Types of sentences

1) Simple sentence :

A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought. It has only one piece of information

Examples of simple sentences include the following:

1. Hamad waited for the train."Hamad" = subject, "waited" = verb

2. The train was late."The train" = subject, "was" = verb

3. Ali and Ahmad took the bus." Ali and Ahmad " = compound subject, "took" = verb

4. I looked for Ali and Ahmad at the bus station."I" = subject, "looked" = verb

5. Ali and Ahmad arrived at the bus station early but waited until noon for the bus." Ali and Ahmad " = compound subject, "arrived" and "waited" = compound verb

2) Compound sentence :

A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses (or complete sentences) connected to one another with a coordinating conjunction. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you think of the words "FAN BOYS":

Examples of compound sentences include the following:

1. Hamad waited for the bus, but the bus was late.2. I looked for Ali and Ahmad at the bus station, but they arrived

at the station before noon and left on the bus before I arrived.3. Ali and Ahmad arrived at the bus station before noon, and they

left on the bus before I arrived.4. Ali and Ahmad left on the bus before I arrived, so I did not see

3) Complex sentence :

A complex sentence is made up of an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses connected to it. A dependent clause is similar to an independent clause, or complete sentence, but it lacks one of the elements that would make it a complete sentence.

Examples of dependent clauses include the following:

because Ali and Ahmad arrived at the bus station before noon while he waited at the train station after they left on the bus

Dependent clauses such as those above cannot stand alone as a sentence, but they can be added to an independent clause to form a complex sentence.

Dependent clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions. Below are some of the most common subordinating conjunctions:

after although as because before even though if since though unless until when whenever whereas wherever while

A complex sentence joins an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses.

The dependent clauses can go first in the sentence, followed by the independent clause, as in the following:

Tip: When the dependent clause comes first, a comma should be used to separate the two clauses.

1. Because Ali and Ahmad arrived at the bus station before noon, I did not see them at the station.

2. While he waited at the train station, Hamad realized that the train was late.

3. After they left on the bus, Ali and Ahmad realized that Joe was waiting at the train station.

Conversely, the independent clauses can go first in the sentence, followed by the dependent clause, as in the following:

Tip: When the independent clause comes first, a comma should not be used to separate the two clauses.

1. I did not see them at the station because Ali and Ahmad arrived at the bus station before noon.

2. Hamad realized that the train was late while he waited at the train station.

3. Ali and Ahmad realized that Hamad was waiting at the train station after they left on the bus.

Writing a letter of advice

Dear Anood,

I hope that this letter finds you well! You will be graduating next June and I wanted to give you some advice to help you succeed this year.

First of all, you need to take care of your health. If you are ill and miss lessons, it will be much harder to catch up. So, get lots of sleep and go to bed early. Always eat breakfast and pack a healthy lunch. It is important to stay healthy, both for the brain and the body to work.

Next, you need to plan your time carefully. Sometimes it is difficult to balance schoolwork and free time. Give yourself at least two hours each night to study and revise lessons.

In addition, you must think about your career and the future. Write down your strengths and weaknesses. You can even start working on your curriculum vitae. Don’t forget to include your hobbies, for example, the books or sports you like. Remember to write about your education.

Finally, take time to enjoy yourself. Be sure to take pictures to remember this year. There will be special memories you may want to share with your own children in the future.

I hope that you have a wonderful year. Stay healthy and organize your time and you will do well. Good luck with your university applications!

Dear Hind,

How are you, my sweet little sister? I am thinking of you a lot at the moment because you are studying so hard! Are you busy at school? Are you enjoying your time with your friends? When I see the beautiful photos of our family trips to the desert on Instagram, I miss you all. I hope you are studying daily and thinking about your career options. I am sure you are. Now that I am at university, I would like to give you some advice about Grade 12.

First, I suggest you use your time wisely because the time in high school seems to go by very fast. You must believe in yourself and realise that every day in class is important. Listen to your teachers and write lesson notes in your workbook. You will develop confidence when you can read your notes back and understand them. Remember that each lesson has information you may need for your career! Assignments and homework in Grade 12 are difficult but with preparation you will be able to complete them. Your confidence will grow when you do well and this is important for a career! Try to do all of your assignments… even the hard ones.

Second, be organised and keep trying to improve one thing each day. When I was in high school, I faced many challenges. I have something to tell you. Sometimes, when we had so much homework, I felt like giving up! Our family helped me, and I am helping you, too. Do your best! Remember! If you don’t study hard now, you may regret it

later. If you are a hard worker you will get the benefits. The U.A.E. needs all of us to build a bright future.

Thirdly, jobs are very hard to get nowadays. Your interests, hobbies, and education are all important when you are writing up your Curriculum Vitae. So, please never forget your dreams and make small changes every day to achieve your future goals.

Finally, I would like to share a thought with you. In my heart, I hope you will apply to my university here in Abu Dhabi. It would be fantastic if we could study together. We could support each other in our different subjects. Hearing your laughter will be like music to my ears! I hope to come back home for Ramadan, Insha Allah.
