An Up Side to Portfolio Giving in a Bear Market

How would you like to reduce your tax burden in future years, plus receive a tax deduction that you can use this year? It may be easier to achieve than you think!

Most people who own a stock or mutual fund portfolio have seen the value of their investments drop dramatically over the past several months. Many investors think they now have no ability to give to charities out of their investment portfolio.

However, in lieu of waiting to see how long it will take the markets to recover, you may want to consider selling a particular stock or mutual fund position that has a loss and give the proceeds to your favorite charity (might we suggest CAK?). You should receive a tax-deductible receipt from the charity, plus you may be able to count that loss toward your future earnings.

The ideas in this article may not be suitable for you. This article does not constitute legal, tax, or security advice. Any decisions about investment or tax strategies should be made with your professional advisors.

Senator Tim Burchett

Makes a Stop in 3rd Grade

Tennessee State Senator Tim Burchett headed back to his school days last week with a visit to Ms. Kimberly Fanning’s third grade class at Christian Academy of Knoxville. The visit went hand-in-hand with CAK’s third grade election studies and also gave the children an opportunity to meet a “real life” government fi gure in an intimate classroom setting.

While at CAK, Senator Burchett spoke to the students about the infl uence of his family on his life, the events that led up to his decision to enter into public service, and how God deliberately prepared him for his role in government. The Senator also emphasized the importance of being a good citizen now and continuing this participation in government as a responsible voter.

When one curious third grader inquired “Who is your boss?,” Senator Burchett responded with a smile, “The voters of this State.”

Local Softball Standout

Joins CAK Coaching Staff CAK proudly announces a new direction for War-rior softball with the addition of Holly Burns to the coaching staff . Coach Burns recently came to Knoxville from Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, where she led the softball program to a 2008 season ranked in the Top 10 in NCHSAA 4A softball. Burns was a high school softball standout at Heritage in Blount County and a collegiate golfer at Tusculum. Welcome to the team, Coach Burns!

Coach Treadway Proud of Middle

School Football Team in 7-1 Season

Coach Treadway would like to thank the parents, players, coaches, cheerleaders, and members of the Middle School staff for their support during the 2008 football season. This season on the fi eld was overwhelmingly successful as the team set many CAK middle school football benchmarks on both off ense and defense during their 7-1 campaign. More importantly, the team set high standards for work ethic, relationships, and dedication that Coach Treadway hopes will serve each player well for many years. At the banquet, season awards were voted on by the players. Congratulations to the following: Charlie High (Off ensive MVP), David Howell (Defensive MVP), Franklin Murchison (Outstanding Practice Player), Russell August (Most Improved Player), and William

Gass (Warrior Award, exemplifi es a Christ-like attitude on and off the fi eld). Special thanks to Jennifer Burton (banquet coordinator), Grant Duncan (team photo-grapher), Brian Bruce (website designer), and Frank

Q. ‘Tis the Season... for Open Houses & Admissions!

Choosing a school for your children is one of the

most important decisions a parent must make. For the parents of more than six million children, the choice is private education. Parents choose religious and independent schools for a variety of reasons: quality academics, a safe and orderly environment, moral and ethical values, caring teachers, supportive communities, and much more.

At Christian Academy of Knoxville, a dually-accredited Pre-K through 12th institution, we want to make your education decisions easy. Contact us now for information on Fall 2009-2010 enrollment. Call

Wanda Mullins at (865) 690-4721, ext. 190 or

email [email protected] to schedule a campus

tour or request an admissions packet.

Rising 6th-12th grade families are invited to an Open House on Tuesday, January 27. Middle school families will convene at 6:30 pm, with High School families following at 7:30 pm.

Do you have friends, relatives, or neighbors who would

be a great addition to the CAK family? Why not suggest they attend the upcoming Open House or schedule a campus tour with Wanda Mullins in the Admissions Offi ce?

Or simply cut out the above corner of your Warrior

News and give it to a friend. There’s no better “advertising” than through a personal invitation!

Three years ago this November, my life was suddenly changed/saved due to the infamous “tetherball incident.” From the beginning of this journey, our family has experienced fi rst-hand God’s faithfulness. It began with the kindness and generosity of my wonderful 4th grade class and their parents. As a teacher, it’s always been important for me to be there for “my kids,” but the way my kids were there for me during that diffi cult year showed me that if you invest in your students, you get far more back than you ever imagined!

As the days and years have passed, and we daily learn about Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy, the CAK family has continually reached out to us in so many ways. Most recently, when my MS was at its worst and our test results weren’t what we wanted to hear, the CAK family rallied to help once again. We even received a special blessing that will make our dreams come true this December!

I just wanted to take the time publicly to say thank you to the countless people who have been a blessing during the ups and downs of this new season in our lives. God’s goodness has truly been exemplifi ed through you! One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to learn was humility because I was no longer “in control” of my life and at times needed help with the basics.

So, with my new found humbleness, I thank all those who have been a living example of the body of Christ to the Snider family!

In Christ,Marcy “Dori” Snider

Note of Gratitude...

CHATTANOOGA - Something was missing from their trophy case this past year, and the Christian

Academy of Knoxville girls soccer team got it back November 8. Mary Thompson scored off an

assist from her sister Julie Thompson and led CAK to a 1-0 victory over Franklin Road Academy

(FRA) in the Class A/AA state soccer championship at Girls Preparatory School.

CAK (23-2-1) won the state title in 2006 but lost in the state quarterfi nals last year. “We felt we

had a good enough team to win it last year, and we didn’t get to win it,” CAK coach Nathan Pifer

said, “so this year our whole goal was to bring that thing (state title) home. It misses us, so we brought it back...”

FRA (20-4-2) was vying for its second consecutive state title and its fourth in fi ve years, but CAK took control early. Most of the

match was played on the Lady Panthers’ side of the fi eld. ”We knew it would be tough,” Pifer said, “and I’m proud of them because

they just went out and out-passed (FRA), we did a lot of things, just outplayed them.”

Lessons Learned from TragedyProtect Your Teen Driver from a Deadly Car Crash

Dear CAK Parents,

Some time has passed since the terrible accident in Scott County involving four Scott County cheerleaders and passengers of another car. As parents, I believe we can all learn a lesson from the heartbreak of this tragedy.

It should never be assumed that young people know everything they need to know about driving and automobile safety. Wet roads, not wearing seat belts, too many people in the car, night driving, and other distractions all played a part in the Scott County accident.

Several questions concerning that night remain unanswered. Did the parents know the laws concerning license restrictions for teen drivers? Did the parents emphasize the use of seat belts and did they mention it in the last conversation with their children? What was the condition of the tires on the teens’ car? In retrospect, these are issues that could have changed the outcome of events that night.

As the Driver’s Education teacher at CAK, I would like to off er the following suggestions to help keep your sons and daughters safe on the road:

Become familiar with the laws and requirements of the graduated

license in the state of Tennessee. Never assume your student knows and practices all the rules and requirements for safe driving.

Continue to monitor your teen’s driving for compliance with all

traffi c laws. Do not underestimate the value of continuing to drive with your teen and reinforcing the good habits learned in Driver’s Education class and other habits that you think are important. Emphasize the danger of distractions such as cell phone use, eating, and socializing while driving.

Be sure your teen knows the rules and laws you emphasize. Set up

conditions or consequences if these laws or rules are broken.

Be fi rm, even if it inconveniences you.

These tragedies occur somewhere in our country every day. Make sure your child knows that you will make the necessary sacrifi ces to prove the point that their safety is your number one priority.

Sincerely,

Richard CowanDriver’s Education Teacher

Booster NewsIn October, the Booster Club voted to disperse funds raised from the cookie dough sales and the 2008 Booster Bash. A record-breaking $55,336 was divided among 13 high school teams, six middle school teams, and the Warrior Band. The money will be designated for items requested on each coach’s wish list. These items are typically “above and beyond” requests that are not covered in the athletic budget. The Booster Club is excited to make these wishes come true year after year!

Did you know that every CAK family is a member of the Booster Club? Booster Club meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30 pm and all parents are welcome to attend.

The Boosters are currently busy planning the 2009 Booster Bash, under the leadership of Angela Estes. The event takes places on Saturday,

March 7 with a dinner at 6:00 pm and auction at 8 pm.

Do you have any goods or services you would like to donate to the cause? Vacation home rentals, services, restaurant certifi cates, electronics, or maybe an item you own that has never been used -- these all make great additions to the Silent Auction. Call Angela at (865) 680-6510.

If you would like to be a Table or Corporate Sponsor, call Carolyn

Cates at (865) 771-0878. Corporate tables are $2,500; Full tables (8) are $700; and Half tables (4) are $500.

For more information on the Booster Club, contact Kelly Harb at (865) 584-2255.

Got Talent? It’s Talent Show Time!

Dust off your guitar, tune up the vocal chords, and fi nd those tap shoes -- get ready for the 12th Annual CAK Talent Show on Saturday, January 31 in the Campus Center. Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate. Entry forms and information will be available in each school offi ce by the week of December 15. Hope to see you there!

CAK Cheerleaders in National Spotlight

CAK’s High School cheerleaders had three squad members

(Austyn Anderson, Leslie Borum, and Lauren Howard)

perform at the halftime show during the Vanderbilt home game on November 8. The girls traveled to Nashville to shine bright and represent CAK at a sold-out nationally- televised football game. They have been invited to return in February to perform at a televised basketball game, as well. Way to go, girls!

Cross Country Runners Awarded

Congratulations to the following students for receiving season awards at the Cross Country banquet: Steven

The theater students of CAK were star struck on November 24 as Academy Award winner Patricia Neal visited campus. Over 75 middle and high school theater students were treated to fi lm clips from Neal’s career and got the “inside scoop” on what it’s like to work with the actors and directors from each movie. “We were quite excited to learn that Ms. Neal was in the original fi lm ‘The Day the Earth Stood Still,’ which has been recently remade,” says CAK theater teacher Peggy Filyaw.

Ms. Neal was gracious and animated as she talked to the students about “making it” in Hollywood. She fi elded many curious questions and, as an added treat, Neal’s assistant, a trained

opera singer, sang a selection from “The Music Man.” CAK’s High School musical theater group will perform “The Music Man” this spring, and the group was pleased to know that Ms. Neal played Marion in the Broadway production.

Ms. Neal, who was once married to Roald Dahl, author of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was presented with a dozen yellow roses from CAK’s middle school musical theater group, who performed “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” in October.

Each student left with both an auto-graphed photograph of Patricia Neal and renewed aspirations to follow their dreams.
