PRINCIPALS REPORT

Teacher Professional Development This has been a very busy term, not only have our teachers been involved in Professional Practice Days, they have or will be attending further Professional Development Days. A big part of these days is to support our Literacy, Numeracy and Well Being Programs across the school. All grades have run smoothly with the least amount of interruption to their daily routine of activities. Thank you to all students for their fantastic efforts in their grades.

National Day of Action against Bullying

On Friday 16th March, our school will participate in the National Day of Action against Bullying and Vio-lence (NDA). Your child will be participating in some fun and educational activities.

The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools and in 2018, schools are being asked to imagine a world free from bullying and share their BIG IDEAS.

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/nationalday

Bullying is defined as:

An ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.

https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/WhatIsBullying/DefinitionOfBullying

At Cardinia Primary School we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone.

Model Airfield A big thankyou to Sharon King for once again organising the catering at the Model Airfield over the weekend. It is appreciated by the school. We thank all helpers that were involved in this.

Evacuation Drill Last Thursday, the whole school participated in an evacuation drill practice as part of our Emergency Plan-ning preparation. This went very smoothly. Later in the year we will be conducting other drills, where we will not be announcing the time or date of such drills to fully assess our systems to ensure a safe evacuation of all persons on the school site when an emergency may take place.

Yakkerboo Once again, Cardinia Primary School will be entering a float in the Yakkerboo Parade on Sunday the 22nd of April. This year Miss Italia, Mrs Miller and Miss V.P. will be co-ordinating our entry around the theme, Zoo. The meeting last week was very successful. We have decided to work with the theme Jungle Safari. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to help.

Road Side Parking Just a reminder to all parents to be extra careful when opening and closing car doors while parked on Cardinia Road, especially if parked roadside on the eastern side of Ballarto Road where you may unintentionally obstruct oncoming traffic.

Mrs Trudie Esler (Acting Principal)

THUMBS UP

To Sharon King and her helpers for catering at the Model Airfield over the weekend.

To Indigenous Hip Hop Projects (IHHP) for a fantastic incursion yesterday.

To all the students for their enthusiasm and great dancing at yesterday’s

incursion.

To our many families that have brought in vouchers for the Coles ‘Sports for

FROM THE OFFICE

ABSENCES

If your child is absent from school parents must inform the school of this in writing. This can be done via a note, an email or completing the slip at the Office. Phone calls will be made if an absence has not been reported to the school on the day of the absence. A follow up note or email will still be required to explain the absence. SECOND-HAND UNIFORM

We have a surplus of second-hand uniforms at school. If you would like to have a look through the selection, please see our office staff. Items are $2/piece and can be paid in cash directly to the office. 2019 FOUNDATION ENROLMENTS

With the 2018 Preps settling in, it is time to start planning our 2019 intake! If you have a Pre-School child who will begin Foundation at Cardinia Primary School in 2019, could you please visit the office as soon as possible to ensure we have your child’s details? Please do not assume we know your child will be attending our school. With so many new families, it is a huge job to keep track of all possible future Preps. You will need to provide the office with your current email address as well as your Pre-School child’s full name, date of birth and the name of the Kindergarten she/he currently attends. A 2019 enrolment form will then be given to you and these are due back fully completed by the end of Term 1. Rest assured that all siblings of current students will be given a place for Foundation 2019. However, we do need your details to confirm your child’s place. Please see Trudie or Jodie if you have any questions regarding the 2018 Foundation Enrolment procedure. BOOK CLUB

Please have all orders and payments for Book Club back to the office by Friday, March 16th. COLES ‘SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS’ PROGRAM

Please keep the Coles ‘Sports for Schools’ program vouchers coming in. TISSUE BOXES

Every year we ask our school families to donate 2 boxes of tissues for students to use in their classrooms. This helps us immeasurably by keeping our school costs down each year. If you haven’t already donated, could each family please supply 2 boxes of tissues (can be any brand) and hand them into the office.

STUDENT MEDICATION

If you completed a Medication Request Form last year for your child/ren and wish to continue having medication kept at school the Department of Education and Training requires you to complete a new Medication Request Form. The Medication Request Form is available at the Office. Medication cannot be given to students without this form being completed. We are unable to give students medication that is past its expiry date so please come into the office and check if the medication we hold for your child is still within its expiry date. Medication to treat asthma or anaphylaxis does not need to be accompanied by a Medication Request Form provided we have an Asthma Care Plan or Action Plan for Anaphylaxis that has been completed by a medical practitioner.

INDIGENOUS HIP HOP PROJECTS (IHHP) INCURSION

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have IHHP visit our school promoting positivity through modern dance.

All students attended a whole school performance at 9:15am on the basketball court where 6 dancers performed. We had a special visit from KC, an Indigenous Michael Jackson impersonator, before all 6 dancers performed together. By the end they had the whole school up dancing and cheering!

Students were introduced to the IHHP motto "Strong Mind, Strong Body, Strong Spirit, Strong Culture" and what this means. Teachers are like the Personal Trainers of minds - without education and a strong mind it is hard to succeed. Students need to respect their bodies and keep themselves healthy and strong to be, and achieve, their best. Students need to have a strong spirit and not only know what is right from wrong, but conduct themselves in a positive way. Students need to connect to their cul-ture and understand other cultures in Australia; they should respect and be proud of the foundations of this great land.

This brought everybody in the school together and was one of the most positive educational experiences to witness.

Students then participated in a 1 hour workshop learning dance moves while the dancers reinforced values such as Respect for others, Respect for their own bodies and Respect for the Teachers who facilitate learning. Students were encouraged to try everything and to not be self-conscious, they were encouraged to stay at school and learn as much as possible, they were encouraged to be kind and were told they were all valued.

Although most of the dancing was HipHop, we also saw more traditional Indigenous dance moves to contemporary songs - the Foundation & Grade ones even tried some moves themselves!

Overall it was a fantastic day and I encourage you to discuss with your child/ren some of the messages that were received on the day.

For those students who are interested, the Indigenous musician whose song Marryuna (Let's Dance) you danced to was called Baker Boy - you may like to look him up!

Thanks to all parents for your support of this incursion - I am sure all students enjoyed the day - I know the staff thought it was fantastic.

GRADE 2 WRITING

Today 2I and 2B went to the hall. We did Hip Hop. My favorite bit was the free dance

and at the basketball court when the guy did a backflip. Ryan

In the Indigenous Hip Hop I learnt cool dances. My favorite dance is the scoop. I also

liked at the start of the day when Josh did ballet spins. Davey

On Tuesday the 13th

of March we went to the Indigenous Hip Hop incursion. I learnt

that Australia has the oldest culture. Six Aboriginal people were there. We did 4

dances. I was embarrassed to get up but in the end I got up and started clapping.

They also told us some amazing facts. After all of the fantastic dancing we had to go

back to class but at least we got to do it all again after recess. Lexi

I liked the Indigenous Hip Hop because I was dancing a lot. My favourite part was

when I got to free dance. Ashton

We learned about a lot about Australia about the Aboriginal culture. We also did

dancing and got a bit sweaty. Also, the Hip Hop people taught us some phenomenal

moves. Aiden

The whole school went to the basketball court. There were Hip Hop people and they

were great at dancing. I danced with them, they were doing cartwheels into

handstands! I felt great and excited, it was fun. Ruby

Today we did the Hip Hop excursion and I learnt some new dance moves. They were

pretty cool. My favourite one was Jessica. She was

the one who taught us the cool dance moves. Grace

Today 2B and 2I went to the public hall outside of

the school. It was brilliant, my

favourite part was when Josh did ballet moves.

Aaron

Today it was the Indigenous Hip Hop day. The

six teachers did backflips, front flips, the worm, the

wave and the robot and everyone cheered.

Flexible Booking Options Now Available at Camp Australia At Camp Australia, we understand how busy life can be, and we heard you when you said you needed more flexibility to

help with the ups and downs of everyday life. To support parents, we have introduced new Flexible Booking Options which

allow parents more Flexibility and choice over bookings.

When developing these options, we thought about how all parents using Outside School Hours Care have different needs,

so we have created three custom membership options designed to meet the needs of:

Parents with a predictable, regular schedule who are looking to reduce costs;

Parents who want peace of mind that they can make changes when they need to’

Parents who are happy with their current arrangement may receive no changes

In addition to new membership options, we have introduced a new Casual booking option through the Flex-e-Card(e-Card),

where you can pre-purchase ten casual sessions at a discounted Casual rate, and make bookings up to 2 hours prior to

sessions throughout the term.
