Gala Day 1 24 March

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

OUR P&C

We are currently in the position of needing someone to volunteer to be our P&C President.

This is for one year, and as President, the successful person gets the opportunity to be

involved in decision-making in regard to relevant matters in the school. The P&C meets on

the fourth Wednesday night of the month, beginning at 6.30pm and finishing about 8.30pm.

Although one of the major jobs of the P&C is to do fund raising, it is not just up to the

President. In my time at this school, the P&C have rebuilt and regenerated each of the

playgrounds in the school, with only the year 1 playground to go. The P&C are also raising

funds for air-conditioning and with the record-breaking heat waves of this summer, the impact

of extreme weather events in the future will prove to be more difficult to deal with.

Without a President we do not have a P&C.

OUR SIGNATURE PROGRAMS

Often parents tell us that they come to our school because it is a very good school. One of our

signature programs is our study tour to Beijing – a unique opportunity. We developed this

partnership with a sister school in China 11 years ago. The reason we have this particular

school as a partner is because it is a boarding school, and this allows an extra level of security

for our students. It also means that our teachers are with the students for the majority of the

tour, and it is a gated community. The accommodation inside the school is of excellent quality

and resembles a top quality hotel.

I felt completely safe when my husband and I were in China and we were treated as honoured

guests by everybody we encountered. Beijing Primary school ensures that our students are

well cared for and the educational experiences are appropriate and enjoyable. In this

increasingly global world where travel is a part of everyday life, what a great way to introduce

our children to different cultures. This is a quality program which I wish my own children had

access to when they were in Primary school. We are holding an information session next week

so come along and learn more about this opportunity.

Year 6 have been showing their creative side in Wild Writing this week. Enjoy!

Brock scrambled up the snow-covered hill pulling his friends Sam and Morris behind him. They screamed as

they tumbled down the hill. Sam pushed Brock so he smashed into Morris. Suddenly their playful cries turned

to terrified gasps as they craned their heads and stared at the GIANT FOOTPRINTS. Which lead to a

The following quotes come from an article in music parents guide 23/1/2017. I will give some of the

information from this article over the next few weeks:

Over the last 20 years there have been more studies into the brain than over the last 200 years. These brain

studies have shown us many things, including how children learn in different ways, how learning changes

physical brain struture, and that TALENT as we know it is generally learned and developed – not inborn and

inherent.

There are 3 vital human characteristics that research of the brain has shown music provides all students in their

school day. Below I will summarize the first:

EMPATHY – We know that great leaders (that is great leaders, not any leader), have a high level of emotional

intelligence, which is built upon a strong sense of empathy. Attching emotion to words and music and picking

up nuances of speech and sound is a key element of empathy and emotional intelligence. Students in a music

ensemble collaborate in unique and profound ways, and connect with each other on an emotional level. Where

else does a child have a chance to develp this sense in school?

On 16th March (Thursday), let’s celebrate Harmony Day and Close the Gap Day.

‘Everyone belongs’ is the message. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It

is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. It is also a day

to acknowledge indigenous people as the first Australians who lived here for

40,000 years before the first white settler arrived. Harmony Day reminds us

that everyone deserves the same chance to enjoy the many opportunities available

in this great country.

On 16th March (Thursday), all staff and students are invited to:

Wear national costume or an orange shirt

Participate in the special assemblies (Senior assembly on 16th March

Thursday; Junior assembly on 17th March Friday) (Parents are welcome)

The P&C needs your support - and a President

The following people were elected to P&C positions for 2017.

President - position still vacant

Vice President – Sankalp Khanna (Sunny)

Secretary – Sandie Leong

Assistant Secretary – Rachel Teo

Treasurer – position still vacant

Assistant Treasurer – Ashley Robinson

Communications Officer – Rebecca Fels

We would like to thank the executive from last year that have continued on to serve the P&C. We would also like to welcome Sandie into the team as Secretary for 2017. We would also like to thank the parents who responded with an offer of support following our appeal last week. We have received some expression of interest for the Treasurer position, but we still need someone to step into the shoes of President and lead the P&C. Work has already started on 2017 activities. We are looking forward to a great year of fundraising and supporting the school, but the P&C cannot operate without a President and volunteers. So please carefully think about what is stopping you from becoming involved in the P&C. Join with some of your friends and get involved together, or join to meet new people. You will be welcomed and supported by other members regardless of how long you have had children at the school. COMPULSORY ASBESTOS TRAINING It is a compulsory Education Qld requirement that all P&C members, volunteers and staff attend Asbestos Awareness Training. This will be conducted at 6:00pm before our next P&C meeting on 22nd March and go for approximately 20 minutes.
