biometric data on doctor-patient interactions and patient activity levels. The proposal includes a two-phase approach. First to conduct structured focus groups with cardiologists drawn from Westchester Medical Center exploring their views on the value and use of biometric data in the treatment setting, and then to conduct a randomized study of the content of office visits with patients for whom biometric activity data is available. Finally, the proposal centers on an analysis of how doctor-patient interactions affects compliance to prescribed exercise as monitored via activity tracking technology. My responsibilities are shared with Drs. Rosen and Litman. As a collaborator on this grant I would have played a role in subject recruitment, study design and manuscript writing and editing. In addition, I help to design and implement the testing protocol. This grant was not funded.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a long-term participation in an exercise program targeting the impaired movement control and active limitations seen in patients with PD by comparing clinically and demographically similar self-selected groups, to investigate longitudinal changes in the three ICF domains (body functions, activity and participation) among individuals with PD over a one year period. My responsibilities will be shared with Drs. States and Salem. As a collaborator on this grant I will play a role in subject recruitment, study design and manuscript writing and editing. In addition, I helped to design and implement the testing protocol. This grant was not funded.

The purpose of this grant was to examine the effects of a 10-week exercise and sensory-based program on fitness and behavior in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This grant was submitted in collaboration with the Occupational Therapy Department and the McCarton School, a private organization that caters to children with Autism. My responsibility on this grant was as a Co-PI. I would be involved in all physiological measures including maximal oxygen consumption, indices of cardiovascular fitness and heart rate variability. In addition, I would be responsible for the design of the exercise program, the program progression and data analysis and write up. Grant Title: Minority Biomedical Research Support (MBRS)Project Title: Which yoga practices, independently or combined, reduce blood pressure most?Principle Investigator(s): Marshall HaginsCo-Investigator(s): Andrew Rundle, David SpiererFunding Agency: NIH

Hagins MH, Rundle A, Spierer DK.

The intention of this investigation was to examine the integration of the elements of yoga practice (e.g., positions, breathing) and its effect on blood pressure as compared to changes in blood pressure produced through the independent effects of these elements. The study was defined as a 12 week, randomized clinical trial of 90 normotensive and prehypertensive participants and employed three intervention arms: 1) an integrated yoga program (physical postures/breath control/meditation); 2) traditional exercise matched in metabolic intensity to the integrated yoga program; and 3) a breath control/meditation program. The proposed research is significant because it was among the first to determine the potential benefits to blood pressure from the independent and combined practice of clearly defined elements of an integrated yoga practice and thereby provide the knowledge needed to design a rigorous randomized clinical trial that can determine the efficacy of yoga on blood pressure. My responsibility, as that of an investigator, was to directly supervise all autonomic and blood pressure measures, development of the energy-matched exercise intervention, and training teachers for the exercise intervention, analysis of autonomic function measures, and assistance with writing and dissemination of results.

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effect of an exercise program on HbA1C and physical parameters in diabetics in the Brooklyn and Manhattan areas. Becky States was the principle investigator from the Division of Physical Therapy of Long Island University and Dr. Richard A. Stein from the Beth Israel Medical Center was also on the project as a mentor. The project period was scheduled from 3/1/2007 thru 2/28/2010, the projected direct costs were $436,980 and the projected indirect costs were $597,779.This grant was not funded.

Grant Title: National Institutes of Health, Support of Competitive Research (SCORE)research continuance award: 1SC3GM088049-01A1.Project Title: Effectiveness of Yoga on Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Patients with Pre and Stage I Hypertension Principle Investigator(s): Marshall HaginsCo-Investigator(s): David SpiererFunding Agency: NIH

Hagins M, Spierer DK.

The proposed study will compare a well-defined and integrated yoga practice (postures/breath control/meditation) to a single element of that practice (yoga postures (asana)) in reducing hypertension. The expected outcomes include data on the effects of yoga on ambulatory blood pressure, psychosocial stress, and the autonomic system in individuals with pre and Stage I hypertension. The information gained in this study will have a positive impact by providing critical preliminary and feasibility data to support a larger multi-ethnic randomized clinical trial on the effects of yoga on individuals with hypertension. I am considered a collaborator or “key personnel” on this project. My role would include measuring autonomic nervous system function in subjects before and after yoga and I would be assisting the PI (Dr. Marshall Hagins) in implementing conventional exercise bouts to match energy expended in the yoga program.

The purpose of this study was to further investigate the effect of fitness in people with Parkinson’s disease. To date 35 subjects have enrolled in the study with approximately 10 control subjects. On average the program was attended by 15 subjects two-times per week. Post program data was collected at the end of the fall semester. I am a co-principle investigator on this project that is a collaborative effort with Dr. Rebecca States from the Division of Physical Therapy and the Brooklyn Parkinson’s Group. The proposal was funded in the summer of 2009 with a total cost of $4,500.

The purpose of this study was to further investigate the effect of fitness as compared to that of dance in people with Parkinson’s disease. To date 35 subjects have enrolled in the study with approximately 10 control subjects. On average the program was attended by 15 subjects two-times per week. Post program data was collected at the end of the fall semester. A manuscript was submitted to the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy 6/4/10. My role was as a co-PI investigator on this project that is a collaborative effort with Dr. Rebecca States from the Division of Physical Therapy Department and the Brooklyn Parkinsons Group. The proposal was funded in the summer of 2009 with a total cost of $10,000.

The study proposed to 1) determine the reliability of the Actical and Actiheart devices through a variety of functional tasks (treadmill walking, card playing, sweeping, weight lifting); 2) determine the validity of the Actical and Actiheart devices relative to a measurement of indirect calorimetry; and 3) compare the reliability and validity of the Actical and Actiheart devices. Twenty-seven subjects enrolled in the study. I was the principle investigator on this project and as

The purpose of this study is to develop, implement, and evaluate a group exercise program for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) that can be incorporated into a community fitness facility and that can integrate participants with PD into the mainstream exercise activities at the facility. To date 26 subjects have enrolled in the study. Ten subjects were tested and trained during summer 2008. Another 16 subjects are enrolled for the fall 2008 program. A manuscript was submitted to the Journal of Neurological Physical Therapy in August 2010. My role was as the co-PI on this project that is a collaborative effort with Becky States from the Division of Physical Therapy and the Brooklyn Parkinsons Group.
