CAK Aqua Warriors Finish 13th at

Tennessee High School State Meet

The State High School Championship capped another successful season for our swimmers. CAK had 15 out of the 28 team members qualify for the state championship meet. Coaches Brad Boswell and Megan Tomes guided the team to a great fi nish. The seniors who qualifi ed for the state meet were Kirk Allen, Philip Chesney, Stevie

Key, and Mike Zaczyk. In addition, Matt Absher, Lauren Beets, Jack

Gobbel, Andrew Holztrager, Lindsay Lee, Mary Mansfi eld, Jared

McPherson, Madison Pate, Callie Ragland, and Chris Shields -- along with our diver, Michael Bowie -- formed a great group of Warriors to represent CAK at the state level.

The boys team fi nished 13th at the state championship meet, which was held in February at the new Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the UT campus. Mike Zaczyk (a recent signee to the UT swim team) led the team in individual performances, fi nishing second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:27.51 and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.11. Junior Matt Absher fi nished 12th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:46.03. Freshman Andrew Holztrager

fi nished 11th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.34. Just to compete in the high school championship as a freshman is an astounding feat, let alone qualify to swim in the championship fi nals! There were several best time swims during the state championship, and the relay teams also contributed to the team’s success. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Jared McPherson, Stevie Key, Philip

Chesney, and Mike Zaczyk placed 12th with a time of 1:31.35. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Andrew Holztrager, Philip Chesney,

Matt Absher, and Mike Zaczyk fi nished 10th at the meet, coming in at 3:20.10. The women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Lauren

Beets, Lindsay Lee, Mary Mansfi eld, and Callie Ragland placed 29th with a time of 1:48.65. Great job, Aqua Warriors!

CAK Scholars Take 5th in the State; Junior Named to All-State Scholars’ Bowl Team

CAK’s Scholars’ Bowl team, now in its 16th year, qualifi ed for the state tournament for

the sixth straight year. The tournament, held at Tennessee Tech, pitted the qualifying

teams in the state against each other in a round-robin competition of twelve games on

March 27-28. The CAK team worked well together, with members contributing answers

in their areas of expertise, and fi nished in fi fth place for the state of Tennessee. The

starting four players included seniors Thomas Waldrupe (captain) and Chad Armstrong

and juniors Kim Counts and Blake Mayes (co-captain and CAK’s high scorer for the

tournament). Alternates, all of whom saw playing time and scored, included junior

Macy McNabb and sophomores Ryan Berube and Bradley Salocks. In addition to the

team standings, Kim Counts received an individual award as she was named to the

All-State Scholars’ Bowl team. Coaches

Sara Baker and Mark Reeves accompanied

the team, and a strong contingent of

family members and other teachers

came to cheer them on. With a strong

group of returning players and some

new freshmen already practicing, the

team hopes to be even more competitive

next year. They welcome interested

students to practice with them and see

how they like the competition.

Support Those Who Support

CAK: Camp Lake Frances

In April, Olympic gymnast John Macready was our special guest speaker at the Annual Booster Bash. His message was inspiring, encouraging everyone to be an Olympian in life. Well, Macready and fellow Olympic gymnast John Roethlisberger have started a camp in Crossville, Tenn. to help kids do just that -- leave camp as not only a better athlete, but also as a better person.

Camp Lake Frances is a three-day adventure camp for kids of all ages. Campers kick off the summer in style as they tube on the lake, swing from the giant swing in the ropes course, hike mountain trails, play in the unique gym, and make lasting camp memories. Camp Lake Francis runs from May 27-29. For infor-mation, visit www.lakefrancesretreats.com.

UT Professor (aka. “Al-Chemist”)

Makes Flames for 3rd-Grade Scientists

On April 29, chemistry was the “hot topic” among CAK

third grade students as they welcomed University

of Tennessee chemistry professor Dr. Al Hazari into

Ms. Jenkins’ classroom for a fun-fi lled science lesson.

Dr. Hazari, also known as “Al-Chemist” among these

elementary students, had several fascinating experi-

ments in store. From making a science book seemingly

go up in fl ames, to creating the colors of the American

fl ag in a liquid concoction, Dr. Hazari showed students

that science is fun, and useful, too!

Above: The professor entertains and teaches at the same time. Students say the magic word, “chemistry,” as Dr. Hazari mixes secret liquids. He later confesses that science some-times seems like magic!

Left: Dr. Hazari’s lesson gets “heated” when his chemistry book suddenly breaks into fl ame. Students learned that three elements, (fuel, air, and a source) are needed to start and keep a fi re going.

Kindergarten Students

Salute to America

Ms. Prine’s kindergarten class presented a patriotic play for parents last month. Students dressed as famous fi gures from the colonial days such as Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, and Thomas Edison.

Spelling Bee Winners in Our Midst

In February, 7th-grader Grant Bruer represented the CAK Middle School at the Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee for Knox County, hosted by the University of Tennessee. Grant went to the Knox County Bee after beating challengers from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Regarding his experience at the Bee, Grant said, “It was fun, and I got a free t-shirt!” Runner-Up in the Middle School Bee was CAK 6th-grader Samuel Swayne.

6th Grade Field Trip: Serve, Eat, & Enjoy!

The sixth grade fi eld trip is a three-part excursion on Thursday, May 7. Students will begin the day by serving others at Hill-crest Nursing Home. From there, buses will make a stop at West Town Mall for lunch. After lunch, students will enjoy an afternoon of bowling at Strike & Spare.
