The GOOD NEWS GAZETTE December 2019 ‘Peace, Joy, Hope And Love, Through OUR savior, Jesus Christ!’ From the Pastor's Desk Pastor Bob Weidmayer There are a lot of holiday celebrations during this time of year. At those celebrations we often see the best dishes and stemware brought out. I remember as a child using mom's beautiful wine glasses as we celebrated. I always wondered what the adults had in their glasses. You see, we had grape juice or 7-UP and they had wine! Does it matter what's in your glass as you celebrate? The angel Gabriel visited a young mother to be, named Mary. Mary was told that she would conceive and bear a son. He would be the Savior of all the world! How blessed was Mary to be chosen as the one to carry, feed, nourish, raise this awesome gift of God! What an awesome blessing and awesome responsibility. We know the events, we've heard them so many times. "I am the Lord's servant", "may it happen to me as you have said!" The Holy Spirit dwelt within her causing to conceive and she indeed bore a Son, Jesus, the Christ,. Imagine what might of happened if she had said, I don't want that! I'm not going to be a vessel for that! As special as Mary was, and still is today we have that same joy and responsibility. That same Holy Spirit dwells within us. In our Baptism, God washed away our sin, and the Holy Spirit entered us, causing faith and new life to spring up and grow. We too have the privilege of saying with Mary, "I am the Lord's servant". We do have the ability to choose what's in our vessels. Will it be bitterness and sorrow? Will it be envy or jealousy? Will it be anger and resentment? Perhaps, like Mary we will simply say to our loving God, "Fill it up." Yes, indeed, fill me up with Your Son, Jesus. Fill me with love, joy,

‘Peace, Joy, Hope And Love, Through OUR savior, Jesus Christ!’

From the Pastor's DeskPastor Bob Weidmayer

There are a lot of holiday celebrations during this time of year.

Fill me with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control. Yes, Lord, may it be to me as You have said. I am Your servant, Your vessel!

What will you put in your cup this holiday season?

“I am the Lord's servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.”And the angel left her. Luke 1:38

What a busy month for both classes! Our 3's have been talking about giving thanks for family, friends and food. They prepared soup, muffins and dessert for our Thanksgiving Feast, which they enjoyed with their parents and/or grandparents.

Our 4/Multiage class learned about dinosaurs and created some beautiful murals. They also made family trees and collages, while at the same time working on letters, numbers, and other academic activities. All this, and they still found time to create several dishes to serve their parents/grandparents at their Thanksgiving Feast.

Speaking of being thankful...we are so blessed with wonderful preschool families who volunteer to help out when needed and support their children by enthusiastically participating in special preschool events. Thank you so much!

The month of December is packed with special activities. We are looking forward to a meaningful holiday season as we prepare to celebrate the birthday of Jesus!

If you are interested in learning more about our Preschool or would like a personalized tour, please email me at [email protected] or call/text me at (585)298-1547. Thank You!

President’s MessageHoward Barnes

From our family to yours, both here and abroad, we at St. Johns wish you a very happy and healthy Christmas season!

As we enter Advent and Christmas, take time to remember the reason for the season. That God sent his only son to walk among us, to eventually die for our sins.

This is one of two times during the year where Christians without home churches will look to find a church. So, ask and seek out families you can invite to service!

Reminder: our service schedule is a bit different this year, so please read on!

God Bless,

Howie

Endowment NotesDuring services on December 1st, we will officially vote on the bylaw amendment.

3 notes on it from the Voters Meeting:

1.   The endowment will provide some long-range stability and will grow our funds at a quicker rate than the bank.

2.   The endowment will allow us to accept real property, allow the church to be named as an insurance beneficiary, in a trust or in other planned giving.

3.   It will allow St. Johns to use and execute memorial funds in a more efficient way. Gifts can be completed faster and smaller gifts become more meaningful.

Super Sunday is coming!

During the month of December, we are going to collect information regarding members of the church family who have graduated high school but are not yet 25. They may be in college, the military and/or in the work force. We will be arranging a “Super Sunday” for them, look for more info in the Sunday bulletin.

Blood DriveThe annual St. John’s Veteran’s Day blood drive was once again a huge success. In spite of the weather and the temporary computer breakdown, 14 units of blood were collected. A huge thank you to the donors who waited it out and to Mary Zuege, who organized and supervised the event. Our next blood drive at St. John’s will be Veteran’s day 2020, observed on November 9.

Family Promise

Kathleen Wagner of FPOC (Family Promise of Ontario County) came to St. John’s on Sunday, November 17 and spoke with the adult Bible study group about the FPOC program and how it has developed after completing its first full year. She described the program operation and plans for the future and described some of the success stories of familes who have graduated from the program. We hope to have Kathleen return to give us more information at our Thanksgiving dinner.

The FPOC day center is now located on Main Street Canandaigua in the former rectory of the Episcopalian Church. Clients who are not working spend their daytime hours there doing job searches and receiving guidance from the staff. They can also shower and do laundry there, and the children and picked up and dropped off there by their school busses.

Volunteers for the evenings are always needed. Shifts are only two hours and our schedule to host

As always, thank you!

Angel Tree and Christmas Baskets

The Christmas season is here and with it comes the opportunity to share the joy of it with those in our community who are less fortunate. Every year we distribute letters to area families through the Victor and Pal/Mac school districts, offering a basket of food and gifts for the children. When a family replies, they tell us ages and preferences of the children, and we note that information on a paper angel for our “Angel Tree”. Also on the angel is an id number for each child and a family id letter so that gifts can be grouped by family for easy distribution. This year the Angel Tree will go up the week before Thanksgiving so that members of the church can have sufficient time to shop for and wrap presents. Gifts must be returned to church by Sunday, December 15. Pick-up by families will happen Saturday, December 21.

When you choose an angel from the tree please find the corresponding child number and family letter on the sign-up sheets and put your name and contact information next to the child(ren) you have chosen. This is so important as it will ensure that there are gifts for each child. Then purchase and wrap your gifts and leave them near the tree no later than Sunday, December 15.

Sometimes families will want to sponsor an entire family as part of their Christmas celebration. Bless you for this! If you want to do this, please note this on the sign-up sheet first, then try to find all of the angels that correspond to the sign-up. This way, duplication will be avoided.

Food will also be collected during this time. We combine contributions from the congregation with the food collected by our scouts. It will all be sorted and bagged one evening during the week of December 15. The exact day will be announced in church when the time gets closer. We welcome you to join us for this activity; last year we had great helpers and it went very smoothly and quickly.

The true angels in this activity are you, members of St. John’s, who are so generous and thoughtful in your giving. The families who receive these gifts are always overwhelmed and very grateful. One cannot miss seeing God’s love in action here.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT 2019: SUNDAY, December 18th, during the 10:30am Service.

Today is November 18th and we are already working on our Annual Christmas Pageant. Parts have been assigned and we are rehearsing diligently to prepare our “heavenly chorus.”

Our final run-through will be on Saturday, Dec 14th, time to be determined. We need a few volunteers from the congregation to give us a hand, especially on the 14th and on the day of the pageant. Please contact me directly (585 943 9583) or Lance Eckler at the church office (315 986 3045) if you have a few hours to share.

This year’s theme is JOY. Please invite your families and friends to share the JOY of Christmas presented by the children.

Also related to Christmas: the children are working on a mission project to share with other children. The Green Angels of Wayne County collects new and gently used toys for children who would otherwise go without this Christmas.

The children are bringing in toys (new or gently used) that they have outgrown or simply want to donate. The toys will be collected and taken to the Green Angels in time for Christmas. We have a display set up by the Family Room for our members to see the Sunday School children’s mission project (note: we are NOT asking for additional donations from the congregation).

2018 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT :

The annual Sunday School Christmas Pageant will be held on Sunday December 15th during the 10:30AM church service. Messages to Pastor   Jen BarnesJust a friendly reminder as we get into the busy Christmas season.... Many times we leave church, stop and tell Pastor something important and then nothing gets done with it and of course we get mad because we think -- we told him.. Pastor is extremely busy on Sunday mornings and is rushing from service to confirmation to service and then over to Redeemer!  So to keep everyone happy and make sure we are all getting the correct information, please use the Green papers found on the outside of every pew in the church.  There is a box at the back of the church for the notes to be put in.   Thank you for understanding!
