STUDENT REPORTS
Teachers are preparing Student Reports and
Student Portfolios for mid-year. The reports and
portfolios will come home on Thursday 20th
June.
You will receive an invitation to make an
appointment to meet with your child’s class
teacher during the week 24th
June. This is an
excellent opportunity to further discuss your
child’s achievements and ways to work in
partnership with the school to further his/her
progress.
PREP 2014 ENROLMENTS
It is that time of year when schools are preparing
for the following year and student numbers are
critical to the school’s staffing structure.
I would ask you to please complete the required
Student Admission Enrolment Form if you intend
enrolling your child at Burwood Heights Primary
School in 2014. This form is available from the
main office or on the school’s website. It can be
forwarded by mail if requested.
We would like to have this information by the end
of June if possible.
If you are aware of any families who may live
near you and have not enrolled, would you please
advise them of this timeline.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
CURRICULUM DAY PLANNED
Please put in your diary.
Our third Curriculum Day for 2013 will be held on
Friday 2nd
August. This early notice should assist
parents in arranging care for their child/children if
required.

high school.
GARDEN VIEWS
Hello......I left off last week at the forest
coupe. Prior to leaving, some of us sat around a
smoking fire eating lunch while others watched a
truck being loaded, some lads found brass rifle
casings on the ground and happily collected them.
Running low on time we rushed off, stopping at a
recently burned and reseeded sight, then off, to
Hugh Kelly's sawmill. Pat his son and Hugh were
most welcoming. Timber was stacked everywhere,
air drying for 12 months. A huge log was loaded
onto a sliding carriage in front of two giant turning
blades, one above, one below. Pressing buttons
and moving a lever Hugh, who had been a miller
all his life, cut the log into long slices which rolled
forwards onto a moving belt. We watched in awe,
smelled the smells and heard the piercing sounds.
Some students were guided in the use of a
small cutting blade so they could make and take
home a wee garden stake. Rushing, we thanked
and said good bye to these two generous, kindly
folk. We were already late and worrying, well Mr
Rhyder was.
Bowerbird, a pioneering venture, created
by Tim, was our next port of call. Tim believes
that normal forestry is too wasteful and so he
sources his wood from suburban backyards, a
insight that awoke in him when he worked as a
tree surgeon. He makes one off furniture items
with a craftsman’s eye and deep affection for
wood. He began asking the students questions and
then showed us his “think” room where he
ponders design and seeks inspiration. We handled
his collection of wood, beautifully carved by
insects and termites, a 35,000 year old piece of
wood from a peat bog, pieces of petrified wood.
He showed us a lump of ordinary firewood and
then how that same wood looked when cut, sanded
and oiled, so beautiful. Another utterance of wow
was heard. He pointed out the texture, the grain of
cold climate timber, explained the inner seasonal
workings of a tree, the growth rings, hard and soft
woods.
He stirred the sleeping artisan in the
students when explaining how one can just see
rubbish...wood waste or look again to see
possibility and beauty. The smell of the citrus
based oil was seductive. He does not use any toxic
glues and lacquers. Embarrassed, Mr Rhyder and I
had to tear the group away from this enchanting
spot, we were by now, ¾ hour behind
schedule...oh dear. Tim generously invited us
back.
So here was a whole 3D picture of one of
life's realities. Students saw, heard, smelled and
touched reality, witnessing how 80 year old trees
are cut, graded, debarked, loaded into huge trucks
by real, unique humans, how they arrive at mills,
are cut to various sizes, prepared for papermaking,
housing, furniture and then how someone can
pioneer a new insight and with artistic eye add
another uplifting dimension to the impressive
contribution that others in the timber industry
already make to human comfort and welfare.
These coupe tours are now open to any interested
small group. Ask Chris Rhyder or myself for
details.
Regards Peter Le Ray

KITCHEN NOTES
Level Four students have been
making, rolling and cutting pasta this
term and have become quite the
experts! They have created fettuccine,
spaghetti, ravioli, trofie and this week….
Rag pasta. Rag pasta is rolled through the
pasta machine, but cut into strips or
shapes by hand, giving it a rustic
appearance and texture. This suited our
heavier, meat based sauce this week.
Remember, this week’s recipe and all
others we’ve cooked this year can be found
on the school website
Italian sausage ragu with rag pasta
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large brown onion, finely
chopped
2 anchovies in oil, drained,
chopped (optional)
2 garlic cloves, crushed
600g Italian pork and fennel
sausages
1/2 cup dry white wine
2 x 400g cans diced tomatoes
375g packet fresh lasagne
sheets
Shaved parmesan and fresh
basil leaves, to serve
What to do
1. Heat oil in a large frying pan over
medium heat. Add onion. Cook,
stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes
or until softened. Add anchovies, if
using, and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 1
minute or until fragrant. Squeeze
sausages from casings. Discard
casings. Add sausage mixture to pan.
Cook, stirring, for 10 minutes or until
browned. Add wine.
2. Bring to the boil. Cook for 2 to 3
minutes or until reduced by half.
3. Add tomato to pan. Bring to the boil.
Reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10
to 15 minutes or until slightly
thickened.
4. Meanwhile, tear lasagne sheets into
long strips. Cook pasta in a saucepan
of boiling, salted water, for 3 to 4
minutes or until tender. Drain.
Return to pan.
5. Add sauce to pasta. Season with salt
and pepper. Toss to combine. Serve
topped with parmesan and basil.

After School Care Program
Program Update 13.06. 2013
Hi Everyone!
I hope you had a fantastic long weekend! Mine was busy but fun and went far too
quickly. Like I said last week, we don't have long until the June-July school holidays (12 school
days to go in fact!) So now is the time to start thinking about the school holiday program and
booking in for a fun filled two weeks.
Orchard Grove has a fantastic looking holiday program coming up, some of the activities include:
an excursion to the movies, an excursion to the Ultimate Play Centre, Mini Master Chef and
Christmas in July. That's only just some of the days, there's too many fun sounding activities to
list. I know I'll be there for a couple of days during the school holidays, so it would be great to see
some familiar faces.
Have a great week!
