Our thoughts go out to the people of Japan dealingwith the aftermath of such a huge earthquake and

subsequent tsunami. We are once again reminded of

how vulnerable we are living on the coast and the im-

portance of having appropriate evacuation plans and

procedures in place. We will be reviewing our proce-

dures to ensure the safety of our children and staff inthe event of a natural disaster.

If an emergency occurs (Tsunami) the Principal/

Deputy Principal will raise the alarm, at which pointstudents will evacuate the buildings and assemble at

the designated area (courts). Classroom attendance

registers will be checked and when all children andstaff are accounted for, we will make our way acrossthe Main Road and up the hill to Tairua Heights. In the

case of a tsunami it is important for parents and care-

givers to understand they are not to come to school tocollect their child. We will return to school after the Po-

lice and or Civil Defence give us the all clear. Text

messages will be sent to parents at the earliest oppor-

tunity. With somewhat persistent natural events occur-

ring weekly/monthly I would encourage every house-

hold to review their safety plan and check their sur-

vival kits.

Parent / Teacher Conferences:Looking at our initial figures, this years parent/teacherconference attendance is on par with 2010. The pur-

pose of these conferences is to communicate chil-

dren's achievement levels and formulate learning

make an appointment this week please pop in and

catch up with the classroom teacher to organise an

alternate time.

Visitors to the School:

This Thursday we have large number of teachersfrom neighbouring schools onsite to observe andlearn from Mrs Bracegirdle. The purpose of the visit is

to share and communicate how the P.M.P

(Perceptual Motor Programme) is delivered within arelevant and meaningful learning context. The P.M.P

are the necessary foundation skills for formal learning

in the classroom. Balance, eye tracking, co-

ordination exercises that are fun and exciting for chil-

dren to engage in and develop the essential skills

required for learning.

Beach Hop Comes toTairua:

Next Thursday the 24th of

March, Tairua will host 400+

beach hop cars at the Pepe

reserve. Our children will man

the fence line from 10:00-10:45 welcoming the visitors to town. Once again we

have the opportunity to run a BBQ at the reserve to

raise funds towards our Room 5 camp. If you areable to assist us at Pepe reserve from 10:00am to

1:00pm please pop into the office for more details.

School Website:We are in the final stages of completing a new

school website for Tairua School. Mark Hemmings has

constructed and developed a website that truly

identifies what Tairua School has to offer and why weare so unique. Using images, text, video and kids

work samples, the website promotes our Citizenship

concept, experiential and relevant curriculum andwhat our school looks like in action. When your child

enrolled we did ask parents to sign an agreement

that allows the school to use photos and work sam-ples in a range of media forums. If you have any is-

sues with images of your child being used on ourwebsite or are unsure if you filled in the consent form

please pop into the office for a catch up.

Swimming Season:

As we head into week 7, we are aware that the airtemperature is continuing to drop making our swim-

ming sessions a little tough. The pool itself is still reach-

children may find it too cold. If you are still using theschool pool in the afternoons and in the weekends,

please allow the cover to sit in the water at the

deep, rather than take it off fully. Thank you.

Room 5, Slipper Island Challenge:Our Slipper Island Challenge is fast approaching andplanning is under way for a successful trip to SlipperIsland. The date for the trip is Wednesday 6thThursday 7th, Week 10 of Term 1. Students will be in-volved in group challenges over a 24 hour period simi-off the island in the Tairua Survivor Camp (this time!).Challenges will include swimming, kayaking, snorkel-ing, tramping, beach activities, co-operative gamesand fishing. Tomorrow the 16th of March the Student leaders have or-

in Christchurch. There will be a parade at 9:10 with prizes

for best dressed. There will be a sausage sizzle ($2) and

juicies ($1) for sale with all proceeds going to the Christ-

church community. We have a special surprise for the

school at 2:00. If you would like to pop along to the parade
