A dream which did not come true A LYN fact finding report This was a bright morning of 7 th September 2014 when we, a group of fifteen MayurViharians, decided to walk through the lanes, streets and alleys of the area. The idea was to get a feel of the place where we have been living since years and feel a deep belonging to it. We chose to call it a fact finding mission. Our objective was to measure the green and sanitation quotient of the area stretching from Acharya Niketan to Samachar Apartments including the Nalla over and under the main road across Metro lines. We counted trees, the deserted ones too, and took pictures of the garbage piled across the road, sewages and around the trees along with waterlogged pits. What the team found is a story similar to all other places of the capital of our country – the story of a garbage city. Mayur Vihar has historic significance. The Battle of Patparganj in the year 1803 was fought between the Marathas and the British on a plane level field, a hinterland, where on this side of the Yamuna River only some irrigable field and hamlets existed. Eventually, in this fight, the Britishers won. This allowed them to enter Delhi and henceforth, enter the Pact Britanica from 1803-1857 putting an end to the Maratha patronage for the then kingdom of Delhi. Another saga started in 1911 when Luyten constructed a Delhi for the rulers and Babus. However Luyten and the British rulers’ eyes never reached the other side of the Yamuna River. It remained countryside for them. It was only till post partition, that there was a humongous flow of refugee population coming to Delhi and thousands of them thronged to East Delhi in search of a roof over their heads. The settlement of East Delhi began, with the setting up of the Rehabilitation Ministry by the Government of India that planned colonies and refugee camps as initial relief to that influx, which later turned into irregular workers colonies.

Mayur Vihar, as the name itself suggests ‘the sanctuary (vihar) of the peacock (Mayur)’ is Surrounded by parts of Uttar Pradesh namely NOIDA and Ghaziabad. In the late seventies The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) divided Mayur Vihar into three parts or ‘Phases’. However, many regions in-between these three Phases also serve as a connecting route include villages like Chilla, Dallupura, Patpadgunj, Khichdipur and Mandawali habitated since innumerable years that have been principally marked with a population of people associating with the farming. In the next pages we bring out a visual fact finding report to show the current condition of sanitation and greenery in various localities of Mayur Vihar Phase 1.

We hope this report will fetch attention of our policy makers, civic authorities, elected representatives and the citizens of Mayur Vihar .

Sincerely, Lyn Fact Finding Team 22nd September 2014(Members of the Team : Ajay Tiwary, , kiran Shaheen, Dr Sachdeva Shivani Bhardwaj, Sneh Mohan, Rakhi, Jyotsana, Gaurav, saurabh, Biman Borah, Pooja, Nirdosh Agarwal, Sangita, Prem Prakash)
