You known you're allergic when you react to certain sub-

stances you've been exposed to before. For instance, you may

have eaten shellfish before but the next time you eat foods con-

    taining shellfish, you develop rashes.

An allergy occurs when your body overreacts to things that

don't normally cause problems for most people. These things are

called allergens and your bodys over reaction to them are what

    causes allergy symptoms.

    Common Allergy Symptoms

    * Runny nose

    * Watery eyes

    * Itchy nose, eyes, and roof of mouth

    * Sneezing

    * Stuffy nose

    * Pressure in the nose and cheeks

    * Ear fullness and popping

    * Dark circles under the eyes

    * HivesWhat Causes these Allergy Symptoms?

No one really knows why someone develops allergy. Studies

have shown that allergy may be hereditary or genetic. Others say

that allergy is just something that develops over time and disap-

pears, also over time. But one thing is certain, there are certain

specific factors found in the environment that can trigger the

    body to develop allergy symptoms.

The most common allergen is pollen from trees, grass, and

weeds. Allergy symptoms caused by these allergens often occur

in the spring (late April and May) and may also occur late in the

summer (late May to mid-July). Ragweed allergens may also

cause allergy symptoms in the fall (late August to the first frost).

In direct contrast to pollen, which is airborne, molds are con-

tracted by contact through the skin. Mold is common where

water tends to collect, such as shower curtains, window moldings

and damp basements. It can also be found in rotting logs, hay,

mulches, commercial peat moss, compost piles, and leaf litter.

Allergy symptoms caused by molds become worse during humid

    and rainy weather.

Another common type of allergen is animal dander. These are

proteins found in the skin, saliva, and urine of furry pets, such as

cats and dogs. You can develop allergy symptoms from handling

an animal or from coming into contact with house dust, contain-

    ing dander.

Various more allergens are contained in dust. One of them is

dust mites, which are tiny living creatures found in bedding, mat-

tresses, carpeting, and upholstered furniture. These mites live on

dead skin cells and other things found in house dust, and coming

into contact with them may result in allergy symptoms. How to Control Allergy Symptoms?

Unless you live in a vacuum, it is extremely difficult to avoid

allergens all together. But with a little management and control,

you can reduce the occurrence of allergy symptoms caused by

    these allergens.

Keeping clean is always the first step in controlling allergy

symptoms. Before bedtime, it is advisable to shower or bathe to

wash off pollen and other allergens in your hair and skin. You can

also reduce the amount of mold in your home by frequently

cleaning those places where mold often accumulates.

Avoid going outside the home during dry, windy days. Keep

windows and doors shut, and use an air conditioner at home and

in your car. This is one way to keep yourself from developing

allergy symptoms caused by pollen and other airborne allergens.

One of the keys to weight loss is figuring out how toboost your metabolic rate and believe it or not, its notrocket science. Here are 7 of the top ways for you toboost your metabolism and keep it that way:

Increase Protein: Protein helps to stabilize insulinsecretion into your blood, which can affect metabolism;aim for a minimum of 70 grams or more each day.

Aerobic Workouts 3 X Week: Though exercise doesn'taffect your resting metabolic rate, the extra calories youburn could add up to an additional 1-2 pounds ofweight loss per month.

Build Muscle Mass: Weight routines or strengthtraining builds lean muscle tissue, which burns morecalories at work or at rest, 24/7. The more lean muscle, the faster your metabolism.

Dont Skip Meals or Drastically Reduce CaloricIntake: If your body senses that food is limited, it willslow your metabolism to conserve energy and overtime, the result is that when you do eat your body willbe slower to use the calories and create a storage ofunwanted pounds. Be sure is to cut your caloric intake

by no more than 500 calories per day and never less

    than 1200 per day.

Increase Daily Activity: Make a significant additionto the number of calories you burn each day with rela-

tively minor changes in lifestyle, like taking the stairs

instead of the elevator; park further away from the mall

or office; or window-shop with your best friend rather

than sit over coffee. These types of changes for just 20

minutes of your day will burn an additional 100 calories

per day or an additional pound per month.

Take an Evening Walk: Evening physical activity may

be particularly beneficial. Since people's metabolism

slows down toward the end of the day, 30 minutes of

activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and

may keep it elevated for another 2-3 hours.

Get Enough ZZZs: According to researchers, women

who got less than 4 hours of sleep per night had a slow-

er metabolism than those who slept for a full 8 hours.

Muscles, the storehouse of energy in a liv-ing body, contract to help in the movement ofdifferent parts of the body. The general bodycomposition consists largely of voluntarymuscles. It is called voluntary because itscontraction and movement is consciouslycontrolled by the living being. Sometimes, these voluntary muscles contract involuntar-ily and refuse to relax and return to normalcy. This is called a Muscle Cramp. MuscleCramps are forceful contractions that sustainfor sometime and reappear, often till themuscles relax. Cramps can happen to any vol-untary muscle, mostly bending or curling theaffected muscle.

Muscle Cramps come from the vigoroususe of muscles. Cramp can result when a

muscle or group of muscles that acts togetherin the movement of a certain part of the bodyforcefully become involuntary. For instance, athletes often complain of Muscle Cramps incalf muscles. But when it affects the feet, thegroup of muscles in the fingers too getscramps.

Muscle Cramps occur dueto various reasons. These canbe dehydration or excessiveloss of body fluid due to vig-orous exercise or activities ofthe muscle; or a musclefatigue caused mostly from along rest period for musclesin one position or exertion ofmuscles leading to injury. Itmay also happen from somekinds of muscle disease. It is

not always necessary for the cramps to attack

'over activated' muscles. Muscle Cramps can

attack even when the muscles are at rest or

dormant for a very long time. For instance,

sitting in the same position for a very long

time can cause muscle fatigue and may later

become a cramp. Most of the cramps come

especially at night, like the cramps in the calf

muscle. This last for some time till the bend

    muscles flex and relax.

Muscle spasm and Muscle Cramp may

seem to be the same. But a Muscle Cramp,

unlike a muscle spasm, affects only a certain

muscle. The affected muscle bulges or rolls

and hurts till it gets its normal shape. Cramps

can thus affect anyone, anytime and any-

where. Muscle Cramps affect pregnantwomen too. Hence as a p recaution, their diet

is supplemented with calcium and magne-

sium. Cramps can be kept at bay through

exercises, especially stretch exercises, a nutri-

tious balanced diet and proper water intake.
