing of the squeeze.

A simple answerBy Barry Rigal

When Ralph Cohen and I sat East-West in the firstsemifinal session of the Blue Ribbon Pairs, this inter-esting deal came up.

We defended the routine 3NT on the natural leadof the ª9. Declarer won my ªQ with the ace and playedthe ̈ A and a club to the king. When the suit split heplayed a diamond to his queen and Ralph’s ace. Now itwas tough (though certainly very possible) for East tocontinue the suit to hold declarer to 10 tricks. Of courseif declarer sets up his heart winner before setting updiamonds, we clear the hearts and again declarer is heldto 10 tricks. So is there no genuine route to 11 tricks?

The answer is simple for declarer: duck trick one, since you know the ªK-Q are on your right – now thetempo is on your side for 11 tricks.

Magical Taxi RideBy George Retek

The first half of the 2001 Bermuda Bowl/VeniceCup was played in the magnificent Stade de France inParis. The organizers, led by WBF President JoseDamiani, had achieved the almost impossible by relo-cating the championships from Bali to Paris on a fewweeks notice. Transportation was arranged between thehost hotel and the playing site prior to and at the end ofthe playing sessions. Between sessions, however, I hadto find my own way back from the stadium to the ho-tel. The charming French hostess suggested I share acab back to the hotel with two players who were justleaving.

The players turned out to be one of the finest pairsin the world, Norwegians Geir Helgemo and TorHelness, who eventually won the silver medal in theBermuda Bowl.

I asked the pair for an interesting hand, and Helnesswas kind enough to mention that in the match againstPoland he did not succeed in a makeable small spadeslam. The key on the deal was to play the followingside suit for one loser:

Dummy 10 9 6 4

Declarer A Q 5 2How would you play it? When Helness asked me, I

foolishly announced that I would play the ace, withouteven asking about the rest of the hand. Well, here it is.Even when you see all 52 cards the answer is far fromobvious:

Contract: 6« by South. Opening lead: ©A.Do you believe in magic? That’s what it takes to make

this contract. Give full credit to Deep Finesse, a softwareprogram that solves double dummy problems, for com-ing up with the solution. This analysis was originally re-ported by Fred Gitelman in the daily bulletins in Paris:

"There is only one solution. Declarer must ruff the©A and immediately ruff a heart in dummy. A trump tohis hand, ruff another heart, cross back in trumps andruff his last heart. Declarer now ruffs a diamond backto his hand, stranding the king of that suit in the dummy!Three more rounds of trumps lead to the following endposition:

« 7ª —© —¨ A Q 5 2

"When declarer plays the last spade, West discards adiamond and declarer throws a club from dummy. Now alow club is played. West wins but has no good return.

How double dummy is this?At the point before declarer overtakes the spade to

return to hand, he can be sure of the distribution inspades and hearts, and on the auction the diamond po-sition is probably clear as well, so the clubs are knownto be 4–1."

Pietro Bernasconi, the master magician, and creatorof the par contest problems, who passed away recently, would have been proud of this deal. One just never knowswhen one can find a masterpiece in a Parisian taxi.

One pip wrongBy Tim Bourke

In our just published book, “The Magic Of Bridge”(which should be available in North America in thenext week or so), David Bird and I devote a chapter tothe rarest of all squeezes, those involving just one suit.

One of the problems in finding such squeezes inreal life is that the conditions are so precise that evenone card in the wrong place can spoil these potentiallybeautiful endings. This was the case on Board 2 fromthe second session of the semifinals of the Edgar KaplanBlue Ribbon Pairs. If the great card shuffler had beenin a more esthetic mood, he would have swapped the¨9 and ̈ 3 to produce:

Dlr: East « K Q 6Vul: N-S ª A J 4

West North East SouthPass 1NT

3¨ 6NT All PassSuppose West led the ª5, won in hand with the

queen. Declarer would count 11 top tricks and hopefor diamonds to provide the 12th. After cashingdummy’s ©A and playing the ©8, covered by the 9 andking, this option would be dashed. Now the only hopewould be that West started with the four top clubs orthe club suit was as above.

After cashing the four spade winners and the ªK,these cards would remain:

« –ª A© –¨ A 8 7

« – « –ª – ª 9© – © J 7¨ K J 10 6 ¨ 9

« –ª 7© –¨ Q 5 3

When the ª7 is played to dummy’s ace, West hasno winning option. If he discards the ¨6, declarer canduck a club to endplay West for a lead away from the¨K. If instead he unblocks the ¨J, declarer leads the¨7 to the 9, queen and king. Then West has to leadfrom the ̈ 10-6 into dummy’s ̈ A-8!

On the actual hand, as South held the ¨9 and Eastthe ̈ 3. The ending was:

« –ª A© –¨ A 8 7

« – « –ª – ª 9© – © J 7¨ K J 10 6 ¨ 3

« –ª 7© –¨ Q 9 3

Now declarer always has two club tricks as long asWest has the ̈K. Just lead the ̈7 from dummy andduck in hand when East followed with the 3. West hadthe unhappy choice of winning and then leading awayfrom ̈ K for declarer’s 12th trick.

The Goodwill calendarsThe bad news is:It has come to my attention that on Goodwill Day

we did not have enough calendars for the players. The good news is:The attendance is way above expectations, and that

is the reason we ran out. We offer our sincere apolo-gies to all those who didn’t receive a calendar.

Morrie found a neat way to extract the maximumpenalty here. Greg Arbour led the ¨A and gave hispartner a club ruff. Morrie, noting that partner led the¨9 for the ruff, returned a spade to the king and ace.Declarer cashed one top heart and then got out with aspade to South’s queen. This was the position:

« –ª –© Q 8 7 3¨ J 7 5 4

Morrie saw that he was endplayed, but he found asolution – he led the ªQ! Declarer won in dummy, butnow there was no way for him to get a diamond ruff.Declarer lost the ̈A, a club ruff, a spade, a trump andthree diamonds for minus 800.

If Morrie had returned a spade, the suit would havebeen set up for declarer while he still had an entry. Ifhe led a diamond, dummy’s ©K would score. Whathappens if Morrie leads his small trump? Declarer winsin hand, draws South’s last trump with his ace and putsSouth in with a spade. South has to put dummy back inbusiness whether he leads a spade or a diamond.

But wait! What if declarer, at trick five, cashes theªK and gets out with a trump to South’s queen? Onceagain South is endplayed since he is down to all spadesand diamonds. Does it do any good if South gets rid ofhis trump queen on the king? No, declarer can lead hislast trump to South’s 8 and allow the 8 to hold to effectthe same endplay.

All well and good, but does South have an answer?Yes! He can play his ª8 on an earlier trick and keep alow heart so that declarer can’t put him in.

Great! But does declarer have an answer to thisploy? It appears so. He can keep the ª2 in his hand sothat he can underplay South’s ª4 and execute the spade-diamond endplay.

But wait! If declarer saves his lowest heart andSouth plays the ª8 earlier, the ª5 can draw South’slast trump and hold the lead, since declarer can followwith the deuce. Now declarer can lead a spade to South’s10 and the endplay is in effect again.

In other words, it is possible for declarer to escapefor only two down – minus 500.

Play began yesterday in the six-session NorthAmerican Swiss Teams, with semifinal matches onMonday and the final matches on Tuesday.

Players will be vying for the Keohane Trophy, which was donated by Ethel Keohane in 1973 inmemory of her husband, William H. Keohane, one ofthe leading New England bridge personalities.

Bill Keohane was elected in 1972 to a one-yearterm as District 25’s first District Director. He died laterthat year, just before he would have attended his firstBoard meeting.

The Keohane Trophy was presented for the OpenIndividual Championship until it was re-designated in1995 by the ACBL Board of Directors for the NorthAmerican Swiss Teams. Keohane was intensely inter-ested in promoting Individual events. New England’srenowned Keohane Individual became the largest eventof its kind in the world because of the promotional workdone by Keohane.

West North East SouthPass Pass 1NT(1)

Dbl 2ª(2) Dbl(3) All Pass(1) 10-13 HCP(2) Alerted; hearts and spades (DONT)(3) Penalty

The Facts: 2ª doubled made four, +670 for North-South. The opening lead was the ªK. The Director wascalled at the end of the play. The North-South conven-tion cards did not have DONT marked on them. North-

South said they had agreed to play it while traveling tothe tournament and North had forgotten the agreement. The Director ruled that even assuming an incorrectexplanation there was no connection between the in-fraction and the result: East’s penalty double seemeduncalled for. Therefore, the result was allowed to stand.

The Appeal: East-West appealed the Director’sruling. South and West did not attend the hearing. TheScreening Director told the Committee that the Direc-tors believed North’s statement that he had misbid andas a result there was no misinformation.

However, even assuming an incorrect explanationthere was no connection between the infraction andthe result. East said that when he was told that North’s2ª bid showed hearts and spades, he no longer had away to get to 2«. He believed there was a reasonablechance his partner held four hearts and his side hadthe balance of the points, so he chose to double. Hebacked up his judgment with the ªK lead.

East was unaware until the Committee’s questioningof North that N/S had system notes showing that theiragreement was as explained. North said that he and hispartner went over DONT as a run-out while traveling to-gether to the NABC. He agreed to play it, though it wastoo late to list it on their laminated convention cards.

North produced typewritten system notes for theCommittee. North said he forgot the agreement to playDONT. He said he was just lucky his partner had heartsrather than spades because he believed he would havebeen required to pass a correction to 2« even if doubled.North had not previously made a DONT run-out error.

The Committee Decision: North’s explanation thathe misbid was reasonably credible, but became indisput-able when he produced system notes to support it. At thatpoint, it was clear there could be no adjustment sincemisbidding is not an infraction and the explanation ofNorth’s bid as DONT (showing hearts and spades) was acorrect statement of the partnership agreement.

The Committee rejected the idea of a proceduralpenaltysince North-South obeyed the laws of the game;

North simply misbid. The Committee then considered themerit of the appeal. Based on the knowledge that East-West were known to have possessed when they broughtthe appeal, the Committee concluded: (1) East-West didnot know of the existence of system notes, and (2) theydid know that +140 for North-South was achieved at theother table. Since they did not know of the system notes,it was reasonable for them to think that the presumptionof misinformation might weigh more heavily than North’sexplanation of his agreement.

Even assuming misinformation, it was East’s bridgejudgment that he needed to be “active”, and it was hisself-described “eccentric” penalty that broke the chainof causality between any imputed infraction and a pos-sible adjustment. Thus, East should not have appealedthe Director’s ruling.

Further, East could have asked to withdraw theappeal once he became aware of the system notes butdid not. Thus, E/W were each issued an Award With-out Merit Point.

The Facts: 2« went down one, +50 for North-South. The opening lead was the ª5. The Director wascalled at the end of the auction. North stated that Westhad fingered the bid cards before passing over 2¨.The Director ruled that East’s double was canceledand the contract changed to 2¨ made three, +110 forN/S.

The Appeal: East-West appealed the Director’s rul-ing. Only East-West attended the hearing. (North-Southdeclined to appear as they had a very poor game.) Weststated that he merely held the bid cards for about 2 sec-onds while he silently reviewed the bidding and thenpassed. When asked by the table Director why he agreedthat he fingered the bid cards, he said he did not hearNorth’s accusation but he did hold the bid cards briefly. He added that North was very soft-spoken.

The Panel Decision: The table Director was askedabout West’s actions. She said that North had not dem-onstrated what she claimed West did with the bid cardsat the time of the ruling. North chose not to appeareven though the hearing was held close to where N/Shad played and started immediately after the session. The table Director believed it was possible that Westhad not understood what misconduct he was agreeingto at the table. Since N/S were not present to supporttheir contentions, the Panel found insufficient evidenceof any irregularity to warrant a score adjustment. Thetable result of 2« down one, +50 for North-South, wasrestored.

(1) Break in tempoThe Facts: 4© doubled made four, +510 for N/S.

The opening lead was the «Q. The Director was calledafter the 4© bid. North’s hesitation before bidding 3©was agreed but South stated that it was not prolonged. The Director ruled that South had shown his values withhis previous calls and that pass was a logical alternative. The contract was changed to 3« down one, +100 forNorth-South (Laws 16A2, 12C2).

The Appeal: North-South appealed the Director’sruling and were the only players to attend the hearing.South claimed that his earlier bids made it clear thathe intended to continue and that North’s slow 3© biddid not affect his intentions. Furthermore, North wouldhave bid 4© if South had passed so North-South weregoing to act over 3« in any case. North-South con-ceded that North had hesitated 15-25 seconds beforehis 3© bid.

The Committee Decision: The Committee be-lieved that unauthorized information was present:North’s 3© was slow and he was clearly choosingamong alternatives. The only possibility was a stron-ger action over South’s cuebid. The fact that Southhad already shown his values did not prevent him fromtaking further action consistent with his hand and theprevious auction. North had shown extra offense anda sixth diamond by bidding 2© freely, and competingto 4© with the South hand was consistent with the auc-tion without any unauthorized information present. Inaddition, the Committee agreed with North’s statementthat even if South was constrained to pass, North wouldhave bid 4©. The table result of 4© doubled made four,+510 for N/S was restored.

The Facts: 3© doubled went down two, +500 forN/S. The opening lead was the ª7. The Director wascalled at the end of the play and ruled that there hadbeen no violation of Law 73C or 16A. The table resultwas allowed to stand.

The Appeal: East-West appealed the Director’sruling and were the only players to attend the hearing.East-West described their methods. West said that fromhis perspective it was likely that East had a balanced15-17 HCP and that was why he chose his final call.

The Committee Decision: The Committee ac-knowledged the hesitation and the fact that it madeaction with the North cards more attractive. The issuewas therefore whether there was a logical alternativeto pass for North. Considering the level of the eventand North’s ability, double was still not, in theCommittee’s opinion, anything like a sure thing. Switchthe ̈ Q and ̈ K and 3© would have been laydown. Infact, even as the cards lay the contract was very closeto making. On that basis the Committee decided to dis-allow the double and to consider the appropriate scoreadjustment for each side. Scores ranging from +100 to+200 were considered for North-South and from -100to -500 for East-West. It was decided that the prob-ability associated with North passing 3© and Southreopening with 3« rather than double met the appro-priate criteria for both sides. The contract was changedto 3« made three, +140 for North-South.

Last years Reisinger:a classic squeakerLast year’s Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams

was a classic squeaker with less than a full boardseparating the top three teams. The team captainedby George Jacobs eked out the victory.

Jacobs and his team -- Ralph Katz and Italianaces Alfredo Versace, Lorenzo Lauria, NorbertoBocchi and Giorgio Duboin -- finished slightlymore than half a board ahead of Richard Finberg,Mark Lair, Gary Cohler, Mike Cappelletti andJerry Goldfein. The squad led by non-playing cap-tain Lou Ann O’Rourke (Billy Miller, CurtisCheek, Roger Bates, Ron Smith) was only a quar-ter of a board further back.

The Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams, a gru-eling six-session event played in the tough board-a-match format, is generally conceded to be oneof the toughest events on the ACBL calendar.

Last year’s event was so tough, in fact, thatthe Nick Nickell team (Richard Freeman, BobHamman, Paul Soloway, Jeff Meckstroth, EricRodwell) and the Rita Shugart team (AndrewRobson, Tony Forrester, Geir Helgemo) didn’tmake it to the final round.

The event is contested for the Reisinger Tro-phy (the Chicago Trophy until 1965). It is a six-session open team-of-four event scored by board-a-match with two qualifying sessions, two semi-final sessions and two final sessions. It was con-tested as a four-session championship until 1966.

The event began in 1929 as the North Ameri-can Open Team Championship and the prize wasthe Chicago Trophy, donated by the AuctionBridge Club of Chicago. (In 1928, the open teamcompetition was for the Harold S. Vanderbilt Cup.)

The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 bythe Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by theGreater New York Bridge Association in memoryof Curt H. Reisinger.

Reisinger (1891-1964), New York City, was aprincipal patron of contract bridge and the Ameri-can Contract Bridge League in the early years ofboth.

Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuserand a grandson of Busch, co-founders of the brew-ery from which he inherited great wealth. Thatwealth enabled him to become a stalwart finan-cial supporter of the game, as well as a noted phi-lanthropist on a far larger scale.

In the years when there was often a struggleto meet the League’s modest payroll, Reisingerwas often called upon and never failed to help witha loan or an outright gift. His support made pos-sible several early contract bridge tournaments, clubs and books.

Among the positions in which he served weredirector of the United States Bridge Association, president of the Greater New York Bridge Asso-ciation and chairman of the ACBL. In 1953,Reisinger was named ACBL Honorary Member.Winners1929 Max Cohen, Louis Haddad, Robert Halpin, Nils

RetekContinued from page 1him that I had thought that I was the first person in ourfamily to play bridge.

“No!” he replied, “Your father loved bridge.”“I don’t remember my father ever playing the game,”

I said, puzzled. My uncle then explained to me that when my father

and mother had gotten married, she insisted that he giveup the game and never mention it to his children. She didthis because my father loved to play rubber bridge forstakes that were beyond his means. When I asked wheremy father had learned to play, my uncle told me that hehad learned from his mother (my grandmother)!

So I come from a family of bridge players, althoughI didn’t know it until I was in my mid-thirties.

Bridge has been an important part of my life and hasintroduced me to some of my best and life-long friends. On the Board of Directors, my very best friend was thelate Bernard Warshauer from District 7. Mari and I arestill close to his wife Genie.

Also, I have probably the longest running partner-ship in Montreal with Brian Fraser. I really enjoy playingwith him. After we had played several years, I once askedhim, “ Why do you put up with me?”

He answered, “Because I like playing with a stron-ger player.”

I told him, “That’s crazy. You’re clearly the better player.”But therein was the secret to our long-term partnership: everybridge player wants to play with a stronger partner than him-self, and we each believe the other is better.

My philosophy of life, my guiding principles arethese: friendship, freedom and love. My friends are life-long, my early life taught me how precious freedom is,and love ... love requires no explanation.

Q: How did you become involved in bridge ad-ministration?

A: I started in the Seventies. First, I became the trea-surer for the Montreal Bridge League, and later I becamethe tournament chairman. In 1979, I ran for the ACBLBoard of Directors. When I was elected, Mari took overthe tournament chair responsibilities for the MBL anddid an excellent job for them for many years.

As part of the ACBL Board, I have served as chair-man of the finance committee and also as treasurer.

In 1989, I was elected as a representatives to the WorldBridge Federation. I became the WBF treasurer in 1990,and was elected WBF vice-president in 1998.

Q: Tell us about the upcoming world champion-ships in Montreal in 2002.

A: This is a dream come true for me, a project I havebeen working on for 15 years. I very much wantedMontreal to host a world championship, and it was veryexciting when the site was approved.

Montreal, a beautiful, cosmopolitan city, is one ofthe least-expensive major cities in the world.

We’re expecting some 6000 players to attend, includingmost of the top players in the world. Montreal will feature avery player-friendly schedule. If someone is eliminated froma knockout event, there is always some other contest he canenter. In addition, there will be a full regional schedule. FullWBF and ACBL masterpoints will be awarded in all events— two sets of masterpoints for the price of one. We believethat this will be the largest world championship ever.

Q: What would you like to accomplish during yourtenure as ACBL president?

A: First, I would like the organization to aim for provid-ing greater service at less cost. The ACBL’s overhead is ex-tremely high, and with the assistance of the Board and thenew CEO, I would like to examine ways to reduce it.

Secondly, I would like to continue our cooperationwith the WBF. We must strive to make bridge part of theOlympic games, and we must concentrate our efforts toget the U.S. Bridge Fedeartion accepted by the U.S. Olym-pic Committee. (The Canadian Bridge Federation hasalready cleared this hurdle. Through Retek’s efforts, theCBF has already been accepted as part of the CanadianOlympic Association as of December 2000.)

Lastly, I’d like to improve the relations betweenACBL and the CBF. One situation causing a lot of fric-tion is the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and thedeteriorating Canadian dollar. Canadian members haveexperienced a large increase in costs due to the exchangerate. On top of that, ACBL costs have risen some in thepast several years creating a situation viewed as harmfulby many Canadian members.

The Steven E. Furman Memorial Trust58 Collingwood RoadMaplewood NJ 07040.Kathie Wei-Sender, the ACBL’s ambassador of

bridge, plans to seek help from the ACBL Charity Foun-dation as well. Anyone interested in helping in this en-deavor should get in touch with Kathie.

At the time of his tragic death, Steven was not play-ing much bridge – he was too busy raising his family. He started getting interested in the game when he was14. He read a 300-page book about bidding becausehis stepfather promised to play a game at the local clubgame if he did. However, there was more to it than that– after he read the book, he had to pass Harold’s test. The family giggled and laughed – they didn’t think therewas a chance Steven could pass the test.

“Boy, were we wrong,” says his sister, JayneFurman of Las Vegas. “Steven aced the test.”

Not too long before Sept. 11, Steven wrote an emailto his brother Andrew expressing his concern for a NewJersey woman he didn’t know who was killed abroadin a terrorist attack. “He talked about keeping thememory of this woman alive,” said his brother, “andnow he himself is a victim of a terrorist attack.”

“Intellectually he was brilliant,” said his sister."Whatever he applied himself to, he could do.”

“He was too smart,” said Andrew. “He was an as-set to anyone who knew him.”

His mother Joyce naturally is having a very hardtime accepting the fact that her son is dead. Joyce her-self is fighting a terrible battle with cancer. “It’s been abad year,” she said.

Foreign players certainly are making their markon North American championships. Two players fromTurkey won the Blue Ribbon here. Players from Italyand Poland have been frequent winners over the years.Other major victors include players from Russia, En-gland, Norway, Brazil, Sweden, India and Pakistan.Others from countries like the Netherlands, France,China, Austria, Israel, Indonesia and Germany havecome close.

New Life MastersMarianne Cross made Life Master in the Fri-

day-Saturday Knockouts.Ranjan Bhaduri of Dundas ON earned his gold

card in the Friday-Saturday Knockouts. His part-ner was Raymond Jung of Hamilton ON.

Matt Fowler of Winston-Salem NC made thegrade in the Stratiflighted Swiss Teams. His part-ner was Deb Fowler of Salisbury NC, and histeammates were Gretchen and Dave Smith, alsoof Salisbury.

Julia Brown of Fairfax VA went over the topin the Aces High Knockouts.

Testing the kidsRemember the story about the Child Care young-

sters who are being taught to play bridge? Believe it ornot, they are given a test to see how much they havelearned. The tests indicate they have made greatprogress in learning how cards work.

Smoking policyThis is Las Vegas, so smoking regulations are very

lenient in hotels and casinos. But remember that onceyou cross into the convention area of the Hilton, you arein ACBL country and there is no smoking in the playingareas or pre-function areas. If you are playing in any Pa-vilion room or the Barron or Conrad rooms, the fastestsmoking access is outside on the patio. Those playing inthe ballroom may want to head toward the casino for asmoking break.

Online educationsoftware for e-bridgee-bridge has broadened its comprehensive package

of bridge services over the Internet (through its web site:www.e-bridgemaster.com ) by releasing an online educa-tion service. e-bridge’s management team is aware of thegreat demand for online bridge education, and the OES ise-bridge’s direct response to this need.

Pinhas Romik, founder, chairman and CEO of e-bridge, had this to say. “For the last six months, e-bridge’s development team in cooperation with a fewprominent bridge teachers worked to develop a propri-etary software that will enable online bridge educa-tion. The software enables teachers to create their ownonline courses, divided into lessons. The teacher candefine and fully describe various lesson topics, andinsert the hands that he/she wants to use as examplesfor bidding and play.

“Students who enter the education area will selectcourses of interest from the list of available courses.Once registered, students will be able to enter speciallesson rooms where the teacher will lecture and moni-tor play at all tables. The software will allow the teacherto show all hands, replay tricks and claim hands. Fur-thermore, the teacher will be able to interact with eachstudent while the student is bidding and playing thehand at the table.

“The software allows for multiple tables to displaythe same hand at the same time. Finally, after the handis finished, a written analysis will appear on thestudent’s screen if the teacher has inserted one. Thissoftware package covers all the needs to teach onlinebridge, and it provides students an opportunity to learnvarious bridge topics on line with a real teacher, frombasic bidding to advanced card play.”

Mike Lawrence, several times world champion andan effective author and teacher, participated in e-bridge’s system definition and testing. He said, “Onlineeducation is an excellent opportunity for bridge teach-ers and students. With modern technology now avail-able to teachers, it is possible to teach students at alllevels. I am looking forward to working with the e-bridge format”.

e-bridge online education package will be open forthe teachers to prepare their courses from December 1,2001. Interested teachers should contact [email protected] . From January 1, 2002 students willbe able to access available courses and to register tothe courses of interest. The service will be also avail-able on ACBL Online (www.acbl.com) to all ACBL-accredited teachers.
