I forgot to mention them in the previ-ous post but here are they the best 15Egyptian lms in 100 years chosen by20 critics

    1. The Mummy by Shady Abd

El-Salam in year 1975 starring NadiaLotfy and Mohamed Marri Well it isnot like the American Mummy for sure, it is much more serious ,to put it insimple words its story happens in the19th century about the tomb raidingin Luxor , it was highly received insideand outside Egypt , this is the only longlm for Abd El-Salam before his death, Abd El-Salam was mad about ancientEgypt , already if you watch Cleopat-ra then you must know that the manwho designed the entrance of Cleop-atra in Rome was him , he had anoth-er fantastic short movie called Thewise peasant based upon the famousancient Egyptian story with the samename , he died while preparing for hislong lm about the life of king Akhen-aton

    2. The sin by Henry Barkat inyear 1965 starring Fatan Hamma andAbdullah Guith Not cheerful at all ,I think it was based upon Youssef Idrisshort story , I am not quite sure , it isabout the tough life of the peasantswho work from one eld to another , itis very sad and I dont usual completeit till the end

    3. The Land by Youssef Chahin inyear 1960 starring Mahmoud El-Maligyand Nagwa Ibrahim This is from thevery few lms I like for Youssef Chahin, also about the struggle of the Egyp-tian peasants in early 20th century ,Mahmoud El-Maligy proved to be a di-amond in the mud ,his unforgettableperformance deserved an Oscar, thesoundtrack was a historical especially

the ending music by Ali Ismail

    powered by ODEO

    4. A Beginning and an Ending by Salah Abu Seif in year 1960starring Omar El-Sherif and Farid Sha-waky Big drama with black comedyfrom Farid , great performance of Sa-naa Gamil and it is enough to knowthat it was based upon a novel with thesame name written by Naguib Mahfouz, Shawaky proved to be a great come-dian in that dull lm

    5. The Bus driver by Atef El-Taib ,in year 1983 starring Nour

El-Sherif Unfortunately among alllate El-Taib lms ,I didnt see this onebut I heard and read it was great , lateEl-Taib was famous for his realistic po-litical lms

    6. The Collar and the bracelet by Khairy Beshara in year 1986starring Sherihan ,Ezzat El-Alali andFardos Abd El-Hamid drama and fam-ily tragedy in upper Egypt ,so dull

    7. The Well by Kamal Salim inyear 1939 starring Hussein Sadaky andFatima Rushidy this lm is a remarkin the history of Egyptian cinema , aclassical realistic piece of Art with gi-ants in it , it wasnt funny at all a ro -mantic drama , Rushidy told Sadaky in

it {I love you Mohamed} , by the wayAngelina Jolie Arabic tattoo means thewell

    8. Cairo Station Bad El-Hadid by Youssef Chahin in year 1958starring Youssef Chahin ,Hend Rostomand Farid Shawaky This lm when itwas rst shown back in 1958 made thefans of Farid Shawaky destroy the cin-emas , the psychological drama andalso the acting of Chahin were not re-spected by many back then, a pieceof trivia one of the leading men in theEgyptian Cinema ,shokary Sarhan wascasted for the leading role presentedlater by Chahin , Sarhan was chosen bythen the produced turned him downwhen he asked for 50 Egyptian Poundsmore of his salary

    9. The Wife of an important man by Mohamed Khan in 1988starring Ahmed Zaky and Marvet AminThis lm as far as I know is shown inthe police academy in Egypt to makethe students beware of their police in-uence in their life , but with no use, Zaki was one hell of a bad ass policeofcer who should be killed , the endwas dramatic

    10. The Flirtation of girls byAnwar Wagdy in year 1949 starring Na-guib El-Rahany ,Laila Murad and AnwarWagdi A romantic comedy , a littlebit of black comedy , great fantastic

music where Laila Murad Sang one ofits most romantic songs ,the best Ara-bic Tango with music of Mohamed AbdEl-Wahab who appeared in the lmand also sang in it and the lyrics ofHussien El-Sayed

    11. Death or Life by KamalEl-Sheikh in year 1954 starring EmadHamdy and Madiha Youssry I dontknow how this silly lm made to thelist ,it isnot the best lms for El-Sheikhnor for Youssry or for Hamdy , for Godsake it is the movie of {in the medicinethere a deadly poison} already a pieceof trivia this lm was made to makepeople understand the importance ofthe Egyptian 911 police alike when theservice entered Egypt , it was very sil-

ly , in fact it was a comedy of itselfwhen I remember it

    12. The Nightingale prayer by Henry Barkat in year 1959 star-ring Fatan Hamma and Ahmed Mazharbased upon a novel by Taha HusseinWhat can I say a sad love story ,theold story of vengeance that turns tolove and guilt , in the heart of the up-per Egypt , the lm is magical despiteits sadness ,it is very sad and ends verysad , this lm was one piece of art thatcould have reached to the Oscars butit did not because Ahmed Mazhar wasa close friend to President Nasser

    13. The innocent by Atef El-Tayeb in year 1986 starring AhmedZaki One of the most important po-litical lms in Egypt , it is said that it

is the favorite for the MB

    14. The Kitkat by DawoodAbd El-Sayed in year 1991 starringMahmoud Abd El-Aziz It reminds mewith the scent of a woman , seriously Idont nd it that great or special ,yesit is good but come on there are otherimportant lms than this by the waythe Kitkat is a populated area in Gizanot the chocolate

    15. Terrorism and Kebab -by Sherif Aref in year 1992 , starringAdel Emam and Youssra ,story by Wa-hid Hammed at last a real political

comedy , despite all what you thinkabout Emam and Hammed , this lmis great and what is great about it wasabout this era , the era of PresidentMubarak

Ok here is the list now if we read itagain we will nd that Henry Bar-kat, Youssef Chahin and Atef El-Tayebmade to the list twice more than anydirector, good for them

Yet the big surprise that there areother great lms for great directorsthat was included like the great lmSomething from Fear by Hussein Ka-mal and starring Shadia who present-ed a great performance

Also there are other directors in thelists who should have mentioned morethan one time like Salah Abu Seif as Ihinted before this man got a very im-portant list like Between Heaven andearth ,Raya and Skina, The Startand Cairo 30

Another two lms I remember shouldhave been included are Song on thepass by Ali Abd El-Khalk about the1967 six days war and The Karnak byAli Badrakhan and starring Soad Hosni

Anyhow this is a critics list not thepeople list

Let the War Games start : Video wars

News Network began to post someseries of videos online claiming that

those clips are a scandal to GeneralAbdel Fatah El Sisi and the army. Therst video clip in the series was a veryinteresting. Its title was : El Sisi : Themilitary spokesperson is an importantattraction factor for ladies !! Oh yes

#Sudan_Revolts : It is Martyrs FridayGraphic

It is Friday and people started to pro-test against El Bashir regime while fac-ing his security forces and their weap-ons bravely as usual. This is the fourthday the Sudanese head to the streetprotesting not only now against thelift of subsidies but against the massa-cre that took place in the country.

    The best

    15 Egyptian

    flms in

    100years

There were thousands at Rab3a though, and with all fairnessInjy I dont think you can judge every single individuals po-litical convictions by them looking brotherhood or lookingnon-brotherhood. Lets not fall into the traps of stereotyp-ing here. There are plenty of testimonies of protesters whosaid they are not MB, but rather supporters of restoring theelected president (whether we agree with that or not. Per-sonally I dont want him backNow that being said, I dontdoubt the majority of them are MB supporters. But I refuse togeneralize all of them, especially as I know people who are

not even islamists participating in them. And as for the west-ern journalists remarks, if thats your excuse, then the ployhas not worked. Vast majority of western news still refer tothese protests as pro-Morsi or MB, not anticoup. So lets notfocus too much on that

So we hear now that the interim Govt of Egypt is going toconscate all the MB assets, money, etc. yet the Mubarakclan gets to keep what they stole during 30 years time? Howis this then, better than it was?

I return to my blog after what seems a century atleast of absence. But everything before 30 June, forthose of us living in Egypt, seems to belong to thedistant past.

Such has been the intensity of what Egyptians havelived through. Never has political change been feltmore deeply, coming as it does already after twoand half turbulent years since the revolution of 25January 2011.

Egypt has ended a year-long experiment with Mus-lim Brotherhood rule. Some feel deeply aggrieved, but many more (it seems to me) feel that it wasright to start the search anew for Egypts future asa modern democratic state. I want to focus here onthe prospects for that future, since 15 Septemberis UN International Democracy Day. September 15,2013.

In the immediate aftermath of the huge populardemonstrations of 30 June, and the replacement on3 July of President Morsi by an interim President,Judge Adly Mansour, I found it hard to imagine howthe roadmap setting the course for a new constitu-tion and elections could be given effect.

At least in the very short and ambitious time line theroadmap gave for the process. We all had memoriesof the long and controversial negotiations over thenew constitution of 2012. And the arguments overthe law and conduct of elections. And we could seethat a fully inclusive process gave the best prospectof building a new democratic order on rm founda-tions.

But conditions are never ideal. You have to startfrom where you are, and with the realities of theday, while keeping faith with a commitment to atruly democratic outcome, and one in which indi-vidual freedoms are fully and effectively protected.

How likely is the new constitutional drafting com-mittee going to succeed in this, where its 2012 pre-decessor notoriously failed? The new Committee ofFifty, in my personal view, stands a much better

chance than any alternative process, in practicalterms, that I can imagine in the circumstances wecurrently have.

The membership is highly distinguished, and thereis no ideological agenda to divide it. The lessonsof recent times are fresh in the members minds. The separation of politics and religion, which is per-haps the most fundamental desire uniting the greatmajority of Egyptians, is an accepted principle forthe C50s work. They deserve success, and I feelincreasingly condent they will achieve it.

A constitution which guarantees freedom of expres-sion and belief, and respects the equal status ofwomen without reserve, along with all other funda-mental rights, would be a just reward to the Egyp-tian people, after almost three years of struggle.

    Anotherchance w

To read the whole blog post:http://blogs.fco.gov.uk/jameswatt////another-chance/Blog: James watthttp://blogs.fco.gov.uk/jameswatt/

James watt is the Ambassador of united king-dom to Egypt. He wrote this blog post in 15September about the last political develop-ments in Egypt.

Mostafa Hussein wrotethis blog post in 10 Sep-tember about his rejectto the both sides in theegyption politics. Mosta-fa is a doctor, and workedfor Nadim centre for re-habilitation of victims ofviolence and torture.

I am slowly developing an apathy towardsthe current political process. Not sure if fu-ture elections are meaningful.

There are no credible politicians left. Maybefew untainted ones exist but they hardly canbe popular enough to win seats in any elec-tions, either because they represent fringeideology or have been smeared by everyonein power.

Those who came with a democratic processbetrayed its values and those who claim tostand for such values betrayed the process. Both sides have blood on their hands. Bothsides compete on bending over to the army. There is no third path, those who belong toit are doomed to campaign uphill for humanrights and other good causes only to nd itworsening and they will continue to do thisforever.

The society has been in a state of irremedia-ble ideological polarisation that makes con-sensus impossible. The bloody crackdown onislamists has worsened a dangerous wound.People dont want to listen to reasonablevoices, they are eager to believe rumoursthat conrm their prejudices and hardenthem to brutal measures against their oppo-nents.

Another failed constitution is the only ex-pected result, with no sense of achievementor ownership. Just shared disappointment.

The Mubarak state is almost fully reanimat-ed but now with unsafe streets and a moredilapidated economy. Egypt is more depen-dent on foreign loans for almost everything. We are unable to feed ourselves or run ourgenerators. We are left with an unsustain-able state, a selsh interfering military anda society corroded by inequality.

The current political atmosphere appears asif everything between Mubaraks speech inFebruary 2011 promising to step down after

nishing his last term in ofce and todayhave been folded. Except two thousand peo-ple have lost their lives, many more injuredand many hopes buried.

Our attempt to stand up have showed usthat we have a broken back.
