Wear Fall bright colors (reds, yellows, burgundy)
Dance to the great music of Andrea and the Mods
Ah, Fall, Autumn, Halloween, the start of Vagabond hikes and when hot chocolate starts to sound good again, when ghosts and goblins in kiddie sizes roam the streets to get goodies, and when Vagabonds continue to look for lots of fun – and get it – from their club. So come and kick off the month in grand style by wearing Fall colors and enjoying a great hot meal and hearing about fun things to do for the coming months at our October 7 General Meeting.
Special Food Choices: Pot Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Honey-Glazed Carrots, Dinner Roll, Coffee, $7.50 OR Roast Beef Sandwich, Chips, Pickle, Coffee, $4.50. Drink special: Spiked Apple Cider, $3.50
If your birthday is in October, we wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and will sing “Happy Birthday” to you at our meeting. We also ask those with birthdays this month to bring a treat to share – DESSERT ITEMS ONLY: cookies, cake, brownies. Having an estate or transition sale is not nearly like a rummage sale or garage sale. And when you need to have one because of moving or downsizing or becoming responsible to handle one for a deceased relative, it’s crucial to get help to take off the pressure, but also to make sure household items, furniture, appliances, artwork, jewelry, clothing, and so many other things garner the best values. A certain headache if you try to do it yourself, but fortunately one of our very own Vagabonds, Susan Perry, is an expert and a professional sale specialist, and she
can greatly ease things for you when you are possibly already under stress. Susan is head of Today’s Lifestyle Solutions, and she is going to tell us all about how to conduct a successful sale and what she does during that process. It requires a great deal of expertise to make sure that one is getting the real value of items before they’re thrown away or held onto when not warranted. Don’t miss this one. Questions? ron Sonntag, 414-788-4907, or [email protected]. Dinner will be served from 5 pm, so eat while listening.

Each event that our club offers is a gift to our members from wonderful, talented people who extend
themselves by sharing their time and talents. As our membership renewals keep flying in, it encourages those giving people to continue to come forward with new events. Sometimes I wonder why, or how, some of these marvelous “givers” keep giving ~ but they do, not only because of their nature, but also because of what they receive ~ a warm fuzzy feeling when they see others enjoying themselves. As members, all you’re asked to do is sign up and enjoy the many things these special people have planned for you. That giving-receiving cycle is what keeps our club going so well. So get and partake of the many offerings that are presented to you, including some of the following ones for October.
Our wonderful Sundays of Hiking in the Parks will resume; challenging Sunday Bowling continues; fantastic, over-the-top
Door County Weekend is once again presented; enjoy the beauty of our good earth with a tour of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center; multiple choices of Great Plays; hop, skip and jump to a real live Square Dance; leaving the driving to a bus driver, have fun and see and Tour Lambeau Field and Museum; and yes there’s even Pickleball that awaits you. Now I didn’t even mention the Saturday Morning Breakfasts, or Dominoes and Sheephead. Do you see all the givers – now be a “taker” and enjoy!
Looking ahead, don’t forget to sign up for one, two or three of your favorite ski trips. Secure your space early so that you can enjoy the lovely winters to the fullest!
Please, please, please don’t be afraid to sign up alone, I did and I have had fun ever since!!!

A aquestion that arises with greater frequency is when skiers ask if they can take advantage of some aspects of a Club trip, but not all. Specifically, this issue comes
up with ski trips to Colorado, where skiers either wish to drive out earlier or stay later, and not pay for airfare. This would not be much of an issue if our trips were priced based on individual components, but they are not. Prices for our trips are established well in advance of trip departures. We don’t know at that time how many skiers will sign up for individual trips, and we typically don’t know our airline costs until approximately 6 months before departure.
Airlines often offer a “free” airline seat based on the number of skiers flying that airline. When the trips are priced, we don’t know how many skiers will sign up, so we don’t account for the “free” airline seat. If we exceed the requisite number of fliers, that money is placed in the party fund, to the benefit of
everyone. (With some recent trips that have not filled, but have met the appropriate number of fliers, we have had to use the airline money to cover our expenses.)
When skiers elect not to fly with the Club, it can jeopardize the opportunity to get a “free” airline seat. Our practice has been that if we have a sufficient number of fliers, we will, on an individual basis, allow skiers to forego paying the airfare. They must, however, pay for the bus transportation to and from the airport, and any other expenses that the group pays.
Our February trip to Snowmass is unusual because there are no “free” airline seats. Consequently, we have more flexibility in allowing skiers to drive there. Our 2016 western trips involve flying to “close in” airports, a convenience that should not be missed.
SAFetY tIP: Do you think of your ski poles when you are skiing? Many beginners and lower intermediate skiers treat their ski poles as appendages that flop around on the way down the hill. Some skiers still use outdated “sabre” grips (possibly anticipating getting into a sword fight). Those of us who treat ski poles as a vital part of the skiing experience should ensure that they are not in a state of disrepair. Of particular concern is the area just above the ski pole basket. Is your metal thin in that area? You can immediately tell if the metal is weakening by the color: a silver color with streaks indicates that the skis got in the way of the poles once too often. To prevent surprises -- and to ensure safe skiing -- keep your poles in proper working order. If your poles show signs of deterioration, replace them.

Snowmass/Aspen, coloradoSaturday, February 20 – Saturday, February 27, 2016By popular request, we are returning to Snowmass/Aspen in 2016. If you can’t find enough skiing at Snowmass, with 3,332 acres of terrain, 94 trails, 21 chairlifts -- and access to your choice of cruisers, glades, and steeps -- you may choose to visit the nearby resorts of Aspen, Buttermilk, or Aspen Highlands. Snowmass is known as the best of all the mountains (averages 300 inches of snow each season) and is the second largest ski resort in Colorado. Beginner areas and green runs near the base of the mountain make learning easy, and there are many cruising runs, particularly in the Big Burn area.
Our home in Snowmass will be the Top of the Village Condos, a slope-side, truly ski-in/ski-out facility. We have 6 - 3 Bdm / 3 bath, and 1 - 2 Bdm/ 2 bath condos. The condos all have amenities
we have come to expect, including heated outdoor pool, fireplace, and private balcony. An on-call Village shuttle is available for grocery shopping, dinner, or just visiting the town where there are dozens of first-class restaurants and shops to enjoy.
