Weber/Morgan Area Agency
National Senior Independence Month
February is the month known for celebrating Valentine’s Day and commemorating Black Histo-
ry. But what you might not know is that February is also National Senior Independence Month.
During December 2019, Weber-Morgan Area Agency on Aging completed an outcome survey of
70 senior clients who receive case management services, which arranges various services
(housekeeping, transportation, medication management, etc.) to support their remaining in
their homes or apartments rather than moving to care facilities or assisted livings. All of the 70
clients responded that they strongly prefer to stay in their own living setting rather than in facil-
ities that may be safer and more convenient for clients with health problems. We all love to live
as independently as we can.
Keys for Maintaining Our Independence
This is a time for all of us to focus on how to stay happy, healthy, and independent for as long as
possible. As the director of Weber-Morgan Area Agency on Aging, which operates various ser-
vices at 11 senior centers, I would like to make suggestions for small improvements to your life-
style and those of others around you, as well as some great resources.
Exercise Your Body:
Starting or continuing physical exercise is an important part of keeping your independence.
However, going to the gym is not the only way to exercise. Some group or low-impact exercises
can be good for us, including yoga, tai chi, Zumba, line dancing, or arthritis fitness. Check this
senior center newsletter for scheduling.
Stay Social:
Loneliness increases the risk of health decline. Stay in touch with friends and neighbors. Why
not attend senior center meals and other recreation activities?
Exercise Your Mind:
It is not all about physical activities. How about developing lifelong artfulness for your mind?
Check out your closest senior center’s art classes, such as ceramics, oil paintings, quilting, acryl-
ics, jewelry making, stained glass, etc.
Participating in Evidence-Based Health Education Classes:
Weber-Morgan Area Agency on Aging offers six weekly sessions to
help with pain management, diabetes management, and other
chronic conditions. Ask our
preventive health coordinator, Caitlin McElrath, M.A. at
801-625-3775 for upcoming classes.
