Accordingly, the main narrative concerns in his works are marriage, religion, society and social class, isolation, gender, and love. In Jude the obscure, Hardy develops some of these themes. Published in 1895, Jude the Obscure tells the story of the central character Jude Fawley's tragic life and failed love experiences. I will conclude my presentation by introducing my main questions about this novel, and telling my audience how I plan to develop my raised questions in my thesis project during next semester.

Marxism with its Key Concepts

Onur Kaptan(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan YILDIZ)

Marxism as a political and philosophical idea aims to change the world system by eliminating the class structure. Troubles in society started with the class difference in the nineteenth century. Those troubles were related to profit and money. In the Victorian era, people became poorer because bourgeois made their profit and did not think about the workers. According to Marx, the system in this era was flawed, and to provide equal chance of living standards to society, elimination of class structure was necessary. To eliminate class structure and make a healthy system for society, one should examine what kinds of illnesses capitalism had when it came to society. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels as pioneers of the Marxist ideas laid some key concepts to illuminate the sicknesses of capitalism and class structure. Accordingly, this study aims to explain the key concepts of Marxism: economic base and superstructure, alienation, commodity fetishism and commodification.

The Clergy in the Middle Ages

Büşra Çakar(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

In the Middle Ages, everyone belonged to a particular social category. So, the idea of the “estates” is important to the social structure of the Middle Ages. The feudal medieval society was traditionally divided into three estates. The first estate was the clergy consisting of the people who prayed. The second estate was the nobility, those who fought. The third estate was the commoners, those who worked. The reason why the clergy was the first estate is that they received their authority from God. The nobility also received their authority from the clergy.  The commoners had no rights or authority. Briefly, each of the estates played an important role in the hierarchical social order. But, after a while, especially in the late fourteenth century, the members of the estates, in particular the clergy, violated the traditional borders of the three estates. This presentation shortly deals with the three estates and then focuses on the clergy and how the members of the clergy abused their responsibilities and duties in the Middle Ages.

The Use of Drama in English Language Teaching

Ayşe Özkan(Supervisor: Assist. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

Despite having education for many years, learners still may not have enough courage to use the language in front of an audience. Traditional English classes have an active role in language teaching; however, they do not give the learners adequate opportunity to use their output. This means while the main purpose of language teaching is to ensure communication in daily life, it is neglected. For this purpose, drama in English language teaching has been used as a technique for many years. In this regard, this presentation deals with the use of drama in English language teaching. In order to clarify the concept, it tries to answer some questions such as what drama is, who needs it, and when it can be used in class. Then, it includes strategies about how drama can be put into practise in classrooms with the help of activities such as mime, simulation, role-play, exploiting a scripted play, creating one's own script improvisation without a script, exploiting the course book for dramatic purposes and further possibilities. Finally, it draws at the conclusion with the advantages of using drama in ELT classes.

Media Guide for Students

Özge Can Yalçın(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

The term ‘media’ includes the whole range of modern communications media: television, the cinema, video, radio, photography, advertising, newspapers and magazines, recorded music, computer games and the internet. There is a connection between the media and the education. Media education is education about the media. This is not the same as education through the media – for example, using TV or the internet to learn about other school subjects. Our aim isn’t to stop you from watching your favourite TV programmes, or to save you from what some people see as harmful influences. Media would not exist without audiences. Yet the media have to compete for people’s attention and interest; and finding and keeping an audience is not easy. New technologies create all sorts of possibilities for making media. With the right computer packages, you can manipulate photographs and images, create layouts for newspapers or magazines, edit video and sound, and put your work out on the World Wide Web. This technology is getting cheaper all the time, and it can make your work look really professional. Aims of this study are explaining media education, production, key questions, audiences, and making media.

Speech Act Theory

Simge Işık(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Fehmi Turgut)

The purpose of this study is to explain the nature of speech act theory which claims that utterances are examined by their propositional content, the intention of the utterance, and its outcome. A speech act in linguistics and the philosophy of language is an utterance that has performative function in language and communication. In the past three decades, speech act theory has become an important branch of the contemporary theory of language. This theory initiated by John L. Austin, developed by John R. Searle. The theory is clarified and analysed both in regards to its faults and advantages. Suggestions for the progression of the theory are developed, using the ideas of other scholars and theorists. By studying how utterances are formed and issued, along with the looking into utterance circumstances and sincerity, one can garner a clear glimpse into what constitutes a performative speech act and what does not.

Virginia Woolf and Her Concept of Androgyny

Gamze Bodur(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

Androgyny is a concept which means to have both male and female features. As a feminist writer, Virginia Woolf widely uses concept of androgyny in her works. According to her, by combining the traits of men and women, we become a real person, which is also a necessity to be a good writer. Writing as a purely man or a woman hinders creativity. So, for Woolf, creative mind should be androgynous. Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own (1929) and Orlando (1928) deal with her androgyny concept. In A Room of One’s Own, by supporting woman writers, Woolf explains her concept of androgyny. In Orlando, Woolf discusses how to become an ideal person with sex change. In her works, we can see her concept of androgyny with different aspects. In this respect, this study aims to analyse Woolf’s concept of androgyny as depicted in her A Room of One’s Own (1929) and Orlando.

The Nature of Text: Text Linguistics

Avni Güner(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

Text linguistics, also known as written discourse analysis, seeks to analyze texts beyond the level of the sentence, typically but not necessarily in their situational context. Text linguistics tends to focus on the patterns of how information flows within and among sentences by looking at aspects of texts like coherence, cohesion, the distribution of topics and comments, and other discourse structures. Much like syntax is concerned with the structure of sentences, text linguistics is concerned with the structure of texts. Accordingly, text linguisticscan be defined as the study of text as a product or as a process. The text-as-a-product approach is focused on the text cohesion, coherence, topical organization, illocutionary structure and communicative functions; the text-as-a-process perspective studies the text production, reception and interpretation. Text can be understood as an instance of language use, a relatively self-contained unit of communication. As a ´communicative occurrence´ it meets seven criteria of textuality (the constitutive principles of textual communication): cohesion, coherence, intentionality, acceptability, informativity, situationality and intertextuality, and three regulative principles of textual communication: efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness.

On the Uses of Studying Literature

Mine Çalhan(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

Literature, like any art form, engages the reader in a complex set of emotional, symbolic, moral, intellectual and social considerations. Literature uses the normal means of communication -- language, images, symbols, codes, stories -- but uses them with more complexity and subtlety than is normal in everyday communication. As well, it avails itself of a certain sensibility we have to such things as form, sensual experience, rhythm, repetition, contrast, which sensibility we call the 'aesthetic'. What I have listed below are a number of suggestions as to how literature works for us, presented as theses; they are tentative -- open to challenge and change -- and not exclusive. My goal is to give you a sense of how one can begin to conceptualize why, aside from the fact that it might be fun, one can profit from the reading and study of literature. In the case of literature, as with any art form, reading and study are closely allied: the more one learns how literature works, the more open one is to the effects that it can have -- one gains competency as a reader, and literature becomes richer and more engaging for one. You will notice that there are overlaps among the theories.

The Use of Drama to Enhance Speaking Skills

Elifcan Bayır(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

Drama is an effective tool that has been used recently in education to enhance students’ psychomotor and mental capacity. Using drama provides many advantages to students in speaking, listening, interpreting, and comprehending the languages that they are supposed to know. In this presentation, how significant using drama activity is for students to enhance their speaking skills was taken into account mostly. The objectives of this study are to examine the types of drama activities such as mime, role play, simulation, improvisation, scripts and what aspects they will get after being in a drama activity. Many students have difficulties in speaking a second language, especially they do not know how to practice the words, to put information into practice, and to express themselves. However, drama gives students an opportunity to practice the language, to learn new vocabulary, and to reduce their fears on speaking the target language.

William Shakespeare as a Tragedy Writer

Dilber Öter(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

Tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes an accompanying catharsis or pleasure in audiences. The term tragedy dates back to the ancient Greek. Although the word tragedy is often used loosely to describe any sort of disaster or misfortune, it more precisely refers to a work of art that probes with serious questions concerning the role of man in the universe. Tragedy dating back to the Greek was introduced to many cultures and civilizations, and England was also one of them. The Elizabethan period, especially, has been defined as the golden age of theatre and tragedy with its master of tragedy: William Shakespeare. The very well-received examples of Shakespeare’s tragedy are Titus Andronicus (1594), Romeo and Juliet (1597), Julius Ceasar (1623), Hamlet (1603), Othello (1622), King Lear (1608), Macbeth (1623), Anthony and Cleopatra (1623), and Coriolanus (1623). Shakespeare- playwright, actor, and poet- was also known as the “Bard of Avon” due to his contributions to tragedy by his unique works. In this context, this study aims to depict the origin and background of tragedy, the Elizabethan theatre and William Shakespeare as a great tragedy writer.

Post-Truth: Perception vs Reality

Güner Kazancıoğlu(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi TURGUT)

The Web and the social networks have given legions of idiots the right to speak, whereas before they had no voice.

Umberto Eco

The ways media means spread fake news make lies more commonplace and hence, relativize the truth. This leads to the fading of the value or credibility of the media in comparison to personal opinions. Thus, the facts themselves take second place, while “how” a story is told takes precedence over “what”. People care not about what has happened, but rather about listening, seeing and reading the version of facts which more closely fits with each person’s ideology. This notion can be explained with the word Post-truth, which was declared as the Word of the year for 2016 by the Oxford Dictionary. Thus, the unexpected political events and unexplainable social situations that occurred in 2016 has found their perfect word to hide behind. Nowadays, social networks such as Youtube, Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter or any other

What Do We Mean When We Talk about Voice in Texts?

Efilay Kaya(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

Nowadays, anything that contains meaning, which does not necessarily have to be discourse, can be acknowledged as some kind of “text”. When it comes to the use of voice in order to represent discourse or emphasize it, one must swim against the stream of the dominant visual metaphor and accentuate the importance of the sound metaphor. As the word “voice” recently has gained importance and has been started to be used more in every possible way, it unfortunately leads to the fact that it lost its meaning. It is of great importance to be aware of what is really meant by the term “voice” or else it will only be a term that expresses the goodness and virtue of a writing. As voice can be treated in a literal and physical way, it is also possible to see how it transfers to writing. Those senses of voices, that can be applied to writing, can be distinguished in five different ways can those can be categorised in: the audible voice, dramatic voice, recognizable or distinctive voice, voice with authority and lastly resonant voice or presence. Each of these senses will be explained on what they are and how they are just but most importantly how they can be transfer into writing.

Critical Reading

Gizem Kızılyar(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

To non -critical readers, texts provide facts. Readers gain knowledge by memorizing the statements within a text. This is a surface-level of learning and won’t get you very far at all in your research, which has to be an in depth understanding of your subject. To the critical reader, any single text provides but one portrayal of the facts, one individual’s “take” on the subject matter. Critical readers thus recognise not only what a text says, but also how that text portrays the subject matter. They recognise the various ways in which each and every text is the unique creation of a unique author. A non-critical reader might read a history book to learn the facts of the situation or to discover an accepted interpretation of those events. A critical reader might read the same work to appreciate how a particular perspective on the events and a particular selection of facts can lead to particular understanding.

A Darwinian Theory of Beauty Based on Oscar Wilde’s Philosophy of Aesthetic

Vildan Aktaş(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Karam Nayebpour)

A cat’s purr, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Charlie Chaplin dancing across the screen, a Chuck Palahniuk novel, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, or a stunning match-winning goal in a World Cup soccer match… What is the beauty? Is it this brief list includes creature beings, piece of arts, skilled human actions or is it something like ‘‘One of the great facts of the world, like sunlight, or springtime, or the reflection in the dark waters of that silver shell we call the moon. It cannot be questioned. It has divine right of sovereignty.’’ as Oscar Wilde defined in his spectacular novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray? Moreover, is the theory- it’s in the eye of the beholder that is a matter of public record- can be the diorism of beauty? Ultimately, I can give you a taste what I intellectualize as the most puissant theory of beauty we yet have; and I get it not from a postmodern art theorist, or bigwig art-critic. This theory comes from an adept on worms and pigeon breeding, Charles Darwin, with my combine with Oscar Wilde’s percept of aesthetic.

A Comparative Approach to Didem Madak, Sylvia Plath, and Forugh Farrokhzad

Mehtap Gümüş(Supervisor: Asst.Prof. Dr. Karam Nayepbour)

My seminar presentation is about three writers from three different languages. My study is in fact a comparative study. A comparative study in literature generally analyses texts from different languages in terms of language, subject, and theme. In my study, I compare three female poets from three different languages—the American poet Sylvia Plath, the Turkish poet Didem Madak, and the Persian poet Forugh Farrokhzad. In my seminar presentation, I will first introduce the comparative literature. Here I will focus on the historical development of comparative studies as a literary approach. In the second part, I will introduce the three poets and their poetry. Despite the fact that they are from different languages, their poetry shows some similarities. I will conclude my presentation by focusing on the aspects I am going to analyse in the three mentioned poets’ poetry in my graduation thesis project next semester.

The current study aims to represent the biography of Sait Faik Abasıyanık accounted as one of the most outstanding narrators in Turkish Literature especially within the context of the substantial contributions and position of the author. Sait Faik Abasıyanık wrote with a passion and proclaimed “I would go mad if I did not write.” In his stories, he criticized the wealthy, privileged class and accused them of being snobbish and abusive, and he chose to defend the poor. Abasıyanık was especially successfully in expressing human trust and the joy of life that emerged from it. He is considered a master storyteller because within the short span of the genre, he managed to portray and defend an array of human thought, emotions and conditions, with a special emphasis on individuals who did not lose anything from their humanities despite the abuse that they withstood. Ecocriticism in Azra Kohen’s Aeden

Öznur Akdeniz(Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Çıraklı)

In spite of all the perfection in Aeden, the planet Earth is full of problems and bitterness. The novel offers an outward view to the reality of the problems which people brought to our world Earth. The nonsense that is considered as normal, which prevents the development of human life and the conversion of a person into a more meaningful existence, is written in the novel based on scientific evidence. People are aware of using mines and materials, which the planet offers them, in a wrong way. And even this fact and even they know what kind of problems arise as a cause, they do not know how to solve those problems, because of the adaption feature the human organism starts to ignore them. To be able to solve a problem, it is necessary to know the origin of the problem. In this sense, Aeden is a compassionate novel. In this novel, Kohen draws an impression of nature that is repressed by human beings. Nature is not just simple scenery or a stage set in Kohen's fiction; it plays a major role in her characters' regression, which develops in parallel to their alienation from nature. This study explores the origins of man's alienation in nature in Kohen's work, and the implications for society such as alienation continue. This study employs an ecocritical approach to explore the relationship between humans and nature in the novel Aeden of Akilah Azra Kohen.

Examining The Lord of the Rings in Terms of Heroism

Devran Beşikçi(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

Heroism is a term which is associated with courage and selfless action. The term ‘hero’ dates back to the early ages, but the most important example of heroism in English literature is Beowulf. Since then, the terms hero and heroism have been used in literary texts. Heroism and heroes in literature are mainly related to epics. In epics, heroes are strong in build and brave in heart; they fight with dragons and monsters, slaying them and saving people and lands, becoming kings and living as their saviour. J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the important authors of modern literature, and The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are good examples for fantasy-epic. Although they were written in the 1950s they are like ancient epics, and contain various heroes. The Lord of the Rings, first written as a sequel to The Hobbit, later became a trilogy. In The Lord of the Rings, there is one main quest: the destruction of ‘The One Ring.’ Characters in the trilogy are either trying to prevent this quest or to aid it. There are many heroic characters and they act extraordinarily brave in some crucial moments even though most of them are not physically strong.

Sales Assistants’ Perception of Language Competence: Ordu-Fidangör Case

Cansu Duyar(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

This study investigates the sales assistants’ perception of language competence in Ordu- Fidangör, which is a touristic attraction. Tourism is an important sector which helps to develop a country's economy, and today the tourism sector needs some necessities for sales assistants. These are personal characteristics, basic literacy and numeracy, selling skills, computer literacy, product knowledge, a knowledge of the law and other regulations, taking responsibility and initiative, other areas, including using the telephone, merchandising and housekeeping, and customer service skills. Customer service skills require communicating with people. There are new economic investment regulations in Ordu, which draws tourists from many investors in different countries. Today, those people are mostly Arabic, and this creates difficulties about communication with the tourists, so they need another language to communicate with the language they are most familiar with except their mother tongue. But, is the competency level of the language which they are familiar with sufficient enough? From this aspect, this study aims at identifying the perceptions of sales assistants’ language proficiency. This is a qualitative study, ant it will attempt to elicit purposively selected ten sales assistants' perceptions of foreign language competence at the most attractive place Fidangör, in Ordu. The findings will be analyzed through the content analysis.

English as a Lingua Franca: ELF approach to pronunciation

Mihriban Kuş(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

This presentation indicates the patterns of English as a Lingua Franca and also includes the question ‘What is Lingua Franca?’ In the second part; I will mention about the difference between accent and intelligibility. Everybody has accent which is just a combination of speech sounds that you characteristically made and it is flexible thing. On the other hand, intelligibility is a combination of two people involved interaction which include speaker and listener. According to Jenkins (2007) each person has the responsibility of being understood and each must make an effort to understand. English language teaching industry has taken a more native speaker oriented approach and assumes that people using English as a second language are learning it. In order to similar or integrate within a native speaking community and that simply may not be the case certainly statistically it is unlikely to be the case nowadays. So it is just about teaching students to handle the English language as it really is. As it is used all around the world regardless of where you are, what is important is who are speaking to whom.

Plagiarism in Academic World: The Ways and Reasons

Hacer Taş(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

Plagiarism has been the oldest problematic factor in the academic world since the ancient times. Thanks to technology, it has become much easier to plagiarise than it was in the past. From Elementary School to universities, this academic dishonesty is a serious problem that should be dealt with. Although there are hundreds of plagiarism checkers, it could not be still stopped and, in fact, spreads like bacteria. When some of the students are not aware of doing plagiarism, some of them even do not know anything about plagiarism but mostly, the students’ use ideas, words or works of others intentionally because of many reasons such as taking high marks or laziness. Also, they use many ways to present the ideas as their own. These ways make them different from the other plagiarists. In this presentation, the ways and some reasons for plagiarism will be handled. The main purpose of this presentation is to raise awareness of plagiarism and thus, both students and teachers can find a way or solution to avoid and cope with plagiarism by revealing its ways and reasons.

Analyzing Idioms and Their Frequencies in Two Textbooks: A Corpus-Based Study

Aysun Altun(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

The present study aimed at identifying and quantifying the idioms used in New Headway and Upstream textbooks based on two different English corpora; New Headway corpus, Upstream corpus and comparing the frequencies of the idioms across the two corpora. The first step of the study involved searching the books to find multi-word idiomatic expressions used in each. Idioms matching criteria for idiomaticity were selected and searched in the two online corpora to find their frequency of occurrence. Chi-square tests were, then, run to discover whether there were significant differences among the frequencies of occurrence of each idiom across each corpus. Having the number of idioms in each textbook, two other chi-square tests will then be run, the first aiming at finding out if there are any significant differences among the two books in terms of idiom types and the second, to compare their tokens. According to results, it whether there is any different in books in terms of both number and type of idioms will be stated based on the data gathered so far.

Furkan KaraBetül Tuğçe Mert

(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

An increasing number of recent studies have applied the insights and methodologies of corpus linguistics to second language (L2) writing pedagogy and research. Previous learner corpus studies have illuminated various kind of tendencies observed in a highly theoretical understanding of corpus use in L2 writing, but still leave gaps about the practical application for L2 writing teachers. The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of students’ writing experiences with corpus use, how it affects their development of L2 competence, and most importantly, how corpus technology can be integrated into L2 writing instruction at Karadeniz Technical University. Subjects of this study are consisted of 1st grade academic writing students. This research involved techniques such as classroom observations, open-ended interview. During the classroom observations the student writers who are also the subjects of the study were given various argumentative topics and the related corpus and they were asked to complete their essays by referring to the corpus prepared for their use. Open ended interviews were prepared but not yet delivered to the students.

Hedging in Academic Writing: Turkish EFL Learners’ Use of Hedging in their Academic Essays

Ferhan Ertürk(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

It is an undeniable fact that people need to show their stance towards a particular subject or that they need to strengthen or weaken the meaning in their essays at times necessary. Today, cautious language or specifically hedging is recognised as an important feature in academic writing. This study tries to investigate the use of hedges in academic essays of tertiary level EFL learners. Essays written by EFL learners were analysed through the taxonomy of different hedges presented by Salager-Meyer (1994). This study presents a quantitative corpus-based comparative study of hedges in Turkish EFL learners’ writings. For this purpose, Karadeniz Technical University Corpus of Academic Learner English (KTUCALE) and the Turkish International Corpus of Learner English (TICLE) were used as a non-native corpora and the Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS) was used as a reference corpus. Specifically, this study aimed: 1) to determine how often the EFL students use hedges in their academic writings. 2) to examine what hedges they mostly use. 3) to reveal whether there are overuse or underuse patterns between non-native and native students in terms of using hedges. Finally, preliminary findings seem to suggest that there are significant overuse and some underuse patterns in terms of using hedges in all corpora.

Reading Strategies

Asuman Dilbaz (Supervisor: Lec. Saye Zibande)

Considering the ways of reading, teachers and learners should use the strategies for their comprehension, sequential perception, identification of the elements of the text, and etc. Alyousef (2006) explains that reading can be accepted as an ‘‘interactive’’ process that is between a reader and a text. However, reading is a process that helps the learners reading fluency or automaticity. ‘‘The National Reading Panel (2000) specifies that the use of explicit and systematic classroom reading instruction must include comprehension strategies to be considered best practice’’ (Zascavage et al., 2012, p.176). The purpose of this study is to investigate reading strategies which have significant importance to improve learners’ reading comprehension. Finally, there are several reading strategies that can be used by teachers and students; however, the use of strategies depends on the purpose of reading. Evaluating the Cornerstones of Language Education: Course Books

Elif Şimşek(Supervisor: Inst. Dr. Şakire Erbay Çetinkaya)

Cross-cultural interaction occurs as a result of geographical positions and negotiations of countries. As a part of the culture, the language takes place in society over time. Since the Ottoman period, English has been taught as a foreign language in schools. The materials used in the English language teaching have an important role for shaping the frame of learning process. Among them course books used for English Language Teaching (ELT) provide learners the necessary information and various skills related to curriculum in one book. Teachers must take into consideration some criteria while selecting the course book for their students. Teaching materials evaluation and adaptation studies reveal that course books must pass through the evaluation process to become available to learners and increase the quality of education, and in this sense various checklists are generated for evaluation. This seminar will focus on the nature of course books, its roles, and ways to evaluate it.

Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety among Non-Native English Teachers

İrem Naz Saraçoğlu(Supervisor:Lec. Dr. M. Kerem Kobul)

Common sense has it that non- native English teachers try to encourage their students about using L2 in language classrooms. However, it is a well-known fact that teachers have also anxiety or problems about using L2 smoothly; thus, they need to be encouraged by colleague or supervisor. There is a growing body of literature on language anxiety of EFL learners. However, there is dearth of studies examining teacher’s anxiety and nervousness. The key purpose of this study is to investigate foreign language teaching anxiety among non- native English teachers in Turkey. It also tries to explore the relationship between the level of anxiety and the duration of experience by shedding some light on some questions such as How to deal with anxiety? Which types of problems EFL teachers encounter? This study will measure anxiety of non – native English teachers using Foreign Language Teaching Anxiety Scale (FLTAS) that was developed by İpek (2006). The results will be further discussed.

A Comparison between Teachers’ and EFL Students' Perceptions of Presentation Anxiety

Hande Yıldız(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

Language anxiety is one of the most important concerns of the language learners. Considering the teachers’ aspect, anxiety also can influence on their teaching process. However, the students suffer from anxiety because of the anxiety-provoking nature of foreign language learning. Their primary concern about language anxiety is generally speaking situations because it is hard to express yourself in your own words spontaneously. That’s the reason why the language anxiety mostly comes from public speaking situations like presentation. The aim of this study is to identify differences in attitudes and the level of presentation anxiety on the basis of age, experience, and gender by comparing teachers’ and students’ perception of presentation anxiety. In this respect, 3rd-grade students, senior students, and a few instructors will contribute to my mixed method study which includes both questionnaire and interview respectively. After questionnaire results will be examined to what extent their level of anxiety will be identified and also the interviews will be made with the ones from each three levels. Besides, a few teachers will also contribute to interview with regard to their view of presentation anxiety. As a result, the result will be evaluated thanks to the analysis.

The Relationship between Cultural Identity and the Degree of Pronunciation Anxiety

Firdevs Arslan(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

Pronunciation anxiety is defined as ‘‘a feeling of apprehension experienced by FL [foreign language] learners either in the FL classroom or natural setting, deriving from negative FL pronunciation self-perceptions, fear of negative evaluation, and beliefs about the importance of pronunciation, difficulty in learning and the sound of the FL pronunciation’’ (Baran-Lucarz, 2014). Since early times, it has been a problem of Turkish EFL students to pronounce some words correctly from which derive pronunciation anxiety. The ‘‘affective filters’’ constructing this problem may be the age of learning the foreign language, instruction or motivation. There is a lack of research from the cultural identity standpoint. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to find out if there is a relationship between the cultural identity and the degree of pronunciation anxiety. This research will attempt to elicit the perceptions of learners who are studying English language and literature at a university in north-eastern Turkey. The students will be required to fill in a questionnaire and the results will be evaluated through the SPSS.

Burnout Level of Senior Students

Büşra Demir(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

Burnout has been identified as a significant issue among university students. The purpose of this presentation was to identify and describe the level of burnout in senior university students. University experience is important in terms of academic and social development levels of the students. While they are in university, they may experience academic, personal-social adjustment problems, gaining new opportunities and experiences for growth, maturation, change and development. From this point of view, the difficulties experienced during the university years can affect the performance and functions of students at different levels. Given that students may have limited resources for coping, particularly the level of academic cohesion may be affected by these difficulties. For this reason, it can be said that university students have to cope with many environmental and personal difficulties during their academic life. One of the main problems senior students have to deal with is feelings of exhaustion. The sense of burnout was measured by Maslach and Johnson (1981); emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, and most of the study on this subject are concentrated in the service, such as health and education. In recent years, many studies have shown that burnout is a very common problem among senior university students; burnout levels of the students; (Boudreau, Santen, Hemphill & Dobson, 2004) with variables of perceived stress, too much homework, anxiety of grades, low life satisfaction, low self-control, uncertainty for the future; perceived workload, low social support, and negative personality traits. Creating awareness about making use of the leisure time well, making widespread and functional psychological services and counselling centers, arranging weekly course hours can be accepted as recommendation in dealing with burnout.

Gender Differences in Using Language

Mehmet Kaan Aksu(Supervisor: Lec. Saye Zibande)

This study mainly focuses on differences in using language between genders. Various studies have been analyzed in order to comprehend these differences. One of the main differences was that in many societies a lot of pressure was put on men and women in regards to how they should speak. Men were expected to speak in a strong, manly, smart and impressive way. But on the other hand of the spectrum, women were expected to speak in a way that is soft, submissive and feminine. These prejudices are still continuing today even in the most developed countries. There are some societies that are trying to pass by these predetermined and forced thoughts on how a person speech should be affected by their sex. With the light of this study and many articles that have been examined throughout this research, the aim is to understand how and why these differences came to be.

Gratitude Expressions and Gender Differences EFL Learners

Hilal Ercenik(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

This study examined the strategies employed by tertiary level EFL learners from different regions and countries while they are using gratitude expressions. With this purpose in mind, 400 samples which were chosen on a purposive sampling methodology from the various English Departments were asked to answer an open-ended Discourse Completion Task designed and by Bald and Einstein (1969) and adapted by the researchers based on the specific needs and conditions. It is very important to know how people from different regions perform gratitude in expression. Hence in this study, we have considered four goals. First of all, we analyzed the types of gratitude strategies employed by EFL learners. Secondly, we aimed describing the types of gratitude strategies used by EFL learners. Thirdly, we investigated a cross-linguistic study on expression of gratitude by native and non-native Turkish speakers. Finally, we aimed to reveal the types of gratitude strategies in terms of regional variations and gender differences. The preliminary findings indicated that tertiary level Turkish EFL learners used various strategies in L1 but these strategies remained relatively limited in English. The findings also indicate that the ways gratitude is expressed do not show a certain tendency for one specific region.

Overuse of Discourse Markers in Turkish Learners’ (EFL) And Native Learners’ Writing: The Case of ‘I Think’ and ‘In My Opinion’

Gizem Dere(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay )

Discourse markers (I mean, you know, I think, kind of, sort of, well, you see, so) are mostly used both in spoken and writing skills by learner, especially, in second language acquisition process. And learners, sometimes, may overuse or underuse in their writing skills in comparison with native speakers. This study examines contrast of using of the pragmatic markers in the written text of Turkish English as foreign language (EFL) learners and of native. The focus of the comparison was the frequency of the phrases ‘I think’ and ‘in my opinion’. The important point of investigate that whether or not learners overuse or underuse such features when compared to native speakers. The analysis was done by comparing two argumentative academic corpora, KTUCLE (Karadeniz Technical University Corpus of Learner English) and LOCNESS (Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays). To contrast to two corpora is statistically significant ın order to measure overuse or underuse of discourse markers in academic corpora and to determine whether the possible differences. The results indicated that Turkish Learners (EFL), tend to much more using of discourse markers in their writing skills in comparison with native learners.

My Erasmus Experience and Observations in Poland

Mehmet Ali Kavak(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

The idea of studying abroad and leaving country borders is getting easier and more reachable in the world of 21st century in which English language is not specific to the countries that do not speak English. The increasing interest in study abroad directs students to apply for programs such as Erasmus and Mevlana to participate. This market is growing excessively in Turkey and the other European countries, and, for this reason, it is an encouragement and a chance for students to prove themselves around the world. Erasmus is a golden opportunity because it allows students to progress in many fields. I am one of those students. The purpose of this study is to ensure that the participants have a positive attitude towards Erasmus and Poland. The Difference between Active and Passive Procrastination

Ömer Küçükkaya(Supervisor: Asst.Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

All people in the world have some responsibilities, duties, tasks and they divided into two parts those who do, non-procrastinators, and those who do not, procrastinators. Firstly, non-procrastinators are well-organized, gradually increase the pace of work and have no problem, at least not so much problem, at the deadline. Second, procrastinators put off their duties till the last minute constantly. Basically procrastination means delaying, putting off the task needlessly but in the recent years, the term “active procrastination” is gained to the literature. Those who are called active, do this behaviour for a reason while the passive procrastinators just put off needlessly. Active procrastinators and the passive procrastinators differ in some points. The purpose of this presentation is to show the difference between active and passive procrastination. For example, sometimes active procrastinators need to feel time pressure. They think that they might be more productive under the time pressure. This is one of the reasons why they procrastinate.

How to develop Emotional Intelligence

Filiz Güler(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others recognize between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour, and manage and adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one's goals. Emotional Intelligence is absolutely essential in the formation, development, maintenance, and enhancement of close personal relationships. According to Goleman (1995), emotional intelligence ranges across four different areas of personal ability: Self-awareness, self-management, empathy and social awareness and relationship management. Unlike IQ, which does not change significantly over a lifetime, our EQ can evolve and increase with our desire to learn and grow. In that point, I try to explain the effects of Emotional Intelligence on us and how we can develop it.

It is well-known fact that one of the most problematic issues on academic writings is the use of adverbials. The problem of the use of adverbial connectors both in native students' academic writings and in non-native students' academic writings has been investigated through many studies by now. This paper includes previous findings about the use of adverbial. To this end, this study aims to investigate and to make comparison between native speakers of English and EFL students in terms of adverbial usage in academic writings. This is a corpus study and the data studied were taken from British Academic Written English (BAWE) and KTUCALE. All data were examined by using the free web programme "Sketch Engine." A Corpus Based Study on L2 English Hypothetical Conditionals

Dilek Cankur(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

Since 1980’s, the basic idea behind language performance and meaning which was primarily based on native speaker’s intuition has been shifted from introspection to focus on linguistics. Thus, so as to answer complex questions of language teaching and learning, systematic investigation of language occurrence was emphasized in linguistics. For this reason, corpus linguistics which enables L2 learners an important tool for the comprehension of natural language has become very popular for a long time. Besides, hypothetical conditional sentences formed by using conditional (if) that Turkish L2 learners of English frequently encounter as one of the particular kind of grammatical complexities is cooperated with a corpus based study. Therefore, this research should be understood as an attempt to reveal how possible effects of interlanguage impact on Turkish students’ over or underuse of hypothetical conditional clauses in their argumentative essays and whether advanced Turkish EFL learners use Type 2 and 3 if conditional statements implying to hypothetical conditionals in the same meaning as they appear among native speakers of American University students. This survey was conducted on EFL Turkish students’ argumentative essays collected in Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon. The data were gathered in the light of three corpora: Louvain Corpus of Native English Essays (LOCNESS), Turkish International Corpus of Learner English (TICLE), Karadeniz Technical University Corpus of Learner English (KTUCLE). Causes and Impacts of Absenteeism among University Students

Yağmur Küçükbekir(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Öznur Semiz)

Swords and shields were essential to be powerful in the past. As time has passed, the concept of power became more interested in university degrees. It would not be wrong to consider today’s university degrees as past’s swords. A degree is not enough to survive for it must include a high GPA. There are many factors to achieve a good degree and also to fail at university. Absenteeism is one these factors which mostly brings forth failure. It is rare that a student attends all classes and fails them. What must be sought behind failure is absenteeism. It is an academic epidemic that should be overcome. Therefore, the aim of this presentation is to illustrate causes and impacts of absenteeism among university students.

Computer Adaptive Testing on Determining Students’ Level of Language

Ramazan Sağlam(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

Rapidly advancing computer technologies have been improving the field of education by bringing out more advanced, time efficient and more practice tools, for many areas within the educational field including new materials and tools for testing and assessment. Through this advancement, Computer Adaptive Testing(CAT) methods have emerged to meet the needs for more advanced testing materials. Being used widely now, it is found to be one of the most efficient tools for testing and assessing students’ level of language by serving more equal and accurate questions to test takers. The aim of this study is to find out the efficiency of CAT, to stress test the potential of it, and to push its limits by testing new features on it and comparing it with the conventional pen and paper tests. To achieve the goals of this project, a new set of methods and tactics are added into the project using standard CAT technique to achieve and observe in more details to include more possibilities about CAT. The work presented here has profound implications for more studies in the future about testing and assessment.

The Use of L1 in L2 Classes: Students’ and Teachers’ Perspectives

Leyla Ömeroğlu(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

In line with a rapidly globalizing world, we have witnessed a pressing need for foreign language education in each passing day. Not surprisingly, the needs, wants and resources of learners in teaching and learning a foreign language were shaped by the prevalent changes. One contentious issue has been the role of the first language foreign or a second language instruction. From this perspective, this study will analyze the use of mother tongue, first language or native language/tongue in the English language learning, or, to put it differently, in the L2 classrooms. The aim of this study is to find why and where foreign language teachers use L1 and what students’ and teachers’ points of view about this usage are. Using the survey method, the study will attempt to investigate to what extent and in which particular conditions learners and teachers welcome the use of L1.

A Corpus-Based Study on the Use of Adverbs in Academic Vocabulary by Academic Authors

Yeliz Zambak(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

There is an expanding interest in the investigation of interlanguage developmental levels of EFL learners. The main purpose of these investigations is to describe the second and foreign language acquisition and its process. If two different interlanguages are compared, it can be seen that non- native features belong to one language group and a lot of learner populations share these features. The learners' acquisition series can be understandable along various stages of language learning thanks to the Corpus- based Interlanguage Analysis (CIA) (Cobb, 2003). In these stages, native learners and non- native speakers' competence level is the primary and significant element. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of adverbs in academic vocabulary by native English and non- native English (Turkish) academic authors. The methodology is based on the analysis of two corpora as KTUCALE and BAWE (British Academic Written English). The results will be evaluated using the quantitative analysis. The quantitative analysis depends on frequency calculations and comparisons among two corpora (via Sketch engine and log-likelihood value).

A Case Study in Corpus Analysis: 15 July Coup Attempt in Turkey

İrfan Kankul(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

The aim of this study is to examine the corpus analysis of three leading American and two leading Turkish newspapers about the coup attempt on 15 July 2016 in Turkey. The New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post have been selected as the American newspapers whose corpora were analysed from the news published between 16 July and 16 August. Similarly, the corpora of two Turkish newspapers (Dailysabah, Dailynews) have been extracted from the first month after the failed coup attempt. This study details the corpora under 6 categories: top 10 roper nouns, nouns, verbs, adjectives, attributive adjectives (about Fetullah Gülen) and adverbials mentioned in both American and Turkish newspapers. The data have been gathered from 100 Turkish and 54 American news and the user-friendly software application named Sketch Engine has been used in the collection of data. Sketch Engine is a corpus manager and analysis software developed by Lexical Computing Limited since 2003. Its purpose is to enable people studying language behaviour to search large text collections according to complex and linguistically motivated queries. The most important benefit of sketch engine in this current study was to allow me to separate the genres of vocabularies and put them into different tables that provide to compare and contrast the data gathered from the newspapers. The final purpose of the study is to discover the most logical reasons for the similarities and the difference between word selection of the American and Turkish newspapers analysing the tables obtained from the corpus analysis.

The new transition system to secondary education (LKS) with two alternatives: ‘Suffering’ future under ‘Recurring’ system?

Ebru Kara(Supervisor: Inst. Dr. Şakire Erbay Çetinkaya)

For many years, education has emerged in parallel with human being requirements and thus become a pioneering process on social development. Education in Turkey has a long history both before and after the Republic, and it is based on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's principles and revolutions. This development has created a system of testing and measurement that includes a variety of types, and is applied to different levels of education in Turkey. With the compulsory primary school education started in 1869, the system of transition to secondary education has been shaped. The state-controlled examination system has been carried out since 2000 by the Ministry of National Education (MoNE). The transition system for secondary education has been revised many times, and the recent system, Transition from Primary to Secondary Education (TEOG), has currently been changed to Liselere Kayıt Sistemi (LKS), and thus recently this under-researched area has started to become a popular topic for researchers. For this purpose, this seminar will deal with the development of history of education in Turkey, the types of testing, and currently revised LKS.

The Same System, a New Name: A Snapshot of the New University Entrance Exam (YKS)

Burak Ayan(Supervisor: Inst. Dr. Şakire Erbay Çetinkaya)

University entrance system in Turkey has been officially started since 1960s. Before that time some universities used to carry out their own entrance exam and choose their students according to the results, but in time increasing population and demands changed and universities could not satisfy the students’ demands because there were much more candidates than quota each university determines. Thus, as a solution universities introduced a common exam for all candidates. This system was to reduce the number of the candidates, but over the years high school curriculum has been revised, and the university entrance exam was adapted to these new revisions. For this purpose, this seminar will inform the audience about the currently revised university entrance exam, namely Yükseköğrenim Kurumları Sınavı (YKS), in comparison with the earlier higher-stakes tests at higher education level.

Kiraz Salman(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

This study aims to analyze tertiary level EFL learners’ translation errors and actual translation practices in terms of lexical and grammatical levels, to understand their perceptions of translation universals and find out the difficulties EFL learners face while translating. This study also attempts to put forward some possible solutions in order to help tertiary level EFL learners to overcome these grammatical and lexical problems in their translations. The results show that tertiary level EFL learners displayed problems in both lexical and grammatical levels and the majority of these problems may be attributed to L1 transfers. On the other hand, findings also indicated that Turkish EFL learners presented more lexical problems than the grammatical ones and part of these problems can be attributed to the lack of lexical competence.

Integrating Literature into Language Instruction: Let Shakespeare Be Your Teacher!

Ömer Alptuğ Doğan(Supervisor: Inst. Dr. Şakire Erbay Çetinkaya)

Approaches and methods over language teaching have changed many times in years. From 19th century to 1960’s, literary elements were used in language instruction. Grammar translation method was the dominant pedagogy in language classes which allows lecturers to use literary content in their language classes in a simple way. In time, with the arrival of constructivist approach the importance of GTM has decrease, thereby reducing the popularity of integrating literature into language education till 1980’s. However, after 80’s, many studies demonstrated that integrating literature into curriculum of language teaching has many benefits for foreign language learners. Thus, this seminar will inform the audience about the nature of integrating literature into instruction, its benefits and possible risks, and the things practitioners should pay attention to in this integration.

Emotional Intelligence

Gülden Öztürk(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

This presentation is about emotional intelligence. The topic is one of the most interesting topics about human intelligence and behaviours during the last decade. Emotional intelligence is in the concept of social intelligence. Goleman found that an individual’s success is only 20% dependent on IQ abilities which constitute emotional intelligence. It is thought that IQ and EQ are different from each other. He also suggests five major parts of it: self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy and social skills. In addition, there are several factors which help people to develop emotional intelligence: family and environment. People who have emotional intelligence have several certain characteristics: being sensitive, distinguishing between happiness, sadness, love, hate and other emotions. Lastly, the emotional intelligence affects learners' education lives. The aim of schools is to help learners increase their intelligence; however, it seems that schools seem to prioritize IQ rather than EQ. In this presentation, I will touch upon my experiences regarding my own journey of intelligences.

Foreign Language Anxiety across Different Language Skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing

Zübeyde Travaç(Supervisor: Inst. Hasan Sağlamel)

For many years, foreign language anxiety has been investigated as a unique construct. But language consists of four language skills. Therefore, there seems to be a need to approach the investigation of language skills specifically. Foreign language anxiety has usually been to be negatively associated with the performance of learners in language skills. Therefore, it is considered to be a major obstacle in developing a foreign language. This problem is directly related with different language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, which are indispensable for foreign language performance. To this end, the present study will investigate EFL learners’ foreign language anxiety in across different skills. The purpose of this study is to find out the sources of FL anxiety experienced in four language skills, the level of EFL learners’ language anxiety and the most/least anxiety provoking skill/s. In this sense, in order to collect data FLCAS (with 33 items) will be used for language skills separately. The SPSS 16.0 will be used in order to analyze the data. Also, semi-structured interviews will be carried out with students. Finally, the results will be evaluated.

Corpus Analysis of Verbs of Perception in Native (Locness) and Non- Native (Ticle) Corpora

Ecem Pehlivan(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

This linguistic study mainly aims to compare and contrast the verbs of perception by the learners of the English in a tertiary level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting in native (Locness) and non- native (Ticle) corpora. Corpus function in SLA and ELT will be given in the literature review chapter. Consciousness of using Corpus in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Foreign Language Teaching (ELT) is one of the most important techniques. By using corpus, one gets a chance to retain the universal usages of verbs of perception with the help of the authentic texts with lots of concordances which is provided by corpus itself. Therefore, we are able to see the usages of verbs of perception in different forms. To that end, a corpus based methodology will be presented in this linguistic study. The conclusions will be given in the data analysis and result section. The conclusions indicate that Locness (native) corpus involves lots of usages of verbs of perception compares to those of Ticle (non- native), which involves comparatively a few of perception verbs.

Seda Sincer(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Şükrü Özbay)

Lexical bundles are parts of the major points in writing for academic purposes. Particularly, crosslinguistic analysis of lexical bundles in different country and cultures provides that we distinguish some features among them. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the use of lexical bundles among United States, England and Turkey. The purpose of the study is analysed the four-word lexical bundles among these country and is also featured their differences and similarities. For example, lexical bundles in research articles acknowledgments can differ from one country to another. One million word corpus was designed with the help of Sketch Engine that is a corpus tool and divided into two parts that lexical bundles were classified structurally and functionally. At first, I compiled three corporas in order to resolve their differences and similarities well. Then I categorised each of these corporas and I uploaded them to corpus tool in order to get results specific and unusual. The results of this study revealed that the lexical bundles found have structural correlates as well as strong functional features that help to construct discourse in academic writing (Bal, 2010). And the study was concluded by recommendations further studies.

Despite being ruled by a woman, Victorian Era was a painful period for women from all strata; in other words, upper, middle, working class. Without class distinction, the fate of the women living in that era was related to their husbands or fathers. Patriarchal society was adopted. The basic duties of the women in the upper class were to raise their children morally and educate them, to make their husbands happy and to be good at housework, since their living space was limited to just home. In Victorian era, the woman’s place was seen as home. Middle class women, imprisoned in the house, deprived of their right to vote and many others, want to be doctors, teachers or engineers like their husbands. According to the mind-set of that period, women had two options; they would either fall to the street and become a "bad woman" or continue their home lives as a "chaste woman". Women had to comply with the movements called "etiquette" that the patriarchal mentality revealed. Women of the working class worked without pay for their labour, and the harassment they faced in their workplace was ignored. Women who had neither husband nor father earned money by prostitution. In this study, it is aimed to examine the 19 th century status of women and the attitude of Queen Victoria to womanhood.

A Comparative Analysis of Science Fiction and Fantasy

Miraç Uslusoy(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Tuncer Yılmaz)

Fantasy and science fiction are the most popular genres of novel. These two genres are widely confused with each other. However, these genres have their own unique characteristics. Fantasy is an older genre of literature than science fiction and includes stories of supernatural elements as myths, gods and magic. On the other hand, science fiction deals with scenarios that might be possible based on technology. This seminar primarily focuses on the basic characteristics of fantasy and science fiction and the differences between fantasy and science fiction worlds.

Functional Text Analysis: A Guide for Students

Tunahan Turgut(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

This seminar provides a detailed plan for how to analyse English texts from a functional perspective. Generally, texts are analysed in 3 different viewpoints. First, in order to answer the question ‘‘What is the text about’’, the field of a selected text is analysed from the experiential viewpoint. Second, the mode of a selected text is analysed from the textual viewpoint, which helps us to answer the questions about the way a text was, or appears to have been, produced and delivered, interactivity and spontaneity will be the subtopics of mode. Tenor is the last and most complicated section which is analysed from the interpersonal viewpoint, which gives us information about the author of the text.

Context in Translation: Definition, Access and Teamwork

Ebru Karabıçak(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

It is generally agreed that when translating, context is essential. An individual word, such as ‘key’ (to a door? on a keyboard?) cannot be translated in isolation, unless the target language happens to maintain the same ambiguity as the source language. However, there is a lesser degree of consensus on the full extent of what comprises context in the world of translation and who is responsible for providing it. After a brief survey of prior discussion of context in translation, this article derives a five-aspect, translation-specific definition of context from one general description. Section 2 of this paper then describes these five aspects of context, termed co-text, rel-text, chron-text, bi-text, and non-text. Three of these aspects are monolingual: portions of a text (co-text), versions of a text (chron-text), and related text (rel-text). The fourth aspect (bi-text) covers bi-lingual resources. And the fifth aspect (nontext) is beyond text. Section 3 demonstrates, through real-life examples, that each of the five aspects is indeed relevant to the work of a translator and that translators thus need access to all aspects of context. Section 4 asks a broader question: "How can everyone in the multilingual communication industry work together to improve translations through providing and using needed context?" This article is directed at a broad audience that reaches beyond those who conduct research in Translation Studies and includes translators, translation project managers, buyers of translation services, and those responsible for the authoring of texts that will be translated. Hopefully, an increased understanding of the importance of context will help everyone involved in multilingual communication to better cooperate in providing appropriate, efficient, and effective translations.

A Doll’s House: Henrik Ibsen’s Nora as an Angel in the House

Betül Akkuş(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

Throughout the history, the status and role of the woman have remarkably been changed in the different societies at different times. The comparison between the Eve aspect and the Virgin Mary aspect played a dominant role in the status and role of the Victorian woman. Woman in this age was expected to be obedient and dependent to her father or her husband. In such a patriarchal society, the woman was only praised on the condition that she became a loyal servant and devoted person to her family and kept her home as a sacred place. So, the expectation of the society from a woman was to be an ‘angel in her house’. This issue is well reflected by Henrik Ibsen whose play; A Doll’s House has a great impact on the woman question. He tells a story of an ideal, obedient Victorian woman with her sufferings. Accordingly, this study aims to depict the traditional Victorian woman and the term “angel in the house’ as reflected in Henrik Ibsen’s Nora in A Doll’s House.

The Elizabethan Theatre and William Shakespeare’s Othello

Beyza Menteşoğlu(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nazan Yıldız)

The Elizabethan era is one of the most fascinating periods in the history of England. This era which is named after Queen Elizabeth marks England’s getting rid of the darkness of Mediaeval Period. The era is the age of the Renaissance, of new ideas and new thinking. The introduction of the printing press during the Renaissance, one of the greatest tools in increasing knowledge and learning, led to increasing interest in science and inventions. Also, the Renaissance positively affected the England theatre, namely Elizabethan theatre. The Elizabethan theatre was a booming business and the society loved theatre. In this era, the theatre improved both in structure and in context. The inn-keepers increased their profits by allowing plays to be shown on temporary stages erected in the yards of their inns, inn-yards. Later on, purpose-built playhouses and great open theatres were constructed. As to the content, the plays included a variety of incidents; mixing of tears and laughter; gentle and violent passions, time and space used freely – a sense of ongoing life behind the scenes, large ranges and numbers of characters (30 was common) as rich and poor individuals. Elizabethan theatre was rich in language and style too; elegant, ribald, witty, and also prosaic language was used for the development of the characters and the action. William Shakespeare is one of the most important playwrights in Elizabethan period. Shakespeare’s Othello is a story of a jealousy and racial conflict. In this context, this study aims to analyse William Shakespeare’s Othello as an outstanding play of the Elizabethan Theatre.

Media: A Kingdom of Lies?

Emine Dilara Yılmaz(Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Turgut)

This study deals with how media means to help the manipulation of truths and the collapse of the huge historic wall between truths and lies. In today’s world, due to the widespread of media means, people have been so interconnected. All media means, internet and the social media included, allow us to stay connected permanently. This interconnectedness also leads to the use of language so much to hide the extremely unattractive realities, which is called post-truth. Even when people are dealing with objective facts, what is done is a kind of manipulation of statistics, hiding facts or misleading. If post-truth is about people’s sentiments, feelings and perceptions or their “subjective truths,” then what people see are just lies. However, post-truth is not a new phenomenon. In the past, it was called “propaganda,” “manipulation,” or simply “lie.” Post-truth is based on emotions and perceptions and not on facts or data. But the difference of our era is the internet; the quick and easy access to everything we need. Anything can spread so fast on the internet which can be mostly lies. The only way to prevent this is to read and search more to reveal the truth. People should not be vulnerable to lies, so first they need to educate themselves and they need to think more before they believe.

Meltem Bahçekapılı(Supervisor: Asst.Prof. Dr. Karam Nayebpour)

My presentation is about George Eliot’s novel The Mill on The Floss. In this novel, Eliot focuses on the conflict between the central female character Maggie Tulliver and her society represented mainly by Maggie’s brother Tom Tulliver. In my presentation, I will examine the opposing attitudes of the siblings to the same events and situations. Eliot shows us how Maggie’s imagined world is far more different from the real world of her society. There are important contradictions of feeling between Maggie and her society. These contradictions show themselves between the oppressive society and the Maggie’s desires. At the end of my presentation, I will talk about the main aspects of my research on The Mill on The Floss that I plan to analyse during next semester in my thesis project.
