Features/BenefitsEvery compact one-pieceunit arrives fully assembled, charged, tested, and ready torun.
Quiet, efficient operation anddependable performanceCompressors have vibration isolatorsfor quiet operation. Efficient fan andmotor design permits operation at lowsound levels.
Unit sizes 008-028 offer lower utilitycosts through part-load operation us-ing 2 stages of cooling.
Quiet and efficient operation is pro-vided by belt-driven evaporator fans(standard on all units over 5 tons). Thebelt-driven evaporator-fan is equippedwith variable-pitch pulleys which allowadjustment within the rpm ranges ofthe factory-supplied pulleys.
Increased operating efficiency isachieved through computer-designedcoils featuring staggered internallyenhanced copper tubes. Fins areripple-edged for strength, lanced, anddouble waved for higher heat transfer.
Durable, dependableconstructionDesigned for durability in any climate, the weather-resistant cabinets are con-structed of galvanized steel and bonder-ized, and all exterior panels are coatedwith a prepainted baked enamel finish. The paint finish is non-chalking, and is
capable of withstanding ASTM (Ameri-can Society for Testing and Materials)B117 500-hour Salt Spray Test. Allinternal cabinet panels are primed, permitting longer life and a more at-tractive appearance for the entire unit.
In addition, all size 004-014 unitsare designed with a single, continuoustop piece to eliminate any possibleleaks at seams or gasketing. Totally en-closed condenser-fan motors and per-manently lubricated bearings provideadditional unit dependability.
Easy installation andconversion All units are shipped in the verti-cal duct configuration for fit-up tostandard roof curbs. The contractorcan order and install the roof curb earlyin the construction stage, before deci-sions on size requirements are made.
All units feature a base rail designwith forklift slots and rigging holes foreasier maneuvering. Durable packag-ing protects all units during shipmentand storage.
The units can be easily convertedfrom a vertical to a horizontal duct con-figuration by relocating the panels sup-
plied with the unit (sizes 004-014 only). To convert size 004-014 units from vertical to horizontal discharge, simply relocate 2 panels. The same ba-sic unit can be used for a variety of ap-plications and can be quickly modifiedat the jobsite. To convert size 015-028 units fromvertical to horizontal discharge, use theoptional horizontal supply/returnadapter roof curb (50HJ015,017 and50TJ016-025) or accessory conver-sion kit (50HJ020-028).Convenient duct openings in theunit basepans permit side-by-side orconcentric duct connections (seeApplication data section) without re-quiring internal unit modification.NOTE: On units using horizontal sup-ply and return, the accessory baromet-ric relief or power exhaust MUST beinstalled on the return ductwork.Thru-the-bottom service connec-tion capability comes standard withthe rooftop unit to allow power andcontrol wiring to be routed through theunit’s basepan, thereby minimizing

roof penetrations (to prevent waterleaks). Power and control connectionsare made on the same side of the unitto simplify installation. The non-corrosive sloped conden-sate drain pan (size 004-014)permits either an external horizontalside condensate drain (outside the roof
curb) or an internal vertical bottomdrain (inside the roof curb). Bothoptions require an external, field-supplied P-trap.Standard 2-in. throwaway filters are easily accessed through a remov-able panel located above the air intakehood. No tools are required to changeunit filters.Belt-driven evaporator-fan motors allow maximum on-site flexibility with-out changing motors or drives.Field-installed accessory electricheaters are available in a wide rangeof capacities. An available single-point
wiring kit makes installation simple.Low voltage wiring connections are easily made thanks to the large ter-minal board which is located for quick, convenient access.
In addition, color-coded wires permiteasy tracing and diagnostics.
Proven compressor reliabilityDesign techniques feature computer-programmed balance between com-pressor, condenser, and evaporator.Carrier-specified hermetic compres-sors are equipped with compressorovercurrent and overtemperature pro-
tection to ensure dependability. All units have Carrier’s exclusive
Acutrol™ (004-014) or TXV (thermo-static expansion valve) metering de-vice (015-028) which precisely con-trols refrigerant flow, preventingslugging and flood-back, while main-taining optimum unit performance.Refrigerant filter driers are standard.
Integrated economizers andoutdoor-air dampersAvailable as options or accessories, economizers and manual outdoor-airdampers introduce outdoor air which
mixes with the conditioned air, improv-ing indoor-air quality and often reduc-ing energy consumption.
During a first stage call for cooling, ifthe outdoor-air temperature is belowthe economizer control changeoverset point, the mixed-air sensor modu-lates the economizer outdoor-airdamper open to take advantage of freecooling provided by the outside air. When second-stage cooling is calledfor, the compressor is energized inaddition to the economizer. If the
outdoor-air temperature is above thechangeover set point, the first stageof compression is activated and theeconomizer damper stays at minimumposition.
Accessory upgrade kits allow forcontrol by differential dry-bulb temper-ature (outdoor vs return), outdoor air
enthalpy changeover, or more precisedifferential enthalpy control.Units can be equipped with different
economizer options to meet specificcontrols applications. The factory-installed or field-installed EconoMi$erIV and EconoMi$er2 are available. TheEconoMi$er IV is used with the stan-dard rooftop unit controls and includesan industry standard, stand-alone,solid-state control. The control can beused with a CO2 sensor for DCV (de-mand control ventilation) operation. For direct digital control (DDC) applica-tions, the EconoMi$er2 can be operat-ed using PremierLink™ controls or athird party controller. The Econo-Mi$er2 includes 4 to 20 mA actuatorcapability for demand control ventila-tion applications.
All economizers incorporate a paral-lel blade, gear-driven damper systemfor efficient air mixing and reliablecontrol. In addition, the standarddamper actuator includes a springreturn to provide reliable closure onpower loss. The economizers for sizes004-014 are equipped with up to100% barometric relief capability forhigh outdoor airflow operations. Econ-omizers for unit sizes 004-014 areavailable factory installed for vertical re-turn only. Economizers for unit sizes015-028 are compatible for vertical orhorizontal return. An optional field-installed barometric relief package isavailable for 015-028 size units.
In addition, single-stage powerexhaust is available as a field-installedaccessory for EconoMi$er IV to helpmaintain proper building pressure.
For units without economizer, year-round ventilation is enhanced by amanual outdoor-air damper. On size004-014 units, a 25% or 50% manualdamper is available as a field-installedaccessory. Unit sizes 015-028 areequipped with a manual 25% damper.
Service options (50HJ004-017, 50TFF004-014 and50TJ016-028 only)Servicing a rooftop unit has neverbeen easier with the new factory-installed service options for theserooftop units. These options includethe following:• Hinged access panels are provided
for the filter/indoor-fan motor,
compressors, evaporator fan, andcontrol box areas. Quick access tomajor components is accomplishedby simply unlatching and swingingopen the various panels. Eachhinged panel is permanentlymounted to the unit, thereby elimi-nating the concern of a dropped orwind-blown panel puncturing deli-cate roof materials. The 4 extendedaccess panels are also equippedwith ‘‘tie back’’ retaining devices tohold the door in the open positionwhile servicing the unit.
• An external, covered, 115-v GroundFault Interrupt (GFI) receptacle isprovided as a convenient powersource for drills, lights, refrigerantrecovery units, or other electricalservice tools. A factory-supplied stepdown transformer is connected tothe “load” side of the unit mainpower connection (size 004-014).For sizes 015-028, connect the out-
let to a field-supplied and properlyfused branch circuit power supply.
• Slide out “motor-drive-blower”reduces service time (only on50HJ017).
• An integral non-fused disconnectswitch within the rooftop unitreduces installation time, labor andmaterial costs. Safety is assured byan interlock which prevents access tothe control box unless the switch is inthe OFF position. In addition, theexternally mounted handle incorpo-rates power lockout capability to fur-ther protect service personnel.
Carrier PremierLink™ controlsadd reliability, efficiency, andsimplification (50HJ004-017,50TFF004-014 and 50TJ016-028 only)The PremierLink direct digital controlscan be ordered as a factory-installedoption or as a field-installed accessory.Designed and manufactured exclusivelyby Carrier, the controls can be used toactively monitor and control all modesof operations, as well as monitor thefollowing diagnostics and features:unit number, zone temperature, zone

compatible with ComfortLink™ con-trols, CCN (Carrier Comfort Net-work®) and ComfortVIEW™ Software. The Scrolling Marquee and Naviga-tor™ display are optional tools that canbe used for programming and monitor-ing the unit for optimal performance. The addition of the Carrier CO2 sensorin the conditioned space providesASHRAE 62-99 (American Society ofHeating, Refrigeration and Air Condi-tioning Engineers) compliance and De-mand Control Ventilation.
The PremierLink™ peer-to-peer,Internet ready communicating control isdesigned specifically for Constant Vol-ume (CV) and Variable Volume andTemperature (VVT®) applications. Thiscomprehensive controls system allowsall Carrier rooftops with a 3-wire com-munication bus to be daisy chained to-gether on a roof to create a fully func-tional HVAC (heating, ventilation, andair conditioning) automation system.
Indoor-air quality begins withCarrier rooftopsSloped condensate pans minimizebiological growth in rooftop units inaccordance with ASHRAE Standard62. Two-inch filters with optional dirtyfilter indicator switch provide forgreater particle reduction in the returnair. The face-split evaporator coilsimprove the dehumidification capabili-ty of standard units, maximize buildinghumidity control.
Optional proportional reactingCO2 sensor is available with theEconoMi$er IV or EconoMi$er2 out-door air damper option/accessory toaid the IAQ benefits.
Humidi-MiZer™ adaptivedehumidification system(50HJ004-014)Carrier’s Humidi-MiZer adaptive dehu-midification system is an all-inclusivefactory-installed option that can beordered with any Weathermaster®50HJ004-014 rooftop unit to meetthe demand for providing a flexibleand high performing solution toaccommodate all of these design relat-
ed issues. This system expands the en-velope of operation of Carrier’sWeathermaster 50HJ004-014 rooftopproducts to provide unprecedentedflexibility to meet year-round comfortconditions. The Humidi-MiZer adap-tive dehumidification system has theindustry’s only dual dehumidificationmode setting. The Humidi-MiZersystem includes two new modes ofoperation. The Weathermaster50HJ004-014 rooftop coupled withthe Humidi-MiZer system is capable of
operating in normal design coolingmode, subcooling mode, and hot gasreheat mode. Normal Design Coolingmode is when the unit will operate un-der its normal sequence of operationby cycling compressors to maintaincomfort conditions. Subcooling modewill operate to satisfy part load typeconditions when the space requirescombined sensible and a higher pro-portion of latent load control. Hot GasReheat mode will operate when out-door temperatures diminish and theneed for latent capacity is required forsole humidity control. Hot Gas Reheatmode will provide neutral air for maxi-mum dehumidification operation.
Exclusive MoistureMi$er™dehumidification package(50HJ015,017 and50TJ016-028)The MoistureMi$er dehumidificationpackage is a result of recent advances
by Carrier in controlling comfort levels. This factory-installed option significant-ly improves the dehumidification capa-bility of the rooftop unit and helps con-trol humidity levels in the building.
This option provides increased dehu-midification by cooling the hot liquidrefrigerant leaving the condenser coil. The MoistureMi$er package consistsof a subcooling coil located on theleaving-air side of the evaporator coil. The location of this coil in the indoorairstream enhances the latent capacityof the 50HJ and TJ units by as muchas 40%. Many buildings suffer from hu-
midity damage or poor indoor air qual-ity due to humid conditions. The im-proved latent capacity provided by theMoistureMi$er option reduces thebuilding’s humidity, eliminating poten-tial property damage and making thespace more comfortable.
The MoistureMi$er option is theideal IAQ (indoor-air quality) option forhot and humid regions. The operationof the MoistureMi$er package can becontrolled by a field-installed, wallmounted humidistat or Thermidistat™device. The circuit activates only whenneeded (using the accessory humidistat)
as opposed to some dehumidificationsystems that operate continuously. Thehumidistat can be set for any humiditylevel between 20% and 80% relativehumidity. The Thermidistat device canbe set for any humidity level between50% and 90% relative humidity.
COBRA™ energy recoveryunits (50HJ004-014 only)Carrier’s factory-installed optionalCOBRA units recover energy from thebuilding exhaust air and precondition
ventilation air for the rooftop unitduring winter and summer operation. These units are designed to satisfy thehigher ventilation requirements andother building codes while minimizingenergy costs.
Factory installation of the 62AQ sec-tion provides the benefit of reduced
field-installation time, single point pow-er connections, and the assurance of afactory test for the complete COBRAunit. The COBRA energy recoverysection requires less maintenance thanother energy recovery systems and canbe serviced by any qualified refrigera-tion technician.
The COBRA energy recovery unitsutilize Carrier’s high-efficiency50HJ004-014 rooftop units and pro-vide 3 to 121/ 2 tons of cooling capaci-ty with the capability to pre-condition600 to 3000 cfm of outdoor air.
Indoor-air quality (IAQ) generally
refers to the level of pollutants inside abuilding. These pollutants include ciga-rette smoke, carbon dioxide exhaled byoccupants, radon gas, car exhaust, paint fumes, and odors.
Concern over increased indoor airpollutants has been spurred by severalissues: 1) changes in new buildingconstruction methods and retrofit ofolder buildings have reduced airinfiltration rates; 2) Synthetic materialsrelease airborne particles, odors, and chemicals; and 3) HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning)systems that bring in minimal fresh
air.In 1989, IAQ concerns causedASHRAE to recommend increasedventilation for all public buildings.Simply introducing fresh air into abuilding, however, is not alwayspractical or cost effective. Additionalventilation can overload HVACsystems and increase energy costs.
Carrier’s COBRA energy recoveryunit solves this dilemma by providingincreased fresh air while keepingincreased costs to a minimum. Inaddition, the COBRA energy recoveryunit helps reduce humidity levels,
which helps to prevent deterioration ofbuilding materials and retards thegrowth of mold and mildew.
The COBRA energy recovery unitprovides the best solution to retainingthe energy-conserving benefits of to-day’s tighter building constructionwhile improving indoor-air quality.

II Determine fan speed and power requirementsat design conditions.
Before entering the Fan Performance tables, calculatethe total static pressure required based on unit com-ponent. From the given and the Accessory/FIOPStatic Pressure table of the 50TFF find:External static pressure supply 0.6 in. wgExternal static pressure return 0.2 in. wgAccessory static — None 0.0 in. wgTotal Static 0.8 in. wgEnter the Fan Performance table for verticaldischarge units of the 50TFF006 at 2000 cfm. Thestandard motor will provide 0.92 in. wg ESP at highspeed. Watts is 1144.NOTE: Convert to Fan Heat using the formula below.Indoor Fan Heat = watts x 3.413 Btuh/watt
= 1144 x 3.413= 3904 Btuh
III Select Energy$Recycler unit based on OutdoorEntering Cfm.Entering the Energy$Recycler Product Data literature, see the Cooling Ratings table in the Capacities sec-tion. At 450 cfm entering outdoor airflow, chooseModel 62AQ060.Using 450 cfm outdoor supply airflow, 95 F OD DB,and 75 F OD WB find performance of the 62AQ060at these conditions:Energy$Recycler Gross Cooling

IV Using the simplified* method below, calculatethe approximate mixed air temperature for therooftop unit evaporator coil.Using the outdoor-air entering cfm, the room cfm andthe room exhaust airflow with their respective db andwb temperatures, determine the db and wb enteringthe rooftop evaporator coil.
a) Estimate the mixed air db to the evaporator coil.t mix db = ((cfm oa x t oa db) + ((cfm ra – cfm exh)x t ra db)) / ((cfm ao + (cfm ra – cfm exh)))= ((450 cfm x 73.0 F) + ((2000 cfm – 450 cfm)
x 78 F)) / ((450 cfm + (2000 cfm – 450 cfm)))Mixed air into the rooftop evaporator coil= 76.9 F db
b) Estimate the mixed air wb to the evaporator coil.t mix wb* = ((cfm oa x t oa wb) + ((cfm ra – cfmexh) x tra wb))/ ((cfm oa + (cfm ra – cfm exh)))= ((450 cfm x 66.9 F) + ((2000 cfm – 450 cfm)
x 65 F)) / ((450 cfm + (2000 cfm – 450 cfm)))Mixed air temperature into the rooftop evaporator= 65.40 F wb*Simplified method of determining wet bulb (wb)temperature of mixture. This approximation is usedbecause the wb lines in the area of the psychromet-ric chart used in the calculation is relatively linear, providing a close approximation. A more accuratesolution can be found using the E-Cat program.

The required heating capacity is 60,000 Btuh. Deter-mine additional electric heat capacity in kW. There-fore 40,896 Btuh (60,000 Btuh – 19,104 Btuh) ofadditional heat is required.Determine additional electric heat in kW.(40,896/3413 Btuh/kW) = 11.98 kW of additionalheat is required.Enter Electric Heating Capacities tables on page 68,for the 50TFF006 at 208/230 v, 3 phase. The16.0 kW heater at 240 v most closely satisfies theheating requirement. To calculate kW at 230 v usethe multiplication factors table.16.0 x 0.92 = 14.72 kW16.0 x 0.92 x 3413 Btuh/kW = 50,239 BtuhTotal unit net heating capacity is 69,343 (50,239 +19,104) Btuh. The 50TFF006 unit with accessory16.0 kW electric heater is sufficient.
VIII Determine net cooling capacity.Cooling capacities are gross capacities anddo not include indoor (evaporator) or optionalEnergy$Recycler™ supply fan heat.Determine net cooling capacity using the followingformula:Net Capacity = (Gross Capacity Rooftop Unit +Energy$Recycler) – (Indoor [evaporator] fan motor[IFM] Heat + Optional Energy$Recycler Supply Fanmotor heat)Gross Total Cooling

X Electrical data RLA, FLA, LRA, MCA andMOCP.Separate Power Supply:If the 62AQ is wired for separate power see the Elec-trical Data table.Single Power Supply with Unit:The unit is 230 v-3-60 Hz, so from the 50TFF Electri-cal Data table, find unit electrical data. For the rooftopunit the data is MCA = 27.3 amps, MOCP =35 amps, Min Unit Disconnect Size FLA = 29, and
LRA = 128.For this example follow the steps outlined in theApplication Data section of the Energy$RecyclerProduct Data for single power supply for all rooftopunits except size 014 (230-v) and 62AQ on 460-vpower supply. For other size and voltage conditionsfollow corresponding steps also outlined in theEnergy$Recycler Product Data Application datasection. From the Single Power Supply table (Electrical DataEnergy$Recycler Product Data) find 230 v, fo62AQ060300, “X” = 8.1 amps and “Y” = 9.3 ampsAdd “X” amps to the MCA and MOCP and add “Y”amps to the minimum disconnect size.
(MOCP calculation is 43.1. Round the value down to40. 40 is greater than the MCA of 35.4, therefore 40is the correct MOCP.)
The wiring to the unit must be suitable for the MCAcalculated above. The overcurrent protective device for the combinationload is equal to 40, thus a single disconnect may beused for BOTH the MAIN UNIT and the 62AQ pro-vided that the wire supplying the 62AQ is sized for aminimum of 33% of the maximum overcurrent pro-tection device value (i.e., 40 x .33 = 14 Amps). Nofurther subfusing is required. In this example a 40-amp disconnect would be usedfor the combined load of the 50TFF006 and the62AQ060 Energy$Recycler unit.

NOTES:1. Direct interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate.2. The following formulas may be used:
tlwb = Wet-bulb temperature corresponding to enthalpy of air leavingevaporator coil (hlwb )
Where: h ewb = Enthalpy of air entering evaporator coil
3. The SHC is based on 80 F edb temperature of air entering evaporator
coil.Below 80 F edb, subtract (corr factor x cfm) from SHC.Above 80 F edb, add (corr factor x cfm) to SHC.
Interpolation is permissible.Correction Factor = 1.10 x (1 – BF) x (edb – 80).
