Who Are We and What Do We Do?
“Thank you for the ministry of the Good Mood Foundation and how you help and serve others. I
admire your courage and vulnerability to share your story. Thank you for your servant’s heart
that is willing to lay yourself bare to help and serve others who struggle with mental illness.
Mental illness touches most people at some point in their lives, either personally, or through a
loved one or friend.” -Joan and Burton French-
“Our Ministry” is to inpatients who are in a psychiatric and addiction hospital. We impact the
patients, at a time in their lives, when they are OPEN to God and how He can help them. We call
this hospital ministry “Engaging with God.” Everything we do has been carefully thought out and
strategically planned to provide maximum impact.
In February, 2012 we began our “Engaging with God” ministry at Carrollton Springs Hospital.
We’ve been ministering there every Sunday since. Carrollton Springs is a 44 bed psychiatric and
addiction hospital. Typically, about 15-18 patients attend. We recently had 24 patients attend. The
hospital is adding a new building which will add another 35 beds. This will effectively double our
ministry and everything it takes to minister to the patients. Completion should be finished by mid-
year in 2016.
Following is the process we use to impact our ministry clients which introduce
and reconnect them to the God of the Bible.

-Step One-
Capturing the Patient’s Attention
Every Sunday morning, I arrive at the hospital at 7:30 A.M.
as patients are having breakfast in the cafeteria.
I leave 25 “gift –sets.” Each set
includes my book, “My Pursuit of
a Good Mood” and three or four
others banded together (see
picture). I also leave a dozen
Bibles and several dozen mini
books and devotionals. I also leave
two boxes of cookies for the staff to enjoy!
As you can see, all the “gift-
sets” and additional resources
are on top of the nurse’s
station. There is a poster with
an arrow pointing to our
resources. To the far left are
additional resources.
Then I go into the cafeteria to
introduce myself and to let the
patients know that we’ve left a
“gift” for them.
The patients are “unplugged”
and most are receptive to
NEW ideas for getting and
staying WELL! Quality
Christian books is the first
method we use to introduce and reconnect the patients to the God of the Bible. Books are also a
tangible way for our supporters to provide a tool which makes a lasting impact. The “RIGHT”
books given at the RIGHT time can be transformative. In 2014 we gave away over 8,000 books.

These are 125 books ready to be banded together
into “Gift-Sets” for 6/28/2105. Patients are in a
place in their lives when they are OPEN to God and
what He has to say. Books HELP OPEN that door.
Titles included in “Gift Sets” for 6/28/2015 are:
“My Pursuit of a Good Mood” by Mike Attar
“What’s Next?” by Dr. Norman Wright
“The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived” by
Steven K. Scott
“You Can’t Take it With You” by John Ortberg
“When the Pieces Don’t Fit-Making Sense of
Life’s Puzzles” by K. Mason
These are “mini” books and devotionals. For
6/28/2015 the titles are:
God’s Word-the Bible
“Anger” by June Hunt
“Depression” by June Hunt
“The Healing Power of Forgiveness” by
George Foster
We have a three car
garage and “Our
Ministry” takes up
HALF of that space. So
for the last two years I
have to park my car in
the driveway or the
street.
Here are three
volunteers who come
every week to HELP.

Volunteers are putting
“Gift-Sets” together and
“Patient Workbooks” are
printed and bound.
The patients, staff and
hospital management
SEE value in this aspect
of our impacting effort. God has given us favor
with three CEOs since
Carrollton Springs
Hospital. God’s work!
Thankfully, we spend $3
or LESS for any book
title. We can do this
because we ONLY buy
“close-outs” of books
going out of print. But once they’re gone—they’re GONE! We give away paperback Bibles
that cost us $1 per copy. Patients are overwhelmed with our generosity and it HELPS the
patients feel more comfortable with us and encourages them to attend “Engaging with God”
group. It’s a lot of work to find bargains, sort, and inventory and put “sets” together. But I
wouldn’t be doing it unless I KNEW that giving away a “set” is a wonderful way into a patient’s
heart. Patient workbooks cost $4 to produce. Each is 100 pages’ front and back. This cost
includes paper, printer ink, comb binding, smiley face and “group” sticker labels. We typically
give away 25 workbooks each week.

-Step Two-
Capturing the Patient’s Spirit
My assistants and I return to the hospital in the
afternoon at 2:000 P.M. to set up for “Engaging with
God.” One of my assistants and I set-up. Then we
kneel and pray over each chair. We ask God to bring
His “sheep” and to have His way in each of the
patient’s lives. While we are doing this my OTHER
assitant is in the units engaging with the
patients. This includes listening and praying with the
patients. Also letting them know about group and
what to expect. Here is my assistant Jennifer DeFeo.
“Engaging with God” is a 75 minute multi-media and spoken
word presentation carefully constructed and executed to
convey three essential truths.

1. The issue of forgiving and being forgiven. Without question, the number ONE issue patients
struggle with is the issue of forgiveness—forgiving and being forgiven. So I share my story of
how I finally forgave the Nazis for killing my family in Poland during WWII. I also share how
I was forgiven for the theft of four silver trumpets. BOTH are powerful stories which encourage
the patients to begin the process of forgiving those who have hurt them and to ask for
forgiveness from those they have hurt. My stories are in the patient workbook.
2. The issue of walking in step with the Spirit. When God handed out “gifts” to His people, He
showered the Jews with the gift of selling. Why? The Jewish people were the ones God chose
to proclaim His Word. That said, God has given me an ability to know how to sell. So with His
selling gift, I’ve tailored our presentation to reach our targeted audience—patients with mood
struggles. I begin this section by illustrating that living a Spirit-led life is a choice. But being
Spirit-led is not possible unless you know God personally. Therefore, I creatively proclaim
the Gospel of Jesus Christ with “God has a ‘gift-box’ He wants to give you.”
It is indeed an honor to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ
every Sunday in a context patients understand. It is also a
privilege to see God cause their spirit to come to Him in faith.
And when a patient indicates they want to believe the Gospel
for the first time (or want to rededicate their life to Christ) my
assistant places her hand on the patient’s shoulder (with
permission of course). Then she prays. Each new believer also
receives a “Welcome into the Kingdom” package (see picture).
We know that the Angels in Heaven celebrate when one lost
sinner places their faith in Jesus Christ. So to demonstrate this
thought, Snoopy comes out of the “Gift Box” I use in my Gospel
presentation. My assistant presses a button and Snoopy does a
Snoopy dance. Then EVERYONE smiles and some CRY!
3. The issue of overcoming negative thoughts and negative
emotions. In this third section, I explain how watching, listening and
singing to praise and worship music is one of the BEST ways to
overcome negative thoughts and emotions. Then we sing “Brighter
Day” by Kirk Franklin which HELPS the patient produce a good mood.
We’ve also provided 24 MP3 players (like the one shown) for patient
use. Patients can't bring electronics and the hospital can't provide
either. But Carrollton Springs Hospital has allowed our ministry to
provide MP3 players. We know that the praise and worship songs on
the MP3 players provide patients with hope and encouragement. It also
introduces connects and reconnects the patients to the God of the Bible.

-Step Three-
Capturing the Patient’s Heart
When you read about the “healings” of Jesus Christ in the Gospels, there is a common theme. Jesus
often touched the person who was not well and He often spoke to them, too. EVERYTHING we
have purposefully done so far leads up to this very IMPORTANT aspect of our ministry—touch
and affirming words.
After singing “Brighter Day” my assistant and I pray for each patient individually. My assistant
and I kneel down and place our hand on EACH patient’s shoulder (with their permission). Then
we press in close and pray for them. After that, we ask if I can give the patient a hug (they always
say yes). While giving the hug we softly declare the following DIRECTLY into their ear. “Yes,
you are going to get WELL, you are going to get WELL.” Then we look the patient in the eye and
repeat, “Yes, ARE going to get well.”
Can we just show up to the hospital, engage a patient and
do that? NO!!!The right to touch and speak affirming
words MUST be earned.
Keep in mind, that the phrase “Yes, you are going to get WELL!” is
FEATURED on the FRONT of EVERY:
Gift-Set Flyers
Book Stickers
Flyers that Introduce “Engaging with God”
“Engaging with God” Workbooks
Envelope containing Notes of Encouragement
As we are praying, patients are also filling out an evaluation
where they can request a personal note of encouragment. My
assistants writes a personal note of encouragement (with a custom
designed Star of David with Cross design as shown) to every patient
that attended. These are delivered to the patients on Monday morning. The feedback we’ve
received indicates that the patients save their personal note of encouragement and reread it over
and over again. This is very impactful. Inside the envelope is another devotional book. We also
provide our contact information if the patient wants to call us for prayer and/or a hospital visitation.

Some of the Fruit of “Engaging with God”—
2015
“I wanted to thank you both for coming to Carrollton Springs Hospital the Sunday
that I was there. I have to say that after your powerful presentation I turned the
corner, felt hope, and began to make progress. You guys were my Jesus in the
flesh. Being in the hospital was one of the most humbling and freedom robbing
times of my life. Hearing your stories gave me the strength and encouragement to
hang on. I checked out the MP3 players and listened to Christian music as I went
to sleep at night. I also began confessing out loud daily the Bible verses that you
all provided. I have been out of the hospital for almost 2 months and I am not even
close to the same I was when I checked in. Also the handwritten note that you
sent me while at the hospital was unbelievable. I really hope that you will continue
the ministry as I know for every person that tells you how much of a difference
you made, there are nine who have not. God bless you both my brother and sister
in Christ.”
“I gave my life to Christ.”
“Opened my doors to believe in God more.”
“Reassured me of my salvation and God’s love.”
“Love to see peers who have overcome. I’m grateful for the hope and
encouragement.”
“It reminded me that God is the answer to everything.”
“Reminded me God is still with me.”
“Helped me know that being in God’s grace is so.”
“What I needed today to smile.”
“It helped me to find new meaning in my life.”
“Lots of good reminders. There IS Hope!”
“It was great, powerful. Comforting and very much needed as I continue
my journey of recovery. Amen and thank you!”

“It was the best thing [in the hospital] I’ve experienced.”
“Welcoming into God’s Kingdom was awesome to me and believing the
Gospel was touching.”
“I was immediately impressed with Mike’s depth of knowledge of the material. He
reads patient’s body language, level of participation and interest and then responds
with an excellent ebb and flow of content. The result was a unique presentation that
also feels highly polished.
Mike presents himself as lively and enthusiastic and earnestly desiring to please.
Mike proved that he knows the pain of the fellow patients. He hits our hot buttons
by sharing his experience with forgiveness, bipolar disorder, major depression,
medication, and hospitalization. He makes himself vulnerable and demonstrates that
he is one of their own with stories of confession and restitution. I am convinced that
he knows the pain of the patients and can empathize and have compassion for them.
At the close of the presentation, Mike boldly asked if anyone wanted to receive Jesus
into their heart and the free gift of salvation and forgiveness of their sins or to
rededicate themselves. Much to my surprise, three patients immediately responded.
Mike and Holly compassionately prayed with each by overshadowing the patient’s
chair in a little cocoon of love.
My overall impression of the group is that it was informative and fun and enjoyable.
Mike couches some serious topics in a package of fun and enjoyment. But the
manner in which the group ended reminded me that the purpose is a serious one
which is the conversion of souls to God. Mike proves that “Engaging with God”
was not just enjoyable and fun for the heart but was capable of touching our souls
as well.”
“I really appreciate your ministry. It was the best thing that came out of my stay
at Carrollton Springs Hospital. I am the woman who read you a poem I wrote in
June. God bless you and your ministry.”
“It gave me a different view of looking at the way I can personally improve
my choices in life.”
“True individual prayer for my recovery.”
“Uplifting and Spirit filled. Thank you.”

“I will continue to pray for the hearts at Carrollton Springs who will hear your
message. I know firsthand that it is inspirational! There is a lady that I showed
the love of Christ to while inpatient. She refused to go with me to your
presentation. We kept in contact after leaving the hospital. She ended up returning
to CS in March, and I encouraged her to attend. She loved it! Shortly after she
was released, she called and asked if I'd do a Bible study with her. So keep at this!
People are hungering for His Word and to know Him after attending!! I will be
praying Sunday afternoon... God bless!”
“Very special and meaningful.”
“It was life changing for me-Thank you very much.”
“You reached me in a difficult time and showed me how fun, how good
and loving God is. Thank you is not enough.”
“It helped me to snap back to the person I feel like I actually am deep
down. Happy, alive, fulfilled, good!”
“Proud to have a time to be with the Lord and hear the Gospel.”
“Taught me how to forgive and let the Lord help me get better.”
“Hello, Mike, I just got done reading your book, "My Pursuit of a Good Mood." I
received a copy of this while I was inpatient at Carrollton Springs back in February.
Missing my church family, I attended one of your Sunday afternoon sessions.
Immediately I loved your ministry and have been praying for it ever since. I'm so
inspired with how you're using your mood struggles for God's glory! After finishing
your book this week and seeing an invitation to email you, I thought I'd take this
opportunity to thank you for the work you're doing. I praise the Lord for His
abundant grace, and for giving you the desire to help those who have similar
struggles and pointing them to Christ for their healing and restoration. This past
year with my own struggles, I have found hope in the fact that Jesus is my rescuer.
It is my prayer that others can find that same hope! And this is why I am so grateful
for ministries such as yours...
The one thing I remember about your presentation (besides all the creativity and
energy!), is your talk about the importance of forgiveness. This is a major thing I am
struggling with. I know I must do this in order to be obedient, so I ask that you pray
that my heart will change in this area. God was definitely speaking to me back in
February. Some of our inpatient sessions were on forgiveness, a big part of your

story is about forgiveness, and I was on Step 8 in my recovery program
(Regeneration at Watermark Church) ...FORGIVENESS.
Stories like yours inspire me to persevere; they help me to see that though things are
hard and a battle now, He will use it later. Thank you for answering the call to write,
share your life, and go to places like Carrollton Springs and show others Christ and
how He can transform our lives! I will continue to pray for The Good Mood
Foundation, and that hearts will open up, and lives be changed!”
“Powerful, uplifting, hope forgiveness.”
“Uplifting and a great testimony that we can be healed from this illness
and/or feel better and stay well with proper guidance.”
“Uplifting my mood.”
“Thank you for praying for each of us.”
“I needed this. The best thing that I sat in [while] in this place.”
“I loved seeing the ladies respond to Jesus ‘Overwhelming’ I want to
serve.”
“Very high energy and great message.”
Recently, I prayed for a woman who was clearly distraught and broken. So, I
asked my assistant, Jennifer DeFeo, to go over and talk to her. I left the cafeteria
and went to the unit to gather our things. Twenty minutes later, Jennifer came
back to the lobby and said, “(patient) just prayed to receive Jesus Christ.” Wow!

“Mike, I recently went through detox here in Dallas, and treatment in Vegas for
my alcohol addiction. This was my 1st experience and hopefully my last, with both.
I wanted to thank you for writing "My Pursuit of a Good Mood." It was the first
book I read in detox, and it gave me comfort. If there is ever anything I can do to
‘repay’ for your jump start to my recovery, please let me know.”
“It made me feel closer to God and renewed my faith.”
“I asked to bring Jesus into my life.”
“I really needed the group, all of the singing and me becoming a

Professional Counselor’s Perspective
I am Amanda and a recent graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary with a MA in
Biblical Counseling. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Intern in the state of
Texas. I had the privilege of auditing Mike Attar’s group, “Engaging with God,” at
Carrollton Springs Hospital on Sunday, March 8, 2015. Upon arriving, there were
workbooks and books set out at each place for the group members and Mike
welcomed me and filled me in on what to expect. Everything was very organized
and I was struck by his generosity and all the materials that were provided. Shortly
thereafter, group members began filing in and took a seat. Mike warmly greeted each
patient and shared about himself, his background and encouraged participants in
their own story. Mike talked in depth about the concept of forgiveness, gave an
overview of biblical characters that had mood struggles and he clearly shared the

Gospel. He gave the opportunity for group members to respond and six responded,
believing the Gospel for the first time. Praise!
Afterward, he walked through the Fruit of the Spirit and shared helpful and relevant
scriptures that would encourage each participant. Mike uniquely tied this into their
struggles in a personal way. The session concluded with a time of worship and
prayer, which was welcomed by all and provided an example of a practical way to
manage one’s mood. Overall, the group was run efficiently and was extremely
positive and encouraging. The content was broad and deep, but relevant and
uplifting. Mike is uniquely gifted to lead this group because of his own struggle with
bipolar disorder, his strong faith in Christ as well as his background in Judaism. He
was energetic and engaging throughout and he communicated with the group
members in a personal way, which clearly impacted at least six of them in a life-
long way. It was an honor to be a part of this experience and it challenged me and
helped me think through mood disorders and treatment in my own counseling.
Professional Psychiatric Nurse’s Perspective
Just recently retired, I was a psychiatric nurse for more than 30 years. During this
time, I worked in most of the largest and most prestigious hospitals and homeless
shelters in Dallas, and so was privileged to see many different approaches and
treatment modalities to mental illness and addiction. I have observed that medicines
are often very effective and sometimes life-saving, and there are also other tools used
in-patient that can be very helpful, and applied to daily life once discharged.
Unfortunately, however, often times the treatment plan was noticeably absent of at
least attempting to address the spiritual side of the person. And not employing the
healing power of our Creator is not only short-sighted, but measurably less effective.
Consequently, it was with great pleasure that I read Mr. Attar's book (My Pursuit of
a Good Mood) and audited “Engaging with God” group. I wish to share some of my
impressions with you here. Honest, perceptive, engaging, self-revealing, giving
concrete tools and directions for help... and most importantly, always keeping the
God of the Bible as the center post and compass for true holistic treatment. And all
this from someone who has been there. Someone who has experienced the depths of
mental illness, its crippling effects on self, friends and family, and yet has come out

This is “Our Ministry”
To date, I have not received any salary or any financial benefit from this ministry.
