Dear Friends,

A couple of months ago, Rev. Mark preached a sermon on the parable of the rich young man (Matthew 19: 16-24).  You are likely familiar with this passage that ends with Jesus saying, “it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.”  Right around the same time as that sermon, the lottery jackpot had risen to an all-time high of $1.6 billion.  The parable and the jackpot got me thinking about what it would be like for a devoted Christian to win that kind of money.  What would it be like if I won that kind of money?

It’s fun to imagine the thrill of beating the incredible odds and instantly becoming one of the richest people on the planet.  The excitement wouldn’t just be about all the things I could do for myself and my family, but also all the amazing things I could do for others.  I found myself having conversations with God about what He would want me to start doing with this incredible wealth.  We talked about feeding, clothing and housing the poor; renovating our church; developing programs and supporting charities that could help all the needy people that surround us both near and far.

I talked to God quite a bit about this subject.  The conversation eventually turned to how much of this great wealth should I give.  Surely a tithe of 10% from this fortune could support everything we could possibly want to accomplish and more.  But somehow that didn’t seem to be enough.  I found myself asking God how much I should give.  The answer that I

4

Page 5: €¦  · Web viewPlease let Pat Dorio or Martha Murphy if you can attend and what you might bring to share ! The regular Card Making/Bible Study will still meet on Saturday December

received was very surprising, but very clear.  I felt that God was telling me, “all of it”.

If circumstances put me in this positon and God truly wanted everything, I wonder how I would have felt.  Would I have been crestfallen like the young rich man in the parable?  How could God expect that much from me?  Would all the dreams of a completely different future come crashing to Earth and leave me back where I started?  Would I have walked away from Him, keeping my new found wealth… too rich to enter the kingdom of heaven?

What I got from those discussions is that a gift of 10%, 25%, 50% or even more would not have had any meaning to me, and thus, not have had much meaning to Him.  It would have been giving to God out of extreme abundance.  It certainly would not have been any kind of sacrifice.  Maybe God wouldn’t have expected it all, but the point is that He surely would have wanted my gift to be meaningful.

The “first fruits” theme of last year’s stewardship discussion is very much related to “meaningful giving.”  It is about putting God ahead of all the other noise that comes from this incredibly consumer driven world.  It’s not easy.  We have been programmed to need so many “essential” things in our lives, stuff that we cannot live without.  Cell phones, internet, cable, entertainment of all kinds, gadgets, comforts… the list grows larger all the time.  Do we tend to look at what we can give to God before or after we fill our lives with these “essentials?”

God wants good things for all of us.  Meaningful giving forces us to purposely prioritize our lives in an effort to put God first.  It’s not to keep us from all the “fun” stuff that fills our lives, but rather to draw us closer to Him.  We do not need to be rich to give a meaningful gift.  It is quite the opposite.  Jesus points out the small gift of two copper coins given by the widow in Mark 12: 41-44.

So as we enter this New Year, I ask that you think once again think about “first fruits” and “meaningful giving”.  Prayerfully consider what God is asking of you.

Warmest regards,
