between the ages of 15-49 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate

partner within a 12-month period and 49 countries currently have no laws protecting women

from domestic violence. Progress is occurring regarding harmful practices such as child marriage

which has declined by 30% in the past decade, but there is still much work to be done to

complete eliminate such practices. Providing women and girls with equal access to education,

health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making

processes will fuel sustainable economies and benefit societies and humanity at large. She urged

that women should be role model and set a positive example for others. The programme was

ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITIES OF DIFFERENT BRANDED SOAPS

Dr. R.Manju*, A.Priyadharshini, T.IndhuKumar, V.Mohanapriya,

K.Gayathiri, A.Michael Mathan.

In this study antibacterial activities of seven different brands of soaps like Hamam,

Dettol, Lifebuoy, Cinthol, Margo, Himalaya and Jhonsons were checked. Different bacterial

strains like Staphylococcus aureus, E.coli, Bacillus sp.,, Psedomonas sp.,, Klebsiella sp., which

plays their role in the several skin infections are treated with the respective soaps. This was done

by Agar Diffusion Method where the stock solution of 50µl were loaded into the wells of the

agar plates and were labeled. All the soaps showed their certain antibacterial activity against the

specific strains. The best soaps were identified by their zone of inhibition. The organisms like

Pseudomonas were found to be resistant against the soap sample where as E.coli and

Staphylococcus aureus are sensitive. From this, Jhonsons soap was identified as them effective

than any other selected samples and it was followed by Himalaya which has little differences

when compared with the first one.

STUDY OF PHOTOSYNTHETIC MICROORGANISMS IN TWO DIFFERENT POND

ECOSYSTEM USING WINOGRADSKY COLUMNS

Dr. LAli Growther* A. Harshini, M. Vijayalakshmi, M. Selavapriya, K. Sownthariya,

C.V. Naveen, S. Vishnu, K. Santhosh, M. Surjith.

To study the Photosynthetic microorganisms, Winogradsky Columns were set up. Water

sources from two different Pond ecosystems were used for the study. The ponds selected were

Sungam and Ukkadam. The Columns were enriched with Carbon, Sulfur, Carbon and sulfur.

A control was also maintained. Two sets of columns were used. One set was incubated in the

light and the other in the dark. Microscopic observations were made periodically and the colour

changes in the Winogradsky columns were observed. Anaerobic bacteria were cultured in

Robertsons cooked meat media and thioglycollate media. Naked eye and Microscopic

observations shows the presence of algae, Gram positive spore forming bacteria and gram

negative bacteria.

Soil contamination due to the disposal of chemical fertilizer and urban wastes generated

by human activities has become a major environmental concern. Controlled and uncontrolled

disposal of wastes to agricultural soils are responsible for the migration of contaminants into

non- contaminated sites (Ghosh and Singh, 2005). Soil contamination by chemical fertilizer and

heavy metals may pose a threat to human health, if the metals enter the food chain (Berti and

Jacobs, 1996). So, use of biofertilizers such as Mycorrhizal fungi is a suitable substitution for

chemical fertilizers in agriculture ecosystem.

DEVELOPMENT OF BIOFERTILIZER FROM MYCORRHIZAE

Dr. N. Hemashenpagam, Raj Kumar, Jency, Sujitha

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are ubiquitous obligate mycobionts forming symbiosis with

the terrestrial plant communities. The mycosymbionts are widespread among both cultivated and

wild plants. So far more than 170 species of AM fungi have been recorded and described and

many more still awaits discovery. The role of mycorrhizae in plant development pertains to

mineral nutrition especially the uptake of phosphate. this effect has been attributed to an increase

in the absorbing surface and exploitation of the larger soil volume by the extra radical mycelium,

the small hyphal diameter leaded to an increased phosphate absorbing surface area and compared

to non-mycorrhizal roots, higher phosphate influx rate per surface units, the formation of

polyphosphate by mycorrhizal fungi and thus low internal phosphate concentrations, and the

production of organic acids and phosphatases, which catalyze the release of phosphate from

organic complexes. The symbiotic arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi develop on extensive

hyphal network and provide water and nutrients to plants. Soil microorganism can influence the

soil structure and play important role for AM fungi colonization in root

ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF MICROORGANISMS PRESENT IN THE

Earphones are a pair of small loudspeaker drivers worn on or around the head over a

user's ears. These individual units are plugged into the user's ear canal. Recently the usages of

earphones has increased and have a high rate of sharing among them, headsets, headphones and

ear phones can easily be a vector of potential pathogens. The external auditory canal normally

harbours many bacterial colonies which form the normal commensal bacterial flora of the ear.

They are predominantly non-pathogenic and mostly aerobic. The study showed high level of

bacterial contamination of the surface of the ear buds of the earphones. Apart from the quantity

of bacteria the type of microorganism present on a surface is also an important to determinant

whether an infection will occur or not. Bacterial isolates were obtained from the samples

collected from earphones. Isolates were identified by Gram staining and biochemical tests were

done. The study showed prominent presence of Staphylococcus species, E.coli and the presence

of Proteus and Bacillus. All the confirmed organism were subjected to the antibiotic sensitivity

assay Kirby- bauer disc diffusion method with 6 different antibiotics. All the isolates showed

varied degrees of resistance to the antibiotics tested. The pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a

fruit-bearing deciduous shrub in the family Lythraceae. Pomegranate bark, leaves, immature

fruits and fruit rind have medicinal value. Punica granatum seed oil, rind and juice have anti-

cancer properties that inhibit proliferation, cell cycle, and angiogenesis. All the confirmed

organism were subjected to the antibiotic sensitivity assay by Agar well diffusion method with

the ethanol extract of the Punica granatum fruit rind. All isolates showed various degrees of

resistance and were tabulated.

IMPROVING SHELF LIFE OF APPLES USING EDIBLE COATINGS OF SOY

PROTEIN AND WHAET GLUTEN

Mrs. C. Ajitha* J. Rohin Karthik. Sangeetha. G. Akshaya. N. Aashiq. Sanjeevi Kumar.

R. Anjali. Gowthami

The aim of this study was to improve Apple fruit storability by testing the effect of edible

coating with soy or wheat gluten protein as a carrier of thymol, which mainly presents in the

essential oil of thyme plants and calcium chloride on quality of Apple fruits. Thymol and

calcium chloride were applied during preparing the edible coating film. Coating fruits with

thymol carried by soy protein or white gluten and CaCl2 carried by soy protein showed the

lowest weight loss percentage. Treating fruits with thymol carried by soyprotein or white gluten

did not exhibit any change in fruit appearance until 15 days of storage. All treatments reduced

the total colony, molds and yeasts compared to control. Fruits coated with thymol carried by soy

protein or white gluten was the most effective treatments. In addition, coating fruits with thymol

carried by soy protein or white gluten recorded the lowest values of anthocyanin, higher chroma

and higher hue angle compared to control fruits.

CULTIVATION OF MUSHROOM FROM CHEAP SUBSTRATES

Dr. N. Vanitha* N. Arunachalam, S. Divyapriya, S. Deeraj, S. Gajendhiran, L. Sujitha,

S. Vijay, M. Vijay kumar

The agricultural paddy straw waste plays an important role in Mushroom Cultivation.

Paddy straw containing high amount of nutrients that helps to grow Mushroom. The cup of coffee

truly wonderful thing, but the problem is 99 % of the biomass of the Filtered Coffee waste.

However, the Filtered coffee waste still remain the nutrients which Oyster mushroom love to grow

on. The cheap substrate (Paddy straw & coffee waste) collected from various area and its sterilized

and packed in polythene bag. After, that inoculate the spawn into the bag in layer by layer. The

incubation time (22-25⁰c)for 2 – 3 weeks. After incubation the mycelium spread in the bag and

start they growth of mushroom (Oyster Mushroom). After incubation, the Mushroom was

harvested, the harvested mushroom there is a high yield in paddy straw bag and much less than

amount of growth in Filtered coffee waste compare to the paddy straw bag. Because the paddy

straw containing huge amount of nutrition compared to Filtered coffee waste. So, the growth will

differ. But fully coffee waste bag takes more time to growth of mushroom. So, the yield will be

very low amount of growth.

SOCIAL MEDIA WITH GRACE!

Social media has become a real tool to evolve social integration. It remains at its best in

helping people in reporting, conveyance and transmission. But we wonder why people grow

crazy over it sticking to this term customarily. The impact of social media on society got

diversified in over 10-15 years. I always suggest people to handle social media not less but more

of them. Find pleasure in using social media to build powerful and genuine friendships. Use

them so as to maximise your rectitude and to not gross dishonour and infamy. Stop slothfully

scrolling down the feed to pass intervals. Be linked up with people who upgrade your standards.

Adjoin groups which push you towards the expandable knowledge.

Move with an intent to learn more. Let the grace of prudence and foresight be with you

unremittingly. The raised level surfaces like Twitter, LinkedIn, Fb and others have made it

possible to access information in random clicks. Get benefitted from them in a constructive way.

Let your handling be worthwhile.

What do you opt for easing yourself and mental reposing? Get a buzz out of pieces of text

humorous in nature but never mutilate hearts. Choose sagaciously what to watch, listen and pay

interest on. Exercise to use applications to create and share calibre content. I flag the fact that

social networking has become a burgeoning platform. Reveal out your excellence in social

networking, let it not multiply your anxiety. Be not the person that sits behind reckoning bad

impacts of social media on youth today but be destined to cut down the faults and roll out the

concept of change. You gain what looking up to apical buds unbothering the entire shoot and

root!? Let the people regard you highly for how you represent things socially. Be commendable

to the world by replacing unbefitting with delightful purpose. I pen down these words for you to

crack the code of shame arising through social media. Swim against the type of nomophobia that

gets its origin from the social media. Advocate against all odds and remain discerning and

examining the virtue.
