Exalted Ruler’s Message By: Dan Rhoads

We had a successful September and October is shaping up to be another busy month at Casas Adobes Lodge.

We held a very successful First Responders Appreciation Dinner on September 11. It was very well attended and could not have been as successful as it was without our volunteers help.

Thank you to the following: Mike Comerford for cooking the delicious steaks; Alan Sparacino, Kathy Aitchison, PER Marv Thompson, Sherry Lasuzzo, Kellie Smith, Phil Frazier, Sue Johnson, Treasurer Brian Taylor, Judy, Joe & Sharon Miller for helping in the kitchen and serving, and Trustee Charlie White for his stellar service behind the bar. A special thanks to Don & Kay Baker for the decorations; PER Don Baker for leading the Pledge of Allegianceand PER Mike Comerford for delivering the prayer. PDDGER Ira Cohen coordinated and emceed the evening and secured our guest speaker, KOLD News Anchor Dan Marries. Mr. Marries gave an excellent keynote speech. On Wednesday October 1 District Deputy Jack Baillargeon, visited our Lodge. He met with the officers and committee chair in the afternoon and witnessed the Lodge meeting that evening. On Saturday October 18 we will be having an Oktoberfest at the Lodge. South District Vice President David Quackenbush will be in attendance. It should be a great time with great homemade food.

Can you feel the excitement? Football season is in full swing and the NASCAR finals are in progress. Stop by the Lodge Social Quarters and watch your favorite team or racer and enjoy the fellowship of our members. I hear there are some Sunday food specials too..I hope to see you all around the Lodge soon

Hi to all of our Elk`s Social Quarters friends and patrons. The First Wednesday in October, 10/1/14 is another “Sportswear Wednesday”. This means if you show up sporting a team jersey or hat or other sports paraphernalia/Memorabilia On the 1st of October and you will receive a quarter off any drink in the bar for the whole time in the social quarters. This goes for all month on Wednesdays. A 25 cent discount is also available every Tuesday this month if you show up in your Work Wear. (It must proudly display where you work) Scooter Entertainment is providing “Bar Stool Karaoke” at 6:00 pm until 9pm, on Friday the 3rd and we are going to have Italian Sausage Sandwiches with homemade sauce. Every Friday night in October, Scooter Entertainment will be offering up your favorite tunes to sing to in your best Karaoke Style, from 6pm till 9pm. So, come on in and meet our entertainment host and newly initiated Casas Adobes Lodge 2663 Elk Member. On Burger Night, Thursday, October 2nd we`ll feed the Veterans from the Blind Rehab Unit of our Southern Az. Healthcare Facility first, and then it`s your turn to eat up on some great (juicy and delicious) Burgers. We only serve Top Sirloin. Joe Miller, our Public Relations Chairman, will continue to update you on events occurring at the Lodge by each Saturday night before each new week. If you`re not on his email list you are missing out, so be sure and send him your email address at: [email protected] . The Weekly Blast and Flyers and an electronic version of our Monarch Newsletter can be yours for the asking. Those of you who have changed your email address need to update us also. Again, the House Committee wants to thank all of our volunteers who are helping us during our events (like Veteran`s Hamburger Night), however we still desperately need volunteers to help our food events run smoothly, especially volunteers for Taco Monday’s and Burgers on Thursday’s. I know this is a familiar plea for assistance and I am repeating myself but the whole of our Elk`s Lodge functions and charities depend on you. Volunteer service is actually easy yet fulfilling when enough people choose to help out. This does not need to be just for serving there are many things that need to be done such as shopping or preparing items ahead of time, or even being willing to lend a hand and clean up or do dishes after a busy night when the ones who cooked and served are worn out and would like a bite to eat themselves. So if there is anything no matter how small you are willing to do for the lodge please let Charlie know and we will endeavor to accommodate you. Thanks, Charlie W.

As summer slowly slips away, we know the cooler weather is just around the corner, but more importantly a season of camp outs are coming up.

Our monthly meetings will resume, the first one being Oct. 1 st. Of course, that’s where you’ll get the details on future campouts.

In November we’ll get together at Picacho Peak. The December Christmas campout will be at DeAnza RV Resort in Amado. January will be at 11 Mile Corner

and February we’ll go up to Apache Junction. We are in need of wagon masters for that one.

I am writing this article from Brownhills RV Sales in Newark,England. The dealership is having one of those “promotional” weekends, similar to the one we all went to at Lazy Daze a few years ago. Yes, that’s right. We are camping with our friends here. Just can’t get enough! The motorhomes here are very different from what we’re used to. Much, much smaller but very efficient.

I’m sure everyone is looking forward to seeing each other again and getting caught up on the adventures of the summer. See you at the October meeting!

Exalted Ruler Dan Rhoads poses with KOLD Television evening news anchor Dan Marries at the Firefighters Appreciation dinner on Sept. 11. Dan spoke following the steak dinner that was attended by approximately 50 members and guests. Nine firefighters from the Northwest Fire Station were able to come. Several were called out but were able to return to enjoy their meal.

Dan Marries was a volunteer firefighter in Colorado following his father’s tradition who was also a firefighter. He cited several experiences he had during that time.

This was the second year a speaker from the local CBS television affiliate was invited to speak at the recognition dinner. Evening news anchor Scott Kilbury spoke two years ago.

Arizona Elks Major Projects October…..

September was a big month for events pertaining to AEMP. Let’s begin with the Arizona Elks Association State Golf Tournament. The proceeds from this statewide sporting event go to support the programs of the Arizona Elks Major Projects. Show Low Elks Lodge was the host of this year’s event and the Golf Committee lead by Gregg Boyce with Major Projects Board President Jerry Grimes and supported by Lodges members was a great success!

Over 100 Elks and guests from Arizona’s four corners took part in the two-day event. The golf courses were in excellent shape and the weather was flat out beautiful. Tucson #385 sent a great group of golfers in support of the Major Project. AEA State President Jimmy Davis thanked the Tucson Lodge members for supporting the Golf Tournament and the work of the Arizona Elks Major Projects.

On Saturday evening September 13th, 60 Arizona Elks attended the Arizona Diamondback baseball game verses the San Diego Padres. Phoenix Lodge #335 led the way by having 12 of their members and guests attend the Game. Major Projects Board President Jerry Grimes and Board Secretary Tim Woods were introduced at the ballgame and the work of the Arizona Elks Major Projects was shared to all.

With October comes with it the AEMP Mid-Year Raffle. There is still time for you to send in your raffle tickets in support of the Major Projects. Remember someone will take home a 2014 Jeep Patriot – it might as well be you. Need Raffle Tickets? Call the Arizona Elks Major Projects office and we will send you some. Or visit your local Lodge and your Lodge Secretary or Major Projects Representative will provide you with the tickets you need.

The drawing will be held on Saturday evening, October 25th during the Arizona Elks Association Mid-Year Convention.

RED RIBBON WEEK POST CARDSElks to send 200,000 Post Cards to President Obama

to uphold our Nation’s Drug Laws

Chicago, IL – September 24, 2014: The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of America has the largest all-volunteer drug awareness program in the country. For more than 31 years, the Elks have been providing educational materials to children, parents and schools at no cost.

Each year in October, the Elks honor the memory of slain DEA Special Agent Enrique S. Camerena with a Red Ribbon Campaign. Special Agent Camerena was kidnapped, tortured and killed because he was successfully investigating one of the largest drug trafficking organizations in Mexico.

The Elks Drug Awareness Program has launched a national campaign to ask our leaders in Washington, D.C. to uphold our nation’s drug laws and to remind everyone, especially our youth, of the dangers of using any illicit drug.

The Elks are asking for President Obama’s help to send a message that drugs are dangerous; that drug use leads to drug addiction; and that a hopeful future is one free of addiction.

Our goal is to have 200,000 Red Ribbon Week posts cards in the mail by October 15, 2014.
