Welcome to the first edition of 2015 with a belated wish for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year to you all.I would like to say a couple of thank you’s, firstly I would like to thank Ashley the DJ for the children’s disco. Only 6 children turned up for the Christmas disco and they were quite disappointed thinking they might be sent home or be bored if they stayed, neither happened. Ashley worked very hard to make sure they had a good time dancing, playing games and winning prizes so they went home very happy. Well done.Secondly I would also like to thank Tracy and her family for organizing a New Year ’s Eve bash again this year. It was quite well attended and everyone from the youngest to the oldest had a good night. The buffet was excellent and the sweets were delicious. I had to restrain myself and only have one! The music was great and there were some good raffle prizes. Thank you again to all concerned.A warm welcome to anyone who has just moved into the village and hopefully you will soon settle into our community. You will find lots of useful information in the magazine and important telephone numbers are at the back.P.S. Do look at our new gardening feature which will tell you what you could be doing in your garden this month.

ST LUKE’S CHURCH"What are we hoping for in 2015?" This question was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of his reflections on New Year's Day.A good question for us all, with eleven months still to come.  Perhaps you would like to pass on some thoughts and I could include them in next month's magazine (Angela 01205 480661).COFFEE MORNINGS started on 8 January:  all are welcome.  £1,387.79 was given to St. Luke's in 2014 in return for cuppas, cakes and conversation.  Thank you everyone. We have a good selection of jigsaws for 20p and 50p, as well as plenty of books to while away the hours when it's too cold to be out of doors. PRIZE BINGO before Christmas also added a generous £425.60 to Church funds.  Thank you again.CENTREPOINT in Boston has received several bags of groceries in the New Year from St. Luke's.  Thank you to all the anonymous givers who generously filled two large boxes to overflowing. Our Christingle Service held on 7 December brought in a lot of boxes of coins for the CHILDREN'S SOCIETY.  The total raised was £102.00 which will help disadvantaged children through times of great stress.  We are keen to develop the Church for community use and would welcome any suggestions. Toilets and a proper server are essential. Perhaps we need to remove the pews and improve the heating. What do you think? One of the first tasks which the PCC have decided to undertake is to remove the organ, which has not worked for a number of years, and is too costly to repair. Does this cause you concern? Let us know. We are holding a Community Meeting from 7.00pm – 7.30pm on Wednesday 03 March in the Church, please come along and tell us your views.

The Church is open daily from 9.30am until late afternoon.A coffee morning is held from 10.00am every Thursday.

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2014 The Village of Stickney collected a total of £602.75 in donations for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal which, considering the size of Stickney, is yet another outstanding result. This year we would like to give a special thanks, on behalf of the British Legion, for the house to house collectors Mrs Wilson and her son Chris who each year have helped to increase the amount of Stickney's donations.

KIDDIES CORNERChicken QuesadillasThought we'd try something different this month. These are great for hiding veg and cheap too! The spices are optional if you have fussy kids but most like them so dig them out from the back of your pantry and use them up!

Ingredients (serves 4 children or 2 adults)

2 tortilla wraps (large) 1 tbsp oil 1 skinless chicken breast (cut into strips) 1 onion, sliced 1 red pepper (small), chopped (you can

replace these with other vegetables) 1 yellow pepper (small), chopped 50g cheese (hard cheese), grated 1 tsp mild chilli powder (to taste) 1 tsp cumin, ground 1 tsp coriander, ground garlic (1 clove), crushed

Method1. Heat the oil in a frying pan or wok until hot2. Add the onion and chicken and cook on a high heat for about 3

minutes, turning regularly3. Add the spices and garlic, if using, and continue to stir around for a

couple more minutes4. Add the peppers and cook on a medium heat until the vegetables

have softened (check the chicken is cooked through if your chicken is sliced thickly) - normally around 5 minutes

5. Turn on the grill to high6. Place one of the wraps on a baking sheet and grate about half of the

cheese onto it7. Spread the mixture from the pan evenly on top of it and cover with the

other wrap8. Grate the rest of the cheese on top and place under the grill9. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts10. Remove from the grill and cut into slices, like a pizza (pizza wheels

cut them up well!)11. Serve with chopped tomato salsa

Gardening tips for February!

Welcome to what I hope is the first of a long series of gardening columns. I hope everyone will glean at least some piece of inspiration from these monthly suggestions.

Winter is a difficult time for gardeners and plants alike. There is little growth that we can see and we have to take it on good faith that occurrences such as frost (thinning out pest populations and turning our sticky clay to a more workable texture), and rain (topping up the natural soil reservoirs and of course our water butts) are creating conditions which we can exploit to our advantage later in the growing season.

We are very much reliant on the weather this month as to how much we can do outdoors. If possible we could prepare the soil for spring sowing and planting. A good sunny afternoon would be ideal for seasonal fruit pruning on, for example, the late fruiting raspberry canes - these can be cut down to about three inches above ground. Time spent on planning what to plant and where to site it is well spent as is time spent perusing seed catalogues deciding on which seeds and plants to order.

So there is plenty that we as gardeners can be thinking about as we prepare for the new growing season. For the moment though a suggested (and by no means exhaustive) checklist for the month might be useful.1) Chit some potato tubers in shallow boxes or containers to encourage the shoots to sprout from the ' eyes' which can be identified by looking for little white spots at one end of the tuber. Egg boxes are useful if you are only chitting a few tubers. Place the boxes in a position which is frost free, well lit, but out of direct sunlight.2) Warm up a small area of the garden with heavy duty clear polythene to create good soil conditions for early sowing and planting.3) Start off shallots and onion sets in small pots or larger modules, using a good peat free compost, and prepare outdoor sites for their eventual sowing.4) Clean cloches of the build-up of algae over the winter months to maximise their effectiveness and site some in parts of the garden you want as early seedbeds.5) Force rhubarb by mulching some of the crowns and covering them with large inverted boxes or special forcing pots - I use old coal scuttles. It is worth making a note of which ones you are forcing as you will not want to force the same crowns in successive years.6) If you have strawberries you could cover a row or two with cloches to advance flowering. If you have a greenhouse put three plants into a hanging basket and hang from the roof. I have had strawberries as early as late April using this method.7) Start thinking about which tomato plants you want to grow - I discovered Tigerella last year and will certainly be growing some this year.

Well I think that's enough to be getting on with! As an old gardening friend of mine used to say "When all's said and done, there is more said than done".

Happy Gardening.

British Heart Foundation

My name is Sam Wooding, you may know my Mum, Linda, who owns the post office. Some of you may also remember my Dad, Gary, who sadly passed away15 years ago during the fourth operation on his heart. I have also had heart surgery and will have to have another operation within the next 5 to 10 years.

As a thank you to the British Heart Foundation (BHF) I am doing the London Marathon on 26 April, if you would like to sponsor me then the form will be available in the village shop. On 14 February, Valentine’s Day, we are holding a Prize Bingo - doors open 6.30pm eyes down 7.30pm - hope to see as many people there as possible. There will also be a Raffle drawn at the bingo, the prizes will include a food hamper, a meat voucher and a cuddly toy, tickets will cost 50p per strip and further details can be found in the shop. Finally there is a ‘donation pot’ in the shop for anyone who would like to give a donation to help me reach my goal and raise £1,500.00 for the British Heart Foundation.

Thank you, in advance, for your support and I will let you know how much is raised

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON THURSDAY 04 DECEMBER

Present: Cllrs Cash, Hood, Wolverson, Edwards and Bolland (Chairman) and two members of the public. One resident requested an apology for information put it the Parish News stating that her husband was the secretary and treasurer of the Residents Association, this is not the case – the apology was given for the misunderstanding of the report given at the November meeting

Apologies: Cllr Wylka

Reports From Representatives On Outside BodiesThere was no Police report received but theses should resume in the New Year.

Planning Applications Received S/169/02083/14 - Mr M Gosling - Conversion of, extensions and alterations to existing house to provide 2 dwellings and to include the provision of 2 dormer windows on the rear elevation at Honeysuckle Cottage, Main Road – Observations were made:Is there adequate parking - only one space available per property? The mock door at the front of the property could confuse emergency services that may, at some time, need to enter the property. Work has started on the property although it is stated that it has not. Each property only has one exit - through the kitchen, the room where a fire is most likely to be. The bathroom opens directly into the kitchen and has no other means of ventilation, if the rear door is open the bathroom door cannot be opened.

Planning DecisionsS/169/01442/14 - Mr & Mrs Bradshaw - Erection of 1 detached house on the site of existing mobile home and sheds on site which are to be removed to include provision of parking at Charnwood, West Fen Lane - REFUSED

To Discuss The Settlement Proposals Development Plan DocumentThe documents were looked at by the Parish Council and it was resolved to ask if linear development could be considered throughout the Main Road. To reconsider a reduction of the number of properties to be built on the sites ‘suitable’ for development. To ask that an unshaded area adjacent to STK306 and STK 305 be included in the ‘not suitable for development’ plan. This is a pre-consultation document which will be out for full consultation sometime in 2015.

Repairs Street light 59 at Main Road is in all day. Pot hole outside Richelieu Cottage, Main Road.Hole in grass verge at School Close. The road surface around the roundabout is badly breaking up. The road outside The Warren, Pinfold Lane has not been repaired properly and is breaking up again. Branches are growing into the BT lines at Horbling Lane. Can a tree be cut down outside Greyleas at Horbling Lane due to the leaves making the footway slippery? These items will be reported to LCC.

An e-mail has been received from Midville, Eastville and New Leake Group Parish Council asking for support in their endeavours to get Fodderdyke Bank improved. It was resolved that support be given as many Stickney residents use this road to travel to Skegness.ANY POT HOLES OR STREET LIGHTS IN ALL DAY OR OUT AT NIGHT SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE PARISH COUNCIL CLERK.

To Approve The Siting And Style Of The Proposed New Bus StopsAn email has been received from LCC with the proposed stops, raised stops and timetable poles listed. It was resolved that these are acceptable for Stickney.
