WASHTECH: PILOTING THE TAFWASHTECH: PILOTING THE TAF
““EXPERIENCES WITH THE ROPE EXPERIENCES WITH THE ROPE PUMP IN GHANA”PUMP IN GHANA”
The rope pump was first piloted in Ghana by CWSA in the year 2000.
Some local artisan were trained to produce it locally.
About 100 communities in the Western, Greater Accra, Northern and Upper East regions benefits.
Challenges faced: durability of rope quality, aesthetics, and possible health risk; and also relative robustness of other pumps (GMIM 2, Afridev, etc.) and changing community preference
WaterAid through its NGO partners picked up the momentum in 2003, but it is still not standardised or accepted.
To assess the suitability and
usefulness of the TAF
To provide recommendations
for improvement on the rope
pump within the context.
The second is the focus of this presentation
Bolgatanga Municipality and Bongo District in the Upper East Region
The Technology was assessed both at household use level and community use level
Regional Stakeholder
consultation
Training of field staff
Collection of data
Preliminary analysis and
validation
National level scoring workshop
No clear leader of the promotion process
Producers have made some progress with improvements
It has potentials as household technology
Demand for the rope pump is limited.
Challenges were more with community pumps
Monitoring and follow up by the regulating bodies
Capacities and skills are available to support the introduction process
Can largely be produced locally.
No national programmes to support self supply though recognised.
Should be promoted mainly as household technology
A leader to drive the promotion process is key Evidence of its robustness on deeper wells
(than 10m) important National effort that promotes self supply
technologies will be a boast Product/technology improvement should be
considered a critical ongoing activity.
