be something more. When she saw a news story about someone that really needed a place to go for dinner, the light went on! The next morning, Lena was on the phone and “The Turkey Day Team” was started. “Our first year we had a budget of $200 and fed about 50 people”, Lena began. “This year is our 15th year and we have served about 500 people. We have outgrown a church, the Town Hall, and are now partnered with the Stockbridge Community Schools to use the beautiful cafeteria/auditorium at Heritage Elementary.” Lena went on to explain, “As long as the community wants the dinner, we’ll do it! People’s circumstances change all the time. Someone’s kids moved out of state or someone has become a widower and would love to have some company for dinner. People always ask if it’s free because it’s for people who can’t pay for it. The requirement is simple, you only have to be hungry!”, she said with a grin.

“The T.D. Team consists of: Anna Harutunian, Sandie Kay, Laurie Goodlock and myself (Lena Montgomery).” “However,” Lena adds “we have an incredible amount of volunteers ranging from age 7 to 70ish. It really is for the community, put on by the community. For example, Kay Batdorff has been baking pies for 15 years for us. “Inch”, owner of Hankerd Hills and his staff cook all of the turkeys for us each year. We send letters to the area businesses and churches asking for the funds needed to purchase the food. It’s wonderful to be part of such a caring community.”

When Lena isn’t planning for the Community Dinner, she enjoys reading, sewing, knitting and quilting. She says she gets great satisfaction out of her current project which is knitting 100% wool beanies for the soldiers in Iraq to wear under their helmets.

The digital converter boxes can be purchased at your local electronics store or over the internet. Most boxes cost between $40 - $60. You can apply for coupons to help pay for the converter boxes by going to www.dtv2009.gov and the coupons will be mailed to you. Each household will be able to get up to two coupons for $40 each. When you receive the coupons, be sure to check the expiration dates and be sure to use them before that date. If you have cable or satellite TV you do not need to buy a converter box. Your cable company may need to give you an additional receiver and they will notify you if you need one. If you receive your TV signal over the air through a “rabbit ear” or external antenna, you will need to purchase a converter box. Most converter boxes come with their own internal antenna. This antenna may not be strong enough for your area. If not, you will need to connect the converter box to your “rabbit ear” o r e x t e r n a l a n t e n n a . C h e c k www.antennaweb.org to see what channels are available and what type of antenna is recommended for your location. If you are wondering what the benefits of digital TV are, the main benefit is an improved picture and sound on both small as well as large TV’s without distortion. Also, many stations will be broadcasting more than one channel. For example, WKAR in East Lansing will be adding three additional channels to their broadcast, as will other stations. This will mean you should receive more channels than previously. To set-up your digital converter, be sure your antenna is connected to the input of the converter, and the output of the converter is connected to your TV set’s antenna input. Your converter may have an option (Switch or Menu setting) for the output channel (3 or 4). Use either 3 or 4 whichever comes in best and the TV should be set to the same channel. If you are using an indoor antenna, you may need to try several different locations in the room and move the orientation to see if you get a signal. It may take a few seconds to acquire the signal so go through these steps slowly and carefully. If you do not have a signal, you may need a better antenna, one with a pre-amplifier or an outdoor antenna. Again, this will depend on location so refer to www.antennaweb.org for antenna setup recommendations. Those of you that have cable should note that most cable companies are charging for the rental of a converter box. The converter box referred to as the digital tuner (ATSC tuner) needed for over-the-air broadcasters is different from the cable company’s box – the two are not interchangeable. Cable companies will be making many changes to account for this transition of broadcasters from analog to digital. This means that some TV’s may work without converters (QAM tuner) and some will not (analog TV’s). Again, I suggest you check out www.dtv2009.gov and your local cable company for additional information and their recommendations. Rest assured, this seemingly complex process will be much simpler than it sounds. Also, if you do not have the internet available at home, remember your area library does and can be very helpful in looking up the suggested sites. Ready or not…here it comes!

Stockbridge Middle School Splits with Albion

Alex Noffsinger - Student Sports Writer

There are major powerhouses in

college basketball like Duke, North Carolina, Florida, Michigan State, and Syracuse who sport fantastic teams year in and year out. In the SMAA Albion and Lansing Christian usually put acceptable teams on the court. This year Stockbridge Middle School Basketball has done very well itself. The annual power and the annual sacrificial meat faced off on Monday. The Stockbridge teams are a combined 7-4 going into Monday the 24th.

The 7th grade team kicked the game off in good fashion taking a lead. Garrett Battle and Skeeter Ballagh hit a couple of three pointers to boast the Panthers to a 1st quarter lead at the end. Garrett Battle was a huge contributor in the 1st. The Panthers continued their aggressive play in the 2nd. The Wildcats came back at the end of the 2nd quarter to cut the deficit to 24-16 at half. Coach Allison was not happy with giving up the large lead and in the 3rd the Panthers came out firing on all cylinders. At the start of the the 4th quarter the game was all but over even though Albion showed its natural instinct of never giving up. Kaleb Grammer just missed a double-double with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. Skeeter Ballagh also contributed 11 points. The leading scorer was Garrett Battle with 12 points, Zach Runciman had 4 points, Lucas Showerman had 2 points, Tyler Patrick had 2 points, Evan Fletcher also had 2 points followed by Jesus Cordero with 1 point. Short was Albion’s leading scorer with 9 points followed by Lane with 8 points and 7 rebounds. Albion out rebounded Stockbridge by one board 28-27.

The 8th grade team then squared off against Albion. Stockbridge got out to a quick lead to see it evaporate on a huge Albion run that left the Panthers shuffling into halftime down by 6 points. It was a comeback for the Panthers during the 3rd quarter leading into the 4th. In the 4th the Panthers fought back to tie the game with some last second heroics from Devin Allen and John Mason to send the game into overtime. In overtime the Panthers struggled to score but managed to keep it close. A couple tough calls and a few bad breaks doomed the Panthers to an overtime loss. The Panthers improved to 8-5 after splitting the pair of games. Look for the Panthers to be in action on Monday against their SMAA foes Leslie.

Editors Note: We thank Alex for his submission of MS basketball action in Stockbridge this week. If you would like to be a Student Writer please contact us. We are looking for writers in Dansville, Leslie, and Stockbridge to help represent your schools sports teams.

And All Good Things Must End The Leslie High School football team has nothing to hang their heads about after their historic 2008 campaign. The Blackhawks made their first ever trip to the state finals where they faced Montague for the Division 6 State Title. Montague won the game 41 - 20, but the Hawks will forever have the memories of this season. Leslie found themselves down 21 - 0 in the first 5:30 of the game as Montague seemed to pull big play after big play from their bag of tricks, but Leslie clawed back to play even with the Wildcats for the remainder of the game. The turning point of the game seemed to come with just under 3:00 to go in the 1st half with Montague holding a 21 - 6 edge. Leslie had a first and goal from the seven, but turned the ball over on downs at the two yard line. The Leslie defense appeared to stop the quarterback in the endzone for a safety on 1st down, but the officials ruled that the Montague quarterback’s forward progress had gotten him back out of the endzone. Montague completed a 98-yard touchdown pass two plays later off a tipped pass to turn the momentum back in their favor. Instead of being down 21 - 8 with the ball, Leslie found themselves in a 28 - 6 hole

that would prove too much to overcome. Devyn Twombley led all rushers with 120 yards on 10 carries. Travis Crowe rushed for 65 yards on 11 carries and threw for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trent Page rushed for 50 yards and caught 2 passes for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns. The most telling trait of this group of young men was refusal to quit. Down 21 - 0 that early in the game might cause there to be some downcast attitudes, but Leslie played as they had all year long - with the heart of champions.

Blackhawk Hall of Fame Nominees Sought

Nominations are being sought for the Blackhawk Hall of Fame. Nominees can be former Leslie athletes, coaches, teams or "at large" program contributors who have exemplified character, pride, and spirit and have attained a significant level of Leslie High School athletic success. Athletes must be a Leslie High School graduate out of school for at least 10 years. If the nominee is a coach, he or she must have coached in the Leslie system for at least 10 years and if a team is nominated, they must be nominated 10 years after the year they played together. "At-large" nominees must have made significant contributions to the Leslie athletic program. Nomination form available on page 9.

Trent Page cruises into the end zone with a convoy.

Laying it Out on Front Street By: Corinda Hackworth

Writing an introduction is the hardest part of any article. You must immediately captivate the audience and keep them mesmerized with intrigue and humor. So, here comes said intrigue, and the latter will follow, ideally.

Currently, I’m employed by Stockbridge Schools as a Satellite Server at the Middle School. Okay, okay, I’m a lunch lady. Not just any lunch lady, mind you. I am THE A La Carte Lady. I am the one who sells overpriced ice cream, chips and Bosco Sticks to “starving” adolescents. I love my job and I adore the kids because they make me laugh. Every day they remind me what is most important in life and put into perspective what really matters most: food.

Over the years I have learned so many things about life, about love and mostly about myself in this quaint little village. And now in this moment, I am fulfilling a lifelong dream of having my own newspaper column. And I’ll admit it; I still flush with pride at seeing my name in print. I’m still red with embarrassment and pleasure, looking around wondering, “Does anyone know it’s me? Do they know I wrote this?” I love the fact that I can (hopefully) hold your vision and ultimately your attention hostage for 90 seconds and leave you captivated by my wit and wisdom. I’d be delighted if you could walk away smiling at something I’ve written. Ah, vanity, thy name is Corinda.

Because my goal for this column is to make you laugh. Nicholas Chamfort once said, “The most thoroughly wasted of all days is that on which one has not laughed.” Life is tough and serious and the economy is crap and we don’t laugh nearly often enough. Did you know that the average child laughs 400 times a day, while the average adult manages only 17? Seriously.

We all need a break from reality, if only for a minute or two. And that is where I come in. I think of this as the Seinfeld of journalism. I’d love to talk about nothing and make you laugh while doing it.

I’d love nothing more than for you to pick up the paper and turn specifically to my column, if for no other reason than to have a laugh. I’d rather you laugh at what I’ve written because it’s witty, comical and full of puns. But if you end up laughing at my stupidity or my mistakes, that’s okay too. You’ve had your laugh, albeit at my expense, but mission accomplished!

I hope that in these few paragraphs you feel like you’ve gotten to know me a little bit. And in the coming weeks, I’d like for you to get to know me better. To the point where you feel you can stop me on the street and talk because you feel like we know one another.

So now that we’ve been introduced, why don’t we, like the photographer said to the camera, see what develops? Ba-dum, ching!

Remembering Thanksgiving

The first Thanksgiving was remembered Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Smith Elementary in Stockbridge when Beverly Glenn’s first grade class and their families enjoyed a potluck dinner of turkey, corn, potatoes, and all the trimmings. Following dinner, students (each in his or her choice of Pilgrim or Na-tive American Costume) entertained their families and friends with songs of turkeys, Native Americans, and thanks. Mrs. Glynn’s 1st Grade Class enjoyed a Thanksgiving

program with their families.
