Mapping Excerises – The Royal Easter Show 2011Review the map above and respond to each of the following questions. You will need to remember the theory that we have studied in class about how Geographers use maps.

1. Every good map includes BOLTS. What does BOLTS stand for?

2. What is missing from this map?

3. Olympic Park Railway Station is 200m in length. You now have all the information necessary to correct the missing part of BOLTS for this map. You will need this scale for later questions.

Grid references help us to locate specific areas within a map. To read a grid reference you always go across before you go up. It may help you to remember to “Crawl before you walk”.

4. Review the map and identify what is located at each of the following grid references:-

a. O14b. C17c. Q9d. I4e. T13

5. Locate each of the following places on the map and record their grid reference.

a. World Bazaarb. Fashion and Stylec. Showbag Halld. Pony Ridese. Big Top Ampitheatre

6. The purpose of the Royal Easter Show Map is to help visitors find their way around the park. Thus is it is important to note which direction is marked NORTH. Use the compass direction on the map to correctly identify the direction of the following:-

A legend is used to minimize the amount of writing needed on the map. It provides a checklist by using symbols for different landmarks. Use the legend presented on the bottom of the map to respond to each of the following questions.

7. How many are there of each of the following landmarks in the Royal Easter Showground:-

8. What is the difference between the Chemist and First Aid symbols?

9. There are two walking routes that are identified on the map using symbols, what are both of these routes?

10. If you need help whilst you are at the Easter show, identify FOUR symbols on the map that will show you where to go?

Geographers also use maps to calculate distances. If it is a straight line that you are measuring the distance of, simply use your ruler. However, sometimes the distances we need to measure are curved, or irregular in shape. If this is the case, geographers will use string to calculate the distance.

Review the map above and the scale that you included on the map, to calculate the following distances.
