Holiday Greetings messages at the PX

18 Oct: Every year around the holiday season, the Joint Hometown News Service hosts a Holiday Greetings gathering

to give Service members, Civilians, and Families the opportunity to come out and send holiday greetings to love ones from their hometown. This year, AFN will be videotaping these greetings in front of the East Camp Grafenwoehr PX, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., on Thursday Oct. 18. Your favorite AFN DJs will also be broadcasting live from the PX so come on out and send your greeting.

Nuremberg train station bans alcohol on weekends Starting 19 Oct: The Deutsche Bahn (DB) has banned alcohol in Nuremberg Main Station, from 8 p.m. - 6 a.m. on

Friday and Saturday nights. The regulation is based on the owner’s right of the DB and amends the existing regulations.

USAG Grafenwoehr Trick-or-Treat safety tips Safety tips for all: * All children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. * Escorts should conduct

themselves in a safe and orderly fashion * Residents in leased or economy housing are encouraged to escort their children to the nearest military housing area to participate. * Trick-or-treaters are required to use flashlights, battery-operated lanterns or Safety Light Sticks – the practice of carrying burning candles is prohibited! * Escorts should wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing. * All motorists are reminded to drive with extreme caution. Most of the Halloween costumes are dark in color and difficult to see. In addition, Halloween masks often limit the child’s vision. * Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to go to residences and stairwells that are well-lit. Residents who are participating should ensure that their porches or stairwell entrances are well-lit and kept free of obstacles – plan to present candy at the stairwell entrances. Safety tips for kids: Cross only at corners. Never cross between parked cars. Walk facing oncoming traffic if there is no sidewalk. Always remove masks before crossing streets. Beware of cars turning into or backing out of driveways. Never go into a stranger’s house. Safety tips for adults: Know the route your children will be taking. Make sure children are accompanied by an adult. Know what other activities a child may be attending, such as parties. Set time limits on when children should return home. Explain to children the

difference between tricks and vandalism. Instruct children not to eat treats until they return home and parents have had a chance to inspect those treats. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Bavaria Military Community to host Retiree Appreciation Day 19 Oct: The retired military community is invited to attend the Bavaria Military Community Retiree Appreciation Day,

Friday, Oct. 19, from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., Grafenwoehr Bldgs. 244 and 475. Meet other retirees from your area, make friends and share stories of living in Germany. The opening ceremony will be at 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. at Bldg. 244. Winter vehicle safety checks

1 Nov: The Grafenwoehr Car Care Center. Bldg. 326, is hosting a free vehicle safety check from 9-11 a.m. The checks

include tires, lights, defrost, emergency kits and internal carbon monoxide readings.

Changes to Community Bus Schedules Starting 1 Nov: The government-operated buses between Grafenwoehr and Rose Barracks have slightly changed

their schedules. AKO account holders may find the new schedules here. Residents along route G-4 (Kemnath/Erbendorf/Pressath) will experience the most severe changes. While Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday continue with the current schedule, the runs on Wednesday and Friday start 75 minutes earlier in the morning and 30 minutes earlier in the afternoon to allow more time on post for appointments. DA Photo studios appointments available The Department of the Army Photo studio located in Rose Barracks Bldg. 247 is renovated and now includes two studios. Services members can schedule appointments at www.vios.army.mil in one of two studios by selecting either "DA Photo Studio 1" or "DA Photo Studio 2" from a drop down menu. Mandatory direct deposit of retiree checks by 1 March 2013 A treasury mandate will soon require DFAS, Cleveland to pay retirees and annuitants by electronic funds transfer. Beginning 1 March 2013, most retirees and annuitants will be required to receive their pay directly to their saving or checking accounts. For retirees and annuitants living in Europe there are a couple of ways to start direct deposit:

For retirees and annuitants who have an American bank account and want to use that – complete a fast start direct deposit form, sign it and mail it DFAS. Ensure to keep a copy for your records.

Use your mypay account to set up a direct deposit to your american bank/credit union saving or checking account

Call DFAS at the customer care center at 888-332-7411 and have the information available to do it telephonically (American banks only).

For people who wish to use an international bank – use the international direct deposit form and ensure to include the IBAN number in place of the account number on the form and mail to dfas or provide to your local RSO for processing.

Grafenwoehr Consolidated Exchange Opens Doors to Local Vendors While the economy may have forced some retailers to scale back on merchandise or services, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service is actively seeking the assistance of local businesses to increase the product selection troops and their families find at their Exchange. “Some shoppers drive up to 40 miles or more to come to the Grafenwoehr Exchange,” said the Exchange’s General Manager Carl Carpenter. “The addition of local, small, minority, women- and veteran-owned businesses can help provide the diversity, value and innovation to further enhance their shopping experience.” Partner businesses, called concessions, operate in Exchange-provided space, primarily in the concession retail mall areas found in Hohenfels, Grafenwoehr, Rose Barracks and at the new Ansbach. Benefits include contracts based on a percentage of revenue, a variety of space and merchandising setups and the convenience of being located with the anchor retail store and food outlets. The Exchange will also assist in marketing and promoting partner businesses to help maximize awareness on and around installation name. Exchange Cutest Kiddo Contest The Army and Air Force Exchange Service is searching across the globe for the most adorable kid. Exchange shoppers can visit the Exchange’s Facebook page to upload a photo and enter the “3rd Annual Cutest Kiddo Contest.” The child with the most votes will receive a Disney Cruise Trip for four to the Bahamas plus a $500 Exchange Gift Card. The new Exchange Mobile Center provides cell phones and service The Exchange Mobile Center/SIGA Telecom now provides competitively priced packages to Exchange customers, including top-model phones, accessories, and voice and data plans through major carriers. Previous contracts with cellular phone companies through TKS will continue and EMC representatives will work with carriers to ensure needs and service carrier requirements are met. EMC representatives can assist in modifications such as phone upgrades and contract fee questions. By providing multiple carriers, EMC offers flexibility and choice that single carrier stores can’t offer. Wireless services can be suspended if a service member is deployed, and EMC representatives will facilitate the transition with the cellular carriers. TKS will continue to offer residential fixed line bundle services of home telephone, internet and cable TV.

Good grades pay off at the Grafenwoehr Exchange

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service rewards military students who excel. Students who receive a report card with a “B” average or better can choose an array of free and discounted products through the Grafenwoehr Exchange’s “You Made the Grade” program. Now in its 12th year, “You Made the Grade” includes a free Burger King hamburger kids meal, Subway 6-inch combo, a magazine of their choice and even a complimentary haircut. Students “making the grade” can also register for a drawing to win a $2,000, $1,500 or $500 Exchange gift card. To receive a “You Made the Grade” booklet, eligible students present a valid military ID and proof of a “B” or better average to the Grafenwoehr Exchange. Students may receive one coupon package for every qualifying report card, but may enter the gift card drawing only once per grading period.

Grafenwoehr main store shuttles increase selection Rose Barracks and Hohenfels: The Army & Air Force Exchange Service is delivering increased selection, savings and service with its “Shuttle Program.” To ensure military families around Grafenwoehr enjoy the same selection, merchandise can be shuttled to those in Rose Barracks and Hohenfels per customer requests at the customer service counter found at their local Exchange. Everything from furniture to tactical gear can be transferred through the “Shuttle Program.” If a customer doesn’t see what they’re looking for, they can ask an Exchange manager if the item can be shipped from another location. The “Shuttle Program” is a free service at all Exchanges around the world. Ask your customer service associates for details.

Attn. Soldier Athletes Soldiers in Europe wanting to compete in higher level sports program must now go online with a new application site. The site is: https://apps.imcom.army.mil/apptrac.Female and male Soldier athletes and coaches can be selected and tryout for 29 sports that lead to All-Army, armed forces, world military (CISM) and even the Olympics. Soldier athletes must apply for selection into the program. Commander’s approval will be mandatory before being considered by All-Army staff. Soldiers have been competing or coaching on every U.S. Olympic team since 1948. Soldiers have medaled in shooting, basketball, wrestling, boxing, weight lifting, track and field, equestrian and modern pentathlon.

Thirty-one Soldiers earned eight gold and six silver medals in a wide variety of competition dating back to 1948. Depending on the sport and event, selected Soldiers may complete up to one to three months depending on the sport. Soldiers when they return to their units are in better physical shape than when they left and are more motivated than when they went off to the training camp. Rose Barracks Vilseck Community Bank Renovation

The Rose Barracks Vilseck Community Bank will be renovated in Bldg. 224 starting mid September for a 3-4 month period. In the meantime, banking services to the Vilseck military community will be provided in Bldg 164, near the Warrior Transition Unit. Signs will be posted, directing customers to the new location. National Testing Center (NTC) News The NTC, operated by University of Maryland, will soon relocate to another location while renovations are being made at the Vilseck Education Center, Bldg 223. The date for the move has yet to be determined. It is highly recommended that persons interested in testing routinely contact the NTC at DSN 476-2462, CIV 09662-83-2462 to find out about availability of the facility. Contacting the NTC might prevent individuals from paying Pearson Vue a re-registration fee ($150+) in case the facility is not available due to their move to a different location or registering on line for exams outside normal operating hours. The Vilseck NTC only operates 20 hours per week and in the past individuals have registered for exams on line outside of established hours of operations.

22-23 Nov: NO SCHOOL. Thanksgiving Break Child Find: What is child-find screening? Preschool Child Find is a developmental screening for children ages 3-5 identifying children with developmental delays or other special education needs. For children under age 3 please contact EDIS at 09662-833221. What is the process? A Child Find team made up of the preschool special needs service provider, speech and language pathologists and the occupational therapist screen the children for developmental delays. These free screenings take place monthly. How does it work? Parent submits the Child Find questionnaire (which they can pick up in the office or find on the school website); they are set up with an appointment for the screening. When they come in for the screening the child must first pass a vision and hearing screen by our school nurse. Then they are screened by the team. If the child is suspected of having any delays the team will refer them for further formal evaluation. Why is it important? Yes, Frankenstein Castle really exists, namely in pretty Hessen. Today it is used as a unique Event Restaurant (only GE). And one of these unique events is the wonderfully gruesome Hallowe'en (only GE)! This year, the evil spirit of Captain Blackbeard has made its way to the castle, as there were no more ships on the Rhine that he could capture.

Meteor Shower

21 & 22 Oct: Peak nights for the Orionids meteor shower. This shower produces "only" about 20 meteors per hour at

their peak. Predicting its busiest night is a bit difficult as the shower is highly irregular. A good show might be experienced on any morning between 20 and 24 Oct. The dim light of the first-quarter moon , which will set by midnight anyway, will not spoil the show. Best viewing will be to the East after midnight. Viewing tips.

775th Anniversary of Berlin: "Jubiläumsfest"

28 Oct: in Berlin. This fest is the culmination of their celebrations for their 775th anniversary. The festivities begin with a

church service in the Marienkirche with the Lord Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and many other local dignitaries. In the afternoon, these dignitaries will attend the festive opening of the Jubiläumsfest in the Nikolaikirche (church). The fun parts happen in the Nikolaiviertel, the medieval quarter around the Poststraße with the Nikolaikirche (just south of the famous Berlin TV tower; U-Bahn stations Alexanderplatz and Klosterstraße are near-by). A medieval market will keep you entertained throughout the whole weekend. On Sunday, with the onset of dusk, you can enjoy a fascinating fire show with the "Compagnie Carabosse" (only GE), and street theater with "Titanick". The fiery illuminations take place between Marienkirche and Neptunbrunnen fountain, along Spandauer Straße all the way to the Nikolaikirche. Around 800 fire spots will illuminate the outline of Berlin's medieval city limits.

All Saints Day holiday

1 Nov: All German stores and authorities are closed, and the local national workforce will be off.

Traditionally, this is the day in Germany when relatives visit the graves of their dearly departed, so you might see a lot of activity in the afternoons on the cemeteries. The graves will have been cleaned and decorated specially for this day, for the last time before winter sets in. Usually in the afternoons, masses will be held and the graves, along with the dearly departed, will be blessed by the priest.
