The national apology has sent an important message to victims and survivors that we hear you and we see you. It speaks volumes to say that, as a nation, we are deeply sorry for the fear, intimidation, abuse and violence experienced by so many, and the lifelong impact this has had. Victims and survivors suffered abuse in a range of institutional settings, including in schools across all education sectors, where they were meant to be safe from harm, where they should have led happy and healthy lives. At the Department of Education and Training, keeping children and young people safe and protected while they are in the care of our early childhood centres, schools and higher education services is of paramount importance. The Department is working with the whole of the Victorian government to implement recommendations from the royal commission. This will build on the work already done to introduce the Child Safe Standards, a reportable conduct scheme, and landmark child information sharing legislation. A National Redress Scheme is available to people who have experienced child sexual abuse in government institutions. Through the scheme people can apply for support and access to counselling, a monetary redress payment, and a personal apology and direct personal response from the responsible institution.

REMINDERS

We welcomed our 2019 Prep students on 26th October and the second Transition Programme will be held tomorrow, with the third on 9th November and the final session, 16th November.

A Prep 2019 Information Night will be held on Tuesday, 13th November 2018.

Junior Sports Day is always a fun-filled time for our Junior School students and their parents and on 20th November we are planning to keep up the tradition of having fun whilst participating in sporting activities. More information to follow later.

The Dance and Glee Concert is a “not-to-be-missed” event on 5th December. To see our students perform at the level they do is extremely moving. Not only will our students be performing but also our Parent Dance Group!

Seven weeks until Christmas!

WHITEHORSE SPRING FESTIVAL

The sun was shining, a gentle breeze was blowing and the families had gathered in front of the stage. Then the entertainment commenced and what a treat it was. The Sapphire, Diamond, Star, Crystal and Sparkle Dance Troupes; and all three Glee Clubs earned the resounding applause they received for their talented display of dance and singing.

What a privilege it was for all who witnessed the talent and enthusiasm of our young performers and shared this community time together.

A special thank you to Mrs Whiteoak, Mr Miet, Ms Redlich, Ms King, Ms Lethbridge, Mrs Ramsay, Mrs Millen, Mrs van der Lugt, and Miss Whitelaw for either teaching the students or supervising on the day.

MARKET STALLS PREPARED AND OPERATED BY SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS - AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS.

Our Senior School students undertook a fundraising project recently to raise funds for “our” school in

Gupta, Nepal. No one could have possibly anticipated the results. Students planned their project in

groups, conscientiously implemented and executed their plans. The E,Wood Centre was abuzz with

excitement and activity, as all classes had the opportunity to purchase goods from the many stalls in

place. From the sale of books, to cakes, ice cream, biscuits, guessing games, purchasing tickets for a

Talent Show and much more, the excitement was palpable, as stall owners advertised their wares and

bargained with prospective customers. Their record keeping of sales was exemplary. The amount

raised (still finishing off the Talent Quest) will be close to a staggering $2,000.00. This will purchase

many resources for the children of Gupta.

It was indeed a more than outstanding project by our Senior School team – staff and students.

I congratulate all the Senior School students and the staff who had guided and supported the students

in this “real life” enterprise from inception to completion.

Chesterfield

Farm

In Prep we are learning about Animal features and what they need to

survive. We went on a very exciting excursion to Chesterfield Farm and

learnt all about different animals. The Farmers took us on a bumpy trac-

tor ride, helped us feed some animals and let us explore animal products

in the Discovery Centre. We really enjoyed the Sheep Herding Show

and watching the farmer sheer a sheep. We all had a turn at milking a

cow and learnt about the products that are made from milk. We had lots

of fun learning about the different animals and their special feature that

help them survive.

Wow! I was so excited because on Wednesday the 24th of October it was the day that I always wanted, today, I could explore the farm! I fed the horses and I milked the cow. My favourite thing was feeding the animals. I learnt about milk products which are ice-cream, chocolate, cheese, yoghurt and cream. We went to the Show Barn to watch the sheep herding show. We went on a tractor ride, to the animal nursery and learnt lots of interesting things at the Discovery Centre. I pat the sheep and they were so fluffy. My favourite animal was the cow because I got to milk it. When I was milking the cow it was fun. I didn’t squeeze too hard because I didn’t want to hurt the cow, the farmer helped me. I saw the goats and I fed them. We had our snack and lunch in a party room. Ches-terfield Farm is my favourite place because all of the animals were so cute. We went

back to school on the bus. I had lots and lots of fun, I love Chesterfield Farm.

Senior School Fundraising This semester, the Senior School has partnered with the United World

Schools, as part of their Global Citizenship Badge Programme. In small

groups, the students have been running a series of fundraising events, in

an effort to reach their fundraising target of $1000 USD.

On Monday 22nd October, the whole was invited to participate in the

Market Day Stalls, where they were able to play games, buy second

hand books and a wide selection of delicious treats. Other fundraising

events have included a Talent Show, Film Viewing and Disco.

The students are very proud to have smashed their target and have far

exceeded all expectations. All funds raised will go towards helping disad-

vantaged children gain an education in Gufa Village, Nepal.

English in the Middle

School! We have been up to some exciting things in English in

the Middle School! This term our focus for Reading and

Viewing is the ‘Born Free’ animal books. The four books

we are focusing on include, ‘The Elephant Truck’,

‘Journey to Freedom’, ‘Back to the Blue’ and ‘The Wolf

Watchers’. The theme within these books is animal

conservation and how we can save them. Students are

completing weekly comprehension activities about each

book. This ties in wonderfully with our latest Inquiry

Unit on Endangered Animals.

Spotlight On…

1/2W! 1/2W have been focusing on the

structure of Narratives. We

looked at the characters, setting,

problems and solutions and the

various structures needed for

each part of a story. Students

have concentrated on various

things such as, ‘Sizzling Starts’,

‘Talking Marks’, ‘Punctuation’

and using other words instead of

‘said’, in their writing. Students

planed, wrote, and finally

published their very own, ‘Picture

Story Book’. Enjoy reading our

stories!
