Computerized Front Desk Sign-In When visiting Women at Work, clients can now sign-in using

a quick, easy-to-use computer station at the front desk. The new sign-in procedure allows Women At Work to understand which services are being used and the frequency. More importantly, it will also help the center distinguish between the number of visitors and the number of times each client visits the center. Capturing and quantifying this data is crucial for obtaining foundation grants, which help subsidize services and keeps costs affordable.

Using the computerized sign in station is easy. Clients simply type in their phone number and click a button. Once she or he has used the system it will recognize their number, moving them to a screen where they can simply click on the services they’ll be using that day. First time users will be prompted to another screen to quickly register name and number for future use.

It’s that simple! Volunteers at the front desk are of course always available to help if necessary. We hope to see you soon!

Women At Work Moves Forward with Technology

Women At Work career counselors have observed that an

increasing number of clients have expressed an interest in moving from employment to self-employment in recent years. There are two primary motivations for undertaking the additional learning curve involved in starting a business. One motivation is the passion for offering

a particular product or service, and the other is discovering an alternative to finding a job in today’s challenging labor market.

The new workshop, Becoming Your Own Boss: Could It Work for You? appeals to those with one or both of these motivations. One workshop participant had already started her business, offering a line of nutrition and skin care products that provide the enhanced wellbeing she values so highly, but she came to get ideas for refining her business and share how she overcame her fear of marketing while encouraging others. Another moved directly from the workshop to Job Club, to continue her job search while simultaneously considering the possibility of starting a business of her own.

During the two workshop sessions and through homework assignments, participants complete several exercises to examine their motivators, goals, obstacles and fears about becoming self-employed. Some express the desire not to have a boss any longer and others are seeking to follow their own business ethics.

The workshop enables clients to consider the product or service they might offer and who might be their target client. Their ideas include everything from artistic items offered online to personal organization services. Participants each review their work life and complete an inventory of strengths and weaknesses. They consider what support they would need as a business owner or partner and learn of many types of available resources to assist them in exploring this completely new way of making a living.

Your

Could It Work For You?

Workshop Fills Client Need

Client Obtains a Job while planning for her future business

Nancy met with a career counselor to review her long term and short term goals after working part time in property management and taking classes at PCC for a few years. This

helped her confirm that her long term goal is to become self-employed. However, both of her business ideas require capital to get started.

Therefore, in the short term she wanted to find a full time position offering the economic security she’s been seeking. Nancy is relieved that she found a job at an innovative local security products company. This job is satisfying her financial needs while she completes her coursework. Another important benefit is that the company is within walking distance of her home, which reduces her transportation budget to nearly zero. (Nancy said she “will need to drive to work occasionally.”)

For several years VONS has been a consistent participant in our Employer Forum Events. As a valued partner they are now offering to provide career opportunities for Women At Work

job seekers on a new level.

Melissa Casillas, a 12-year career veteran with VONS, will be representing their Human Resources Department. She will be working with our Job Developer, Perla Bernal to provide the right tools and give tips for career development in such areas as resume critique, interview skills and more.

Applying for positions can be challenging, so Melissa will offer interested job seekers guidance in applying for current VONS openings in Retail, Distribution, Backstage, or Supply areas.

Melissa began her career search in 2006 by stopping at Women At Work. She said, “Just like I began and have continued my career journey at VONS, I hope I can help individuals from Women At Work get that same opportunity”.

Melissa added, “VONS is and always has been committed to supporting the communities they serve. At VONS Safeway we make sure our employees are well taken care of. We recognize that their hard work and dedication are the driving force behind our success, and we continually look for additional ways to reward them. Our employees enjoy competitive pay and excellent benefits, along with a positive work environment built on mutual respect and professionalism.”
