Dear Hall of Fame Inductee,

With over two-thirds of our students participating in one or more seasons of athletics, it is clear that sports are a vital component in the educational experiences of students and the culture of Algonquin. The Hall of Fame enhances the traditions of our school and acknowledges those individuals who have played a significant role in establishing those values we hold as important. As you are about to be inducted into the Algonquin Athletics Hall of Fame, you will take your deserved place among those who have achieved remarkable athletic success while setting an inspiring example of dedication, perseverance, and sportsmanship.Congratulations.

Karrah Ellis, CAA Director of Athletics

Dear Hall of Fame Inductees:

Class of 2013, congratulations on your induction into the Algonquin Regional High School Athletic Hall of Fame! Because of your outstanding athletic contributions to, support for, and representation of Algonquin athletics, you will be joining a very prestigious group of Tomahawks! The induction ceremony exemplifies the proud history of Algonquin. We are inducting student-athletes who performed at the highest possible level in their respective sports including: track and field, football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, cross country, tennis, lacrosse, and baseball. We are also honoring an individual who has been helping out on the sidelines at countless Algonquin sporting events since 1976.As the great John Wooden once said, “We don’t have to be superstars or win championships…. All we have to do is learn to rise to every occasion, give our best effort, and make those around us better as we do it.” Thank you to all of our inductees for your love of sports, your best effort, and your ability to make those around you better: that is what makes you true champions!I would especially like to thank our Hall of Fame Committee Chair, Kevin Merchant, a 2001 Algonquin Hall of Fame Inductee, for his tireless efforts and commitment to ensure that this a memorable event. I would be remiss if I did not offer a special thank you to Susan Baburins. This day would not be possible without her hard work, meticulous attention to detail, and dedication to Algonquin’s Athletic Department.

With Pride and Respect,

Karrah B. EllisDirector of Athletics

Before I entered high school a close family friend told me, “Some of your greatest memories will be from high school.” At the time, I didn’t realize the magnitude of those words, but I certainly do now. I “found myself” at ARHS. I had many great teachers who pushed me academically. I made friends—friends with whom I am still close to today. Track gave me confidence and taught me that many things are achievable if I worked hard enough. The many positive experiences, coupled with encouragement from my teachers, Lisa Danielson, and Ken Peterson (my coaches), Athletic Director Fran Whitten, and my family are why I chose to go into the field of education myself. I hope to make a difference in the lives of young, eager students and athletes—much like the community of people did for me at ARHS. Looking back I can say that some of my greatest memories are from high school and that many of those experiences helped me become the person I am today.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My experience during my time at Algonquin set the foundation for what has been a largely successful and happy life thus far. Upon entry into Algonquin as a freshman, I encountered a range of emotions-what many incoming freshmen go through; including excitement, fear, and anxiety. What differentiated me from many other freshmen is that I had just recently moved to Southborough from Framingham and did not have many friends going into high school with me. This was tough because I was already a shy person and had to struggle to make new friends.

Algonquin presented an environment that made that seemingly impossible transition achievable, aided by my participation in the newly formed lacrosse program. I found my spot early in the lacrosse program and it set the foundation for what would define me as a person. The coaches, the players, and all the supporting cast helped make it a life-changing experience. It gave me the confidence necessary to grow as a person. In addition to what I gained from being on the lacrosse team, Algonquin-as a community of selfless faculty, staff, and outstanding community members-set a standard of learning and living that I might not have seen elsewhere.

The best perspective is often in hindsight so although I-and many others-might not have appreciated what Algonquin offered while in high school, I now know it was a priceless experience for which I am truly grateful.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Attending Algonquin has been a tremendously rich part of my life. I have deep friendships from high school that continue today. The school gave me an incredible academic preparation for college and medical school and beyond—along with great friends and wonderful memories. The sports programs taught me valuable lessons that I apply every day in my life and in my work as a doctor. With great Algonquin pride, I still follow the ups and downs of Algonquin athletics. When I played at Algonquin I became aware that I would have to stop playing organized sports at some point in my life. Moreover, I learned that fitness would be a life-long pursuit and not just for my high school years. Finally, I always knew that my Algonquin coaches were correct in assuming that I would not be a professional athlete. However, my coaches and the athletic experiences at Algonquin helped me to develop an appreciation for athletics and sports that helps in my work as a physician for the New England Patriots and the Boston Bruins.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

I was fortunate in my high school career to be coaches by three Hall of Fame members: Paul Cronin (soccer), Phil Philip (basketball), and the most influential coach of my career, Jim Diamantopoulos (soccer and basketball). My coaches told me that I was just the type of player they loved to have on their teams. What they didn’t know, perhaps, is how much I loved to be coached.

Those men helped shape my life. They taught me what it meant to be successful, showing me the connection between hard work and high rewards. I apply those lessons every day of my life. Each day I start on the “end-line” (as coach

Diamantopoulos used to say) and run as hard as I can. “You don’t want to be last,” he always shouted as we began our wind sprints.

The greatest gift that Algonquin gave me was the opportunity to meet and befriend some outstanding people. I was blessed to be surrounded by a great group of kids in high school athletics. To this day I am pleased to consider those teammates my closest friends. I know you know who you are.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

I moved from overseas and entered Algonquin in the tenth grade. Being able to participate in sports right away gave me the opportunity to meet and be friendly with a many more people than I would have otherwise had a chance to meet—giving me a measure of respectability in a shorter time. I enjoyed my relationships with the faculty members who served as coaches. The success I attained in tennis and cross-country as well as academics helped set the stage for a fruitful college career. The love of sports and physical fitness continues in my adult life.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

My years at Algonquin Regional High School were the best four years of my life. I learned many life-long lessons that I practice every day. Algonquin teachers and coaches instilled in me the core values that enable me to meet many challenges: teamwork, loyalty, respect for others, respect for diversity, an appreciation for education, among them. Coming from a large family, and as the oldest of seven children, I learned early from my father and my mother—Jim and Kay Gunning to respect others, try hard, and always do my best. I was very lucky to grow up in the same neighborhood as the Henningson, Conti, McCarthy, and Turner families and today call all of them my best friends. I thank my wife Trudy—the “love of my life,” for all her love and support. We were all “old school.” We worked and played hard and were taught by our parents to do the right thing. That was reinforced by the educators at Algonquin. On our track teams we learned to encourage and root for our teammates—win or lose. When we lost we learned to hold our heads high and to congratulate the winners. Coach Bill O’Connor preached those concepts daily. I was also lucky to have other outstanding teachers and mentors: coaches like Joe Cummings, Paul Cronin, Dutch Holland, Jack Wallace, Frank Kronoff, John Brouillard, and Dick Walsh; and teachers like Neil Cronin, Arthur Murdock, Fred Philcox, Luke Foley, Regina Swoope, Charlie Lindberg, Carol LeBlanc, Sue Renfrew, Jeff Eaton, and many more. They went out of their way on their own time to work with me and others to make us successful—giving Algonquin students an advantage later in life. They have inspired me to pass along the values they taught to me to my daughters, nieces and nephews (and many other young people I have encountered in my life). It’s very important to support, recognize, and let our kids know we support them. It’s truly an honor to be inducted into the Algonquin Athletic Hall of Fame. I share this award and honor with all my family, great friends (who are really my extended family), and all my teammates and coaches over

Has provided student-interns to work with Algonquin’s athletic trainer (also at no costto the school)

He was also a long-time member of the Algonquin School Council

PERSONAL STATEMENT

In 1981 I opened a physical therapy practice in Northborough. Well before that, in 1976, I started attending Algonquin sporting events. Sports have been a large part of my high school and adult life. When attending Algonquin games, I noticed that the coaches sometimes needed assistance with sports injuries. Soon, the coaches asked me to work with the injured athletes. I’m still here.

The Algonquin community has been a special experience in my life. It will be in my heart forever. The student-athletes are kind, understanding, and intelligent. I have grown as a person and as a professional physical therapist because of the association with Algonquin’s student-athletes.

The award adds even more to my Algonquin experience because I will be joining my daughter Hilaré (Hardy) Bowie (inducted in 2003 as part of the 1994 championship state gymnastics team) on the “wall”.Thanks Algonquin. I’ll be forever grateful.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Some of my favorite memories are those that I have accumulated from my years as an Algonquin High School student. I still cherish the times I had with friends, teammates, coaches, and teachers. Those times are the ones that have helped me become the person I am today. Being a graduate from a top-ranked high school is a rewarding accomplishment, but being a graduate and a successful two-sport athlete at a top ranked high school is something I will always look upon with pride. I owe a lot to all those with whom I developed a relationship in high school. My teachers taught me the importance of being a student first. My basketball and soccer coaches taught me that hard work will pay off eventually if one is disciplined enough. My teammates allowed me to see the importance of trust and of dedication to not only the sport but to each other. I am honored to see my name listed on the 1,000-point banner in the school gymnasium, but I owe all of that to my teammates and my coaches. I could not have achieved my success without them. The feeling of playing a sport that I loved with some of my best friends by my side (and, in my case, family members as well) is indescribable. I am privileged to have been part of such an amazing community, and those years will be in my heart and memories forever.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Attending Algonquin was a turning point in my life. Prior to Algonquin I lacked many of the skills necessary to be happy and successful in life. I was also a little on the wild side. Algonquin reeled me in and gave me the opportunity, guidance, and the confidence to become successful in my endeavors. I never imagined that I would have so many successes and victories at Algonquin, but I truly have to say that my greatest victory was the honor of working with coaches Bill O’Connor, Joe Cummings, John Brouillard, and Pat Mooney. Every time I take pm a new challenge, I am grateful for the skills they gave me to succeed and enjoy the process.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

In my junior year of high school in 1959, Algonquin Regional High School opened—forming the long-awaited merger of Northborough and Southborough High Schools, with improved academic, athletic, and artistic opportunities. For me, my Algonquin experience has great meaning. The new curriculum increased our course selections and elevated our chances to explore new academic and athletic pursuits. Algonquin expanded our frontiers and provided the inspiration to take on new challenges not offered at the Northborough or Southborough High Schools. In addition to improving our educational experiences, former rivals became friends and many friendships have been life-long. I played sports. I served as senior class president, class of 1961.

I went on to earn degrees from college and graduate school and served 5 years as an officer in the United States Army. After the army, I spent 35 years working in school administration—in Sudbury, Massachusetts, and at Brown University in Rhode Island. I still live in Southborough, married to the former Sheila Maguire, a wonderful women and a Southborough native. We have two children. I have

maintained a life-long attachment to Algonquin and appreciate all opportunities it provided to me.
