Since April 4th, 1986, Sigma Lambda Beta has grown from a single chapter at the University of Iowa to well over 70 chapters, colonies and alumni associations that stretch from California to New York and even reach the shores of Puerto Rico. This growth can be attributed to the combined efforts of faculty, staff, honorary members, alumni brothers and undergraduatebrothers who believe in the ideals of which Sigma Lambda Beta stands for and the programs it promotes.

Founded in 1776 on the campus of William and Mary as a secret society.

Founded in response to political tyranny, placed emphasis on fellowship, constitutional right to assemble and freedom of speech as well as independent decision making.

December 6th, 1986, first expansion of Sigma Lambda Beta to the Beta and Gamma chapters.

April 27th, 1987, expansion to the Delta chapter in Puerto Rico.

Creation of Fraternity magazine El Illuminador in 1991.

Sigma Lambda Beta becomes “Coast to Coast” in the Spring of 1992 with the expansion to SUNY-Stony Brook (Pi chapter) and Cal. State University-Dominguez Hills (Tau Chapter).

Sigma Lambda Beta is nationally recognized in December of 1992 by the National Interfraternity Council (NIC)

Summer of 1996, the Fraternity hires office staff to handle its day-to-day administrative activities.

The Fraternity obtains a toll free number in order to better facilitate our brothers’ and our interests’ requests, comments and concerns.

Visiones, Sigma Lambda Beta’s history book is written in the Fall of 1997.

The Fraternity becomes one of the charter members of the Latin Fraternal Council (LFC) in the Spring of 2000.

The Purpose of Sigma Lambda Beta shall primarily consist of the following:

• To promote Latino culture/heritage in a positive manner

• To promote standards of excellence in morality, ethics and education.

• To better serve the needs and desires of society by disseminating the diverse cultures that each of us possess.

Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. believesin the principles of fairness, opportunity and in the equality of all men regardless of their race, culture or ethnicity. It is the mission of Sigma Lambda Beta to recruit quality prospective members who are confident and not afraid to express or share their personal thoughts. They must be ready to grow not only as a person, but also as a brother of the Fraternity and a member of their community. As members, Brothers will learn to “open” their eyes and see the endless opportunities that are available to all people. Furthermore, they will share thoughts and ideas, and learn to recognize the potential that we, as a united whole, can and will exhibit in order to keep our shared values alive and working.

In order to begin the Membership Education Process, one must satisfy the following requirements:

• Must be enrolled as a full time student (12+ credit hours).

• Must have a 2.25 cumulative GPA

• Must submit a transcript, resume and a letter of recommendation.

• Must gain ¾ approval of active brothers on campus.
