From the BoardTo all PWDCC Breeders andthose who currently participate in the Breeder Program on thePWDCC web site

For 2014, Breeder ProgramPolicy Updates:

The PWDCC Breeder Program was devel-oped to support PWDCC Rescue to coverthe expenses of assessing and re-homingPWDs and to support the club in general.

As a breeder member you agree to support health testing for our breed inyour breeding program.

Our member Code of Ethics requires allmember breeders to assume life-longresponsibility for re-homing all puppiesthey produce should this be necessary. But we are often faced with non-memberbreeders who don’t take responsibility fortheir dogs and PWDCC Rescue steps in tore-home these unfortunate dogs.

Member breeders* can support Rescue bysigning on to the Program and additional-ly have the benefit of being listed on theaward-winning PWDCC web site.

Here’s how it works:A $100.00 contribution per year gets youon the PWDCC site. There is an addition-al $50.00 charge for a web site linkshould you require this. When you have alitter, just forward a completed Litter Duelisting form to Deirdre Hall, our BreederContact. Click on the Membership buttonat www.pwdcc.org to download the form.

Both sire and dam need to be registeredin the PWD Health and Litter data base. This data base can be accessed onlinethrough the PWDCA web site under thedatabase icon. All health clearances mustbe present on the data base, includingJDCM test results on both the sire andthe dam. European or other internationalstud dogs are exempt from the require-ment for registration in the data base buthealth documentation is still required. One parent must be tested for IC13. Acurrent CERF or ECR is required. A CHICcertificate designation will be accepted as“Clear by Parentage” for one generationonly. The web listing is updated January31st of each year with renewed partici-pants. (updated January 16, 2011)

When a bitch is owned by two or morebreeders, all breeders have to be mem-bers of the PWDCC in good standing andbreeders have to be participants of thePWDCC Breeder Program and be individu-ally listed on the PWDCC web site. Theexception to this rule is if the co-breederis a resident of the United States or otherinternational location.

Once all health clearances are verified,Deirdre will activate the LITTER DUEENTRY. New this year: Full disclosure oflitter information (i.e. sire and dam) andhealth testing information will be avail-able for the public to view. Litters can beposted 4 weeks prior to whelping. Andmultiple litters can be posted at once.Remember to let Deirdre know when yourpups are sold so that she can removeyour listing. You can post additional litters during the calendar year for noadditional cost.

You can view the current list athttp://www.pwdcc.org by clicking NewPuppy, then click Breeder Contact.

*You must be a member of the PWDCC forat least two years before participating inthis program. (effective November 5, 2013)

Participation in the Breeder Program doesnot confer endorsement by the PWDCC of any kennel, breeding program or breedingpractices.

ThePresident’sLetterOn the home front, we welcome a new Ontario Branch

board. Catherine Gadd, Chair, Gillian Goldschmidt, Vice

Chair, Louise Rossen, Secretary/Treasurer and Kathy Hick

are the new Branch Executive members.

We are looking forward to our spring and summer training

events and water trials. Special thanks to all of our volun-

teers who continue to make our events a success. Your

dedication and hard work does not go unnoticed. We have

a Regional Specialty planned at the Kilbride Kennel Club

show this August and hope that many of you will attend.

Details on our National Specialty in British Columbia will

be provided in the next Waterlog. Judging panels for both

of these events will be announced shortly. Anyone who

wishes to volunteer to assist with either of these events

can contact myself or Mavis McClintock.

We continue to need support in our rescue program. Please

continue to send resources for your area, i.e. reputable

boarding facilities, veterinarians, groomers and trainers to

Michelle Jackson ([email protected]) for our database.

Wishing everyone many continued successes for 2014.

Sharon Lapstra, MSW, RSW,

President, PWDCC

Well another year has come to an end and a new year has

begun! And what a year we had for our small breed club in

2013! Many Canadians ventured forth to the US National

Specialty in Albany, Oregon as well as to the PWD Congress

in Portugal. It is so great to see the enthusiasm, passion

and dedication that our small breed club has for our

beloved dogs.

Our dogs were very well represented in the winner’s ring at

the US National Specialty and we are so proud of all of our

placements by Canadian dogs. We made breed history in

Futurity. It is the first time that a Canadian breeder has

won Futurity Stakes in the conformation ring. The Best of

Breed Winner was also a Canadian bred dog. Matisse, our

cover dog, has the most Best in Show wins in the history of

our breed in the United States And Matisse is the first

PWD to win the AKC/Eukanuba National Specialty. We are

also creating a legacy for the designation of Superdog, well

done Leslie and Tammy! Way to go everyone. We should be

very proud of our contributions.

It is only through our dedication and the commitment to

excellence that great things are achieved. So thanks every-

one for making us proud. Here’s looking forward to a won-

derful 2014 with continued successes for our dogs in all

performance venues, both at home and internationally.

Motion Pat moves to accept the Minutes of Oct 8th2013 PWDCC meeting, seconded by Jennifer.Approved.

Business Arising from MinutesFacebook – Welcome Laura Dolman – presentationand discussion.

Laura was rescheduled for the December meeting.

Regional Specialty at Kilbride – Roslyn and SharonRoslyn stated that she is waiting for the ShowSecretary’s report and invoices to close the books.

BC Booster - Lower Mainland Dog Fanciers,AbbotsfordMavis explained that the booster was a success. Itwas a quality entry. The show entries were downwith approximately 500 entries. This was possiblydue to Parvo in the general vicinity and a change tothe venue. In the past years they used to get 1900– 2000 entries.

Mavis: described the venue as having a series ofbarns connected to one another. There was a groom-ing barn, a barn with a dirt floor where the PWDswere shown, a barn with indoor washrooms and thiswas where other breeds were shown here. It is notthe best venue for specialty, but there is lots ofparking. Next year the venue will be in Chilliwack.

Booster Dec 28 2013 – Elora, KitchenerSharon is in the process of finalizing the judges andprizes for the Dec Booster. She stated that usuallythere is approximately an entry of 25 dogs.

Breeder Referral ProgramThe club is revising the Breeder Referral Programapplication form. The BRP committee met and hasmade some recommendations:To qualify for the program, breeders must supporthealth testing. Mavis suggested that the club agree to ask forhealth testing and accept the CHIC certificate Clearby Parentage Program.

Breeders should post the health testing informationthrough the PWDHL database.

Mavis: agrees that it is a good accountability stepand good reason to use it.

Bitch and sire of posted litters must be in the data-base. Breeders could also still send health informa-tion to Deirdre. Sharon stated that breeders shouldbe encouraged to use this database.

Pat: why would a breeder not want to enter info intothe database? It provides a listing of registeredname and numbers plus proof of health testing.

Sharon: stated that using the database will con-tribute to the overall goal of protecting the breed. The Breeder Program supports rescue and healthtesting.

New changes to the application include but not limited to:

- Sire and Dam health tested

- Bitch owned by two breeders, both breeders needto be listed, except where a co-breeder lives out ofCanada.

- Recommendation that breeders participate in the

lic. She suggested that a hand out to the generalpublic explaining the etiquette and explaining whatspectators can and can’t do.

Next year suggestions:• The club should ask for volunteers to assist withboundaries, possibly have a pop-up, explaining thedifferent levels of the trials on a brochure.

• Encourage on-line registration• Encourage breeders to ask their puppy owners tocome out and see/participate in the Trial

There were positive comments from new members

Booster Show – Elora Kennel Club and B.C. BoosterThe date for the B.C. Booster is October 25, 2013.The Judge is Dan Erickson from Sweden. Mavisexplained that she wasn’t sure if there would begood participation due to Parvo had been diagnosedin dogs in the area.

The date for the Ontario Booster is December 28,2013 at the Elora Kennel Club. The Judge is KeikoKawada. The prizes haven’t been selected yet butprizes for Best of Breed, Best of Opposite, BestPuppy, and Best Baby Puppy. More to come.

Mavis will puttogether projected budget/expenses so we can dis-cuss at next meeting in November.

Mavis will get more details about food, hospitality, hotels for the next meeting.

Water Trial, August 25th 2013 – Laurel CreekConservation, Waterloo – Patti and PatPat finalized the budget for the Water Trials. Shestated that Cathy Gadd was in charge of expensesand she did a great job keeping expenses in line. There had been a decision to reduce the entrancefee to $40.00 per team per day. Pat had budgetedfor $45.00 per team per day. Pat recommended thatnext year we raise the entrance fee back up to$45.00 per team per day.

Pat suggested we promote member donations andask members to volunteer.

Motion Pat made a motion to donate $100 to LaurelCreek. Kathy Dick seconded the motion. Pat willwrite a cheque and send a thank you card of appre-ciation for everything they have done to accommo-date the Trial.

Sharon asked if we as a club should welcome mem-bers of the general public to the Water Trial toobserve the Trial. Pat said we would have to wordthe invitation carefully to ensure that people don’tshow up with kayaks etc. and distract the trial andthat the public understood the etiquette of the trialwhich is “quiet and respectful”.

The entrance fee to the park is $5.50 per day. Andystated that Alberta Water Trials welcomes the gener-al public as it’s a great way to promote the breed.Andy stated that they roped off the lake area so thegeneral public could not get too close to the watertrails.

Mavis stated that B.C. had their water trials on theIsland and the club assured the municipality thelocal event would be admissible to the general pub-

- Breeders must be a member of the club for twoyears before being eligible to be added to theBreeder Program.

Roslyn explained that one breeder did drop off theProgram because she/he didn’t agree with addingthe recommendation of mandatory participation inthe New Puppy Program. It was suggested that thecost of $20 for this membership could be passed onto the purchasers.

Sharon: stated that new puppy owners are providedwith a supportive network and connect with otherPWD owners.

Pat: We have 13 breeders listed in the program. Dowe know how many breeder members are not in theprogram? Roslyn replied about 20 breeders in theclub that were not on the breeders list. There aremany reasons for this. Most breeders do not needassistance selling their puppies. The breeders fromQuebec would like to see the web site have aFrench language section.

Mavis: purchasers should do their homework.

Sharon: will revise the form and circulate to boardmembers.

Mavis: made a motion to accept the revisions to theBreeder Program 2014. Patti seconded the motion.
