PRESS INFO – WINTER 2018/19

All forms of winter sport and boundless freedom on the Kitzsteinhorn:Maiskogel Family Ski Mountain takes quality to a whole new level in winter 2018/19

Skiing & snowboarding on the Kitzsteinhorn promises exceptional outdoor fun and winter sports action: Salzburg’s only glacier ski area is a true “playground” for families, ski tourers, freestylers and freeriders. In addition to virtually limitless opportunities for winter sports amid the magnificent mountain landscapes of Hohe Tauern National Park, thanks to TOP OF SALZBURG-Gipfelwelt 3000 the Kitzsteinhorn also features a fascinating year-round destination for winter sports enthusiasts and regular visitors, plus a great selection of culinary highlights and cool events. And as of this coming winter, the mythos of the Kitzsteinhorn begins a new and exciting chapter: One stage of the lift project known as “K-onnection Kaprun – Maiskogel – Kitzsteinhorn” has now been completed, setting a whole new standard of quality as we enter winter season on Maiskogel Family Ski Mountain.

Winter comes early on the Kitzsteinhorn and it lasts a long time, too: An optimal scenario, in other words, for everyone who values the advantages of the coldest season and loves the snow & ice! In fact, everyone who is biting at that winter sports “bit” gets to hear those magic words, “Let’s head up to the Kitz!” in October already. And from then until early summer, here in Salzburg’s only glacier ski area the glories of winter sports are celebrated practically every single day. The Kitzsteinhorn boasts absolutely reliable snow conditions, an enormous breadth of opportunities for winter sports fans, for freestylers, freeriders and snow lovers, as well as a true joy for innovation.

3 x gold for Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area and its wealth of opportunities Once you arrive at the Alpine Center at 2450 m above sea level, the glacier ski area literally lies right there at your feet. It is essentially a big playground for all fans of winter sports: The Kitzsteinhorn is all about wide pistes, state-of-the-art lifts, inviting restaurants and broad vistas of the gigantic Hohe Tauern range; also home to three snowparks and Austria’s most brilliant superpipe. One of the most extreme challenges of the ski area: the “Black Mamba” piste with a 63% gradient. Since last year, everyone who likes to collect statistics has been able to check how many vertical meters they have logged during their day of skiing with the help of Skiline. And beginning this season, Skiline fans have two additional highlights to look forward to: a Speedcheck next to the Kristallbahn mountain terminal as well as a Skimovie hill and giant slalom course on the glacier. In view of the wide array of highlights, it came as no surprise when the biggest test portal of ski resorts worldwide, Skiresort.de, crowned the Kitzsteinhorn as their 2018 test winner in three different categories: “Top-class: World’s leading ski resort up to 60 piste km”, “Snowpark” and “Best Glacier Ski Area”.

On- and off-piste: The Kitzsteinhorn for freeriders and ski tourersThe Kitzsteinhorn is famous for its deep-snow runs. Freeriders truly love the five marked routes: The “Freeride Info Base” as well as the “Info Points” at the entrance to the deep-snow hills provide important tips about safety in open terrain and give you the current avalanche threat level. In an avalanche practice area, freeriders can learn how to handle avalanche location transponders correctly. Workshops for beginners and experienced skiers are held in cooperation with two local ski schools on “Freeride Monday”. For ski tourers, the Kitzsteinhorn offers two marked ascent routes from the Langwiedboden: the “Schneekönigin” requires a 474 m gain on the way up to the Alpine Center at 2450 m above sea level, while the “Eisbrecher” route rises 899 m and brings you to the mountain terminal of the Maurerlift at 2875 m. Guided ski tours are offered every Thursday: Accompanied by your guide, you will make your way to the top of the Tristkogel (elev. 2642 m), followed by an exhilarating ride back down through deep snow.

Page 2: €¦  · Web view: Salzburg’s only glacier ski area is a true “playground” for families, ski tourers, freestylers and freeriders. In addition to virtually limitless . opportunities

After all of their deep-snow adventures, freeriders and tourers generally gather in the Skyline Bar at the Alpine Center: Here, they also serve food designed to meet the needs of endurance athletes. From 23 to 25 Nov. 2018, the big “Bergwelten Ski-Touring Opening” will be held for the very first time, including opportunities to give the latest ski-touring equipment a “test drive” along with a side program that everyone is invited to attend.

Prize-winning snowparks on the Kitzsteinhorn for rookies and Olympians The three snowy snowparks on the Kitzsteinhorn are some of the world’s best, promising all the variety anyone could wish for. The superpipe is in a class of its own. It was here, just last springtime in fact, that the world elite prepared for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The “Glacier Park” opens in October, the superpipe, “Eagle Line” and “Easy Park” in December, followed by the “Central Park” in January and “South Central Park” in February. Adventure-hungry kids are sure to be in their element in the “Easy Park”! Here, young snowboarders and freestylers can practice on smaller obstacles before they eventually graduate to the “Central Park” or the superpipe, with its 6 m high walls. Freestyle coaching sessions and workshops offered by Kaprun Ski School and Ski Dome Oberschneider teach correct technique. The Kitzsteinhorn has proven how family-friendly it is for many years. That also includes a special offer known as “Power of 10”: Children and teens under 19 pay only €10 for an all-day pass every Saturday.

TOP OF SALZBURG-Gipfelwelt 3000 – a fascinating year-round excursion destination for everyone Up at the mountain terminal at 3029 m above sea level, TOP OF SALZBURG-Gipfelwelt 3000 is an attraction that promises beautiful views of Hohe Tauern National Park. Even non-skiers have a lot to look forward to thanks to two panoramic lookout platforms, Cinema 3000 showing the film “Kitzsteinhorn – THE NATURE”, the National Park Gallery along with the highest restaurant in Salzburg. Winter hikes and cross-country skiing are also possible on the Kitzsteinhorn.

Artistic world of ice: 13th ICE CAMP presented by Audi quattro For the thirteenth time, the impressive ICE CAMP at 2600 m above sea level will reveal a fascinating world of ice and snow to visitors. In the area close to the Alpine Center, every year sculptors, builders and light-designers create a brand-new monumental structure out of natural materials in just a six-week building period. To this end, around 60 tons of ice and 2500 m³ of snow are transported and worked with: The result is three interconnected igloos, each of which is 12 m in diameter, that are used to house a “Bar Room”, the “Audi Show Room” and an “Art Room” on a total of 250 m². The ICE CAMP opens on 05.01.2019: It is a highly popular meeting place for winter sports fans and excursioners, offering a relaxed atmosphere, good music and fascinating art.

3K K-onnection Kaprun – Maiskogel – Kitzsteinhorn: one of the biggest lift projects in the Alps The desire to create a link between Kaprun’s local mountain – the Maiskogel Family Ski Area – and the legendary Kitzsteinhorn generated one of the most extraordinary lift-building projects in the Eastern Alps. In December 2018, the opening of the new MK Maiskogelbahn will herald the completion of the first stage. The new 10-passenger mono-cable gondola adds even greater quality to the whole Maiskogel experience. In December 2019, the 3K K-onnection will then complete the string of lift pearls all the way up to the Kitzsteinhorn itself. As of winter season 2019/20, winter sports fans will then be able to ride directly from the town center of Kaprun (elev. 768 m) via the Maiskogel and up to TOP OF SALZBURG-Gipfelwelt 3000 on the Kitzsteinhorn (3029 m). Which means, for the very first time the Kitzsteinhorn will be able to offer “ski-in/ski-out”, putting itself squarely in the elite league of Alpine ski areas. The one-of-a-kind panoramic ride will cover a total distance of 12 km, making it the longest mountain-lift line in the Eastern Alps, whilst also spanning the greatest elevation. www.k-onnection.com

A new dimension of winter sport on Maiskogel family ski mountainWith its around 20 piste kilometers and “Maisi Phantasiepark”, the Maiskogel in the town center of Kaprun

is a perfect winter playground for families. Construction of the 3K K-onnection, which will link Kaprun with the Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area, also means added quality for winter sports fans on the Maiskogel. The 10-passenger MK Maiskogelbahn will get its first season on the Maiskogel underway on December 14, 2018. Thanks to the newly constructed Stanger mid-station (elev. 1137 m), skiers are able to hit the pistes faster than ever, while the elevation of the second lift section, which allows skiers to ride back down from the mid-station, means the season can begin earlier and end later. Guests of the family ski area also get to enjoy the many new amenities and added conveniences. For example, as of winter 2018/19 they will be able to take advantage of the newly built multi-function Kaprun Center in the middle of town: It is home to the valley lift station of the new MK Maiskogelbahn, including ticket windows & services, an Intersport sports and rental shop as well as a ski depot with 2000 storage spaces.

The coolest events of winter 2018/19 Whether in radiant sunshine, amid mystical clouds or on a starry night: events on the Kitzsteinhorn are always a unique experience. Things get underway with the legendary winter opening known as “WOW Glacier Love”.

- “WOW Glacier Love” – a festival of the finest electronic music. From 2 – 4 November 2018, international DJs will be standing at the turntables and live acts will transform the town center of Kaprun into the coolest outdoor dance floor you could imagine. On the glacier, you will be able to test the very latest winter sports equipment for free. Freestylers will show off their most spectacular moves during the Cash4Tricks contest in the Glacier Park.

- The new “Bergwelten Ski-Touring Opening” in cooperation with magazine “Bergwelten” will take place on the Kitzsteinhorn from 23 – 25 November 2018. The variety-packed program includes guided tours, workshops and talks, as well as opportunities to check out the season’s newest equipment.

- At the “Kitzsteinhorn Schneekönig” ski-touring competition on 25 November 2018, ski tourers will kick off the racing season. Everyone is invited to participate: from rookie to pro!

- A magically beautiful experience is promised by “Mystic Mountain: Kitzsteinhorn BBQ Night” on 25 January, 22 February and 15 March 2019. It is then that the nighttime glacier, alpenhorns, mulled wine and hot punch as well as finger-licking BBQ will turn the Kitzsteinhorn into an extraordinary grill zone. At 5:30 in the evening, visitors ride the lift up to 2500 m above sea level, where they can sit down to a delicious meal at Restaurant Gletschermühle: after cooking local delicacies on a stone grill for themselves, just the way they like it. At 9 p.m., they can then board the lift and float through the nighttime stillness back down to the valley below. This offer includes the barbecue itself, a lift ride up the mountain on Gletscherjets 1 & 2 starting at 5:30, as well as an impressive ride down to the valley by 9 o’clock. Adults pay € 75, children under 15: € 55.

- On 23 March 2019, the pros of the freeride scene will go head-to-head in open terrain during the “X OVER RIDE”, simultaneously earning valuable points in their bid to qualify for the Freeride World Tour.
