All the above photographs show documentary photography in one way. The two silhouettes of

animals/ bugs show documentary photography by the way in which they have been taken in their natural habitats. It’s suggested that the purpose of the photographs were to portray the lives of these animals. Three other photographs show the contrast in life styles within the photographs, the last two photographs suggest that the people come from poorer countries and have to work in harder conditions than most people. Both photographs show young children working hard, this can be seen as documentary as it tells a story and a way of life. The variations of colours used in the photographs appear to improve the photographs. For instance the first photograph shows contrast of black and white, using these shades allow us to see where the light is coming from and improves the photograph adding more detail and individuality. Only a small selection of colours have been used in these images, which allows them all to have a connection and makes the selection as a whole look more professional.

The last photograph and three black and white images all show a single person, portraying them in different ways. The locations they are in and the way the photographs have been framed tell alot about each person. The left hand bottom photograph is of a man eating, the photograph could be said to be quite disturbing as the man appears to be very skinny and ill. The black and whiteness of this image helps to add more dramatic effect as it allows the lighting to capture every indent of his body, showing more detail. This all makes the audeience feel sympathy towards him. The other photographs also portray something within them that makes the audeince feel something towards the people in them. Such as the child in the window. They appear to look lonley and down, this makes the audience again feel sympathy towards the child. Also making us curious as to what they are looking at. The colourful photograph of an elderly woman and man, shows something different. The signs in their hands makes it seem they are protesting against something, this can be seen as documentary photography as it allows events to be recorded.

Second and last photograph represent different cultures, allowing us to see the variations of life styles of other cultures. The colours of these

hotographs appear dingy and dull, this makes the viewer beleive they live in poorer living conditions. The two black and white photographs show different types of documentary photography. The first shows a small group of children playing a board game, where as the other is of an elderly man walking away from the camera. The black and white of this image works really well as it allows the elderly man to stand out in the photograph against his surroundings. The last two photographs are of different animals. The one of bats flying allow us to see them in their natural habitate, whereas the dog was taken within a studio. This is shown through the lighting used on the dog.
