The 2017 Ted Williams All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, Robinson Canó, chose a Chevro- let Corvette Grand Sport during the MVP award ceremony pre- sented by Chevrolet at Marlins Park in Miami on July 11, said GM spokeswoman Afaf Farah. Chevrolet gave Canó, who went 1-for-2 in the contest with a home run, RBI and a run scored, his choice between the 460- horsepower Corvette Grand Sport or the trail-ready Colorado ZR2. This is Canó’s first All-Star MVP award and the third Seattle Mariners player, joining Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. (1992) and Ichiro Suzuki (2007). His solo home run at the top of the 10th inning proved to be the game- winner, Farah said. “Robinson Canó turned in a tremendous performance tonight and is an excellent example to all baseball fans, and especially our kids, that hustle, determination and teamwork are what wins, and that is why Chevrolet is proud to present the MVP award,” said Brian Sweeney, U.S. vice president of Chevrolet. Chevrolet has been the Official Vehicle of Major League Baseball since 2005 and through its Chevrolet Youth Baseball pro- gram has donated more than 135,000 equipment kits, renovat- ed more than 9,400 parks and im- pacted more than 6.7 million boys and girls across the United States. “At Chevrolet, we appreciate the positive effect that playing sports has on our kids and that is why it is so important for our brand and our dealers to support baseball at every level,” said Sweeney. The Corvette Grand Sport that Canó chose features heritage-in- spired design cues combined with a track-focused chassis and suspension elements that build on a legacy established in 1963, when five Grand Sport race cars were built under the direction of the Corvette’s first chief engi- neer, Zora Arkus-Duntov, Farah said. The Grand Sport Corvette of- fers both speed and power with an estimated 0 to 60 mph per- formance of 3.6 seconds and quarter-mile capability of 11.8 seconds at 118 mph, with the available Z07 performance pack- age and available paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmis- sion. And that means in the next few years there will a whole lot of new players in the industry, said analysts from AlixPartners Glob- al, a company that analyses in- dustries around the world for pri- vate clients. The Alix speakers addressed the Automotive Press Associa- tion at the Deteroit Athletic Club on July 11 during a special pres- entation. They were John Hof- fecker, global vice-chairman of Alix; and Mark Wakefield, global co-head of Alix’s Automotive Practice. Hoffecker began the talk by saying that Alix’s current auto- motive research paper is 1,200 pages long. They put one out every two years. And right now the industry is seeing a bridge to the future based on the CASE principle driving future develop- ment. CASE, Hoffecker said, stands for Connectivity, Autonomous, Shared Mobility and Electric. The development of these technologies and business mod- els has introduced a lot of new players into the auto industry, Hoffecker said. Companies like Apple, Google and Samsung. They do not come from the tradi- tional automotive business chain and have access to huge amounts of capital. “They’ve basically eliminated the balance sheet,” Hoffecker said. “These new competitors get funding from the rest of their businesses. It’s a whole different world out there.” Alix believes that under this new automotive ecosystem, com- panies that rely on traditional auto-industry approaches are falling behind, Hoffecker said. They should really consider re- vamping their business models. Moves where a traditional OEM like Fiat Chrysler works with a new Silicon-Valley compa- ny like Waymo to develop new technology is the future, Hoffeck- er said. Automakers will have to act more like electronics compa- nies if they want to survive. Alix currently sees 195 partner- ships among suppliers, OEMs and new players to the auto in- dustry. This year’s Woodward Dream Cruise takes place Aug. 19 and is expected to attract more than 1.2 million people and 40,000 cars. “Dream Cruise is all about the sheer joy and freedom of the au- tomobile, and Ford has always celebrated car culture,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice presi- dent, U.S. Marketing Sales and Service. “From Fiesta to GT, we’re obsessed with making driv- ing fun and we’re committed to celebrating that passion with en- thusiasts of all ages in the birth- place of motoring.” In addition to backing the Dream Cruise, Ford is also bring- ing back Mustang Alley for its 19th year, Schembar said. This year’s Mustang Alley will be the largest ever, featuring even more examples of the icon- ic muscle car, including the new 2018 Mustang, which hits dealer showrooms later this year. The Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center in Detroit on July 11 was home to one of the five Fiat Chrysler “Meet Up & Eat Up” events that the company has planned for the summer. Throughout June, July and Au- gust, Fiat Chrysler has planned five “Meet Up & Eat Up” gather- ings, said Fiat Chrysler spokes- woman Christina Biache. These events are meant to educate the public and promote the idea that when school is out, kids can still come and have access to healthy foods. The auto industry is in themidst of undergoing the greatestamount of change since the1920s.And that means in the next few

years there will a whole lot ofnew players in the industry, saidanalysts from AlixPartners Glob-al, a company that analyses in-dustries around the world for pri-vate clients.The Alix speakers addressed

As part of its promotion ef-forts, FCA is holding five “MeetUp & Eat Up” promotions, saidBiache, one of which was held atthe Williams Rec Center in De-troit on July 11. The event waswell attended by organizationsseeking to help and the public.

Fiat Chrysler brought its trav-eling training vehicle to theWilliams Rec Center. It’s normallyused for going to different FiatChrysler plants in the Midwestand contains computers and oth-er equipment that is used to

train Fiat Chrysler employees inthe latest techniques used in FiatChrsyler’s World Class Manufac-turing (WCM) processes.

On July 11, the vehicle wasconverted into something wherechildren could see and play withcomputers and tablets. Volun-teers also set up a table wherekids could be kids and play withthe more traditional glue, con-struction paper and glitter.

Wendy Santure, a training anddevelopment lead at FiatChrysler’s WCM Training Centerin Warren, volunteered her timeand showed the children theequipment.

“At this event we brought a‘smart board’ where kids couldcolor in a Jeep,” Santure said.

The smart board is basicallyan interactive large computertouchscreen, Santure said. Thereis a black and white drawing of aJeep in the center of the screen.Above the Jeep, there are severaldifferent colored boxes. The chil-dren then touch a colored box,and then touch a part of theJeep.

The section they touched isfilled in with the same color ofthe colored box the childtouched.

Once all the sections of theJeep are filled in with colors, FiatChrysler volunteers print a hardcopy of the Jeep and give it tothe child.

Santure said it’s a sort of 21stcentury way for kids to colorwithout having to use crayons.

“I’ve been to two of theseevents already,” Santure said.“The coloring Jeep program is al-ways fun for the kids. The techwe bring to these events isn’tsomething small children mayhave had a chance to see yet. It’sa real joy to expose these chil-dren to this technology. Hopeful-ly, it will inspire them in the fu-ture. And, hey, who doesn’t liketo color?”

Greg Marquardt, a FiatChrysler WCM trainer, said thekids get a real kick out of the techand it’s fun to teach them how touse it. The next “Meet Up & EatUp” event was at Jimmy Paul’sBoxing Gym in Detroit, Santuresaid, a couple of days after theWilliams Rec Center event.

“I know what people think,”Santure said. “A boxing gym? ButJimmy Paul’s is more of a neigh-borhood place. Kids go there andthey have something to do. It’s agreat place.”

DETROIT (AP) – A former high-level executive for Volkswagen’sAudi luxury brand has beencharged with conspiracy and ac-cused of directing other employ-ees to program vehicles to cheaton emissions tests.

The Justice Department saysGiovanni Pamio, an Italian citi-zen, was charged June 6 in acriminal complaint with conspir-acy, wire fraud and violating theClean Air Act. It was unclearwhether he was in custody.

The complaint says Pamio washead of Thermodynamics in Au-di’s Diesel Development Depart-ment in Germany, leading a teamof engineers who designed emis-sions controls. It says he direct-ed employees to design softwarethat would cheat on U.S. EPAtests. VW already has pleadedguilty to criminal charges andagreed to pay a $2.8 billion fine.

On July 10 German prosecu-tors said they opened an investi-gation into employees ofPorsche, which is a unit of Volk-swagen AG, and an Americansubsidiary over the possible ma-nipulation of diesel emissions.

Stuttgart prosecutors saidthey are investigating suspicionsof fraud and making false claims.They said that the investigationis against persons unknown whowere employed by Porsche and aU.S. unit which it did not identify.

DETROIT (AP) – Takata isadding 2.7 million vehicles fromFord, Nissan and Mazda to thelong list of those being recalledto replace potentially dangerousair bag inflators.

The inflators are a new typethat previously was thought tobe safe. Vehicles affected arefrom the 2005 through 2012 mod-el years.

Takata inflators can explodewith too much force and spewshrapnel into drivers and pas-sengers. At least 17 people havedied and more than 180 injureddue to the problem. The inflatorshave caused the largest automo-tive recall in U.S. history with 42million vehicles and up to 69 mil-lion inflators being called backfor repairs.

Takata uses the chemical am-monium nitrate to inflate airbags. But it can deteriorate whenexposed to high airborne humidi-ty and high temperatures. Previ-ously the company believed thata drying agent stopped thechemical from degrading and theinflators were safe.

But the National Highway Traf-fic Safety Administration says ina statement Tuesday that testsdone by July 11 show that for thefirst time, a type of desiccated in-flator “will pose a safety risk ifnot replaced.’’ The agency says ithas no reports of any inflatorswith the desiccant rupturing.

fects just over 515,000 Versa sub-compact hatchback and sedansfrom the 2007 through 2012 mod-el years. Mazda said its recallcovers about 6,000 B-Seriestrucks from 2007 through 2009.Ford, which has the most vehi-cles involved in the latest recall,is reviewing the information andwill file a list of models within thefive days required by law.

Takata said in documents filedwith the safety agency that ittested inflators returned fromNissan and Ford vehicles whichuse calcium sulfate as a dryingagent. Although none of the infla-tors blew apart, some showed apattern of deterioration in theammonium nitrate propellantover time “that is understood topredict a future risk of inflatorrupture.’’

NHTSA said in a statement thatnot all Takata inflators with adesiccant are being recalled.Takata used different dryingagents in other inflators, theagency said.

The latest recall raises doubtsabout the safety of other TakataCorp. inflators that use ammoni-um nitrate and drying agents.The company has agreed to re-call all original equipment infla-tors without a drying agent inphases by the end of 2018. NHT-SA gave Takata until the end of2019 to prove that inflators withthe drying agents are safe, orthey must be recalled as well.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Electricautomaker Tesla has producedits first Model 3 sedan, a highlyanticipated car because it carriesa relatively low sticker price.

CEO Elon Musk late July 8tweeted pictures of the car,which will cost $35,000 and cantravel 215 miles on a single elec-tric charge.

A $7,500 federal tax credit forelectric vehicles would lower thecost of the vehicle to as little as$27,500 for customers who havedecided to purchase the new ve-hicle.

The new model comes after abad week for Tesla’s stock price.

Shares fell roughly 14 percentafter Musk tweeted that deliver-ies of the company’s other twomodels – the Model S sedan andModel X SUV – were at the low-end of the company’s projectionsthat were made in the first half ofthis year.

Musk also said the companywould make 20,000 Model 3s inDecember, below previous esti-mates.

Musk earlier had said Teslawould make 10,000 Model 3s perweek by December.

Musk also has said the Palo Al-to, California-based company willhold a party to hand over thefirst 30 Model 3s to customers on

July 28. Tesla expects to produce100 cars in August and more than1,500 in September, Musk tweet-ed earlier.

While second-quarter deliver-ies rose 53 percent from a yearago, they still were about 12 per-cent below first-quarter deliver-ies.

Tesla said in a statement thatsecond-quarter production washampered by a severe shortfallof battery packs.

DETROIT (AP) – Electric carmaker Tesla is expanding itsservice operations and hiringmore than 1,000 technicians tomeet expected demand for itsnew Model 3 sedan.

The Model 3, cheaper thanTesla’s existing cars, goes on salethis month and is expected to at-tract hundreds of thousands ofnew customers to the brand.

To accommodate them, thecompany is adding 100 new serv-ice centers worldwide over thenext year, bringing its total num-ber of service centers to 250. Thenew service centers will be in ar-eas that have the most reserva-tion-holders for the Model 3.

Tesla also is adding 350 vansto its mobile service fleet, mostlyin the U.S. The vans go to own-ers’ homes or offices and repairtheir cars while they wait, typi-cally for about one hour. Thevans are equipped with tools andreplacement parts as well as anespresso machine, snacks andkids’ toys.

Until now, Tesla had around 30

mobile repair vans, which wereused mostly in cases where theowner lived too far from a serv-ice center. About six months ago,the company began deployingthe vans in the San Franciscoarea in order to ease the burdenon its service centers and see ifthey could help meet anticipateddemand for the Model 3. Cus-tomers were happy with the newarrangement, so the companydecided to roll out mobile serv-ice in more locations.

At a starting price of $35,000,the Model 3 is about half the costof Tesla’s two other models. Tes-la hasn’t said how many peoplehold refundable, $1,000 reserva-tions for the car, but it has said itexpects to make 500,000 vehiclesin 2018. That’s up from 84,000last year.

Like its stores, which areowned by the company and notby franchised dealers, Tesla hasupended the auto industry withits service model. Tesla CEO ElonMusk said several years ago thatunlike traditional dealerships,Tesla didn’t intend to make aprofit on service and repairs. U.S.dealers made $110 billion in serv-ice and parts sales last year, ac-cording to the National Automo-bile Dealers Association.

Tesla said it’s charging thesame amount for non-warrantyrepairs done at service centersor through mobile vans. It hasn’treleased details on the warrantyplan for the Model 3, so it’s notyet clear if it will match Tesla’sother vehicles. The Model S andModel X have a four-year, 50,000-mile vehicle warranty and aneight-year battery warranty withunlimited miles.

Unlike traditional dealers, Tes-la also doesn’t want customersto have to go to a service centerfor repairs that can be done re-motely.

The company says 80 percent

of repairs to its cars, includingreplacing the tires or fixing elec-tronic glitches, can be done with-out a lift, which means it’s just aseasy to perform them out of amobile repair van. That leavesservice centers free to concen-trate on more complicated re-pairs that require a lift, like mo-tor or battery problems.

Tesla is hiring 1,400 new serv-ice technicians this year to staffthe service centers and mobilerepair vans.

DETROIT (AP) – U.S. authori-ties have accused a former exec-utive of Volkswagen’s Audi luxu-ry brand of giving orders to pro-gram diesel engines to cheat onemissions tests.

Giovanni Pamio, 60, an Italiancitizen, is accused of being aleader in a conspiracy that waspart of an embarrassing scandalthat has cost VW more than $20billion in criminal penalties andlawsuit settlements. He’s theeighth ex-VW employee chargedin the case that is being investi-gated by the FBI and the Environ-mental Protection Agency’scriminal unit.

One of the employees isscheduled for sentencing laterthis month, another is in cus-tody in the U.S. and five othersare German citizens.

Volkswagen has admitted thatVW, Porsche and Audi vehicleswith 2-liter and 3-liter diesel en-gines were programmed to turnpollution controls on during gov-ernment treadmill tests and turnthem off while on the road. Thescheme went on for years beforebeing discovered in tests con-ducted by West Virginia Univer-sity.

The Selfridge Air NationalGuard Base in Mt. Clemons is cel-ebrating its 100th anniversarythis year.

The base, which got its startjust months after the UnitedStates’ entry into World War I, isnow seeking to become a hometo the military’s F-35 jet.

According to the Selfridge Mil-itary Air Museum, part of the wareffort back in 1917 saw the estab-lishment of an airfield in theswampy lowlands between theeastern city limits of MountClemens and Lake St. Clair.

Museum records show thatmilitary aircraft piloted by mem-bers of the 8th and 9th AeroSquadrons were first seen aloftover the city on July 9.

After training thousands of aer-ial gunners and hundreds of air-craft mechanics during WorldWar I, Selfridge Field was nearlyclosed during the post-Armisticedraw down, according to muse-um records. However, its impor-tance and potential value wasevaluated and outright purchaseof the installation in 1921 wasrecommended.

The following year opened anew and exciting chapter whenthe First Pursuit Group, a highlydecorated organization whichnumbered among its membersseveral World War I aerial aces,made Selfridge Field its newheadquarters.

Museum records show that theFirst Pursuit Group would spendthe next two decades “dazzling”the public with aerial feats.

They performed operationaltesting for dozens of new aircraft,competed boldly in air races, andset record after aviation record.

General Curtis LeMay recalledin his memoirs his excitementwhen, as a young lieutenant withnewly minted wings, he receivedorders for Selfridge Field and anopportunity to rub elbows withthe “First Team.”

General H. H. “Hap” Arnoldcommented that it was the ambi-tion of every air corps pilot toserve at Selfridge, according tomuseum records.

The bombing of Pearl Harboron Dec. 7, 1941 and thus the be-ginning of World War II for theUnited States, precipitated thedeparture of the First PursuitGroup, thus changing the mis-sion of Selfridge Field. The instal-lation soon became home tonewly formed units and raw re-cruits received basic trainingthere.

The 332nd Fighter Group, alsoknown as the Tuskegee Airmen,attended advanced combat train-ing at Selfridge Field, accordingto museum records.

Following the war, in 1948, six-teen F-80 jet fighters from the56th Fighter Group demonstrat-ed to the Soviet Union and theworld their ability to deployquickly across the Atlantic whenthey completed the first west-to-east transatlantic jet crossing injust over nine hours, Museumrecords show. When war eruptedin Korea, members of this organi-zation were among America’sfirst jet aces.

In 1955, the Air Defense Com-

mand took the initiative to returnunits to their historic bases,prompting the return of parts ofthe First Pursuit Group, now des-ignated the First Fighter Wing, toSelfridge Field.

The First Fighter Wing re-mained at Selfridge for another15 years, though the base was al-ready entering another phase ofits history, which would culmi-nate in the transfer in 1971 fromthe U.S. Air Force to the MichiganAir National Guard.

Under the Michigan Air Nation-al Guard, Selfridge served as thehost organization, serving as amodel of a successful joint-ser-vices installation with units fromall five branches of the armedforces represented within itsgates.

Selfridge Field was named inmemory of Thomas Etholen Self-ridge (1883-1908) in San Francis-co, a graduate from the UnitedStates Military Academy at WestPoint with the class of 1903. Lt.Selfridge was 31st in his class of96, ranking well below the vale-dictorian, Douglas MacArthur(1880-1964).

After receiving his commis-sion, Selfridge was assigned tothe field artillery and then wasattached to the U.S. Army SignalCorps, where he had an opportu-nity to explore the potentials ofmilitary aviation and joined Dr.Alexander Graham Bell in his ex-periments with kites with greatlifting capacity.

He also became involved in de-signing and building early air-craft. On September 17, 1908while conducting trials of theWright airplane he went aloftwith Orville Wright. On that day,flying about 150 feet from theground over Fort Meyer, Virginia,Wright put the plane into a steepturn.

The wing flexed and the pro-peller blade snapped off and theplane, out of control, crashed. Lt.Selfridge died that afternoon, thefirst man killed in a heavier-than-air flying machine. Orville Wrightwas hospitalized for severalweeks.

Local historian Dan Heatonhas written about Selfridge’s his-tory. He said the first base com-mander was Bryan Q. Jones wasalso a West Point graduate. Hewas a cadet there when Self-ridge was an instructor, Heatonsaid.

Jones also showed an interestin the new technology and wasstationed at an Army base inTexas during the time of Mexi-can revolutionary Pancho Villa’sreign.

Jones actually flew the Army’sfirst combat mission in 1915. Hiscommander told him to see if hecould spot Villa’s forces from theair. During his mission, he cameunder fire, Heaton said.

When the U.S. entered WWI,Jones set up the Selfridge AirBase in Mount Clemens. Thefirst flight out of there was in Julyof 1917.

He was there for about fourmonths and eventually went toFrance to help polish the fly-ing skills of American pilots be-fore they entered combat.

Between the world wars, Joneshad filed a number of patents

and was considered an expert inthat procedure by the Army.

So, when it came time topatent the Jeep, Jones wastasked with filling out the pa-perwork, Heaton said. Despitehaving nothing to do with thecreation of the Jeep, Jones waslisted as its inventor by the U.S.Patent Office because he handledthe paperwork.

Heaton said he believes Joneswas eased out of the Army be-cause he wrote a paper advocat-ing that the Air Force remain un-der Army command instead ofbecoming a separate service asmany in the Army Air Forcewanted.

Jones believed that the AirForce worked best supportingtroops on the ground,Heaton said. He retired in1944 from “heart” problems, dy-ing in 1959, Heaton said.

More recently Brig. Gen. JohnD. Slocum, commander of the127th Wing based at Selfridge hasbeen meeting, along with Ma-comb County officials, with mem-bers of the public talking aboutthe F-35 and what it would meanfor the county and the state tohave the plane based at Self-ridge.

The Detroit Free Press reportedthat last week some of the nearly40 Air Force brass touring thebase this week were taken on anaerial tour of the facility.

Macomb County ExecutiveMark Hackel said that in hismind, there's no contest.

Looking at the criteria forstrategic deployment and froman economic perspective, as towhether such a mission could besupported, Hackel said “there isno question. All things beingequal, they're not. MacombCounty, Michigan, is the site thatshould be selected as the No. 1site,” he said during a news con-ference held last week at thebase.

The Free Press reported thatSlocum intentionally wanted thebase, situated along Lake St.Clair, to be the last of the five fi-nalists studied so those touringthe facility would have a good,lasting impression after their ex-amination.

“We here at Selfridge ... have avery unique infrastructure ca-pacity to be able to host the F-35,” Slocum said.

“This entire base is infrastruc-ture that we have. It’s robust andit's resilient. And it’s a fantasticbase to easily and economicallybase the F-35.”

Other sites under considera-tion are Dannelly Field Air GuardStation in Montgomery, Ala.;Gowen Field Air Guard Station inBoise, Idaho; Jacksonville AirGuard Station in Jacksonville,Fla., and Truax Air Guard Stationin Madison, Wis.

Selfridge Celebrates First 100 Years While Planning Future

Selfridge today is a modern air base and Macomb officials hope to make home to the F-35 fighter jet.

Introduction of new technolo-gy clean diesel truck engines andemissions control systems intothe nation's trucking fleet overthe last five years is now at a 30percent level and has yielded sig-nificant emission reductions andsubstantial fuel savings, accord-ing to new research commis-sioned by the Diesel TechnologyForum.

“Almost 3 million heavy-dutydiesel commercial vehicles intro-duced in the U.S. from 2011through 2016 now on the roadpowered by the latest generationclean diesel engines, and thesetrucks have delivered importantbenefits in the form of cleanerair, fewer carbon dioxide emis-sions and dramatic fuel savings.Over a 5 year period, the newestgeneration commercial vehicleshave saved 4.2 billion gallons ofdiesel fuel, and reduced 43 mil-lion tonnes of carbon dioxide(CO2), 21 million tonnes of ox-ides of nitrogen (NOx) and 1.2million tonnes of particulate mat-ter,” said Allen Schaeffer, Execu-tive Director of the Diesel Tech-nology Forum.

“Because diesel overwhelm-ingly dominates the heavy-dutytruck sector and is also the num-ber one power source for medi-um-duty vehicles, the transitionto newer generations of cleandiesel technology (2011 and laterMY) is significant. The 30 per-cent national average is up fromjust 25.7 percent last year. Theresearch also estimated that sig-nificant further benefits wouldaccrue to communities acrossthe country if more of these new-er generation clean diesel trucksenter into service.”

California, which ranks 46thnationally with only about 25percent of commercial trucksthere equipped with the latestgeneration clean diesel technolo-

gy could see substantial benefitsfor accelerated adoption of new-er clean diesel technologytrucks, Schaeffer said. If Califor-nia were to achieve the samenew technology penetration asIndiana (51 percent), it can elimi-nate another 200,000 tons of NOxand 11,000 tons of fine particlesthat would bring cleaner airfaster to all California communi-ties than any other strategies.

The benefits research was con-ducted by IHS Markit, a globaltechnical marketing researchfirm, Schaeffer said.

“The U.S. trucking fleet is tran-sitioning to newer clean dieseltechnology which means imme-diate fuel savings, lower green-house gas emissions and cleanerair,” Schaeffer said. “This newestgeneration of clean diesel truckshave NOx emissions that are 99percent lower than previous gen-erations along with 98 percentfewer emissions of particulatematter, resulting in significantclean air benefits throughout theU.S. Beginning in 2011, all heavy-duty diesel trucks sold had tomeet NOx emissions of no morethan 0.20 grams per brake horse-power hour. This is in additionto particulate emissions levels ofno more than 0.01 grams perbrake horse-power hour (g/HP-hr.) established in 2007.”

To achieve these new levels ofemissions and performance,Schaeffer said the new cleandiesel system relies on an effi-cient engine and optimized com-bustion system utilizing the mostadvanced fuel-injection, tur-bocharging and engine manage-ment strategies coupled with ad-vanced emissions controls andafter-treatment technologies in-cluding particulate filters and se-lective catalytic reduction (SCR)systems, all running on ultra-lowsulfur diesel fuel.

Clean Diesel TechnologyMakes Great Strides

will go down. Price has alreadydeclined by 80 percent since2010.One trend that Alix has no-

ticed, Wakefield said, is how pri-vate equity money has left theautomotive marketplace. Thatmeans the only players in the in-dustry will be the ones that haveto be there.He said the business is cyclical

and Alix estimates that sales fig-ures in the U.S. peaked in 2016with sales of 17.5 million. Alix ex-pects sales to be about 16.9 thisyear and will drop to 15.2 in 2019.By 2022, sales should be about16.8 million.Part of what is affecting sales

is the “used-car time” bomb, Hof-fecker said. Simply put, becausecar sales began to rise in 2010,those vehicles and lease vehicleswill be hitting the market at atime when demand is not grow-ing.

“OEMs are focusing on how tomitigate this drop in demand,”Hoffecker said. “They’ve learnedtheir lesson. After 9/11, OEMsdropped prices and increased in-centives.”That was costly. OEMs thought

they could ride the situation outand kept production up, Hoffeck-er said. When the bottom fell outof the market, many OEMs wereunable to find their balance.That’s no longer the case, Hof-fecker said. OEMs have workedvery hard to make sure they canweather cyclical auto sales.Overall, Hoffecker said, a lot of

companies will be spending a lotof money on developing CASEtech.But most of that money will be

wasted because there can’t be 50different CASE systems. Eventu-ally, two or three systems willend up the winner. The problemis that no one knows which oneswill win, so OEMs are spending alot of cash on a little bit of every-thing.“Those that are flexible and

able to adapt to changes will dowell,” Wakefield said.

BEIJING (AP) – China’s autosales rebounded in June on thestrength of SUV demand but rosejust 2.3 percent from a year earli-er following a sales tax hike andweak economic growth.Drivers in the world’s biggest

auto market by number of vehi-cles sold bought 1.8 millionsedans, SUVs and minivans, anindustry group said on July 10.Sales in May shrank a total of

2.6 percent, according to reportsto the media.Total vehicle sales, including

DETROIT (AP) – U.S. safety reg-ulators and automakers are try-ing to track down gas tankflanges that can crack and causefuel leaks on what could be mil-lions of cars and trucks.The National Highway Traffic

Safety Administration began in-vestigating parts made by Germansupplier Continental AutomotiveGmbH after the company filed re-call documents this week sayingthe parts could be defective.The documents, posted June 7

by the agency, say Continentalsold the potentially faulty flangesto 11 automakers and five otherparts supply companies. Volk-swagen, Porsche and Audi al-ready have recalled nearly a half-million vehicles because of leakyflanges, which cover openings inthe fuel tank for the fuel pumpand other items. The flanges,made of an industry-standardpolymer, can crack and let fuelleak. That could cause fires.With other automakers possi-

bly involved, Continental’s recallcould spread to millions of othervehicles, although the total num-ber was unclear. Continentalspokeswoman Mary Arraf con-ceded the number could run intothe millions, but said it will bedifficult to determine how manywere sold because part numbersare not the same. The companyhas no reports of fires caused bythe problem, she said.In addition to VW, Porsche and

Audi, automakers who receivedthe flanges from Continental in-clude Ford, General Motors, FiatChrysler, Lamborghini, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz,McLaren and Volvo, documentssay. A Volvo spokesman said itsflanges are not involved in the re-call and it was mistakenly includ-ed in Continental’s list.

The government said in docu-ments that it will get informationfrom the automakers “in order todetermine whether any addition-al vehicles may have the samedefect as identified by VW andPorsche, and whether additionalsafety recalls are required bythose identified companies.’’Continental said in documents

that it hasn’t determined exactlywhat causes the flanges to crack,but it believes the outer wall candegrade due to environmentalfactors that it can’t control, suchas acids from cleaning solutionsor other sources. Each automak-er uses the flanges differently,and some may not be as exposedto the environment, the docu-ments said.Arraf said automakers would

be responsible for determining ifthe parts are defective in theirvehicles and would have to con-duct their own recalls. “Our filing

is signaling that basically there’sa potential defect and here’s whowe sold it to,’’ she said. If otherautomakers aren’t having any is-sues, there may be no additionalrecalls, she said.Ford said it’s unclear if any of

its vehicles are affected. McLarenwouldn’t comment and a GMspokesman had no information.Mercedes said it’s working withNHTSA. Messages were left Fri-day for the other automakers.Volkswagen and its Porsche

and Audi brands did four recallsfor the problem starting inSeptember of 2016 and runningthrough March of 2017. Paper-work filed for each recall doesnot mention any vehicle fires,but documents say driversreported smelling fuel. Dealerswere to apply a protectivering to the flanges. If they werecracked, they would be re-placed.

Continental Faces New Federal Scrutiny

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Amassive plant in northern Indi-ana that’s been abandoned fordecades is getting some improve-ments. There are plans to refaceportions of the 94-year-old for-mer Studebaker plant in SouthBend, the South Bend Tribune re-ported.The new facade will be made

of brick and glass that will mimicthe building’s historic look. Workwill also include structural im-provements, said owner KevinSmith. He said he hopes work onthe facade will start this summerand be about halfway completeby the end of the year.Smith said he envisions one

day projecting light on the newglass surface to mimic the Auro-ra Borealis. The project has sup-port from the South Bend Cubs.The Cubs’ owner, Andrew Berlin,

recently broke ground on amixed-use apartment complexnear the old factory.“It’s extremely exciting to see

this, because it just shows moreinvestment on our side of town,’’said team President Joe Hart.“Seeing what they’ve done on thesouth side of the (complex), it’sabsolutely beautiful. So to imag-ine what it’s going to look like onour side, we just can’t wait.’’The $7 million project has re-

ceived $3.5 million from the stateand $3.5 million from the city.It’s part of a larger effort to cre-

ate a mixed-use technology cen-ter. That entire project is expect-ed to cost more than $150 millionand could take more than 10years to complete.The structure has been largely

abandoned and unused sinceStudebaker shut it down in 1963.
