Martha, Dear Martha
By: Jimmy Watson
Martha, as I lay here, dying from a gunshot wound,
I think about the day when our love first bloomed.
As I was looking at you and your beautiful grin,
I had no idea what was about to begin.
Martha, I remember our first anniversary,
Looking at our boy, laying in the nursery.
I remember the tear that was stuck in your eye,
As you said, “Look, James. That’s our little guy.”
Martha, I remember the day on which I left you,
The war was another thing we just had to get through.
I don’t think I had ever seen you so nervous,
As I grabbed my bag and left for the service.
Martha, dear Martha, now I feel so somber,
In my death, I have become just another number.
Though I’m not coming home, and you may feel weary,
I don’t want you to fret and get all teary.
For I died happy, in this field of sin,
Thinking of you and your beautiful grin.
