When it was inventedThe game was invented in 1969 by now retired UC Davis associate

athletic director of intramural sports and sport clubs, Gary Colberg. Noticing

howmuch fun the water polo team was having, Mr. Colberg thought up

the ideaof using tubes so that people with no experience in water polo could

stillenjoy the game.

Water polo is a rapidly growing sport in the United States andinternationally as well.

IntroductionWater polo is a team water sport that combines some elements of swimming and basketball. Teams are composed of about 12 players, depending on rules of the league. Seven players are in the pool at a

time, which includes one goalie and six field players. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most points, witheach goal being worth one point. -One player on each team is designated the goalkeeper, assigned to deflect or catch any shots at goal. The goalkeeper is the only player who can touch the ball with both hands at any time.- Players are not permitted to push the ball underwater. -There are seven players in the water from each team at one time. There are six fielders and one goalkeeper.

Usually, men play four 7-minute quarters while women play four 6-minute

Quarters.

Starting playAt the start of each period, teams line up on their own goalline. Three players go to both sides of the goal; the goal-keeper starts in the goal. At the referee's whistle, bothteams swim to midpoint of the field (known as the sprint orthe swim-off).In International competition the ball is placed in the middleof the pool and is supported with a floating ring. The firstteam to recover the ball becomes the attacker until a goalis scored or the defenders recover the ball. After a goal isscored, the teams line up anywhere within their halves ofplay, but usually along the midpoint of the pool.

Water polo equipment-Uniforms consist of swimsuits for both men and women, as well as a cap

onthe head with plastic ear protectors and the player's number on bothsides. Away teams wear lighter color caps, while home wears the darkercolor.

-Ball: A water polo ball is constructed of waterproof material to allow it tofloat on the water. The cover has a special texture so it won't slip fromthe hands of a player. The size of the ball is different for men's andwomen's games.

-Caps: A water polo cap is used to protect the players' heads and ears, and to identify them. Home team field players wear numbered light or darkcaps, and visiting team field players wear contrasting caps. Both startinggoalkeepers wear (quartered) red caps, numbered "1“.
