ST LUKE’S CHURCHCHRISTIAN AID WEEK – 10th -16th May - saw many churches involved in different ways of fund raising, and this year much is needed to help with restorative work among the people of Nepal after the terrible destruction caused by the recent earthquakes.  Here in St. Luke's the COPPER PATH and SILVER CROSS raised £146.92p, the raffle, tombola, cakes and other donations raised £170.86, and the Friday bingo collection raised £15.94, making a grand total of £333.72 for Christian Aid.  Well done!Thank you to all who joined us for our special Saturday event and passed on coins and donations.

The PRIZE BINGO held on the first Spring holiday contributed £309.70 to St. Luke's funds, and we are already collecting prizes for the BINGO on the late Spring holiday, MONDAY 25 MAY at 7.30pm in Stickney Youth Centre.  Thank you for your support which is very encouraging.

Our friends "THE MEN IN LYCRA" are scheduled to pay us a visit on their bikes in July.  We will be holding another PRIZE BINGO on SATURDAY 27 JUNE at 7.30pm in the Youth Centre to contribute towards their fund raising for CANCER RESEARCH UK. Please pass on any prizes you can towards these events to Bev Gosling, Angela Brady or Doreen Cooley, or ring one of our contact numbers if you would like us to call and collect.

Through May and June the beauty of our villages and countryside can be breath-taking;  so many rich colours of gardens, hedgerows, woodland and fields. It's all a gift we can freely enjoy, and occasionally pause to say ............. "thank you".

Gardening tips for June!June for the gardener is something of a watershed - it's the end of spring and the beginning of summer. So while we may still be able to take the last opportunity to sow seeds of runner beans and main crop carrots, we can now look forward to our first harvest of new potatoes, beetroot, onions, salads and of course, strawberries: June sees the longest day and rising temperatures - but beware of slugs and snails, insects and other pests which thrive in our fresh vegetables.

Let us think of some of the jobs we can be getting on with to extend the growing (and harvesting) season as long as possible:

1. Try a modern variety of turnip. They are fast growing and will be ready to eat six or so weeks after sowing. The roots will not be very big, but will be at their sweetest2. If you planted cauliflowers in March, they should be ready for picking during June. It's worthwhile folding the long leaves over heads to keep them white. Try to catch them while the heads are firm, before they bolt.3. You can continue to sow beetroot in June. These should be ready at the end of September and you can extend the growing season by sowing right up to the end of the month.4. Sow main crop carrots (I prefer Autumn King). They will be ready to harvest, again, in September or October.5. Courgettes and marrows. If you don't have plants which you raised from seeds, you can sow seeds directly outside now that the soil has warmed up thoroughly. I always sow two seeds together and once they've germinated you can remove the weaker of the two. Leave plenty of space between the plants as they spread widely and need a lot of room. I'm looking forward to using my new 'Spiralizer' on this crop, turning them into spaghetti like strips.6. French beans are ready for a second sowing this month. Sow seeds in staggered rows to a depth of 2" and at intervals of 6" to 9". As with all new sown seeds, keep them well watered.7. Sow lettuce seeds in situ and thin them out if the seedlings are too crowded. Lettuce seeds don't like high temperatures and germination may be hindered, so I find it's best to sow at the end of the day when the soil is cooling down.8. Finally, sow a couple more batches of spring onion seeds this month to make sure you have a continuous supply during the autumn.

So, there's so much to do and so little time to do it. At such times it is as well to keep Rudyard Kipling's wise words to the fore: 'Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made, By singing - "Oh, how beautiful" and sitting in the shade'.

Enjoy your gardening and rejoice in your successes and don't get too depressed with your failures. Happy Gardening!

Spilsby Neighbourhood Policing TeamNow that Spring/Summer is upon us, this a time where all the gardening tools are back out of the shed/garage and being used more often. These are items that could quite easily be taken by passing motorists or the opportunist thief, should they be left on view in the garden or on the road side. Tools, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, strimmers, lawn mowers are all valuable items. Your local Neighbourhood Policing Team can provide you with Security Marking Packs and information to assist in making it more difficult and less appealing to the thief. Feel free to call using the numbers on the back of the Stickney News. The numbers for the Team members are there for Support relating to crime Prevention, Home Security and Advice regarding local Policing issues. The numbers are not for reporting incidents. For all “Non Urgent” incidents ring “101” and all “Urgent” Incidents “999”. Alternatively you can report to Crime Stoppers anonymously on:

Also incidents regarding Fraud, such as Scams, cons, cheat, swindle, hoodwink, internet crime, etc can be reported via Action Fraud on:

The Lincolnshire Police Website has regular up to date information regarding all areas. PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S ANNUAL REPORT TO PARISHIONERS

I would like to welcome you all to the Stickney Annual Parish Meeting. Welcome to the new Parish Councillors, Lucy Edwards, Lisa Spring, Jean Littlewood, Tony Lewis and Brian Wood and to the new District Councillors, Tom Ashton and Neil Jones.

Now for the last year - It has been a quiet year this year as there have been no new projects by the council so there is not a lot to report.

The Parish Council were going to try and refurbish the war memorial in line with the rest of the country. Unfortunately quotes requested were not received – this prevented applying for a grant, and, although the Parish Council is responsible for maintaining the war memorial it is sited on church land and a faculty is required before any work can be carried out. Information required for the faculty was not initially given by the stone mason, but since the decision has been made not to apply for a grant the stone mason has not been asked again for the details.

The Parish Council did distribute poppy seeds to every household in the parish, these were to be planted and blooming for 04 August to mark the beginning of the Great War. There were some lovely displays round the village. Thank you to Brian Gray for supplying and packaging the seeds on behalf of the Parish council.

The Parish Council are considering adding another piece of play equipment to the play area. When it has been decided what items of equipment will fit in the space available a consultation will take place. Grants will be applied for following the consultation.

The Parish Council became somewhat diminished over the last year. Two Councillors resigned for personal reasons, two resigned because of work commitments, one resigned as she was standing for the District Council and sadly one died. I would like to thank all of them for their commitment and hard work during their time on the Parish Council, especially Cllr Wylka who served the parish since 01 May 1995, 20 years. Tonight it is Councillor Hood’s last meeting. He has been the deputy Chairman of the Parish Council for a few years giving great support to both myself and fellow Councillors. He is our computer expert he will be greatly missed but he has assured me that he will help out with computer matters when required. Thank you very much. I would also like to thank the various people who work for the council. Thank you to Ken Tempest who has done an excellent job as Litter picker, without his work the village would not be as tidy as it is. A big thank you to Mr Dear, who keeps the play area and the Remembrance Garden in such excellent order, and finally thank you to Shaun and his team for their work in the cemetery. I should also thank George Bolland who voluntarily checks the equipment in the play area each and empties the bins, keeping the play area clean for families to use.

The Parish council are still producing the monthly Stickney News which is delivered to every household in Stickney. It is hoped everyone looks at it to find

Page 19: parishes.lincolnshire.gov.ukparishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/128/Parish_Mag…  · Web viewThe Jubilee Committee would also like to thank Harry and Isabel for bringing something

out what is going on in the village, hopefully it has proved to be a positive thing for groups who rely on fund-raising and for groups who want to encourage more members.

The delivery of the magazine relies on the volunteers who kindly deliver them on behalf of the Parish Council, for this I would like to thank Coral Elderfield, Julie Dawson, Peter Hood, Nick Gosling, Linda Wooding, George Bolland with Mollyann and Elliemae, and Kim Pennells-Clark.The Parish Council Jubilee Committee is working hard at the moment to organise a Midsummer Festival at the William Lovell Academy in July. Fund raising events are taking place to help make this a cheap day out for all the family. The support at the fund raising events this year has been wonderful and this encourages the Committee for other events. I must thank everyone for the support given to this committee and its work in any way, however big or small it is appreciated.

Finally I would like to give a big thank you Mrs. Arnold the clerk who works unstintingly on behalf of the Parish Council, myself and the village
