Non School ProgramsI think sometimes it is important to discuss the differences between school teams and non-school teams such as AAU, travel teams, and club. While they are both important to the development of our athletes, there are some important differences.

Our school teams have a lot of pressures pulling at them. Maintaining grades, being in school all day, then going to practice 5-6 times a week, maintaining other expectations such as discipline and balancing other school activities makes it very difficult to be a part of the school team. But, it does have its' rewards. Playing in front of large crowds, especially your classmates in the cheer block, is a great feeling you will long remember. Long hours in the weight room and off season conditioning teach our students to appreciate delayed gratification, playing for something bigger than yourself, along with the other virtues that sports teaches us.AAU, club, and travel teams are also important. They give the athlete a chance to meet other athletes from other schools, travel and play in other areas of the country, and get a chance to play the sport they love. In some sports, it also allows college coaches a chance to evaluate athletes. While I continue to encourage all athletes to play multiple sports, it is important for our student athletes to play in the off season if they can. They just need to understand that high school athletics doesn't have age groups (like 12u, 14u, etc), choose the divisions of tournaments, etc like travel does. Our varsity teams compete against the best in the some of the highest classes in the state.Thank you to all our fall athletes for their hard work and best of luck to our winter athletes.
