Katherine High School

Welcome to new and returning staff, students and parents. I hope everyone has had a good break in preparation for the coming year. We have a had very smooth start to the year and this is thanks to a lot of behind the scenes work undertaken by our administra-tion staff and to the efforts in the classroom by our teachers. There is still some fine tuning to occur as some classes are at capacity, the Year Coordinators and Assistant Principals will be working to address this issue over the next week to finalise any class changes. All changes will be finalised by Friday next week. In 2011 Year Co odinators will play a much larger role within the school and Parents are encouraged to make contact with the Classroom Teacher if it is a Classroom issue but to

contact the appropriate Coordinator if there are issues beyond the classroom that you would like to discuss. Our Year Coordinators will be working hard to make contact with parents and to follow up any concerns to ensure your child is provided the level of support he or she requires to be successful. Our results from 2010 were excellent with two of our students Ted Haggar and Zoe Knight receiving TERs of 94.5 and 94 respectively. Emily Hearden achieved an ATAR of 86 and with the remote schools and subject choices bonus points achieved a 98.5 Uni-versity Entrance Score which gave her the marks to get into the University course of her choice. Con-gratulations to Ted, Zoe and Emily on outstanding results. Our NTCE completion rate in 2010 was 88%, only one other School in the NT had a higher completion rate than Katherine High School. There were six Indigenous boys who achieved their NTCE and all six are now in fulltime employment here and around Katherine. A special mention to Tim Lowe who achieved excellent scores to gain his NTCE and also to Geoffrey Ross who after a very challenging year was able to complete his NTCE with his peers, was an outstanding ef-fort. Congratulations to all our 2010 graduates and I wish them all the best for their future. To all new parents welcome to the Katherine High School community, please take advantage of the number of information evenings and school events to become involved in the school. Please use your child’s diary to communicate with the school and don’t hestitate to ring the school or contact the school via email if you have any serious concerns.

Parent-Teacher Meet & Greet - Week 3

All students have been issued with diaries and they will be an integral part of communica-tion with the home - particularly with the settting of homework. Parents are asked to check and sign diaries on a weekly basis. Book Packs are still available for purchase for $30. Par-ents can use their back-to-school vouchers for these if they haven’t already done so.

There has been a space provided in the student diaries for parents to enter a contact email address. This email address will be used by class teachers to negotiate parent-teacher inter-views, notify parents of upcoming events, as well as for the distribution of the newsletter.

To all our students and families welcome back to an exciting new year of school. A special welcome to our new students, parents and staff members, I trust that you will find KHS a fulfilling place to learn and work.

As we start a new year, full of anticipation for the many things that will be achieved by our students and staff this year, I would like to share with you a letter written recently to KHS by a father of a 2010 year 12 student: “I just wanted to let all the Year 12 teachers what a great service they provided for my daughter Emily, help-ing her complete her studies last year.

As you may know she achieved a solid TER score of 86.5. However that is not the complete picture.

SATAC, the body representing higher education in South Australia, allots additional points based on subject selection, study processes, school location and so forth. Based on their rankings Em was granted additional points taking her final score to 98.5, a grade that essentially was so high as to enable her to choose virtually whatever course she wanted.

As a parent, looking back, I believe that if she had chosen a capital city based high school or college to com-plete her year 12 studies, rather than Katherine High School, it is highly unlikely that she could have achieved such a strong score. Your teachers deserve credit!

She has chosen a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science starting in late February 2011, and now is happily ensconced in a share house in Adelaide. I know that she would be happy to hear from any Katherine friends if they are that way.

Greetings from the Assistant Principal Middle Years. I wish you all a very Happy New Year. The school year has begun and we are busier than ever!

There are many things to do at KHS and I’d like to urge you all to take advantage of the many camps and excursions, sporting activities and events such as the Swimming and Athletics Carnivals to name a few. We are planning a trip to Canberra and Melbourne in Term 3 for year 9 students so please look out for further information on this on the website, Intranet and through the newsletters.

Coming up next week is a meet and greet the teachers so you can touch base with them and address any concerns or questions you may have. Remember that the email is probably the quickest and easiest method of contact with teachers as they’ll be able to answer your query when they are not in class.
