A Word from our President….

In this part, we will be listening to our president, Mr. Lyndon Johnson, speak at the University of Michigan the Gulf of Tonkin accident, which occurred on August 4, 1964.

As President and Commander in Chief, it is my duty you to report that new hostile actions against US ships on the seas in the Gulf of Tonkin have today required me to order the military forces of the United States to take action .The first attack on the 'Maddox, on August 2, was repeated today by vessels attacking two U.S. destroyers with torpedoes. The destroyers and supporting aircraft acted at once on the orders I gave. We believe at least two of the boats were sunk. There were no U.S. losses. Repeated acts of violence against the Armed Forces of the United States must be met with alert defense and positive reply. That reply is being given as I speak to you tonight. Air action is now in progress against gunboats and supporting facilities in North Viet-Nam which have been used.Aggression by terror against the peaceful villagers of South Viet-Nam has now been joined by open aggression on the seas against the US.Yet our response, for the present, will be limited and fitting. We Americans know, although others appear to forget, the risks of spreading conflict. We still seek no wider war. I have instructed the Secretary of State to make this position clear to all. I have instructed Ambassador Stevenson to raise this matter immediately and urgently before the Security Council of the United Nations. I have assurance by these leaders that a resolution will be introduced. I was able to reach Senator Goldwater and he has expressed his support of the statement that I am making.

“Well, in my perspective, everything is topsy turvy. My folks don’t have much money, because the times are hard. My parents don’t really mind what I do, ever. My real family is a gang of boys I hang out with. We’re not a real gang, just a bunch of boys who will stick together through thick and thin. Though Dally is the one I respect the most, me and a boy named Ponyboy get along real savvy. Anyway, I’m really scared these days because of a social group called the Socs. All they do is pick on us greasers for kicks, and many people can get hurt. But it’s not just the Socs I’m scared of. I really don’t know when Vietnam is going to end, but if I come of age, I don’t want to get drafted. Maybe that’s being selfish, I not wanting to fight for my country, but I don’t. What has this country ever done for me anyway? I think I’m going to talk more about the gang. We include Darry, Sodapop, Dally, Two-Bit, Steve, Ponyboy and I. Ponyboy is the only one out of the gang I would consider a real close friend. He and I get along real well, we’re both quiet, and we both smoke. I guess that’s all we really have in common, but we’re good friends anyway. Darry and Sodapop are Pony boy’s older brothers. Darry had to drop out of college to support his two brothers, and Soda dropped out to work in the gas station. Pony’s really the only one left in school, but he’s really smart. I don’t know Steve too well, but I know he and Soda are close buddies. Two-Bit got his name for what it stands for- he always got in his two bit of information on every topic. Last, but certainly not least, Dally. Dally lived in New York before he came here, where he lived in the streets and among real gangs, the ones that killed people. He got in jail a few times, which hardened him real well. Yet for the strangest reason, I find myself looking up to that man. I love to read. Although I can’t afford many books, I read very often. I’ll read old newspapers, talking about Mr. President and his fancy speeches, and I find them really interesting. I always had a thing for politics. It relaxes me, and when you’re my age in my time, you will do

A Word from the

Reporter..

Something I think that is important is the Vietnam War. Young boys of age are being drafted, boys with futures and careers not involving this horrible war. Not only is it affecting our youth, but it is affecting our economy. People are getting cut from their jobs, their only passageway to putting food on the table. When people get cut, whole families are affected forever. It affects education. For example, I have heard stories of young boys, young as fifteen, dropping out to help support their struggling family. People are scared. Some are fighting for peace, holding rallies, and handing out propaganda for their cause. Our country is in rambles. When kids are scared they turn to drugs. Many already have. I’m telling you the honest truth when I say, there may be not stopping them. This time has wrought havoc on everyone, and something tells me this war can drag on forever, making everyone miserable. There are groups of people who are convinced we are receiving the apocalypse due to us angering God. I’m not sure I believe that, but we must have done something really wrong to have to deserve this. Take the reading from page 8. Johnny is one of the kids I’ve talked so much about in this article. He even admits he is scared of being drafted into this scarring war. Families have members ripped away from either being drafted, or being killed in the Vietnam War. My closing point is, this war is serious. Don’t be stupid. We can get through this if we wait it out.
