At Home on the Street: People, Poverty, and a Hidden Culture of Homelessness

“A revelation.... Wasserman and Clair offer a new way of lookingat the diverse people living on the extreme margins of our

society. Their rich ethnography confronts popular conceptions ofhomeless people and situates street homelessness as a choice distinctfrom living in shelters. Sociologists, service providers, and policy-makers—not to mention students of homelessness and poverty—need to read this.” —Michael Rowe

“A powerful new look at homelessness that shows how the freedomsand community of the street can outweigh the constraints and dan-gers of life in shelters.” —Kathy Charmaz

In their compelling examination of what it means to be truly athome on the street, Jason Wasserman and Jeffrey Clair arguethat programs and policies addressing homeless people toooften serve only to alienate them.

Wasserman and Clair delve into the complex realities ofhomelessness to paint a gripping picture of individuals—notcases or pathologies—living on the street and of their strategiesfor daily survival. By exploring the private spaces that thosewho are homeless create for themselves, as well as their prevail-ing social mores, the authors explain how well-intentioned poli-cies and programs often only widen the gap between the indi-gent and mainstream society. The result is an unvarnished lookat the culture of long-term homelessness and a fresh approachto reaching this resurgent population.

Dorm Room Dealers: Drugs and the Privileges of Race and Class

“O utstanding.... The authors uncover a world of drug dealingfar removed from violent street-corner slinging and as

entwined in the college experience as all-nighters and keg parties.Providing unparalleled insight into the war on drugs and an all-but-ignored deviant world, this book is as entertaining to read as itis educational.” —Peter Moskos

“An excellent study that finally puts the race/class-biased War onDrugs into perspective.” —William J. Chambliss

“Compellingly demonstrates that college drug dealers, who are most-ly white and middle-class, are not subject to the same constraints astypical, street-level dealers.” —Heith Copes

Why do affluent, upwardly mobile college students—whohave everything to lose and little to gain—choose to selldrugs? Why do law enforcement officers largely overlookdrug dealing on college campuses?

With rich, lively details, A. Rafik Mohamed and ErikFritsvold deliver unprecedented insight into the world ofcollege drug dealers—and offer an important corrective tothe traditional distorted view of the US drug trade as prima-rily involving poor minorities. Drawing on six years of field-work at a predominately white private university, theirexceptional ethnography skillfully explores issues ofdeviance, race, and stratification in the US war on drugs.

“H ighly recommended for academic libraries.”—Kristen Whitehair, Multicultural Review

“Concise and to the point.... A worthy contribution toward a soci-ology of immigration that critically analyzes the complex politics ofcontemporary racialization.” —Lisa Sun-Hee Park

With rising numbers of immigrants of color in the UnitedStates, sheer demographic change has long promised—falsely,it now seems—to solve the “race problem.” Directly connect-ing the issues of race relations and immigrant incorporation,Beth Merenstein sheds light on what the changing contours ofthe US’s racial and ethnic makeup mean for our dearly heldconcept of “equal opportunity for all.”

Forced Out: Older Workers Confront Job Loss

“O ffering new insights, this book does a good job of usingworkers’ personal stories to extract the meaning of events

related to a mass layoff.” —David W. Wright

What happens to long-term employees when their jobs areunexpectedly eliminated? In this richly detailed study of amajor layoff and its aftermath, Kenneth Root and RosemariePark address head-on the ramifications of job loss for olderworkers.

The authors follow the experiences of 173 factory workers—from first thoughts on being forced out of work to reflectionsseveral years later. Retraining, age discrimination, and theoccasional, if unanticipated, benefits of job loss are among themany issues considered. The result is a wide-ranging andthoughtful look at both the universal issues facing downsizedemployees and the unique challenges of being an older workerinvoluntarily out of work.

Race, Gender, and the Labor Market:Inequalities at Work

“A highly compelling and important study…. Theoreticallyprovocative and meticulously researched, it will make a last-

ing contribution to our understanding of work-based inequality.”—Matt Huffman

“Essential…. Kaufman’s big-picture analysis sheds much neededlight on the ‘how’ of workplace inequality.” —Julie Kmec

Women and minorities have entered higher-paying occupa-tions, but their overall earnings still lag behind those of whitemen. Why? Looking nationwide at workers across all employ-ment levels and occupations, Robert Kaufman examines theunexpected ways that prejudice and workplace discriminationcontinue to plague the labor market.

Kaufman probes the mechanisms by which race and sexgroups are sorted into “appropriate” jobs, showing how theresulting segregation undercuts earnings. He also uses aninnovative integration of race-sex queuing and segmented-market theories to show how economic and social contextsshape these processes. His authoritative analysis reveals howrace, sex, stereotyping, and devaluation interact to createearnings disparities, shedding new light on a vicious cyclethat continues to leave women and minorities behind.

Robert L. Kaufman is professor of sociology at TempleUniversity.

Mexican Migration and the U.S. Economic Crisis: A Transnational Perspective

H ow has the US economic crisis that erupted in 2007 affectedflows of Mexican migrants to and from the United States?

In this follow-up to Mayan Journeys, the authors provide ampleevidence that the lack of assured jobs in the US—and not con-cerns with tougher border enforcement—is driving decisionsto postpone (though not permanently forgo) migration. Theyalso show that neither the economic crisis nor workplace raidsare inducing migrants already in the US to return home.

Drawing on responses to more than 1,000 surveys and some500 hours of in-depth interviews in both the Yucatán and theUS, the authors document the economic coping strategies ofmigrants and their families, how migrant workers navigate theUS job market, and how health, education, and communityparticipation are being shaped by the economic crisis. Agroundbreaking chapter explores how a “youth culture ofmigration” develops in a migrant sending community.

Wayne A. Cornelius, David Fitzgerald, JorgeHernández-Díaz, and Scott Borger, editors

T his volume provides a vivid portrait ofa transnational migrant community

anchored in both the remote Mixtecaregion of Oaxaca and the San Diego met-ropolitan area.

Drawing on surveysand interviews withmigrants and potentialmigrants conducted bya binational researchteam in 2007–2008, thecontributors show howthe Oaxaca-based andthe California-basednatives of the town of San MiguelTlacotepec have built parallel communi-ties separated by an increasingly fortifiedinternational border. Their findings offernew insights on a range of vital issues inUS immigration policy, including the effi-cacy and impact of border enforcement, how undocumented status affects healthand education outcomes, and how mod-ern telecommunications are shapingtransborder migrant networks.

Judging Victims: Why We StigmatizeSurvivors, and How They Reclaim Respect

“S ubtle, yet accessible and a pleasure to read. Dunn gives us asophisticated new framework for thinking about victims of

violence and fresh insight into why our larger culture calls theirclaims—and the victims’ own morality—into question.” —Joel Best

“An important book.... Dunn addresses significant practical ques-tions that are also theoretically intriguing in this empirical explo-ration of the cultural category of ‘victim.’ ” —Donileen Loseke

“Why didn’t she resist?” “Why is he telling us only now?”“Why can’t she move on?” Unpacking the questions that castvictims as deviants, Jennifer Dunn critically examines whywe stigmatize survivors of rape, battering, incest, and clergyabuse—and how they reclaim their identities.

Dunn explores the shifting perceptions over time of victimsas blameworthy, blameless, pathetic, or heroic figures. She alsolinks those images to their real-world consequences, demon-strating that they dominate the ways in which people thinkabout intimate violence and individual responsibility. Heranalysis cuts to the core of fundamental issues at the center ofdebates about crime and deviance, victimization, and socialproblems.

What Is Constructionism? Navigating Its Use in Sociology

“C learly and compellingly written.... This is a fine overview ofdifferent approaches to constructionism. Unlike so many theo-

rists, Harris is kind to his reader, aiming to inform, not to obfuscate. He is to be congratulated for his effort.” —Jaber Gubrium

Has constructionism become a victim of its own success?Scott Harris argues that, as more scholars adopt theapproach, its key concepts are being used in differing andeven contradictory ways—thus undercutting the vitality ofits application as a research tool. To help clear the waters, hecritically examines current debates and delivers a powerfulcall to launch a renewed constructionism.

Harris traces how constructionism has evolved into two dis-tinct perspectives—interpretative and objective—as he delvesinto timely topics such as social inequality, marital equality, and family diversity. He also evaluates each perspective’sstrengths, as well as its unique contributions. Sharpened defi-nitions of the goals and vocabulary of both schools of thought,he demonstrates, give us a more lucid understanding of thepressing social issues of our time.

Sentencing Guidelines: Lessons from Pennsylvania

“A n important case study on sentencing guidelines that every-one concerned with equal justice under law must read....

Highly recommended.” —Choice

“A fascinating story of one state’s struggle to craft both meaningfuland politically palatable sentencing guidelines. The authors provide acomprehensive and theoretically informed evaluation of the complexissues involved. The result is essential reading for anyone interestedin sentencing reforms and their impact.” —Cassia Spohn

Sentencing guidelines, adopted by many states in recentdecades, are intended to eliminate the impact of bias basedon factors ranging from a criminal’s ethnicity or gender tothe county in which he or she was convicted. But have theseguidelines achieved their goal of “fair punishment”? Andhow do the concerns of local courts shape sentencing underguidelines? In this comprehensive examination of the devel-opment, reform, and application of sentencing guidelines inone of the first states to employ them, John Kramer andJeffery Ulmer offer a nuanced analysis of the complexitiesinvolved in administering justice.

John H. Kramer is professor of sociology and crime, law,and justice at Pennsylvania State University. Jeffery T. Ulmeris associate professor of sociology and crime, law, and justiceat Pennsylvania State University.

When Killing Is a CrimeTony Waters

“This is a book aimed squarely at helping stu-dents realize how the sociological perspectivemay be applied to killing and murder in itsvarious forms, from the mundane ... to thegenocidal.... I am deeply grateful to Watersfor providing such a valuable and accessiblebook in this endeavor.” —Michael O. Maume,

Teaching Sociology

Taking another person’slife is the crime forwhich every societyreserves the strongest ofpunishments. But why(and when) is the act ofkilling sometimesdefined as murder—asinexcusable—and other

times considered a justifiable, or evenrighteous, act? Grappling with this ambi-guity, Tony Waters sheds light on thesociology of murder.

Interracial Contact and Social ChangeGeorge Yancey

“Yancey masterfully details the promises andpitfalls of interracial contact in the 21st cen-tury. Tight, solid, gutsy ... an outstandingcontribution to understanding our collectivehuman future.” —David Brunsma

In this thought-provok-ing analysis, GeorgeYancey reevaluates thecontroversial “contacthypothesis” as heexplores if and wheninterracial contact cancombat the racial ani-mosity and inequalitypermeating US society.

Yancey draws on quantitative andqualitative investigations of interracialreligious congregations, families, andfriendships to demonstrate that extensiveinteractions with people of color can alterthe racial attitudes of whites. In theprocess, he challenges the assumptionthat contact necessarily results in peopleof color assimilating white values andculture: it may strengthen their socioeco-nomic positions, but it does not subverttheir racial identity. Contact, Yancey con-cludes, is not a panacea for society’sracial ills—but it is a vital supplement tothe structural changes that must occur.

George Yancey is associate professorof sociology at the University of NorthTexas.

Benjamin P. Bowser

“In this consistentlyinsightful book, Bowsertraces the development ofthe black middle class.”

—Joe R. Feagin, Contemporary Sociology

“Provides a sound and needed summary of thehistory of the African-American middle class.”

—Harvey J. Strum, Multicultural Review

The widespread presence of successfulAfrican Americans in virtually all walks oflife has led many in the United States tobelieve that the races are now on an equalfooting —and that color blindness is themost appropriate way to deal with racialdifference. In strong contrast, BenjaminBowser argues that the seemingly compa-rable black and white middle classes, whileinextricably linked, in fact exist on entirelydifferent economic planes—and that issuesof race and class are inseparable in theUnited States.

Benjamin P. Bowser is professor ofsociology at California State University,East Bay.
