Our thanks to PWDCA member, Penny

Wetmore from Belle Plaine Minnesota,

who shared her candid photography of

the PWDCA Specialty with us.

From the BoardTo all PWDCC Breeders andthose who currently participatein the Breeder Program on thePWDCC web site

For 2013 the Breeder Programwill revert to 2011 Policy:

The PWDCC Breeder Program was devel-oped to support PWDCC Rescue to coverthe expenses of assessing and re-homingPWDs. Our Member Code of Ethicsrequires all member breeders to assumelife-long responsibility for re-homing allpuppies they produce should this be nec-essary. But, as the PWDCC is often facedwith non-member breeders who don’t takeresponsibility for their dogs, PWDCCRescue steps in to re-home these dogs.

To qualifiy for this program, breeders mustbe members of the PWDCC for at least oneyear before being eligible to be on theBreeders’ List. (Updated March 18, 2010).Member breeders can support Rescue bysigning on to the Program and additionallyhave the benefit of being listed on theaward-winning PWDCC web site.

At the beginning of each fiscal/calendaryear, the breeder submits his/her applica-tion, the application is posted on the clubsite and mailed with membership applica-tions in October:

• a $100.00 contribution per year securesa breeder listing on the PWDCC site in theNEW PUPPY/BREEDER CONTACT section.

• There is an additional $50.00 charge fora web site link should you require this.

The web site listing is updated January31st of each year with renewed partici-pants. (Updated January 16, 2011.)

Litter Due ListingEach breeder participating in a fiscal yearcan list all or any litters due by sending acompleted Litter Due form with all thesupporting health documents currentlyrequired by the PWDCC or, check the PWDHealth & Litter Database box if your dog islisted. It is recommended that all breedingdogs and each litter is registered with thePWD Health and Litter Database. AllHealth and Litter information is nowaccepted through the PWD Health andLitter Database, online through the PWDCAweb site.

When a bitch is owned by two or morebreeders, all breeders have to be membersof the PWDCC in good standing and allbreeders have to be participants of thePWDCC Breeder Program and be individu-ally listed on the PWDCC web site.

The Breeder Contact coordinator activatesthe LITTER DUE ENTRY. It is requestedthat all breeders notify the coordinatorwhen their litter is sold. At that time thelisting is removed.

Participation in the Breeder Programdoes not confer endorsement by thePWDCC of any kennel, its breedingprogram or practices.

ThePresident’sLetterYour executive for 2013 will be, from west to east,

Lori Crandlemire, British Columbia; Andy Gamache,

Prairies; Secretary Ann Weiszmann, Ontario; Treasurer

Pat Vokes, Ontario; President Herb Szauerzopf, Ontario;

Harry Berube, Ontario; Glenda Newton, Quebec; and

Cindy Troke, Atlantic.

We look to our members to welcome the new executive

and help them make the PWDCC a more successful

organization.

Finally after several years of hard work and service,

Sharon Lapstra our Waterlog editor, has given her resig-

nation. Thank you for all you hard work. We are seeking

an editor and person(s) to assist, write/edit articles, and

take pictures of events. Roslyn will continue to design

and produce the Waterlog, so please contact her if you

are interested in taking on the editor’s role.

Hope everyone enjoys their holiday season,

Herb

Herb Szauerzopf, PresidentPortuguese Water Dog Club of CanadaNovember 2012

Greeting all,

Another year is nearly done and looking back, we’ve

enjoyed lots of activity in the Portuguese Water Dog

community.

We have hosted many successful events. In Water Work,

three successful Water trials were held in Ontario and

Alberta, and they were larger than ever. Our National

Specialty show was well planned in a core part of the

country, however, like dogs shows everwhere, attendance

was smaller than anticipated. Even so, we were the

largest breed entry at the Kilbride show and the largest

Specialty.

For 2013, our executive is changing. Board member

Judy Cheguis has resigned, and Roslyn Eskind, a long

time anchor of the executive, Secretary/Treasurer has

also resigned. Vice President Mindy Selby has complet-

ed her six year term as per our policies. All will be

missed and we thank each of them for their contribution

to the running of your club.

Riglee After being sec-

ond for two years running in the 2010

and 2011 Superdog competitions, Riglee

proves there’s truth to the adage “third

time lucky”. For the past three years

Riglee has competed in Superdog at

the PWDCA National Specialty. Each

year she has earned eighteen Superdog

points. In 2010 and 2011, eighteen

points was second place but in 2012 it

was a mere half point ahead of the sec-

ond place dog and enough for Riglee

to earn the PWDCA National Specialty’s

Superdog title from a talented field of

enthusiastic Superdog contenders.

Superdog is a versatility award honor-

ing the Portuguese Water Dog who

accumulates the most points based on a

formula which encourages handlers to

participate in a variety of events at a

National Specialty. Each dog can earn

points for qualifying scores, class place-

ments, breed wins or High in Trial and

High Combined scores at all levels in

water, tracking, agility, obedience, rally

and conformation. This year the rules for

point accumulation were revised to

include an additional one point for any

dog and handler teams competing

together in conformation and at least

three other Superdog venues.

Riglee collected Superdog points in all

the performance events (tracking, water,

Rescue Issue Mari Szauerzopf, PWDCC RescueCoordinator, joined the meeting and reported:

This September a PWD owner who had behaviourissues with her dog born March 2005, bred by aPWDCC breeder, contacted Mari Szauerzopf. Marihad conversations with both the owner and thebreeder. Mari advised the owner to contact herbreeder and the owner did. The owner asked forhelp with either taking back the dog, or with otheradvice. “if you’re not able to take back the dog, wehave to explore other options”. After the owner letthe breeder know she had spoken with PWDCCRescue, the breeder suggested the owner send thedog back to her for assessment, and the ownerasked how to do this, how is the dog assessed, andcan the dog be re-homed if possible. The ownersend several emails asking about details and got nofurther replies from the breeder. The owner eventu-ally euthanized the dog as she felt the breeder was-n’t responding and that it would be preferable andmore humane to put the dog to sleep with his familyby his side. The owner then requested that Mari‘take this issue to where it needs to go’ as theowner felt the breeder was irresponsible in not fol-lowing through with her. The breeder said she didn’treceive the owner’s later emails. It would appearthat the breeder may have violated our Code ofEthics re assuming life-long responsibility for dogsbred. The breeder could have been more proactivein getting the dog back, more supportive emotional-ly, and involved in speaking with her vet, arrange fora behaviorist, etc. to help determine if truly eutha-nization was the only course for this dog. For us toact we need a written complaint by a memberagainst a member. The board can then convene ahearing. Herb reviewed the terms of a board hear-ing. Herb will coordinate obtaining a written state-ment from the owner.

Next meeting Thursday October 11th 8pm EST.

Breeder SurveyAs we have changed the Policy back to the 2011rules, is there now a need for the survey? Or pro-ceed to try to determine the resistance and lack ofcompliance? Will we get honest information or par-ticipation? Breeders who didn’t comply why wouldthey respond? Often Breeders hate the paperworkattached to all aspects of registering, etc. Perhapswe can learn an easier method of reporting. Oneissue is co-bred bitches that are owned byAmericans and having the requirement that bothco-breeders join the PWDCC and the list. How canwe change policy without data to support ourchanges. The survey could consist of each line ofthe policy

back next year. Perhaps do less, just do one hospi-tality event. The Welcome party food was excellent,we made money on that, there were 11/12 peoplewho came to the Banquet who didn’t come to theParty. Kilbride did not follow through and pay us forthe tent as they had promised.

Roslyn Eskind has notified Herb that she will resignas Director/Secretary/Treasurer effective immediate-ly, but will stay on to effect a smooth transition tothe new officers through to the end of the year.

Mindy Selby’s board term ended in March, she hasbeen on the board 6 years. She cannot stay on theboard.

Nominating committee headed by the President.Henri and Lori are willing to stay on. Herb will con-tact Glenda. We need Alberta, Quebec, Ontario,Maritimes, and two officers VP andSecretary/Treasurer. The nominating committee isone board member and two members at large. Herbwill seek these members.

Henri will ask Cindy if she’ll stay on as BreederContact for 2013 under the reverted policy.

Henri: given the hard work that Roz has put into theclub, you have given so much for so long, I have aprofound respect for the amount of work you havedone for the club, it wouldn’t be fair to ask you tostay. Herb: you will be badly missed and hard toreplace even with two people.

Dogs in Canada AnnualShowcase Ad Cost is$950.00, 15% discount (March 2011), contact isPaul Madeiros.

Our advertorial ad has become the standard forother clubs. Herb moves we again put in the ad,Henri seconds. Approved.

The image was of Coco. Can we change it? How dowe decide? Herb will send request. Roslyn will cir-culate both the advertorial and the 1/2 page ad weran in the previous annual.

Regional Specialty Doug Windsor, Elora show chair, email questions re: trophies, ribbons, sweepstakes, junior handling. Sweepstakes was decided earlier,we won’t have it. Let’s just offer a prize to the high-est scoring junior handled PWD on the Specialtyday. Timing for event, should have about 25 dogs, one hour of judging. 11 am and then have a lunch-eon at 12:30. Or have it at 1pm and then haveluncheon. Are we doing a pot luck or use the facilitycaterers? Herb will contact Doug Windsor and thecaterers. Herb will order ribbons from MJN, sizingdown from the National Specialty categories.

Breeder Seminar Herb has been requested to give aseminar to a judges’ group in October. Herb hasbeen to two presentations, one live and one webinar. The club doesn’t own a crystal projector, however,we do have our Powerpoint presentation. Henri canprobably get a projector. Irene Latchford is the con-tact. The seminar needs updating with better qualityphotographs, national specialty winners, and PWDFacebook pages with historical images and morecomplexity on content. The board should approve allchanges and the text in the presentation shouldremain essentially the standard, the verbal andhands-on presentation can be more in-depth. ThePWDCA Illustrated Standard is now being circulat-ed, and perhaps we can consider asking to use itonce it’s approved by that club to update our semi-nar. Roslyn will send Herb the current seminar, witha copy of the judges’ certificate and judges’ ques-tionnaire. We seem to have a request once every 2years. Motion by Henri that Herb be authorized togive the Judges’ Seminar to the group whoapproached him, to be presented in November (Herbto supply the details of group and date), secondedby Roslyn. Approved.

Breeder Program SurveyNo one is following the program with the changesfor 2012. Recently a breeder has been approachedtwice to send in health data on the sire and damand for puppy pkgs and not complied. Should we dothe survey, and look for suggestions of people notcomplying with the current regulations? Should wemothball the current list until we do the survey?Should we remove people who are not complying? This list was started to fund Rescue, do we needfunding or are there sufficient funds? Suggest werevert to old Policy for 2011 and split revenue withRescue and PWDCC. Effective October 1st, thePWDCC Breeder Program will revert to 2011Regulations. And we need to clarify that dogs usedwith frozen semen should have testing current withregulations at the time of collection. An Albertabreeder left the list over the issue of mandatory par-ticipation in the Puppy Program, is this programcontributing to membership retention and revenue? We retain about 7% which is not significant to ourmembership but it is a decent retention statistically. This program helps the breeder with support topuppy people. Two litters of 10 costs a breeder$550.00 a year is this perceived as good value? That is on $40,000 income, and the cost can bepassed on to the new owners.

Mindy leaves the meeting.

Motion by Herb that the Breeder program reverts to2011 regulations, with revenue split between withthe PWDCC and Rescue in 2013. Add to the website header: We recommend the following healthtests (listing them) and you should check with yourbreeder to ascertain if his/her dogs are health test-ed, seconded by Roslyn. Approved.

Discussion: adding CERF for puppies should bereferenced in our Health Testing Policy elsewhere, with an explanation of the re-emergence ofMicrophthalmia. Herb will write about the impor-tance of checking puppies’ eyes for the web site.

Motion by Herb that the PWDCC recommends thatall puppies be CERF’d before delivery to the pur-chaser, seconded by Henri. Approved.

Motion by Herb that the PWDCC recognizes CHICcertification for health testing verification, secondedby Henri. Approved.

Through DNA testing of offspring, for one generationyou can clear offspring for their testing.

Specialty ReportTrophies left over from the Specialty, will be offeredto be used for the December Regional Specialty.Specialty reconciliation shows a loss of $xxxxx. Theissue is entry numbers, we were the largest entry, however, less than 2006 numbers. Kilbride wants us

with agree/disagree and why. If the data leads us tothe lowest common denominator, perhaps the clubshouldn’t have a Breeder/Puppy list. Henri is disap-pointed at the lack of participation, and breedersnot doing ‘what is best for the breed’. There wasample opportunity to contact us with concerns. Noone contacted us. The list is effective at supplyingleads. We are providing a service to breeders. If wedon’t do a survey, where do we go? Henri led thecharge to upgrade requirements for participation onthe Breeder list. With the backing off of the newPolicy we decided to give it a moratorium for a year, and emphasize that the list is a paid advertising.Herb, will quit the club before he has to policebreeders, felt from the beginning that it wouldn’twork. Henri had faith in mankind that they wouldparticipate. We ran the risk of damaging the cluband we don’t have enough members to do that. Aprimary purpose of the club is education for breed-ers and for new puppy owners who go to the website for information. Can we have a check list oftesting required before breeding that is printable? Now at the top of the list is a disclaimer and thereis a link to our health page, that could be printedout. Are we having reports with health issues com-ing up after purchase? Would a brand new personactually read and understand the meaning of thedisclaimer. We will make the text bold and list the6 tests to be done. If a breeder knowingly breedsdogs without testing and the resulting pups willdevelop preventable conditions that is an ethicalproblem.

The new 2013 membership forms sent to you showson the Breeder Form that the Policy has reverted to2011 policy and with the contact info of the newtreasurer. The forms should be approved by theboard.

Herb may have sourced a new Secretary, she willlet him know if she feels she can take this on.

Regional Specialty Buffet prepared by the caterersat Bingemans would cost $32.95 including tax/gra-tuity, 2 meats, vegetable, coffee and dessert. Herbcould sample the menu as he is 1/2 hour away.Perhaps it is rather expensive for a lunch at thattime of year. Let’s organize a pot luck, we have tra-ditionally had fabulous foods when we’ve done this, suggested schedule is Specialty at 10, Booster at12, pot luck after. The potluck dinner will be addedto the Sept. Waterlog.

We will order ribbons from MJN, classes includeStud dog, Brood bitch, Baby puppy, High JuniorHandler from Elora classes, Veterans.

Judges’ Seminar We have a Judges’ handout thatgoes with the Judges’ Seminar, it is 32 pages print-ed two sides, with 2 slides per page and the oppo-site page is lined for notes. We also provide a cer-tificate for Judges (proof of attendance required bythe CKC) and a questionnaire. The breed standardcomparison is $2.25 each, and the handout is$10.00-11.00 plus HST. Does the club want to pro-vide this package? This is helpful as they can maketheir own notes, sending a PDF before or after anevent. We can see how it is received this time andmake a decision after this presentation. 25 copieswill be printed. And after this event we need toupdate photos with historically significant dogs. Alsoafter the presentation tomorrow, ask who would liketo receive a PDF, this might be useful for future ref-erence. Both delivery systems might be good. Henriis providing a projector, and bought a cable neededto connect the projector to the computer runningthe presentation.

Rescue Issue tabled to the next meeting

CERF text that Herb was going to write to add tothe club website, tabled to the next meeting.

New directors will be invited to the December meet-ing, Pat Vokes, Andy Gamache, an new secretaryand NL director.

Alberta Water Trial We have no documentation, entryfunds for the trial, etc. It was mailed last week, thetrial was held the September long weekend.

AGM Should an announcement go out to the mem-bership? Yes let’s proceed with the announcementhosted by the same conferencing survey. February21st will be the date.

Next meeting scheduled for December 13th 8pmEST.

Motion to adjourn moved by Henri, seconded byRoslyn. Approved.

Cover PupMy big name is CH Deblon's Glen Abbey at Ridgehaven

AWD, RA, CGN but everyone calls me Abbey.

I love to train but I really like to give my Mom fits when we

are competing in any dog sports by throwing her some new

and/or unexpected behaviours. I seem to need to do this in

any of those sports where I actually have to stay still for any

length of time… what's with that staying still thing anyway,

I AM supposed to be a working dog!

This year I earned my Rally Novice, Rally Advanced, Canine

Good Neighbour and Apprentice Water Dog Titles. I also got 2

legs on my Rally Excellent Title. I had fun in Conformation this

year except I had to put up with my Mom on the end of the

leash....she is such a novice at this sport! Anyway, we made it

to the final line up at the Canadian National under Judge Edd

Bivin and we placed in our class at the U.S. National under

Judge Steve Dostie.

Next year I am hoping to finish my Rally Excellent Title, do

some tracking, continue with water work and have puppies

too.

My Mom describes me as beautiful, busy, mischievous, a great

mover with lots of working drive and a sense of humour. She

also says she wouldn't have it any other way.

Abbey is loved by Karen Matthews and lives with her

packmates Ryder, Fairway and Chip in the Niagara

Peninsula of Ontario.
