WHAT? Introduction to Public Speaking UnitWHY? To gain an understanding of the requirements of the upcoming units. HOW? Class discussion, note taking, view clips.

TASK ONE:WHAT MAKES A GOOD PUBLIC SPEAKER?Students are introduced to the concept of public speaking. Brainstorm with the class what they think makes a good public speaker. Write ideas on board.

*Make a note to students that this is NOT a persuasive writing unit, rather an expository or explanation of a topic.

TASK TWO:INTRODUCE/RECAP NOTE TAKING TEMPLATE:Self-explanatory. PowerPoint attached.

TASK THREE:WATCH AHN DO’S KEY NOTE ADDRESS:1 – Watch through once. Simply listen and take in the story. 2 – Class discussion about what was watched. The story, the way he presented it, how he changed from joking to serious and back again. 3 – Watch again and take notes. ‘What makes this speech work?’ 4 – Discuss findings. 5- If time permitting, there are some very funny clips from Ahn Do’s comedy shows.

WHAT? Public speaking championWHY? To see how it can be done!HOW? Watch Toastmakers World Public Speaking Champion, contribute to class discussion and complete basic analysis.

WHAT? Brainstorm ideas and topic for speech WHY? To generate ideas and thoughts for our class presentations.

TASK FOUR:ASSESSMENT TASK PART ONE (INTRO):Introduce the assessment task to students. This may seem very early in the unit but it is a good opportunity to get students thinking about possible topics and planning.

TASK FIVE:MORE ANALYSIS OF EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKERSStudents are to complete this activity in a similar format to Ahn Do’s speech. Watch once for understanding and watch a second time taking notes using template.

Followng class discussion and using dot point form, explain how Mohammed Qahtani used the requirements as set out in our assessment task. (Eg: Hook, eye contact, rhetorical questions, prop/visual stimuli etc.)

TASK SIX:BRAINSTORM IDEAS AND TOPICSConduct a brainstorming session where students can share ideas and contribute to a class master list of

HOW? Teacher led brainstorm followed with class discussion.

WHAT? How to prepare and combat the nerves WHY? To generate discussion and conversation about how to combat nerves and worries about presenting to the class. HOW? Watch video followed with class discussion.

WHAT? Preparation Time WHY? To create an effective and speech to be presented to class mates. HOW? Use class time to decide on topics, conduct research, begin to write, edit and rehearse speeches

ideas. Students are encouraged to share what hook or props might go well with these ideas.

TASK SEVEN:BUT I DON’T LIKE PUBLIC SPEAKING…!?Watch video that deals with combatting nerves and concerns about speaking in public. A humorous take on how to best prepare.

TASK EIGHT: BEGIN PREPARING SPEECH!The time has now come to start planning and preparing your speech. Set a due date and work out a plan to meet the deadline.

It cannot be stressed enough how much you need to plan, prepare and practice your speeches.

Students should utilise break out spaces, interview rooms and their laptop/phone cameras to film and critique their presentations before final presentation.

Presentations should run over a couple of days. Pull

Ensure that students find the right balance in using their time. Researching, writing and rehearsing their speeches.

Discourage other work to be completed during this time as each presenter should be given the same opportunity to deliver their talk.

WHAT? Written analysis of speech WHY? To demonstrate your understanding of effective speech making skills and discuss how these features are effective. HOW? Watch short video and complete task as set on worksheet.

TASK NINE: PRESENTING SPEECHESStudents present speeches to peers. May take a few sessions to get through everyone.

TASK TEN: WRITTEN ANALYSISStudents watch a short speech and analyse by responding to questions. Can be completed as a timed task or by a due date.
