With more than 2.7 million sold last year, compact SUVs are the largest vehicle segment in the U.S., and customers say they want passenger and cargo space that fits their lifestyle without compromising on fuel efficiency. That was the task for the De- sign and Aerodynamic teams working on the shape of the new 2018 Equinox: to create an all- new compact SUV that is a per- fect balance of style, function and efficiency, said Jeff Perkins, Equinox design manager. “Working closely with the aero- dynamics team, we were able to craft a final design that is the ulti- mate win-win scenario,” said Perkins. “Together, we reached the aerodynamic goals intended to give the new Equinox an efficien- cy-enhancing edge on the high- way with the sculpted look and cargo space we set out to achieve.” The 2018 Equinox offers an EPA-estimated 32 mpg on the highway (FWD models). The teams took great care, said Perkins, in creating a refined new vehicle shape that maintains the key proportions of a small cross- over/SUV. In addition to delivering the utility and functionality cus- tomers look for in the segment, he said, the Equinox’s expressive exterior has a lean, sculpted form sporting Chevrolet’s signa- ture design cues. “Aerodynamic performance is a big contributor to fuel econo- my, but the box-like shapes of crossovers and SUVs are not con- ducive to aero efficiency,” said Nick Lico, Global Aerodynamics development lead. “Working with Design, we were able to craft an athletic shape that is both attractive and seg- ment-leading in aero efficiency.” The new Equinox’s overall length was reduced by 4.7 inches to further right-size the vehicle for customers, making it easier to park and maneuver. Despite the smaller exterior dimensions, in- terior volume increased by 3.5 cubic feet. The reduced length, however, posed another chal- lenge to aero efficiency, because it is tougher to push a shorter DETROIT (AP) President Donald Trump’s decision to re- examine Obama-era rules that govern automobile gas mileage could be the first round of a po- tentially bruising political fight: revoking the ability of California and other Democratic-leaning states to set their own, tougher car-emission standards. Environmental groups are preparing for the clash, which began even before Trump acted and is likely to be settled by the courts. California’s unique status dates to 1970, in the early days of the Clean Air Act. Because of the state’s smoggy skies, Congress gave California a “waiver,” allow- ing it to set stricter pollution standards than the rest of the na- tion. The California standard is now used by at least a dozen – mostly Northeastern – states, in- cluding New York and Massachu- setts. The Trump administration has said it wants one uniform fuel mileage requirement for auto- makers across the U.S. Environ- mental groups and California offi- cials fear that the administration will try to revoke the waiver, and they’re taking action to fight it in court. California Gov. Jerry Brown de- nounced the Trump administra- tion’s move, telling Environmen- tal Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt in a letter March 15 it was a “gift to polluters.” Brown warned automakers in another letter last week that his state would take the “necessary steps” to preserve its current emissions standards. Buttressing Brown’s threats, California filed a motion last week to intervene in a new law- suit brought by auto manufactur- ers against the EPA, a move im- mediately joined by New York State. honor to go to stores and pur-chase the goods. The dealershiphad raised enough money to filltwo pickup trucks with itemsfrom the Capuchin list.“When I say the trucks were

full, I mean they were full,”Swieczkowski said. “We filled thebeds and we filled the back of the

truck cabs that transported thegoods. And these cabs still hadto carry the driver and his assis-tant that helped carry the itemsout of the truck.”Credit for the size of the deal-

ership’s donation goes to its em-ployees and customers, as wellas the owner Edgar Rinke.“Mr. Rinke and the staff were

very generous,” Swieczkowskisaid. “And we have great cus-tomers who were also willing todonate their money.”

After dealership employeesloaded up the two trucks, theytook them to the Capuchin ware-house at the corner of Medburyand Mount Elliott in Detroit onMarch 3.“Getting involved and helping

out felt great,” Swieczkowskisaid.“Every year, we do something

like this as well as donate to‘Toys for Tots.’ We were glad tohelp out the Capuchins thisyear.”

pact SUVs,” Perkins said. “Butnow customers want compactSUVs that don’t have that truckylook. They want something thatis sleek and modern, while at thesame time has the cargo spacethey want.”The new 2018 Equinox, said

Perkins, is a fresh and moderncompact SUV, featuring an ex-pressive design, increased cargospace, the latest connectivity, ex-panded roster of available safetyfeatures and all-new range of tur-bocharged engines – includingthe segment’s first turbo-diesel.Cargo area has increased, he

said, with new storage featuressuch as a large, hidden under-floor storage space and a flat car-go floor that makes loading andunloading easier.Perkins said the biggest sur-

prise in designing the new Equi-nox was how effective it waschanging small details of design.“We found a number of small

trips that were effective in im-proving aerodynamics,” Perkinssaid.“Take the front fenders as an

example. Look at how they areshaped. They are smooth and flu-id.“It’s important, when design-

ing a vehicle, that the air on theside stay attached. The challengeis that aerodynamics dictate aflat surface to do that but wewant a shape that is sharp-look-ing and aerodynamic.“Design is where art and sci-

ence intersect.”Perkins said Computer Aided

Design (CAD) helps smooth outthe design process by making theprocess quicker. But once a de-sign has been completed in thecomputer, they still create full-sized clay sculptures.“You have to see a design in

real space,” Perkins said. “Some-times you have a design thatlooks great on the computerscreen, but when you see it real-ized in clay, it just looks off.“When that happens, we make

adjustments to the clay model,scan the adjusted version andsend those dimensions back tothe computer for study.”Purposeful technologies are

designed to help keep passen-gers safe, comfortable and con-nected.Teen Driver is also offered,

consumer research when comingup with new designs. One thinghe heard from people about thenew Equinox was that it looksnew and modern and sleek.“That’s what we were going

for,” Perkins said. “We want peo-ple to look at the new design andsee that it’s new and fresh.”Perkins said now that the 2018

Equinox is completed, he’s work-ing on the next iteration of thevehicle.The 2018 Equinox is on sale

now. It’s assembled in GM’s In-gersoll, Ont., CAMI facility.

bond sale would go toward re-pairing the Fraser sewer collapse,said commission spokesmanMichael O’Meara, as well as refi-nancing $90 million worth ofbonds floated in 2010.“By using some of the money

from this bond issue to refinancethe 2010 bond issue, the countycan save a couple of million dol-lars,” O’Meara said.The approval process began

would go to the 2010 bond issueand the remaining $150 raised isto be allocated to the MIDD intwo phases,” O’Meara said.“First, approximately $75 mil-

lion for the immediate fix of the15 Mile collapse.“And, second, an option for up

to approximately $75 million forlining repair of the remainingportion of the interceptor.“A $1.5 million grant is cur-

rently being used to fund aninspection of the rest of theinterceptor to determine addi-tional needs.”

DETROIT (AP) – PresidentDonald Trump plans to re-exam-ine federal fuel economy require-ments for new cars and trucks.The requirements were a cen-

terpiece of President BarackObama’s strategy to combatglobal warming. But Trump ap-pears to be making good on apledge to car company CEOs toreduce “unnecessary regula-tions.”Here’s what’s happening:What are CAFE and GHG stan-

dards?CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel

Economy) standards are miles-per-gallon targets for cars andtrucks set by the U.S. govern-ment. The standards are basedon size and are weighted bysales. Each manufacturer has adifferent requirement based onthe models it sells.Congress required the National

Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration to develop CAFE stan-dards in 1975 after gasolineshortages during the Arab oil em-bargo. The U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency began regulat-ing greenhouse gas emissions(GHG) from vehicles in 2007. Theagencies work together to pro-duce CAFE standards.The standard for passenger

cars stayed at 27.5 mpg from 1990until 2007. In 2009, the govern-ment set a fuel economy stan-dard of 34.1 mpg for cars andlight trucks by 2016. In 2012, it seta new target of 54.5 mpg by 2025.The number can change depend-ing on the mix of vehicles cus-tomers buy. Right now, it standsat 51.4 mpg because people arebuying more SUVs and trucks.

Under the current standard,would my car get 54.5 miles agallon in the year 2025?

No. Manufacturers can applycredits for various fuel-savingtechnologies to arrive at that fig-ure. Real-world mileage would becloser to 36 mpg.

What’s happening now?In the last days of the

Obama administration, theEPA completed a review of thestandards for model years 2022-25 and left them unchanged,saying the car companies havemany affordable options to helpthem comply. The industryprotested, saying the reviewwas too hasty and didn’t consid-er the fact that gas prices havefallen and few consumers wantthe smallest, most fuel-efficientvehicles.President Trump is reopening

the evaluation process, whichcould lead to weaker standards.

Why would the governmentconsider changing the stan-dards?President Trump wants auto-

makers to expand production inthe U.S. and hire more workers.In exchange, he has promised tocut regulations and taxes. Gaso-line is more than $1 per galloncheaper than it was in 2012,when the standards were issued.The low prices hurt demand formore fuel-efficient cars. If thosecars don’t sell, their high mileagecan’t be counted toward an auto-maker’s corporate average fueleconomy.But environmental groups say

weakening the standards wouldincrease pollution and requireconsumers to spend more ongas.

How are automakers improv-ing their fuel economy?Manufacturers have intro-

duced all-electric cars like theChevrolet Bolt and increased theuse of lightweight materials likealuminum. Engine technologies,such as direct fuel injection and

more efficient transmissions, arealso contributing.The standards give manufac-

turers extra credit for new tech-nologies, such as hybrid enginesfor pickup trucks and stop-startsystems, which automaticallyshut off the engine when the ve-hicle stops in traffic.

Do those added technologiesmake my vehicle more expen-sive?Yes. In its final ruling in Janu-

ary, the EPA estimated the fueleconomy standards will cost$875 per vehicle. A study com-missioned by the Alliance of Au-tomobile Manufacturers esti-mates the cost of compliance at$1,249 per vehicle.However, the EPA says the

standards would save con-sumers up to $1,620 in gas overthe life of their vehicle.

If the standards are weak-ened, will that affect what kindsof cars are available?Maybe. Automakers might

choose to offer fewer electric orhybrid cars in the U.S., sincethose are less profitable thantrucks and SUVs. They also couldscrap subcompact cars, whichare unpopular with U.S. con-sumers but help meet fuel econo-my targets.There are caveats. Automakers

will still have to meet rising fueleconomy standards in China andEurope, so they won’t stop mak-ing efficient vehicles.If gas prices rise, U.S. con-

sumers might demand more fuel-efficient cars.Finally, California and other

blue states have a history ofpassing stricter standards thanthe rest of the country. If thatcontinues, automakers wouldhave to keep their most fuel-effi-cient models in U.S. showrooms,since California is the biggestmarket in the U.S.

pleaded guilty to obstruction ofjustice and conspiracy over abrazen scheme to program near-ly 600,000 vehicles to deceivethe Environmental ProtectionAgency.VW also agreed to pay $4.3 bil-

lion in criminal and civil penal-ties. While that is the largest-everfine imposed by the U.S. govern-ment on an automaker, the com-pany could have been on thehook for much more.Federal sentencing guidelines

called for fines from $17 billion to$34 billion due to the size of theplot and because VW employeesdestroyed documents and dataafter learning of the governmentinvestigation.The crimes were well-planned

and “went to a very high level inthe corporate structure,” Assis-tant U.S. Attorney John Neal toldthe court. VW won’t know itspunishment for sure until sen-tenced April 21 by U.S. DistrictJudge Sean Cox in Detroit. Butprosecutors said that VW got abig discount on the penalty be-cause it cooperated after fessingup to the crime.The automaker’s general coun-

sel, Manfred Doess, who was incourt to agree to the plea, ac-knowledged the scheme lastedfor nine years, from 2006 to 2015,and went to the level of just be-low the company’s board.VW attorney Jason Weinstein

said VW’s cooperation enabledU.S. authorities to quickly filecharges against six German su-pervisors in the case. Only one isin U.S. custody, though, and it’sunlikely the others will be extra-

dited from Germany. One U.S.employee also was charged.“I’ve never seen a company act

more swiftly or aggressively tohold itself accountable for whatit did wrong,” said Weinstein, aformer federal prosecutor.VW agreed to compensate

owners for more than they wouldhave received under criminalstatutes, Neal said. Car ownerscombined will get up to $11 bil-lion for vehicle buybacks andcompensation as part of a civilsettlement agreed to last year.The company also agreed to en-vironmental remediation andelectric vehicle investment, andits behavior will be watched by amonitor for three years.Although both sides asked Cox

to sentence VW on March 10, Coxsaid he wanted more time tostudy the terms of the punish-ment – including a $2.8 billioncriminal fine. If Cox rejects therecommendation, VW can with-draw its plea. If the companysticks with a guilty plea, Cox stillcould order harsher penalties.An attorney for 300 VW owners

who have opted out of a largercourt settlement objected to the

penalty, contending that ownersshould get restitution throughthe criminal court. But the Jus-tice Department and VW arguedthat the $11 billion in restitutionVW agreed to give owners in thecivil lawsuit was sufficient. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – A self-driving car company founded byGoogle is presenting new evi-dence to support allegations thata former manager stole technolo-gy sold to Uber to help the ride-hailing service build its ownrobot-powered vehicles.Waymo, a project hatched by

Google eight years ago, wove itstale of deceit in sworn state-ments filed March 10 in a SanFrancisco federal court.The documents try to make a

case that former Waymo man-ager Anthony Levandowski con-ceived a scheme to heist keytrade secrets before leaving thecompany early last year tolaunch an autonomous vehiclestartup that he had been dis-cussing with Uber.It’s the latest salvo in a battle

that started last month whenWaymo sued Levandowski andUber for alleged theft of the tech-nology for “LiDAR,” an array ofsensors that enable self-drivingcars to see what’s around themso they can safely navigateroads. Experts say an effective Li-

DAR system typically takes yearsto develop.After leaving Waymo,

Levandowski started a self-dri-ving truck company called Ottothat Uber bought for $680 millionto accelerate an expansion intoautonomous vehicles.Uber brushed off Waymo’s

claims as “a baseless attempt toslow down a competitor.”Waymo is mounting its attack

with the help of one ofLevandowski’s former col-leagues, Pierre-Yves Droz, theleader of Waymo’s LiDAR project.In a sworn statement, Droz

said Levandowski confided inJanuary 2016 that he planned to“replicate” Waymo’s technologyat Otto. A Google forensics ex-pert said he determined thatLevandowski began downloadingthousands of files containingWaymo’s trade secrets in Decem-ber 2015, according to anothersworn statement.Levandowski had previously

acknowledged to Droz that he be-gan discussing self-driving carswith Uber in 2015, according tothe documents. Levandowski,“told me that it would be nice tocreate a new self-driving car

startup and that Uber would beinterested in buying the team re-sponsible for the LiDAR we weredeveloping at Google,” Droz saidin his declaration.Then, again in January 2016,

Levandowski said that he hadbeen at Uber’s San Franciscoheadquarters seeking an invest-ment in his startup, Droz said.Waymo also filed papers seeking

a court order to block Uber fromusing any of the technology that itbelieves Levandowski stole.If a judge grants that request, it

could force Uber to halt its cur-rent tests of self-driving cars inPittsburgh and Phoenix. It’s un-clear how much of the technolo-gy targeted in Waymo’s lawsuit isbeing used in the Uber self-dri-ving cars that are currently pick-ing up passengers in those cities.Levandowski wasn’t alone in

close by year’s end, will allow thecompanies to bring componentsto market faster at a lower cost,solidifying Mobileye’s leadershipposition, officials from the com-panies said.Automakers and some technol-

ogy companies are testing auton-omous vehicles in California,Michigan and a few other states.Nearly all use Mobileye’s soft-ware, which reads inputs fromcameras, radar, and laser sen-sors and makes decisions onwhat an autonomous car shoulddo.Jerusalem-based Mobileye

says it has contracts with 27 dif-ferent automakers. It also makessoftware that runs automaticemergency braking and semi-autonomous cruise control sys-tems that are in cars and truckson the road today.Autonomous cars will need

higher levels of connectivity tothe Internet and access to biggerdata centers, which Intel can pro-vide, Krzanich said. The twocompanies also will combinehighly detailed mapping efforts.Automakers, Krzanich said, wantlower costs, faster times to mar-ket and the ability to get anautonomous driving system inone place.“If you put all of that together,

Ford Motor Company is ex-ploring how large-scale one-piece auto parts, like spoilers,could be printed for prototypingand future production vehi-cles, as the first automaker to pi-lot the Stratasys Infinite Build 3Dprinter.Capable of printing automotive

parts of practically any shape orlength, the Stratasys InfiniteBuild system could be a break-through for vehicle manufactur-ing – providing a more efficient,affordable way to create tooling,prototype parts and componentsfor low-volume vehicles such asFord Performance products, aswell as personalized car parts,said Ford spokeswoman LlorynLove.The new 3D printer system is

housed at Ford Research and In-novation Center in Dearborn.“With Infinite Build technology,

we can print large tools, fixturesand components, making usmore nimble in design itera-tions,” said Ellen Lee, Ford tech-nical leader, additive manufac-turing research. “We’re excitedto have early access to Stratasys’new technology to help steer de-velopment of large-scale printingfor automotive applications andrequirements.”Wider adoption of 3D printing

has been driven by recent tech-nology advances, new areas ofapplication and government sup-port, according to Global Indus-try Analysts, Lee said.By 2020, the global market for

this emerging technology is ex-pected to reach $9.6 billion, theorganization reports. As 3D print-ing becomes increasingly effi-cient and affordable, companiesare employing it for manufac-turing applications in everythingfrom aerospace to education tomedicine.3D printing could bring im-

mense benefits for automotiveproduction, including the abilityto produce lighter-weight partsthat could lead to greater fuel ef-ficiency, Lee said. A 3D-printedspoiler, for instance, may weighless than half its cast metal coun-terpart.The technology is more cost

efficient for production of low-volume parts for prototypes andspecialized race car compo-

nents, Lee said. Additionally,Ford could use 3D printing tomake larger tooling and fixtures,along with personalized compo-nents.With 3D printing, specifica-

tions for a part are transferredfrom the computer-aided designprogram to the printer’s comput-er, which analyzes the design.The device then goes to work,printing one layer of material at atime, then gradually stacking lay-ers into a finished 3D object.When the system detects the

raw material or supply materialcanister is empty, a robotic armautomatically replaces it with afull canister, Lee said. This allowsthe printer to operate unattend-ed for hours – days, even.Using traditional methods to

develop, say, a new intake mani-fold, an engineer would create acomputer model of the part, thenhave to wait months for proto-type tooling to be produced.With 3D printing technology,Ford can print the intake mani-fold in a couple of days, at a sig-nificant cost reduction.3D printing is not yet fast

enough for high-volume manu-facturing, but it is more cost-effi-cient for low-volume production,Lee said. Additionally, minus theconstraints of mass-productionprocesses, 3D-printed parts canbe designed to function more ef-ficiently.
